- Gold Coast to Tenterfield - it just kept getting better.
It was time to make our way home after visiting family, staying with Mum & Dad on the Gold Coast, so we headed out early through Canungra, Beaudesert and Rathdowney where people were out in their numbers commemorating Anzac Services.
Plenty of great twisty roads steered us to Maroon where we soon had the pleasure of beginning our gravel riding for the day on Burnett Crk Rd. Switching from sealed to gravel, the day kept getting better, with a nice stint on Paddy’s Flat Rd edging us towards the feature of the day - Drake to Tenterfield - no, not NSW best road, the Bruxner Hwy, but rather Long Gully, Rocky Creek & Billirimba Roads.
This mostly gravel route didn’t disappoint - it’s a beautiful ride - better than the similar Bridal Track and Araluen Road. This road snakes along a number of creeks and rivers including Long Creek, Timbarra River and Demon Creek amongst others. The surface is excellent, sometimes a little slippery, but always undulating with steep climbs, lovely scenery and hundreds of bends. And the recent rains ensured the Causeway crossings were all running with no less than 30 crossings adding to the experience.
This was so enjoyable - it’s a must-do ride.

Good video. It’s a great ride, lots of good stuff in that area.
The thing that bothered me most is not keeping left on some of those blind corners. The rider in front was on the right side of the track on many right bends.
Please don’t assume you are the only people on the road.

I lived in Bonalbo quite a few years ago. A beautiful region and rode a ST 1100 up around there also. A little hairy on some of those dirt roads on highway tyres!

Being a resident on this road I'm at a loss how fast the majority of peg-riders travel past our Homes.
There are quite a few working Farms and Properties, hundreds of loose Live-stock on the road, and DOZENS of residences with People, Families and Children residing here.
There is also an increasing amount of (rare)Wild Life and Live Stock becoming Road-kill, and surprised peg-riders going bush when finding themselves head-on with a resident Cattle Truck.
WHY would you fly along at such speed through a Rain Forest(?) or such pretty Country(?) or Primary Industry land?
WHY would you be oblivious to all of the above?
This is not a NIMBY attack, but if you're going to come all this way, at least knock it back a gear, slow down, and smell the Eucalyptus.
It's well worth it.

You’ve highlighted the reason why we ride these areas - to take in the amazing country-sides that others don’t get to see. We’d like to think we respect people’s property and certainly animals along the way. In fact we stopped on a number of occasions on this ride giving cows time and space to move as they desired.
Sounds very much like nimbyism to me. If you watched the video you would have seen some responsible riding, as for killing wildlife 4 wheels are much more likely to hit and kill an animal than 2. Finally building a house back from a road is an obvious nuisance reducer.

At no point did I suggest a lack of respect and poor riding manners being displayed.

The second commenter is just a illiterate trouble maker with very poor comprehension skills.
Again, I made NO MENTION of irresponsible riding!

The video is edited in a way which could give the impression that this is a deserted empty void,
not a vibrant, busy and growing community of people.
We call the Ambulance for injured and dead Riders.
We comfort their friends and families.
We clear the paddocks for the Care Flight helicopter.
We coordinate with Police and Tow trucks.
We put down and bury the road kill.
We loan tools for repairs.
We give advice and directions.
We give a nod and a wave to passers by. (You guys!)
The bottom line is I made NO COMPLAINTS.
We all agree it's a beautiful part of World, that's why we live here and you ride all this way.
So I'll repeat what I said in my original post.

Mates and I did this exact same ride in reverse in 2023. Rocky River road is awesome and going back there sometime.

We were thankful for that. Thought it was a nice amount of water in the creeks & rivers and the roads seem to be well looked after. So beautiful.

Thanks for the video. That certainly was some beautiful country, especially along Long Gully Road and Rocky River Road. Unfortunately, I think the hills were too steep for me to consider bikepacking on my human-powered bicycle.

I live in the northern GC (Coomera Waters) - If coming up the new england, the nav will say to go up to Brisbane - prefer to turn at around Aratula, through boonah, and across to beaudesert and tamborine. One of our favourite day trips is DOwn through rathdowney and wodenbong, to Legume, amosfield, have lunch at stanthorpe, and then back home via warwick. Tell people that you drive 700kms for lunch and they look at you all strange. (We lived in the USA in NH for a while - one of our fave drives was up near the Canada Border, across into Vermont, down into Mass, across into NY, back into Mass, and through Connecticut and Rhode Island, around Boston, up into Maine, and then home - why? Because we could - Met people who had never been more than 15 miles from their birthplace.
Great read. Left Hope Island, via that route (Beaudesert etc). Always up for a breakfast or lunch 500km-700km away as long as the mode of transport for us is motorcycle. 🏍️

Thanks! Besides how much we love the rides, we just like to share information and routes which might help others enjoy them as well. We are riding on Mitas E07+ tyres, just on the 3rd rear with the front ticking over 20000km!

Vision and control...and your legs will never miss 'leg day' again...my brother and I did the old Grafton road a month or so ago..we stood for most of it ..gave us a good look at the upcoming potholes...there was quite a lot in the lead in and out of the tunnel..and a shit ton of 4WD's...made it even more fun...thanks to these guys putting this up, this run is on the to do list..

Hi is this track suitable fo4 a stock stand 4wd partner n I just want to go for a drive if it is do you mind giving sort of directions turn by turn if you can please
Under the right conditions, it's probably fine. After some recent rain it wasn't suitable for a group of motorbikes that deemed it too slippery and dangerous, so you need to be wary of the conditions. Dry, it'd be fine as long as you're very careful on the narrow blind corners of which there are plenty.
That White Swamp Road is horrible in the wet
I could imagine. Probably as bad as Billirimba Rd (when wet). A group of 20+ riders doing an Aussie Bike or Hire ride had to turn around a little while back because it was wet and they deemed it too slippery and dangerous.
We are experience caravans couple it looks ok for this ?
Without providing advise, we did see a bunch of caravans camping beside the river and passed a Van being towed as we neared Tenterfield. Not sure which way they all would have come in, there's tight twisty narrow road from both ends, dirt from the west and sealed from the east. Both are shown in the video.
Hmm, I was going to ask this as well. So...not a given that a caravan could do it?
A bunch of 25 bikes (Aussie Bike or Hike) all turned around (recently) because it was too slippery. So weather conditions are the most concerning.
