- Mid-Winter Ride - Gloucester Loop
Today seemed like a long ride. We headed straight to Bent on Food at Wingham who do a great coffee then headed up to Ellenborough Falls (longest single-drop waterfall in NSW) which was a nice (and easy) ride.
It was then on to Comboyne along the again, easy-riding gravel road, followed by a little shortcut on Bagnoo Rd to the Oxley Hwy.
The Oxley was a bit disappointing - there was even more roadworks than we experienced in April with a stretch of the mountain actually dug up. Gingers coffee and carrot cake is good and we were the only ones there!
We then headed back to Gloucester, but rather than the usual bitumen, we nicked back to Knodingbul Rd which passes through the Bulga Forest and the Tapin Tops National Park - we thought it might be a smooth ride like Dingo Tops Rd was a few weeks ago. Indeed it wasn’t, most of its 73km is a hard-rocky base covered in loose gravel of various sizes.
The Blue Knob Lookout was a very worthwhile stop - it offers a nice tower to climb for a better look at its 360° panoramic view.
A final stop at the Dingo Tops Picnic area provided a short rest before the gravelly decline down to Mount George, more gravel through to Bundook and the twisty ride back to Gloucester.

Love your choice of music 😊. Big fan .
My favourite 😀.
My next run through that area will be in the reverse direction. You mentioned it several times and it seems incredible how much of that run along Knodingbul seems to be in descent...it just goes on forever. I like that shortcut you took to the Oxley as well. Another great video and Blue Knob definitely looks like it's worth the minor deviation too. Thanks for sharing, hope to ride with you soon.
Thanks Chris - hope we're joining you too.
Sweet ride......great video
Thanks 👍
Beautiful ride as aways
Thanks - great area to ride in.
Thank you for another enjoyable video, loving the way you are editing your videos
Thank you very much!
Hi RideDay, another very nice video. Thanks. 👌
Oh, how I would love days like you described 3 to 22 degrees. Not so here in Tassie. 🤣 Bring on summer.
Stay safe. Cheers Darrel
Thanks! I imagine if Tassie had our weather, the population would skyrocket and your brilliant roads would suffer 😀😀. We're hoping you get a dry summer when we visit 🤞.
You met some friends of ours there earlier this year on your Styx ride, David & Renee. 👍
So good to be having such a great winter this year (finally). Both of you have shown us so many different routes with interesting places that I would never have known about and most within a day or two of Sydney. The camera definitely doesn’t show what the eye can see. I’m heading up through Gloucester to Walcha and back via Oxley to Wingham etc in the first week of September so this has been useful. Don’t have your riding skills so it’ll be limited where I can go but I’ll give it a go. I was going to ask why you’re always standing so know I know.
@@rideday01 Haha, we here in Tas already think it has skyrocketed. I hope so too for a nice summer.
@@rideday01 I did recognise Dave liking your photos on your FB photos.😀 Nice couple.
Small world eh. Renee works with the wife of a colleague of mine.
Hello, just came across your channel and love the exploring and commentary!
Having just retired last year preparing our new 4x4 to do some exploring and scenic road trips like this and love how your doing on the GS bikes… have been a BMW rider and lover of for 45 years.
Love you to share how you come across these rides/drives ??
Cheers
Stay safe and upright!
Absolutely beautiful around Barrington Tops. As far as finding roads, we spend quite a bit of time looking at Google maps and Apple Maps piecing together routes/roads.
Did you stop and have a look at the remains of the timber tram bridge on the knodingbul Rd? I’m not sure if there is much left now as I haven’t seen it in many years. I’m pretty sure my grandfather had a hand in its construction when cutting timber out of Mount George. There were a couple of tram tracks bringing timber into Mount George from out that way.
No, we were not aware of that, but usually like those sort of facts.
Its a shame to see the Oxley in poor condition. I was planning on riding it at the end of August.
I did Oxley last month and while it's not perfect it's still a great ride.
August might be better than October - I think Gingers will be closing early Oct because of roadworks and closures. they’re not opening weekdays atm. Still, not all of it is bad and much of the mountain’s 45km is ok.
