1964 Baja Bug Major Upgrade. New Ace Racing Engine and Front End Fix
This week we go deep into a 64 Baja Bug. The motor is tired, the CV's are blown, and the front beam bushings are way past done. Luckily we have an Ace Racing 2332cc engine to replace the 1641cc. The CV's made a mess of everything around them so they get sorted. After a terrifying test drive we find the beam bushings are in need of replacing. This is a DIY follow along more than a tutorial, but I'm sure you'll learn a thing or two.

We still had tons of Brazil to massage out of this Bus. It take a ton of time to work out the bugs on a car sometimes , and this one doesn't disappoint. #supercharged #diyautorepair #diy #vwbus #volkswagen #boost #mechanic #oldcars

Replacing Push Lock Oil Lines on a 1961 VW Bus
Переглядів 7863 місяці тому
This week we are doing some preventative maintenance on a 1961 VW Bus. I was swapping the Fuel line when I noticed the oil lines looked just as cracked as the fuel line. This bus is full flowed with a filter and an additional external oil cooler. I decided to change the oil lines before we had a catastrophic failure to the engine. That may seem over dramatic, but a blown oil line will kill an e...
The Beetle Barn Bus Get's Poppy's Patina

This week we are working on some local VW history. The Beetle Barn Bus. This bus was built by Warren Stephens (Founder of the Beetle Barn) in 1968 with a 1956 Palm Green Sand Green 11 window Ragtop, and a 1959 Mango Walk Through. Warren recently passed away, so it helped Bill make the final decision about what to do with this bus. It was logo'd and striped by another local Vegas legend Bob Spin...

I Made a Mistake! VW Bus Sump re-do
George T! Killer video! Super thorough, learned a lot. 38 minutes of the video, Goldie looking good out in the parking lot.🤙
🙌🏽 thanks Larry.
The Oberg oil filter, would have looked great on that Baja.
I’ve never used one before. Maybe in the future I will.
Rossi on both vws here 😂😂😂😂❤
Theses buses are money pits. Geman bus is a way better choice and long term value...... ❤great clip
Agreed. I tried telling Dunkle that. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way.
Great video! Great work. As an offroad buggy person. I would install a bolt on cover over the sump plate. One rock hit and it could be gone.
It’s about a 1/4” thick aluminum sump plate. This will be more of a trail buggy.
And that my friend is exactly why you have always been worth every penny!
🙌🏽
“Not on my watch!” That’s what I love about your shop.
👊🏽
Very nice work... Good to see someone so meticulous about their work... Thx for sharing...
🙌🏽
Looks like a cb performance kit and special washer
It is. Found that out in the comments. 👊🏽
Nicely done. Love the little details. Need to re-index the steering wheel though😵💫
I address that in the video. It has been done. 👍🏽
You do exceptional work👍
awesome Video
Great video George
Thanks
Thanks for coming!!!
I hope to go again in 2025
What's the part number of the rear calipers and or a source for them? Thank you!
I don't mean to come off as sarcastic this is is a genuine question, where's the line between "use oil to lubricate the connection" and "if you give oil a path it will take that path"?
If it’s a gasket I’d install it dry. ( or with recommended sealant) If it’s a press in seal with a lip that rides an edge I’d lube it.
@@the_Wagen right on! thanks!
Thanks for the detailed explanation while you're taking this one apart- I learned a lot
Great info ands tutorial as usual... Thanks!
Love the WW firewall panels we put them on everything we do!. Great Detail George 😎 Tommie
👊🏽
Great coverage! Thank you for adding music and leaving out any commentary.
If we found that in the UK in that condition we would think we had a mint project 🤣
🤣
😎 I see a lot of expensive toys.
For sure!💰💰💰
Is sema open to the public?
No. It’s for people in the automotive industry. It’s open to the public on Friday with one day passes.
Couldn’t make out the name of the tool used to straighten out the tabs. What is it called and a place to purchase them?
Knipex flat jaw pliers. Look them up.
@ thanks!
Great vid and tips on the tabs to help prevent breakage!
As usual great tutorial
How do you turn the steering rods of a lowered T1 bus through the bottom of the wheel side instead of through the top side so that they no longer touch the chassis when compressing? It is a mystery to me how this can be solved in the best and safest way. I hope you could solve this mystery for me
I use a tapered ream to “flip” the tie rod. You then need to use the later larger tie rod. You can also drill it out with a 5/8” bit and use the drop in sleeve that adds the proper taper. I’ll see about doing a spindle video with Michael at DubFab.
How about one with your favorite upgrades to bugs and buses
Good idea. 👊🏽
Can you do a video, on how to degree a cam? Either stock, or aftermarket cam. Sorry, If I have mention this already.
I don’t build engines but I have a good friend who does. I’ll have to collaborate on a motor video.
Nice job and information. I always end up with a few band aids, when I do that job.😕
I learned that lesson once 😖🤣
Couldn’t agree more. Great detail, says like it is and if you ask George a question he responds. It’s probably one of my favourite UA-cam channels 👍🏼
👊🏽
Back at ya bud👊🏼
Love the vids george keep them coming
🙌🏽
Can a ground cable mess you around? Does the thickness of the cable be a spesific thicknesss
I upgrade my Alternator power cable to a 4ga wire. I have a 4 ga ground on my engine to chassis. Along with a Wolfsburg West factory ground strap on my battery.
Do they make a kit for a single port 1600
Not sure. I bet it could be done easily.
Great video. I have a Jeffries Kyote buggy and the back deck is not cut for the scoop. I am concerned about the clearance when the throttle is wide-open because I have limited distance from the fan shroud to the rear deck of the body. Do you know what that distance might be? If not the GB linkage, I am going to look at the Vintage Speed linkage. Thanks
I’d estimate about 3” away from the shroud. The vintage speed is a nice linkage.
That skid plate looks beefy. Is it 1/4”, or 3/16”?
3/16” I believe.
Nice job, very clean set up? I’m pretty new to air cools, just got a 64. Is this set up good for a stock 1600?
It will work on a stock engine. I’d verify that it doesn’t push past the needle seat and overflow the carb before fire up.
@ I understand making sure it doesn’t overflow the carb, but not sure what you mean that it doesn’t push past the needle seat. Are talking about the fuel gauge needle?
Make sure when the pump is on it’s not overflowing the float bowl and pouring gas into the engine.
The needle seat is what turns the fuel flow on and off of the carb.
@@the_Wagen oh oh, got it now. Thanks
🎉
Great vid! Very informative for this old buck learning new stuff!
I’m still learning too. 👍🏽
Use gasoline to clean the grease build up.
i love your content and i want to say thank you. i ended up running a limiting strap on the shock mounts for cornering and jacking. this is help out a lot so the boots don’t over flex and leak. also helped that abrupt roll in a corner.
Thank you 👊🏽
Great stuff George, another add I do is add a little black sikaflex under the clamp surfaces as Ive had them leak from the ends too. Some of these clamps are rubbish and don't put enough even clamping pressure around the tube.
@@DemopVWgarage yes; I add sealant there as well. Great tips.
That’s a good idea!
I like the Febi Bilstein brand that say Volkswagen. I know that in Brazil they are making an improved version with better composites and thicker section. Thank you for the great tips. I also do the seam at 1 on the left side and 11 on the right side. I’ve also done them with the car on its weight on ramps. That gives me access underneath while keeping the axles fairly straight.
Febi Bilstein, used to be way better, now you will be lucky to get 5 years out of a set before the rubber goes bad!! Just changed a set over yesterday and the rubber was hard and cracked. Vewib are the go to ones these days way better quality rubber.
Thanks for watching.
Don't get skimpy
Nice, never really thought about the bolt under the spring plate.
Russell is full of useful tips. I’ll have to get him in a video in the future.
What’s the part number for the black fuel filter ?
racing power company R9212BK
@@the_Wagen thanks that’s in Canada, worked out great !
Dude this is an amazing video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Driving fast does not mean reliable.. a 36 40 and 1500hp are reliable motors, boosting air-cooled motors always spell trouble, very costly and seem to be a bit dangerous if your not a mechanic.
I’ve got a 2332cc in my bus that roadtrips regularly. It’s as reliable as any stock engine I’ve owned. It’s more dependent on the way it’s all put together. We did not do this for reliability, we did this to have fun in this car. 👍🏽
That ghia and buggy are sick!!!
👍👍
As someone still into the scene that frequently saw the original in Southend/Leigh this was an awesome tribute to see in person at #onecrazyweekend
