US General Series 3 56" Tool Chest Review - One Year Later
I picked up a proper tool chest from Harbor Freight as a birthday present to myself last year to help force me to get better organized. It was one of the new US General Series 3 56" rolling chests. It took me awhile to sort through the clutter and collect my collect my tools from all corners of the garage but it helped me be more organized and made me stop wasting time hunting for tools by actually having a place to store most of them. After over a year of ownership (~15 months), I have developed some mostly positive opinions on this tool chest with a few minor gripes but nothing significant. This is an unscripted impromptu review of how it has worked for me that also turned into something of a tool box tour to show how I've been using it.

Vintage Sears Manual Lockout Hub Restoration
Переглядів 2,5 тис.Місяць тому
These cool old circa 1970s Sears 10 spline hubs came with a basket case Dana 25 front axle that I'm working on rebuilding. These and many like them were aftermarket for Willys Jeeps. From what I understand, these should be basically the same on the inside as many of the others from the era that have a knob on the hub, such as Selectro, Mile Marker, Perfect Circle, Free Lock, 4 Wheel Drive, perh...
"Abandoned" Dana 25 Axle - Part 2 - Cleanup
Переглядів 471Місяць тому
Part 1 if you missed it: ua-cam.com/video/_7Uv1unP0lQ/v-deo.html The teardown and cleanup of the basket case abandoned Dana 25 front axle continues. I haven't had a lot of free time in the past month but I've been cleaning and degreasing things here and there, ordering parts, finding more that needs work, then ordering more parts. As expected, the ring and pinion are pretty well shot. The spide...
1948 CJ2A "Top Speed" Run (It's Not Fast)
Переглядів 401Місяць тому
I thought it would be nice to get the Jeep out of the garage for Veterans Day and drive around a little. The engine is finally dialed in to "runs like a sewing machine" status. I found myself on a main road so I tried to get the Jeep up to its top speed. It's a Willys Jeep so 0-60 is not really possible without a tail wind, a downhill road, an overdrive, or a transmission swap. 0-45ish? Takes a...
Dana 25 Scrap Differential Cover into Wall Art
Переглядів 5242 місяці тому
While working on my second basket case axle project, I found that the differential cover for the Dana 25 front axle was pretty well rotted away and not salvageable. It had lunar surface levels of rust pitting and craters, even worse than the Dana 41 differential cover that I had previously deemed scrap and put up on the wall in my "snarky" corner of stuff. Since I lack a welder in the garage an...
"Abandoned" Dana 25 Axle - Can/Should it be saved? Part 1 - Teardown

If you missed the video a year and a half ago where I got the project axles, here's the "origin story" of this one: ua-cam.com/video/VbSgK6V8Big/v-deo.html After a year of sitting in the back of the garage, (and some strangely unhappy noises coming from my current front axle), I decided that it was time to take a look at the basket case axle and see what was left and what it might take to recon...
Ep. 88: Driveshaft Misadventures and Swap Meet
Переглядів 7042 місяці тому
The rear driveshaft of the 1948 CJ2A Jeep was recently found to have been bent for who knows how long. With a freshly rebuilt rear axle just installed and a transfer case with only 150 miles on it, I wanted to make sure that there was no undue stress being added to the drivetrain. Unfortunately, a simple driveshaft swap turned out easier said than done. Big surprise, parts availability and corr...
Ep. 87: Dana 41 Rear Axle Post-Mortem

The weather was great so I decided to get out in the garage and tear down the old Dana 41 axle that was just pulled out from under the Jeep a couple of videos ago. It was a tired, worn out axle with worn out, pitted, brinelled bearings and races, plenty of rust flakes floa...
Ep. 86: First Drive After Rear Axle Swap and Suspension Overhaul

It's finally time to break in the new ring and pinion. I decided to repeat the drive to a local park because the distance and speed required matched up pretty well with what I needed to do the first break in and real drive of the new suspension and rear axle. (But I did not repeat the 30 minutes of video this time.) The short version is that it's... different. Better in some ways, but unchanged...
Ep. 85: Suspension Overhaul and Rear Axle Swap

At long last, the time has come to swap out the tired Dana 41 rear axle with the one I spent a couple of months working on earlier this year. Since I had to loosen suspension anyways, it was a good time to install the suspension overhaul that has been sitting in my living room for a year and a ha...

Nice, have you tried hanging parts to paint? I find a strong magnet or piece of string helps to retain clips that want to be free of my work area. Still can't find a big socket think it rolled out of the garage and somebody picked it up off the sidewalk.

I'm still lukewarm on the music choices but the YT audio library was limited 🙄 I hadn't seen another video on rebuilding these hubs so I thought I'd throw one out there, so maybe someone will find it useful someday. Not much to them, but it's nice to have a visual.

@@SunkCostGarage Im always looking for different ways to film something, and I thought this really good. When it comes to the music...that is always a tough choice determining what gives the video the "feel" you are looking for. And then...even when you are happy...some viewer will comment how much they hate music in videos. Make em because you like em. I need to rebuild the hubs on the CJ5 sometime in the near(ish) future so will look to yours for inspiration.

I love wasting time making things like new (sorta) when I can. I do wish I had a local machine shop that did small scale projects. Those bronze bushings needed to be remade but they'll likely function well enough as-is. Not a perfect restoration, but they'll do well enough.

Its so great when you can save stuff from being scrapped. I also try to save original hardware as much as possible, rarely do I replace any bolt. Ive seen quite a few axles with gaskets for the king pins, but it seems like they just werent able to find shims, or had no clue it uses shims and they just tried to seal things up. Really neat progress looking forward to seeing how you continue!

I can't really speak to the different model of NAS. The issue was tied to a specific faulty Intel atom cpu model. These Intel atoms are soldered directly to the motherboard so I do not believe replacement is an easy option. Certainly not upgradeable like a socketed cpu.

Finally reached that "running like a sewing machine" stage. The valves are adjusted, the carb is fantastic, the ignition timing is dialed in, it's running great. It's scrap, though? Adding body filler and "restoring" it would be a waste of effort and material. I wish I put the effort and time to make videos like you do. This kind of stuff, although not as extreme, is what I do most of the time, and I do find it fun and entertaining to watch. I never miss anything from your channel or metalshaper. I once worked on a pair of axles in actually worse condition from what you have, just to save some parts. It was from a CJ5 that was used on a shrimp farm, where the land was all sand and out in the ocean. Poor thing was so rusty, that when they decided to stop using it, the front axle housing rusted in half shortly after. Salt and rust aside, it had no maintenance and really disgusting black oil and grease, so nearly everything was destroyed. In the end just the drums, 2 of the backing plates, knuckles, spindles and front hubs were usable, all else was junk! But I do have faith on this axle of yours, it does seem to have many good parts! Keep up the good work!
