The axle looks amazing! Excellent work, huge difference from what it was, a true testimony of how things in awful shape can be fixed! Hmmm I wonder if the no shim situation explains why the pinion was so worn and beat up, or they took it apart and put it back together with no shims and left it outside. It is great that you were able to complete the pinion setting tool.
I'm a strong believer in repairing things that are fixable. While it would have been easier to throw this axle away and find another candidate, I enjoy the process of fixing things. Even if the "fix" is a complete overhaul.
My number one advice on this rebuild is to use Loctite on the ring gear bolts. They are of poor quality from the factory and love to back out. Loctite goes a long way, it's actually better than the original safety straps. Even Spicer/Dana got rid of the safety straps in later years. I do reuse the straps, but only if the axle came with them as decoration, but I rely on the Loctite to do it's thing. Hopefully the marking compound arrives soon, looking forward to the next video!
Way ahead of you on that :) I couldn't find bolts with holes for safety wire so I'll be using the safety straps like original, but red loctite for actual holding power.
@@SunkCostGarage metalshaper mentions in one video where he got some overkill high quality aviation bolts that are drilled for safety wire. He used them in a Dana 41, as the Dana 41 uses specific bolts, for the other axles you can just buy a newer bolt and be fine. Can't wait to see the end result!
