Comparing Sows at Different Months of Pregnancy: www.RaisingKuneKunes.com

A kunekune sow has a gestation period of 116 days. However, if you are unsure of the date she got bred back, there are some physical signs you can look for to give you an idea of about how far along she is. Belly size can be deceiving, so the two things you want to pay the most attention to are teat development and appearance of the vulva. The closer she gets to her due date, the back two teats...

Suggestions on Farrowing Pens: www.RaisingKuneKunes.com
Переглядів 2,7 тис.4 роки тому
If you don't have a barn, this is the next best thing. The most important aspects of any farrowing pens are: *Piglets stay out of the elements (specifically wind and rain) *No bedding (it's a hazard to the piglets, and increases piglet crushing) *Momma's feed/watering bowl is away from the piglets It's a big bonus if your pen is set up in a way that momma can get out, but very young piglets can...
Cows and Kune Kunes: how do they get along? www.RaisingKuneKunes.com

A lot of people wonder how their kunes will get along with their other farm animals. The answer is the same for cows as it is for sheep (we have those, too) and any other farm animal. Kunekunes get along with everything. They're so docile and uninterested in their surroundings. They truly are an easy and worry-free addition to your farm set-up!

    I love kune kune. But I can't trust the size estimates anymore. One source says they average 100lb. Another source 175 - 200. Another, 300. Which is it? There's a very large difference between 100lbs and 300lbs. 😂 I have a small property. I can't afford to buy a pair of breeders and end up with 600lbs total of pig. I just don't have the acreage. 😅

    Hi thanks for this video! I have a sow that I've been watching for pregnancy signs. we've had her for about a month. if she was bred when we think-she is due in about 3 weeks. she doesn't have much teet development but her vulva just became puffy and a little more pink (not crazy puffy but noticeable). will the vulva do this 3 weeks out? everything I read says the vulva doesn't begin to swell that early before farrowing. I'm worried she's in heat instead. thoughts?

    Yep, you're absolutely correct, KP. I've wormed my kune-kune pigs using an Ivermectin dewormer paste. I gave a good dose of paste tucked/stuffed inside a sweet cinnamon bun. After ingestion, it did not take long before worms were sprawled throughout the pig's dump area. Once worms are discarded, the pigs are as frisky as ever, eating like pigs, and gaining weight. One time, a five month old piglet showed signs of being lathargic so I paid close attention to her as well as her sibling piglets for signs of worms or anything else out of the ordinary. Thanks much for the informative video. 👍🏽🤠 12/26/22

    We have to do this at some point. Right now our two are sharing a fence line. I’m so nervous about putting them together! We just had to move a newer gilt up to the farrowing pen through our area where our first sow is and they even got in a fight! 😩 I also had someone strongly advise me to not get more than one boar and that it can be super dangerous for us and all of that. I realize they are animals and we always have to stay aware but after she kept telling me how bad of an idea it was it made me a bit nervous. Obviously we did it anyway lol but I don’t want a seriously injured or dead pig.

    • @kunekunepigs4461
      @kunekunepigs4461 2 роки тому

      I understand, but honestly theres no need to be nervous; it will be fine in the end. And we currently have about 15 boars together in our "boar paddock." No danger to us or our children. The only thing I suggest is not to try and 'break up' a boar fight once it has started. You could get hurt, but it wouldn't be intentional or directed at you from the boars themselves. You could just get knocked down or cut by a tusk. But even then, they wouldn't attack you or anything like that

  • @teramartindale432

    Thank you so much for your video great information.. Do you not care who's breeding who are they just meat pigs? Do you separate your sows when they're ready to furrow and when do you put them all back together again

    • @kunekunepigs4461
      @kunekunepigs4461 2 роки тому

      Yes, we do. I highly recommend doing so, as well. We put them in their own pen about 3 weeks before they are due to farrow, and then keep them separated from the herd (but with their piglets) until the piglets are 6-8 weeks old. We then separate the piglets, and put the sow in our "sow pasture." We then wait until it has been at least 13 weeks post-farrowing before exposing her to a boar again. Depending on several factors, we may wait until up to 18 weeks or so...just whatever works best for that individual sow's condition.

      It's hard to base it on vulva swelling alone, but if I had to guess, especially since it's at the 3 week mark (heat cycles typically occur every 18-21 days), then I would say that it's very probable that she isn't bred back
