Wood Turning Redbud with some rotten places in it that resulted in some pretty neat character
Hello, Thanks for tuning in, I hope you enjoy the video, in this video I will be turning some Redbud brought to me from my friend Paul Benners, the piece had a little spalting and some rotten places that gave the turnings some pretty cool character, also some tiny limbs that had tried to grow and I was able to keep those where they could be seen in the rim of one and in the bottom of another, was pretty cool,

    Now then Mate you've been busy this time, beautiful grand markings inside before you even picked chisel up, the saw soon sorted the job out. Looking forward to the finished bowls. Yep been just a little busy 😄 Those things are drying pretty good, We didn’t have as bad weather here as other places did, We are having some cooler temperatures here also in the morning, the days are nice and warm though still, haven’t turned on our heater yet either, was 44 degrees Fahrenheit this morning, Take care buddy 🤝

      Howdy Heather! Yep I think that was my favorite of em too, the different shades of green are something else, I was hoping to find some feathering grain since that chunk of wood had all those tree branches that had grown on it but didn’t find any at all, I was contemplating on a chunk of Black walnut for the next project 😁 It’s a piece of a walnut tree root

      It’s actually my Dad’s 😄 I worked for my dad for years we built kitchen cabinets, we sawed our own lumber also have a dry kiln, custom built cabinets and furniture fireplace mantles and stuff, Have a good one buddy 🤝

    That is some beautiful wood Kimsey! Lots of features in those pieces for sure. Last week I was given some fresh cut RedBud and can hardly wait to turn some. I was shocked at how big they were. But that is based on the Oklahoma Red Bud we planted a few years ago. It is not supposed to get real big but the leaves are sure looking pretty. Simply amazing looking after you let them swim in that tub. Take care my friend, Gary

Thanks I appreciate it!😎 Yep I hear they ain’t supposed to get that big either but I guess it does just depend on the place as you said, I didn’t even know about the stuff until my neighbor told me about his he had and the power company cut it down couple years or so ago that had grown into the power lines, figured I would just soak it good, can’t see the grain good with all those soap suds 🫧 😄 I got crate Myrtle trees in my yard, I may have to get a Redbud tree to, Have a good one Buddy 🤝

      Yep some crazy colors, so far they are doing good surprisingly after the stuff I did a couple ago I was a little bit worried about serious warpage but so far so good keeping my fingers crossed 🤞 still though!😄

    We have a lot of redbud trees around here but I haven't been able to snag any for turning. My wife probably wouldn't want me to cut down the one in the yard 😊.

      I wouldn’t have this stuff to turn myself but a friend brought it to me, last time I got my hands on some, the tree had grown into the power lines and the power people cut that one down, If any of the trees happens to grow into the power line you may get a good excuse to have one cut down and get to turn some then! 😎 Power people cut the trees down for free if it gets in the way of the power lines. Have a good one buddy 🤝 maybe you will get to turn some soon.

    I used it on a elm bowl oil only been testing it myself to eat out of. Holding up good but it is starting to look a little dry. can always rub another coat on. That walnut is beautiful.

      Thanks for the info on how it is holding, that’s good to know 😎 I’ve got to get a couple bowls made with it so me and my wife can do some testing on it as well. I just put one coat of the oil and one of the wax.

    You've got some beautiful walnut bowls there Kimsey. I use oil & beeswax on all my stuff. I've started wet sanding with 600 grit and oil for my final grit like Kerry Corney does. Makes the surface feel silky smooth and hides small scratches well. Take care, Stuart

    Walnut is beautiful. We have an abundance here, so much so that folks will burn it for firewood. The Mahoney’s is good stuff; if you put more coats it will also become shinier.

      Thanks for the advice Lee!👍 I knew of a place where there was so many cherry trees they were burning it for firewood in North Carolina, they are quite a few walnut trees here too in certain areas, cow pastures and peoples yards mostly, I love turning the black walnut but the dust is pretty rough,

      @@kimseyjustkimsey5256 l have to be more careful with it too. I wear one of those arm sleeves you see BB players wear to reduce the amount of contact with my skin. I’ve heard it is easy to develop an allergy to it and at times I’ve had some skin irritation. It’s not much protection but every bit helps.

      Thanks Gary! I ain’t got a clue but I will keep you informed about it, I did hear that it’s not supposed to evaporate like mineral oil, so time will tell, I only put one coat of the oil and one coat of the wax.

      I've been using this for a few years now on utility bowls and on hard maple guitar necks. Excellent product. I do refresh the finish with Mahoney wax if a piece sits in the gallery longer that 6 months. The finish really penetrates, still there if you sandpaper it later. I don't bother with gloves since the oil feels good on my hands.

      @@kimseyjustkimsey5256 No comparison to mineral oil which is a petroleum product that evaporates away very quickly. Much superior. It's pure walnut oil treated, without additives, which makes it a hardening oil unlike Tung oil.

      Thanks Paul! 😎 Yep that chunk of walnut had multiple tree branches where i cut that chunk off, must have caused that crazy grain,but I recently cut a different wood with a few branches, don’t look like it will have the same results but I’m hoping i run into some as I turn it.

    Beautiful results!! Argh I just love Walnut! What size diameter was the largest blank when you started (if you could guess??). Ive been working on a super old lathe with small 10" diameter capacity and want to upgrade and curious what size lathe could pull off something like this project. Very nicely done and thanks for sharing your soapy water trick, I am a newbie so any new info helps!! :)

    Kimsey, the texturing tool doesn’t work so well if the wood density on one side is different to the other. That’s why you had problems. Lovely piece of wood that put up a decent fight.😊

Glad you enjoyed the video 😎 Yep that grain I don’t know that I’ve ever had a chunk of walnut like this one, there were multiple tree limbs that could be seen that had been cut off of the tree, and the log had been laying on the ground for a long while and the white sap wood was all pretty much rotten, I’ve turned the smaller one and so far they are drying good, Have a good one 🤝
