Hi Kimsey... A lot of hollowing there but sooo worth it... Beautiful colours and spalting in the Bradford Pear... Well turned... Take care my friend...All the best.....Andy
Hi 👋, Kimsey , I hope you are all keeping safe and well, stunning looking 👀 wood, with dramatic music, 🎵, it was great to watch, and to listen to, as I listen to my music and UA-cam channels, through my handmade transmission line, loudspeaker cabinets, that I built just over 40 years ago, They produce dramatic bass, I/we look forward to seeing how you finished your bowls, Hopefully in a future territorial, stay safe, keep up the great work, Phil from the moulin France
Howdy Phil! 👋 That’s pretty cool! I love a good sound system and some good bass, that’s Awesome 😎 I like dramatic music as you can see 😄 Definitely gonna have a follow up video of them finished, the moisture content was to high at the time to apply a finish, maybe have a video of them with a finish on them in a week or so, Take care buddy 🤝
Fun, easy video to watch, Kimsey! Man, that's some big Bradford Pear! I didn't know it grew that big. Nice spalting in some of those pieces. I really like what you've done with them so far. I bet they finish up beautifully! 😃 Phil
Glad ya enjoyed the video Phil!😎 Yep it was pretty big stuff, it came from south of here about 2 hours away a man hawled it up here, one of his requests was burnt charred round bowl’s 🔥 He liked the other charred stuff I had did but wanted round bowl and told me to feel free to 🧪 so I did, hopefully that was his vision he was trying to explain to me, ended up pulling some more stuff out of that fire that I had thrown in later through the day just couldn’t let go of them 😄 just couple other pieces, Have a good one buddy 🤝
Thanks buddy, they are doing better than I expected 😊 few cracks formed in the pieces I threw in the fire but they follow through with the charred lines, nothing to major, gonna have a follow up video of all of them, thankfully the charred ones didn’t crack all the way in half that’s pretty rough on wood, just heat from a torch but thrown in the fire, just hoping for the best 🤞😄 Have a good one 🤝
Big BIG Bradford pear! The type grown out here in the Pacific Northwest doesn't get anywhere *near* that size. Very nice color and figure, too. Nice! 👍
It was pretty Big, only my second time tuning Bradford, the man that gave me that log brought it from 2 hours south from here, the other stuff from some years back wasn’t that big, not sure on the sizes it grows around here, Y’all are welcome to borrow my saw my dad has a bigger one if ya need it 😄
Awwwww mate that wood is beautiful i really like cherry and apple but that pear's something else, some great grain on the big one, great video, that rainbow was a good catch. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thanks Gary all the best to you too Buddy! Glad ya enjoyed the video 😎 That rainbow was strangely low in the sky compared to others I’ve seen, Have a good one 🤝
Good evening, Kimsey. Your videos sure keep me watching to see what's coming next. No doubt about it, these are going to be beautiful bowls. Excellent video. All the best to you.
Wow, I only have a mini lathe (10x18) and I just cut down a huge bradford pear in my back yard early this spring that had been split by a storm. I should have enough wood from it to last me for years! LOL! Had I known I was going to get a lathe I'd have saved the big black walnut limbs and maple limbs that came down in a storm last year.
That’s pretty cool it’s some Beautiful wood😎 I started out on a lathe that was intended for spindle turning only, didn’t have the correct tool rest for bowl turning and that’s what I wanted to turn was bowls, didn’t get bowl turning lathe till years down the road, I think the first thing I did on that lathe was turning a pine baseball bat, I ruined it through throwing rocks up into the air and hitting the rocks with it making massive dents in the bat, I didn’t have much sense when I was younger 😅 I also did manage to turn a few bowls on that lathe anyway because I was determined to do it, I’ve always kept it in my thoughts, where there’s a will there is a way, sometimes it’s a dangerous way though I had some lessons I learned scary ones Lol but I learned, a few things not too do on that lathe, just did the best I could with what I had, Take care and Happy turning 🤝
Very interesting Kimsey. They do look good. Might make good serving bowls for smoked pork shoulder which I love doing. Always fun watching you at work. Along with your nature videos and a peak at your cats now and then. Take care, Gary
Ohmygoodness Gary you’re making me hungry 🤤 😄, I love some good ole smoked pork too! Glad ya enjoy the videos, we got a new kitty hanging around the house, stray cat just came out of nowhere I’ve asked around trying to figure out who’s it is, want let ya near it to pet it but I’ve been feeding it trying to tame it for 2 weeks now, slowly moving a little closer but still very on the edge, Lucy gives it a stare down but it isn’t mean to her so thank goodness, I very much enjoy your videos too 😎 Have a good one 🤝
Cricky kimsey that Bradford pear Shaw has some pretty grain pattern, always look forward to your video's. When's the wife gunna turn some wood.Aussie Aussie Aussie GDAY MATE from brisbane Australia
Howdy Ernie! Glad you enjoy them buddy, got one of some Black walnut I’m currently working on for the next one, the wife has got into crocheting 🧶 been on that for awhile now, maybe sometime she will try it out again, Have a good one 🤝
Hey Kimsey how are you? Good to see you - I can tell you had loads of fun with these bowls and I really enjoyed watching! This wood is stunning it's just beautiful and I love what you made with it. I am really looking forward to seeing the finish going onto these bowls - have you decided what finish to use yet? Great editing too. And I love how you are able to put material back onto the turning blank just by putting your lathe in reverse! 🤣 All the best to you mate - thanks for the entertainment!
Howdy Paul Thanks !😎 I’m doing good, Hope you are doing well, it was a fun project, I’ve got to get a new chain for my chainsaw 😄 next project I used the same chain, I sharpened it but it cuts really crooked as you will see, Whopper sawed is what my dad calls it Lol, basically how I sawed it 😄 I’m thinking on a grape seed oil finish on the 2 smaller round bowls, possibly shellac on the he large one, the charred ones definitely shellac, yep if ya mess up just reverse the video Lol 😄 Happy you enjoy the videos buddy Have a good one 🤝
Great job with the burning. Thanks for sharing
