Homeschooling on a budget (when you weren’t planning on it!)
In August 2024 we made the snap descion to take our twins out of daycare and begin homeschooling. We couldn't afford private daycare, and we were a few weeks too late to enter public school Kindergarten.
Homeschooling to the rescue! Here are the choices we made to create a robust homeschool program just 2 weeks before we began and with a tight budget! Your milage may vary -- but you never know when you might need to educate your kiddos at home.

I homeschooled my son from k-3 many, many years ago (he is now in college). As secular homeschoolers, it was very difficult to find one suitable curriculum. We generally followed the outline set out in The Well-Trained Mind, but that was before they had fully set up their own publishing company. We did use their history books and many of their other recommended resources. We were fortunate to have a well stocked teachers' store to help supplement with workbooks, games, and teaching aids. The only suggestion I would add is to use your local library. It's free! I was able to check out so many books to help supplement what we were studying every week. The library is also a great resource now for finding others who are homeschooling. Back when I was doing it, there really weren't any groups available in my area. Now, they have a homeschool meet-up at least once a month. Just a reminder: One of the most wonderful things about homeschooling is how flexible it can be. It gives you the freedom to change your approach if you find something isn't working for your child. My son didn't enjoy crafting a replica of something out of clay nearly as much as he enjoyed the scavenger hunt that sent him around the house answering questions to get his next destination.

Hey Mama, you are doing great. I've been homeschooling for 9 years and we love it. My oldest went back to hs but my 12 and 8 yr old boys this is our life! While we are not religious, The Good and The Beautiful offers TONS of free items that are easily turned non secular. We use a lot from them bc they are free or cheap and gorgeous. As your girls are getting stronger reading, their Science readers are gorgeous if they still are available. We do everything on a budget from the early days doing Waldorf and making all the wooden manipulative to alsobusing Teacher Pay Teacher and searching "free 7th grade" etc. Your library is your best friend, from the programs which in NY are very enriching to the vast amount of books I can't say enough about. These are all ways to keep things on the cheap too. Also DT has a good amount of supplies and manipulative. Art can be found free in so many places a few of our favorites are Art for Kids Hub on UA-cam and Deep Space Sparkle. Also Read Aloud Revival. I'm sure you know all these but I gotta share! Last but not least keep up the reading! Books on tape and CD count Audible usually has a 1 month free too just cancel before lop OK I'm dome. Enjoy this time (magic tree house website has freebies tooooo!)

I've been homeschooling my kids since 2020 and stuck with it even after we could have sent them back. It was the best decision for our family. So much less stress for all of us, goodbye crazy morning rush, dealing with bullying, peer pressure, and spending money for extra fees that always seem to pop up with public school, etc. My kids are calm, focused, and are at or above grade level in most subjects. Homeschooling is not easy, and a lot of work but it's the kind of work that the results make worthwhile. We used Moving Beyond the Page as our base curriculum it is not cheap but in my opinion it a solid value for the investment. One of the ways we save on our homeschooling costs s to use the amazing resources at our public library, including, reading groups , skills workshop, and arts and crafts, all for free. In addition we are near three different colleges and a local art center and they have many lectures and events that are free and open to the public. Good luck on your journey, embrace the joyful parts, and trust the hard parts will fade with time.

For those wanting practice with phonics. Make flash cards of the phonic sounds and practice reading those. Play a slap game where you read the sound and they have to slap the card. Play hopscotch with the phonic sounds in each box. Do a bean bag toss on top of the flash cards. Feed the monster/shark game with the sounds. For reading words with those sounds, play a timer game. How many can you read in 1 min? Or how long does it take to read these 10 words? We do a word tight rope. Reading correct gets one step forward, wrong is one step back. Word search game- hide flash card words around the room and they have to hunt them down and read them. Baseball- create bases and they have to read a word to advance to the next base. This is great for tow kids to play against each other.

I too worry about price increases on food if tariffs are foolishly placed on all imported foods (such as coffee, tea, cane sugar, tropical fruit...) I also anticipate price-increases on domestically produced food when there are fewer illegals to hand-pick those fruits and vegetables that cannot be machine harvested and there is an increased demand for a finite amount of domestically produced food. So, I added to my stockpile of long-term food storage and now have zero storage space left for more dried food. What did I choose to buy? I have added some #10 cans of freeze-dried mangoes and bananas, some pouches of freeze-dried avocadoes; another 4-gallon bucket of white rice, a 25-lb bucket of wheat grain and some #10 cans of dried whole kernel sweet corn, yellow cornmeal, white hominy grits and mixed vegetables; some pouches or #10 cans of the freeze-dried version of pulled pork, peeled shrimp, boneless pork chops, sausage crumbles, cubed beef, ground beef and sirloin steaks; a #10 can of chocolate milk drink mix and many pouches of Mountain House instant meals, especially the freeze-dried cooked scrambles eggs with bacon. The Mountain House meals are quite expensive for the small number of calories per each of the one or two servings in one of those pouches, but they can be used as a topping over a generous portion of much less expensive cooked white rice, cooked plain pasta or prepared instant mashed potatoes or prepared dehydrated shredded potatoes. I have not stockpiled any foods I would not be willing to consume under non-emergency circumstances. Yes, I have given each item a taste test before I decided to buy more of that food. Yes, I have ways to grind wheat grain into whole wheat flour, with or without a functioning power grid. I consider long-term food storage to be insurance against starvation after a disaster and also a way of locking in food prices for future savings. Imagine what sirloin steak will cost 20 years from now if the cost of beef goes up just 5% every year (hint: the price increase is not just an additional 5% of the original price x 20 years; it is an additional 5% to the previous year's new increased price and this repeated with each increased price for the next 20 years). And the steak I bought last month will be perfectly fine for me or an heir to rehydrate 20 years from now and cook for a nice meal of skewered beef and veggies over rice pilaf. By then, beef may be a luxury item that few can afford, and most people may be eating plant-based faux beef. If you have not yet stockpiled food items that can store for a long time, what should you start buying? If you drink coffee or tea every day, I recommend stockpiling jars of instant coffee or some tea bags you have placed inside in vacuum sealed canning jars or put into heat-sealed Mylar bags along with oxygen absorbers or just buy the more expensive tea bags that are individually packaged in plastic wrap. You will miss having your daily serving of coffee or tea if you cannot afford to buy it anymore. Do pay attention to the number of servings listed on the package and make sure you have at least enough for 365 servings per coffee drinker or tea drinker. I would also stock up on granulated, white, real cane sugar and store that sugar in moisture-proof, air-tight, plastic or glass containers. Sugar can literally store forever if protected from moisture and vermin. If you are particular about the type of culinary salt you use in your cooking, I would stock up on that to. Pink Himalayan salt is imported, so is a lot of the sea salt sold in the U.S. Just store the salt the same way you would store sugar: in moisture-proof, air-tight, food safe containers.

Dead on. I'd note (not for you specifically, but people who may be reading this): - Many people do not have a fire extinguisher at all. They're not super expensive. People should always have those. - Rotating water every 6 mos is overkill. Even after a year, most water is fine. If in doubt, filter and boil. Also, know how to kill the cold water intake on your heater and drain it - that water is potable. - Keep an eye out for Mountain House Freeze Dried items on sale. Best on the market. Tried and tested. - Survive and Thrive is a book I ended up doing a short video about. Outstanding manual. Page by page, I found almost nothing to argue with. People should read it. Keep your loved ones close and ears perked. Good vid!

Things about tarrifs, is prices will rise on items that are made in the US that are similar to those items with tarrifs. For instance, tires, American tires, maybe $600 for a set of four, China import tires, $450. After Tariffs, US tires $650, China tires $610. That is high school economics. Sorry they no longer teach it in high school. But until the market is saturated American products will go up in price as well. We've got food, water, tools, power, fuel, lots of emergency stuff lots of lifestyle stuff. Also wife and I seriously garden, fish, But looking at the possible tariffs, I just got another pair of hiking boots, some cloth, garden twine, socks, underwear, windshield wipers, some car maintenance that would hit next year. Also on the list, TUNA, BATTERIES, a new garden hoe. Bought some metals earlier in the year, making some pretty good earnings with them. Topped off my supply of reloading components, I seem set for 4-7 years depending on how much we shoot. Pantry gets restocked as things come on sale in bulk and home canned veggies in season. It was a good garden, we have 85% or our annual veggies from our garden. Pantry is stocked somewhere between 6 to 18 months depending upon individual items.

Great video. I feel like things are about to get stupid expensive, so I've been stocking our pantry as well, buying new tires, laptop, and passport. Basically any big purchase that we can anticipate in the next few years we're trying to get out of the way now. The passport is just because I think there will be an influx of people trying to get theirs next year combined with government shutdowns/incompetence will probably lead to long wait times.

I just realized that I never fully stopped prepping. I just started doing different forms of prepping in the year of 2023-current. I was in a living space that was not ideal (8-unit shared building apartment) and so in October of 2023 I was able to move to a condo rental where my entry way to my living space is my front door from my little porch. Now, I think I'm going to switch gears back to stocking up before prices get even higher. I know I have a few gaps in my supplies right now like toilet paper and a better water supply.

I'm so glad you're around, because it was driving me *insane* trying to find information about disaster preparedness, etc. that DIDN'T end up making me uncomfortable or pissing me off with some of the rhetoric. I'm very much on the left, an atheist, LGBT+, etc. And it was just... so freakin' draining. Literally found your channel today by looking up "leftist prepper".

Second comment for some things I'd love to see: - Growing various kinds of foods - Tips on making weed-free gardens and removal of weeds - Canning and preserving foods - Growing foods that are easy and healthy - Surviving with no electricity or running water, just in case, especially in winter - Water Filtration - Surviving the heat, especially good for people who live in states that dont have Air Conditioning - Anything to do with protecting myself should I be attacked my others - Protecting yourself in general in a world where guns are so unregulated and everywhere - What sort of things are best for a strong, healthy pantry - Keeping pests such as weevils out of your pantry and flour/grains - Tips on staying healthy as possible when medical care isn't likely to be available - Tips for low/no-income households to survive in general since SSI and Affordable Care Act will likely be abolished - What to do when youre not able to get live saving medication (I know this one might not be something possible from you, but curious on your take on this topic) Just to name a few

Im glad you came back. Never heard of you or your channel before, but as a trans man, Im terrified for myself, the women in my family, and all my POC friends, we need to buckle down and learn to be self sustainable and protect ourselves for whats to come, both financially and with our new found lack of rights. Looking forward to learning from you!

How about the role of money in prepping and how to keep your money safe, whether in the USA or abroad, how to keep access to your money if you have to flee your home and/or country?

I'm having a friend of mine who knows how to sprout native plants plant some black kohosh this winter. It needs to be cold stratified. If abortion is going to be illegal all over, maybe this is a topic to be discussing?

I'm from Brazil and just found your channel. It's so good to find someone like-minded that I can follow. Everything prepping I have access to is from right or far right.

I want you to know this video is the reason I found your channel (I've been binging your content since) and I'm so thankful for it. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to watch a video on water filtration or food storage and then get hit with an alt-right talking point out of nowhere. Your voice is both necessary and appreciated.

FEMA, under Biden and Harris, withheld resources and did exactly what you fear Trump would do. You're just another progressive suffering from TDS.

Factually inaccurate, and I can say that bc I’m in NC. Check your media consumption.

Bi-racial, ably disabled, most of the prepper folks I'm subbed to are PoC. They're generally less than 10k channels, moderate right Christian bent but I don't think they 'get along' with the mainstream anymore than I do. Since the pandemic I've been done extending the olive branch to people who think I don't have the right to exist. For the mainstream demographic, I give Praxis Prepper a lot of credit.
