Media Censorship During The Troubles
The 1991 made for TV film The Treaty is a dramatization of the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty negotiations.
It was the brainchild of, Roger Bolton, a current affairs producer who had spent the previous decade struggling against the British government's censorship of topics related to Northern Ireland.
It also came out during the same year as the 75th anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising. In the Republic of Ireland (which had its own restrictive censorship laws under Section 31 of the Broadcast Act 1960), attitudes towards the revolutionary period had shifted since the outbreak of the Troubles.
This video will explore censorship of matters relating to Northern Ireland in both the UK and Ireland. As well as the attitude shift away from irredentism in the Republic which coincided with conflict.

Ireland: A Beacon Against Fascism?

On 28th April 2021, Taoiseach (Prime Minister)Micheál Martin claimed in an exchange with conservative TD Mattie McGrath, that Ireland was a "beacon against Fascism" in the 1930s. The 2020 General Election saw a radical shift in Irish politics. Sinn Féin emerged as a new force that threatens to disrupt Ireland's near century-old two party system. This shift is comparable to what happened with the emergence of Eamon de Valera's Fianna Fáil party in the late 1920s. A time when Ireland's establishment party, Cumann na nGaedheal, used fear of communism and the IRA to tar the...

    As is almost always the case, carpetbagging ruled the roost, and the ordinary people were deliberately stripped of everything meaningful just to satisfy the obscene greed of the very few at the top of the heap. Capitalism is not democracy, it's just a particularly pernicious form of plutocracy. Amputate that particular cancer from societies and we might just stand a chance of a worthwhile life for everyone, east or west.

    While i did not agree at all with the GDR's form of communism, subjugation of its population, banning travel, and religion, these are personsl things that should have been allowed, therefore, their state would have survived much longer. Everybody gets nostalgic, i do, i was fascinated by the DDR, they actually achieved a lot, despite its repressive form of communism, there are many different types of communism you know, not just one. They had one of the best trained and most formidable armies in the world. They sent satellites and people into space, and they often came second or third in olympic medal tables, yes there was state drug taking programmes, but most country's athletes were on some form of drugs from time to time. Their unemployment levels were among, if not the lowest, in the world. There was virtually no crime at all in the DDR. One of the biggest sporting programmes in the world encompassing its national population existed in the DDR. They were generally speaking, fairly self-sufficient in product manufacturing. They had the highest ratio of women in the workplace in the world, and state persecution aside, thats a pretty amazing list of achievements.

    It's interesting, because even though Australia has always had a market economy, we had high Tariffs (Taxes) on imports that enabled our high wage manufacturing sector able to compete with imports. These Tariffs were gradually reduced from the 70s onwards, and were just about gone by the 1990s. Once we made just about everything, clothing, cars, buses, building products, home appliances, just about everything was made here. Almost our entire manufacturing industry was gone by the 90s, resulting in high levels of youth unemployment. Our car industry held out a little longer than other industries, largely because of large government subsidises. When the government decided to stop paying these subsidises, the industry was gone within a few years. Last cars made here were in 2017.

    6:16 The Allies did the same. The few functioning factories and plants in West Germany were also dismantled and transported to the victorious countries of the world war. Some factory infrastructure from West Germany even ended up in the USSR. And another point, which is a common misconception, is that Germany gained a lot from the Marshall plan.... Germany was the smallest receiver of funds from the Marshall plan in Europe and the total amount of 1.4 billion dollars is a drop in the ocean when you put into perspective that every city in Germany was either completely flattened or partly destroyed and Germany's complete infrastructure was also in ruins...

    There's nothing racist or homophobic about the "Mr Ezgenides" passage. The man's ethnicity (and he's actually Greek, not Turkish) is not frowned upon. This 21st century obsession with alleged racism and Homophobia is just another symptom of our waste land.

      Smyrna was a Greek city but located in modern Turkey. Smyrna is now Izmir and would've been at the time of TSE writing TWL. The character is implied to be an untidy, uncivilized, man who represents the people of the new post imperial nations. Eliot was not a fan. The Canon Street Hotel was meeting place for gay men and wasnt far from where Eliot worked. So he was likely aware of that fact. This is all fairly common in readings of the section ive seen. Finally, while I enjoy some of Eliots work he was a bigot and a snob. That's not a modern interpretation.

    • @str.77
      @str.77 8 місяців тому

      @@TheUnemployedHistorian Smyrna was subject to Turkey in 1922 but until the two-way deportations following the Greco-Turkish war - which was waged at the time TSE wrote the Waste Land - was a Predominantly Greek city. (And it was still called Smyrna - just like Constantinople was still called by that name - only Kemal's regime Turkified these names.) The name Eugenides suggests Greek ethnicity. Also, it would explain why is located in London - he cannot go back to his hometown. The character might be untidy - but in ordre to make this this racist, one has to add the idea that Greeks (or even Turks) are racist. Otherwise he is just an untidy man who happens to be Greek. I am also not disputing that the places mentioned are associated with homosexuality (an additonal information I am thankful for) but that an American staying in England (or whomever Eugenides approached) is less than thrilled about such a proposal is hardly "homophobia". Eliot might have been a bigot or a snob but there is nothing bigoted in this passage - in fact, all these complaints about bigotry quite often are born out of an insistence that a barren waste land is fine. ("How dare you wanting more!") Hence, my closing comment above.

    • @TheUnemployedHistorian
      @TheUnemployedHistorian 8 місяців тому

      Eugenidies is a trader of some kind. The presentation that he's foregin and unsavory to the speaker. If we take him as a combination of Turkish/Greek that seems to be thematically fitting as a symbol of empires (Greek or Ottoman) reduced to scruffy blokes with bad french offering to take dissintere men on sexy weekends in brighton. The character is depicted in the text as an unsavory person because he is untidy, speaks bad french, is coded as gay. It's a character that is representative, in the poem, of the decay and rot of modern society. Which feels very like a thing a bigot would say in my opinon. it also comes before the typist and the young man carbuncular in a section that's very much about sexuality/a lack there of/the failure of people to be able to procreate. Mr Eugenidies because he can't because's gay and the others because they've been working too hard. The order there seems important too as to what the text sees as "worse". In my opinon, That TS Eliot had some awful opinions that's well documented. He was a racist, he was an antisemite, he has some well documented issues with women. I still enjoy the poems but .... he wasn't a good dude. A lot of that comes through in the poem for me.

    The break-up of the IRON Curtain was "free game" for the financial elite to blindly steal the respective workers' share of their collective capital invested into their industries for which they worked. In economics we call it "slash & burn" take you want & destroy the rest or "corporate raid" where a functioning company is bought off & stripped of its assets as they worth more individually. Leaving the workers stranded. The final action is a hostile takeover where a company is bought off by a much wealthier company to the detriment of the proletariat by way of restructuring, (job losses) outsourcing functions etc. . Shock therapy/hijacking was planned & executed with sheer brilliance only a German (ably assusted by the US & UK) could engineer as they focused on the social & cultural freedom to sell to the proletariat of the Iron Curtain while the seedy cartel of toxic capitalists paid pennies for large industries, medium & small businesses. Moreover vast farmland. It was an absolutely corrupt process where poor East German officials were bought off by the respective capitalists. Their symphony was so well orchestrated that even Beathoven, Wagner & Mozart would be jealous. The only positive I can find is that at least the financial elite is not as bloody thirsty to dissent as their neighbours to the east. If you are under 30 & made it this far, capitalism is the real world of Monopoly. The capitalists accumulate wealth by themselves, handover to their descendants. If the descendants are successful over time they will accumulate & grow said capital to use this capital to buy off their supplyside chain (vertical integration) & competitors (horizontal integration). Thus forming a monopoly. The role of government and the law is to act in good faith with the sole purpose of public good however "that train left the station long ago." If we carry on in this trajectory we will have a neo-feudal system in power. I am certain of it.

    Irish were indentured servants with contracts, far superior to being a slave. Once they fulfilled their agreement, they were free to live their lives. Money was sent to their family back in Ireland regularly, and a small stipend was provided; their kids were not automatically indentured servants. Irish indentured servants were also permitted to take their masters to court if they had evidence of cruel behavior. White people will also rewrite history 😂. That is why it's essential to keep accurate records and teach natural history as it happened in schools.

    Yes. The fiction of Irish "slaves" in the Americas belittles the very real sufferings of Black Americans under chattel slavery for centuries. It is a negative variation of "stolen honor" - people who have never served wearing other peoples' medals to get steal their credit. Here it is "stolen suffering". Indentured servitude for a limited term was quite bad enough without pretending it was something even worse.

      sure it doesn't suck, if you benefit from it.

      @@TheUnemployedHistorian That is basically every economic system. You have a better chance of success in Capitalism. Of course most "capitalistic" countries are not really capitalistic in the first place. The government picks the winners and losers (i.e. whoever dumps enough money in their pocket). Human nature is what really sucks at the end of the day.

      apropos of nothing, a google search for the definition of capitalism gives the following description: "an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit." Which sounds almost exactly like what you've described and called "not capitalistic". "Success" is a fairly broad term. I think it's actually one of the issues former citizens of the GDR ran into post-unification. The idea of success as being the accumulation and attainment of things, according to some of the sources I cited in this video, ultimately proved hollow for many. Success, in my eyes, would be the basic needs of every citizen being met before we go into talking about how the accumulation of stuff or whatever individual success means to anyone.

    What always strikes me is how much political activity there was to have a better, democratic, but sovereign DDR. All that was crushed by Helmut Kohl's push to a 50% +1 majority for reunification and the "Western System"

      Also, SED and MfS officials had already moved themselves into leading positions economically
