3 Things they don't tell you about German cars
Hi everyone, in this video I breakdown the 3 things people will not tell you about owning a German car. I think many people buy these cars for prestige and performance. But there are drawbacks that often go unshared.

Was a BMW fan for years, but the reliability /quality has really dropped off . Bought Lexus lc 500 recently it feels much better quality than the BMW 840 that I was also considering.
@@PaulKelly-j3m mate you have made an excellent decision. If you have an instagram page for the car I’d love to follow. Probably a dream car of mine in lieu of the LFA.
I totally agree, btw, Lexus is a scam for luxury cars. totally unworthy.
The comparison is totally off!!! Mainstream cars VS high tech real luxury cars!!! And not all are bad and not all get the proper maintenance!!! That’s why people fall for the “luxury” Japanese cars the let’s be honest…… are just rebadged mainstream cars in this case from Toyota,Honda and Nissan!!!! Are more simple cars without all the stuff the germans put in their cars!!! Now the driving and care of the cars makes a big difference….. im not saying the all German cars are good..NO! But some models like the 7 series is known for major issues so why buy 1? Get a 3 series or 5 the some years have better than others or C class or older E class!! Is that simple!!! Driving a Toyota is not the same thing than driving a German car and yall know that! I’m 100% sure if the germans at one point make reliability a priority like they did once…… all the owners of Japanese “premium” cars will buy one and those brands will go quietly!!!! F sport? Everyone knows the those guys want a AMG or M series!!!
HN.
The correct comparison is in between entry luxury German and Japanese cars. Meaning there should've been a direct comparison between Lexus, Acura, Infinity and Mercedes, Audi, BMW. Except some performance and other show off luxury parts, the Japanese win because of a far, far better reliability (Lexus is #1, while BMW is barely #9), low TCO (while the German counterparts have a double, even triple TCO=Total Cost of Ownership), durability. I walk the talk: after using too many entry luxury German cars (with issues even inthe first years of warranty) I switched to only top Japanese cars like a Lexus hybrid (already more than 5 years with ZERO issues). I am never getting back to German or ex-Swedish brands (Volvo is now Chinese), I am only interested in the leaders of the segments covering my needs.
I owned a civic type r fk8, 2 golf r 7.5, Evo 8, 3 sti, 3 c6 z06, 3 6th gen zl1, gr corolla, new Supra 3.0, m240 xdrive g42, m2 g87. I have tracked half of them as well. What I have learned. Gr corolla is great in cold weather but in Arizona in 115 degrees my camry hybrid was more fun to drive. Honda is terrible, It over heats on track and grinds 1-2 at high rpm’s. Chevy is great powertrain but is a hit and miss on reliably sometimes(small things). Golf r garbage reliability. Bmw amazing powertrain and reliability while under warranty or if you’re lucky until 80-100k miles. Anything you treat like a race car is going to break like a race car. And if you are going to buy a race car and drive it like a Prius. Save the money and buy a Prius.
I have a 2022 m240 xdrive with a little over a year left of warranty. I am 100 percent getting rid of it before the warranty expires. I will replace it with a new camry or grand highlander max if I can get one. I also have a 2025 m2 g87 I will keep while under warranty. Great video and I agree with everything you said. Side note all the m performance bmw have switch to an unreliable b58 tu2 engine. So for 2025 the m240 and z40i are the only ones left with the reliable tu(technical update) engine.
Thanks for your comment mate. I enjoy people who can have a discussion and see the nuances of cars. Great input.
Decided to leave out the Japanese cars that can put perform .. very strange video.
@@juhichang7824 I cover the contemporary brands. There have of course been the likes of the LFA, GTR’s, NSX’s. But you get the point… currently, the Germans run the performance game.
@motoringfan understood... with that said then we also have to take into consideration the price ranges of the cars because I feel like prices of contemporary German cars is higher that japanese. Unless I'm mistaken about that.. basically you get what you pay for
@ I agree mate. And Japanese cars punch way above their weight… a Corolla is more reliable and durable than cars costing millions of dollars!
Cars nowadays are made to be replaceable. Like my godfather said, that it's not like back in the day when one could buy a car that was meant to be passed on from generation to generation, to kids and grandkids. With nowadays cars you wont be able to do that. They make them to be replaced.
Dude, you have no idea!!! German cars are all going bankrupt because are overall shit!
This is a comparison between economy cars and luxury cars. Of course luxury cars are costlier to maintain.
Not so true for the Japanese entry luxury brands (such as Lexus #3 in low TCO and Acura #8 in TCO, Infinity being out of Top 10 reliability) with about third to a half the TCO of the German entry luxury brands (such as BMW and Audi, Mercedes is far down in reliability). For me? I walk the talk, one of my Japanese cars being a Lexus hybrid.
@@codincoman9019 This worship for Japanese cars is an American thing. Everybody else knows Japanese cars are disposable.
German cars uglier tho. Supra beats all. Old one. New Supra sucks, essentially just a Z3.
Ok kid
I got a high milage Civic Si 287K miles and and High mileage GTI at 240K miles. The GTI has cost me more though becasue I changed the the timing chain, and its had an oil leak . I just noticed that everything for the GTI is like 50 percent more or twice the price for things outside of oil changes. On the flip side, the VW feels better built, less rattles and more durable paint.
what years?
The main problem in my opinion are the buyer expectations, and that goes especially for American car buyers. In my eyes, German luxury brands and Japanese mainstream cars are not even comparable. If you want luxury, you WILL need to be ready to pay for it. Japanese mainstream cars cause less trouble because they use more simple ans also tried and tested technology. Luxury cars offer far more features and cutting edge technology, where especially with bad maintenance there is much more to go wrong. HOWEVER with good maintenance, they can still be very reliable, and most importantly the issues are fixable in a reasonable (for the type of product) way. Just don't let yourself be ripped off by bad workshops (where even official dealers in some cases should be avoided). If you are NOT ready for maintaining a car, especially a luxury product and just care for it with hopes and dreams, then you should not even think about it and definitely resort to a highly reliable and simple car that will forgive you for not treating it well. And for many people who just need a dependable car and think about buying a luxury brand just for the flex, they would be well off with buying a Toyota Camry or something in that class. These cars are definitely good enough for most demands, they offer a lot for the price and are cheap enough to own. Luxury cars really are mainly targeted at people who can afford to fulfill the very highest expectations in a car, and cheap used prices should not fool you. Meanwhile, entry level "premium" brand models are honestly more of a cash grab than a real luxury product, so a double loss on the buyers side. Know what you can afford. Ask yourself if you really want a luxury product or if it is just a facade for you. Mainstream brands make good cars, and especially Japanese models offer a lot for the price and will be dependable for a long ownership period.
Too many words. Lexus>> Acura>BMW>>Audi>>Mercedes. At least when studying the statistics on reliability and low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership).
VW = Victims Wanted AUDI = Always Under Diagnostic Investigation BMW = Broke My Wallet MB = Major Breakdown No the German cars are money pits, lying scamming dealers, and no where close to acceptable reliablity!!!
Good information 👍👍
LOL! Acura NSX, Lexus LFA, and Nissan GTR left the chat. No BMW can beat any of these 3 JDM legends.
When he said lamborghini is German, I know either he's on meth or he's gay for only dildo.
Drop in the bucket comapred to its german competitors.
N54 sounds better than b58 and n55 tho imo
the graph you used at 1:20 really doesn't give a good example of the depreciation of lux sports cars. Clearly the market on m3, m4, or any M except the M6 actually hold their values very well. Most of the cars that were listed are regular series bmws and of course maseratis where we all know they depreciate much faster
@@pukeii I agree somewhat. However, all M cars depreciate very heavily as well. Just not as heavily as other base models. You can expect the miles of M3/M4 to pretty much 1/2 their value at certain mileages. For many people, that means a 50k loss
shut up karen
en gin go bang bang
most people buy these brands to "feel" rich. My rich neighbor says it the best (he has about 15 to 20 million dollars cash and a whole bunch of millions in assets). Once you become rich, unless you love cars, you don't need to "feel" rich anymore because you "are" rich. And rich people don't want hassels, which is why they would rather have a Toyota that doesn't break down and they don't need to care for it like a baby, than some high luxury brand that they have to "take time" to "take care of it".
For my daily it’s always a Toyota. But if you want performance all around you have to go European if you can afford it. Japanese cars just don’t cut it sports cars wise. If you want a middle ground between performance and sensibility than fine. But if budget isn’t a concern, European is always the answer.
@@er98ah I agree completely. I think modern Japanese sports cars however do offer most of the performance regular people may want to enjoy without breaking the bank. But as you said, if you can afford it..then it is truly the euro cars that win.
All stupid and obvious reasons. Buy the car you want and can afford, that's all.
bmw mercedes and audi are... weird companies. They really try to sell their cars as "luxury" even tho theyre made out of so much cheap chinese plastic. Also theyre overpriced for what you get and break all the time. People really be having meltdown when 2 toyotas burn but everyone covers their eyes when brand new bwms blows their engine, granades its diff or throws a wheel bearing. Dont even get me started on mercedes that company fell off so hard after the 2000s their cars constantly creek and pop worse then a chinese toy this isnt luxury plus theyre unreliable asf i think its like bottom 10% of reliability, the only thing you get when buying a mercedes is a badge lmao.... dont buy from garbage german brands... just buy a lexus one of a few only real luxury car company in 2024
Sure, Lexus may be one of the most reliable cars but if were being honest, driving a lexus is about as much fun as doing taxes. German brands may be more expensive to repair and may be more unreliable, but they make up for that in the way they handle and drive. No lexus can drive in the same way a bmw or audi can. if youre happy driving around a car my grandfather would drive, then by all means enjoy yourself, but some people are more than fine sacrificing reliability for an infinitely more engaging driving experience. To the point about cheap interiors, having sat in all 4 brands you mention, audi and bmw have much nicer looking interiors than lexus. lexus interiors have remained the same for years and looks incredibly dated for how much youre spending on the car.
@blyobin3855 bruh you cant be real bmws and audi interiors are garbage so much plastic everywhere with nothing but lagy ass touch screens lexus has everything leather, metal or glass no cheap chinesse plastic. Plus the other point you made yeah bmw does outperform lexus but heres the thing right will a bmw ever sound as good as a lexus? Never. Not even their cheap ahh speakers that fake engine sound can help bmw on this one 😂. Lexus has the driving experience bmw is more of a "i wanna feel it pull and thats it" type of car. If you cant have fun in a lex youre just a voring person coping. Plus lets be real audis and bmws are one of the ugliest brands ever aight mercedes still looks fine tho.
@blyobin3855 germany is the new china remember that. Their cars arent what they used to be 30 years ago its time to get over it
@@nachocheese6107 i js fell for rage bait smh 9/10 cant lie
@blyobin3855 its ok youre obv unexperienced... a tik tok car guy you might get some experience down the road other then just scrolling
Brother. 1. Enjoy your life. You will enjoy driving in any German much more than any Toyota. 2. If you maintain your cars well they will not give you any issues. 3. Your m235 will not give you street cred. It is a base model BMW 4. You are a broke geek. No one wants or has asked ride in your Yaris. This sounds like a terrible attempt to cope for your broken ego.
im taking an s55 and n55 over a b58 7 days outta the week
This could have been summed up with just saying "dont buy luxury cars if you are poor". So if you have money then you should deff buy luxury cars because you will enjoy them way more. And if everyone had money, no one would be driving shit like Toyota.
Lmao. If you have money to waste get those luxury cars, but also keep the Japanese hero’s in your garage. Type R, NSX, GTR, LFA etc etc
@@motoringfan 🤡
Not really, the luxury of not being stranded on the side of the road is the best luxury of all. Bezos drives a Honda accord. Not to say all luxury products are built like trash.. Rolex and Omega are much like Toyota in that they’re built incredibly well and reliable.
@@anthonyb2990 excellent comment mate. Rolex and Omega are indeed much better than Audi/Merc/BMW. Those are luxury products that are indeed built to last.
@@anthonyb2990 Here we go again with this poor people perception that luxury cars explode after 5 years. Total false statement from jealous poor prople again. Of course your Toyota will last longer when it goes grandma speed. Try driving a Toyota like RS3 and lets see who explodes first. You need to understand that rich people are not driving the same car for 17 years like you are. Also no one said toyota is not reliable, but that ita just shit. And if there was a BMW,Merc… in front of you and a Toyota, you would always pick them and dont lie to yourself.
You need a M8 M4, AMG or rs5 rs7. Anything else people don’t say” nice Car” unless they know cars
Very true mate.
what about Porsche?
@@xman777b Porsche is a bit interesting. And like most German cars is highly dependent on the model and year. Many suffer from bore scoring and IMS issues. Recent models (997.2+) have been very solid. Porsche I consider more well built than your Audi/Merc/BMW but the trade is that things are indeed more expensive when they break.
@motoringfan thanks. I was considering an early generation Cayenne. Take care.
@@motoringfan😂 come on man. Bore scoring and ims was mostly Just an issue with 996 non turbo models
B58 is way more reliable, sounds better even better then the the s58 in my view and it looks better than the n engine
Well too bad then, i just bought an S3 😅
S3 is a great car with the EA888 motor. Under warranty or mildly used, it’s one of the best examples there!
"My Yaris has worn tyres" - perhaps would be a better title.
I’ll do that next time I do a tires video!
get all 4 tyres, this car's AWD just like Audi's Haldex, doesn't like different tyres. You will burn the differential and the AWD system itself
Fair comment I’ll discuss this with the shop
@@motoringfan I do not have this exact car. But, my trusted mechanic also likes to change all 4 tires at most times. Car will be drive better, more enjoyable, and most importantly - more safely.
@@prateekagraw thank you mate appreciate that. Notice you have the s3 which I love as well.
MONEY
When it comes to tyres, pay the extra and get the best. With a performance car like this, the only thing keeping you on the road is the tyres. Please, dont cheap out on tyres.
Very much agree. From all the shops I’ve spoken to though they’ve said that the kumho are very competitive. I could just get the tires Toyota put on it from factory (Dunlops) but I’m paying a bit extra for kumhos. I can’t quite justify the pilot sports as they’re more than double the price!
@motoringfan pilot sports are a tested and proven tyre. They're a trusted tyre used by most high-end performance cars. It's worth the money, even if it's 1% better. That could be the difference between you on the road or in the dirt.
The only reason that would make sense is cost
Because you cant afford it.
Is it that shit
No the engine has some fixable problems but u know people love to hste sbout bmw cause they dont have one 😂
And just to add to a previous comment... 4 yr ownership from new and uk. ownership .. see our road surfaces!!!! pot holes and rough surfaces there baaaaad.
for all the experts out there... ive done 50k miles in mine from new ownership.gone through pilot 4s and 5 had wheel alignment done to factory settings. same issue still as youve discussed... handling has its pay offs.
Why did you go for n55 over the b58? Its cheaper thats why
Holy shit I'm dying I love seeing him on edibles so scared 😅

I think you missed the point did u hear the gong
@@Ssingh_777 its a bmw nothing about it is reliable

@@NewKiwiJKbmw has like the most reliable diesel engine ever made
Mmmmm BMW tick
Is wheel rotation not a thing on that car?
Same thing happened on my STI. You better check the rears too. Mine did that on all 4! Cords were showing on the insides! I wouldn’t have noticed if I didn’t rotate my own tires.
The new tires would still end up with the same issue if you dont fix the alignment.
Those tires actually still have plenty of rubber left which is why they weren't advised at the dealership. The wear has to be 3/4 of the tire or showing cords for it to be considered illegal where I'm from (Check your location) but I wouldn't change them just for the inner edge unless they were dangerously low. If they're an asymmetrical design you can switch the fronts around, but the dealership should have advised wheel alignment and camber in any case or this will definitely happen on your knew tires. Also, I would recommend Eagle F1 Asym 6 or Hankook Ventus over Kumho, and I totally agree about avoiding Dunlop.
