Your comparison was good until you went into Rolexes... Most people get them as an investment. Believe it or not, they don't depreciate in value but gain as the years go by. Whether it's a BMW or a Toyota, sports cars are in a different category altogether. BMW does make regular sedans for regular commute, just like Toyota. And Toyota does make sports cars just like BMW. All sports cars are designed to perform, and with performance comes maintenance. What people don't understand is the aftermath of taking care of a high performance sports car, it's not something you can ride hard and put away wet. You have to pay to play, parts are going to be expensive because you can't install cheap parts and expect them to perform. There is no perfect manufacture when it comes to cars.
I would say it depends on models. V8s in general are not reliable from BMW. But BMW does the best inline 6 out of any manufacturer. So if the engine doesn’t have fundamental design issues (meaning random oil starvations, head gasket issues, piston rings, bearings and etc), given that maintenance has been done on time, it is assumed to be a reliable engine. To me Toyota just takes into account all of these scenarios and their engineering considers all corner cases which is beautiful. Example of which is 5.0 for Lexus F cars (I know not a Toyota but still) is reliable while being a performance engine. BMW has B58, S58, S55 that are very good motors in my opinion, given their complexity with Valve lift and timing system, they designed all oil passages, cooling and etc to make sure engine doesn’t randomly burn oil, doesn’t need timing job at 100k like lot of Audis do.

Agree!
