Halo: Reach, and the Death of the Spartan
How many videos can this guy make on the Halo series without actually covering the main Halo games? Find out next time on Halo Wars.
I have a growing love and appreciation for spin-offs and new perspectives, and Halo is truly ripe for choice when it comes to those styles of stories. Last year I covered ODST, and how it presents the perspective of what it means to be a Human in the Halo world. This year, with this video, I want to talk about the Spartans of Noble Team, and death in a way we hadn't seen in Halo before.

How I Learned to Love Elden Ring
Переглядів 32 тис.21 день тому
I've got kind of a weird relationship with Elden Ring; you guys mind if I talk about it for a minute or two? After 150 hours of Elden Ring, I was sad that I just couldn't see what everyone else saw in this game. So I started the process of making a video to discuss that, only for parts of Elden Ring to begin to click as I played the game past the 150 hour mark. So I made the call to do one fina...
The Stealth Archer Was Inevitable

I've put around 100 hours into Skyrim in the last year, casually popping in and out to just play around. Of course, I have another 400 hours or so across three different versions of the game, and no matter what I seem to do in any of them I always end up crouched, with a bow, in some shadowy corner, and today I want to figure out why. Republic Commando, and the greatest story in Star Wars

It's an older video game, but it checks out. Republic Commando is one of my very first games I ever played. It was virtually impossible for a child Thane to finish the game without cheat codes, and now that I'm an adult, with a fully functional adult brain, I just replayed it on the easiest difficulty. The bridge at Kachirho still has hands, hot damn. This video is to recognize Republic Command...

I think your kind of missing the point by not explaining that the entire society is run by the hunting of sentient wales. Nevertheless, the outsider asks you if you think your own sense of morals hypocritical. I think its interesting to believe that this game has "good" or "bad" endings in a game that has no heros. I'm reminded of BioShock when the real morality of the game is the perception of your choices being a responsibility or a consequence

Personally I find archery to be boring, it's an instant victory strategy. I find myself gravitating to stealth+dagger gameplay as the stealth tree incentivises but what annoys me is how prone to failure it is. If you spec into sneak, chances are you're planning on carrying loot that might not belong to you. You also may want more sneak rolls and power attacks to get the most out of that multiplier, so chances are you upgrade stamina more than health and you don't even touch magicka. It helps that the bar is green and the thief skills are all green leaning you in that direction as well. So basically, you're now a glass cannon by game design. High damage, but if you get caught, you die. This also means with an emphasis on stealth skills, you probably have very little skill points spent in anything that doesn't maximise your stealth gameplay. So, you have no points in shields, or two handed, and whatever you have in one handed probably is more generic because all you want to upgrade is your dagger, you don't care to upgrade maces or axes or swords because you don't use them. This means your gear probably is _just_ a dagger. With no perks anywhere else and an emphasis on loot via carry weight and stealth, why would you carry anything else? But enemy level scaling doesn't always play nice. Those Draugr deathlords don't care if you haven't found a glass dagger yet (since you've been playing stealth, you haven't been smithing to make one), they're going to tank your 16x multiplier hit and survive, and even with level 100 sneak, him and all the draugr around him are going to know where you are and kill you. Your only choice is to run away and _wait_ for enemies to lose interest, which is boring. And it's not just level scaling, there's scripting too. Enemies can sometimes just see you for no reason. Some will warn you to back off, some will trigger when you step over an arbitrary line, some will engage combat right out of dialogue. If you spec into stealth, and your gameplay revolves around having the first turn against the enemies, what are you supposed to do about enemies that don't care? While not Bethesda's fault exactly, this is ridiculously common in mods especially. Forced combat, who cares if you're a stealth build? And none of this is even mentioning dragons. And so, stealth dagger gameplay does come with a backup. The bow. Bows are lightweight weapons (especially since arrows are weightless) that even without investing in archery you still benefit from Sneak skill's perks, so might as well take a bow with you. Those enemies that won't die in one hit? Don't worry, shoot from a distance and they'll never find you no matter how many hits it takes. Enemy telling you to back off? Listen to his advice and shoot from a distance. Enemies triggering combat walking into a trigger field? Shoot them before entering it! Combat right out of dialogue? Shoot them before talking! Dragon? Shoot it! Stealth Dagger is a fun way to play the game. It becomes a puzzle of who can you kill and in which order to not alert everyone else. The failure state being getting detected because you made a wrong choice. But that fun evaporates immediately when you do everything right but still can't win and detection is forced, so you have to default back to Stealth Archer to clean up the problem before going back to a more fun form of gameplay.

Oh it was very much a 'you had to be there' kind of moment. If I recall correctly I just encountered a very stubborn NPC helper getting stuck somewhere on my plot, getting upset they couldn't move, quitting as a response, and instantly unsticking themselves only to freely walk off my plot. That, and I seem to remember the game being loaded with un-skippable cutscenes for every upgrade or unlock. I'll never be able to make a decent video on it, but it remains a joke amongst myself and my friends who where there hanging out while I played.

I also believe these games mastered something that I absolutely adore in games. Anger. Hate. This game makes you hate people. It makes you angry. It gives you time to connect to something before tearing it away. The betrayal halfway through the game is a perfect example. The anger and hatred the game filled me with after that moment was extraordinary. There's a reason to do high chaos and that reason isn't because it's easier, but because your angry. You're pissed off at the world and believe no one connected to these people deserve to live. Your angry and you hate these people. And that is such a fun way to experience a story.

It irritates me when people say games should be for fun. No games HAVE to be fun, but they are not FOR fun. Enjoying a game is what draws you in, but really games change you and force you to adapt to challenges to both your skill and your mind. Fundamentally that is an even better sensation than mere fun could ever be.

Who are you when noone can stop you? That's a very interesting question, and for me, I had a bit of self-revelation from this game, and who I am as a gamer, and as a person. Around the time the game came out, a lot of webcomics naturally made jokes about the game, and what it was like to play it. Penny Arcade did one about the joke of having 2 guards talking to each other, reacting to random noises that the player makes when sneaking around. And how most stealth games would have them say things like "Uh, must've been rats". In the comic strip, Guard A starts bitching at Guard B, who had said "Must've been rats" with "It's not rats Steve! It's NEVER rats Steve!! Why don't you just shut up about the damn rats!!" Then, Guard A, proceeds to be eaten by rats, to the confused response from Steve. At first, Steve is THRILLED that he was right for once! It WAS the rats!! But then the rats ate both of them, and thus the punchline. The caption to the strip was that one of the guys are Penny Arcade, was having a blast playing the "Pied Piper of Murder", using nothing but Summon Rats to clear every mission. I thought this was funny, so I decided to try it out, on a very rare (for me) Evil Run. I got to the brothel level, before I genuinely got sick, and just couldn't continue. The first time I had the rats eat one of the prostitutes, who was just minding her own business, I felt sick. I just didn't WANT to play like that. I don't LIKE playing as a bad guy. I know they're not real, but I'm still playing the main protagonist in the game, and when the game is First Person, it's really hard to not feel like it's ME in that role. And....I don't want to be the kind of person who casually kills anyone. I don't find any thrill in "indulging my darker urges", because I apparently just don't have those urges. I don't feel like it's a catharsis to play like that, I feel upset, I feel anxiety, I feel like I'd rather be doing ANYTHING but continuing to play that game that way. I stopped that playthrough, never to pick it up again. And any game that gives me the moral option of "do you do something to help someone else, usually at your own personal risk" or "do you harm someone for either no reason, or to further your own goals", I've pretty much accepted that I'm always choosing Option A in that scenario. It's not really even an option for me. Option B is just NOT on the table. I know the game offers it, but it's just not feasible for me, so it's not even going to be considered.

An interesting insight I had when going for the Mostly Flesh and Steal achievement (not buying any upgrades to your Outsider powers, only using the default, single rank of Blink), is that it's actually a LOT easier to play the game than you think. Because here's the thing....most of the map layouts, are simply filled with loot to fuel your upgrades. But if you aren't actually using whale bone, or bone charms, there really isn't much in the way of motivation to go explore the maps. Usually the only reason you go off the beaten path, is because you picked up your lover's heart, pointed it around, and saw "....ooh! There are 2 whale bones that way, AND a bone charm!!" so you go off to encounter whatever challenge is over there. And run the risk of having to actually cause harm to the denizens of Dunwal. But....if you don't embrace the temptation of the Outsider, to "be interesting", to go and try and find resources to make you more powerful, you really have no need to even bother. You can actually navigate the maps towards your actual TARGET, incredibly easy, with just the single rank of Blink. And since you aren't actively engaging with 80% of the map, or it's denizens....you can easily get a low chaos, no death, no detection result for each map. Because why bother? You're here to take out your target....nothing else. The rest of the neighborhood never even needs to know you were near, because you weren't. So the temptation to become stronger, in itself, the drive to obtain the resources the game tempts you with, is another layer of moral/ethical checks on the player. Will you go mess with these people just to accumulate wealth and power? Do you really need it? I'm sure you WANT it...the temptation is there but....is it needed? And the answer is....no, it really isn't. The first playthrough of Dishonored, I got both the Ghost and Clean Hands achievement. When I did my second playthrough to get Mostly Flesh and Steel, I thought it was going to be a frustrating slog of save scumming, and endless frustration to complete. But no joke, it was the EASIEST run I had of the whole game. Missions were super short, super direct, super focused. The only way it was difficult, is if I strayed from my objective, to try and gain wealth and power.

In some ways, it was almost more enjoyable at moments since it catered to the side of me that wants to help, who wants to make a difference. Who will offer a hand of friendship and aid, but also is willing to use that hand to shield those who can't defend themselves. I ought to try doing that empire again, never got far with it last time before an update required me to restart

No super powers No Augmentations Just a human, who *Somehow* manages to stand side by side with these otherwise superior warriors. I'd love to see another ODST, where the Spartans have to acknowledge your skill as a soldier. Maybe even make the Odst known to have turned down spartan Augmentation when offered?

Elden Ring is either too hard or too easy, you just won't find the sort of appealing middle difficulty anymore like you would in Dark Souls or Dark Souls 3. You can make it too easy with spirit ashes or broken builds like bleed but then too difficult by playing the game in a more standard Dark Souls approach.

16:31 One small thing I think you missed is that Jun isn't sent to simply protect Halsey. Carter tells Halsey that she's being escorted to Castle Base by Jun (Or rather "Noble 3", as Halsey I don't think refers to the Spartans by name other than Jorge, but by designation and number). She insists that she doesn't require an escort, but Carter ignores her and speaks directly to Jun, telling him to "Make sure nothing falls into enemy hands" to which Jun replies "I'll do what's necessary sir." This is how dire the situation has become. Even as the Covenant glass the planet, your team has been sent not on a rescue mission, but on asset denial. All they can do at this point is evacuate whoever you can and enact scorched earth of the rest. Halsey's discovery might be the saving grace of humanity, but at this point there's absolutely no guarentee we can turn the inevitable tide. Saving her life may buy us more time, but losing her will cost us more than we can afford. Humanity is expending the last of their most valuable assets not to achieve victory, but to forestall an inevitable defeat and Halsey, with her unparalelled insight and intellect, has become as expendable as the otherwise priceless Spartans she produced. On a practical note, it makes sense to send a Spartan on this job not just because they can be expected to save their last bullet for Halsey if necessary, but because of their survivavility. In Tip of the Spear we've seen that Spartans can survive a Kestrel crash that would kill or severely wound an unaugmented human. If they don't make it to the base, if they're shot down or caught in a firefight they have no hope of winning, Jun will almost certainly be the last man standing and he can make sure the Covenant don't have the oppertunity to take Halsey alive.
