13:49 New Zealand branch welcomes your shout-out, Dave!😄
This is on offer right now at an amazing price from a number of vendors.
Thank you so much for posting. I have walked all the Munros, but have been up Cross Fell twice, Pennine way being one. I did a solo ascent and met a lovely lady on the summit and we walked down (to the west) together. She said it was her favourite hill. In many ways I agree, it has a magic which is hard to find elsewhere.
Wonderful!
That was a very useful introduction to products I knew little about. Thanks
Placed an order last night as they’re doing 25% off. Looking forward to it coming to try out 👍
Great stuff Marc. Let me know how you get on. ATB Dave
Ty się nadajesz chłopie do tarcia chrzanu 😆😂😂😂😂😆
@GrzegorzMazur75 Thank you for your comment, the translation is'You're fit to grate horseradish, man.' Not sure if this is a Polish complement or insult! Either way, thanks for watching!
Sounds like this has held up well then? Seems like a bargain at the price, might go for one when my current winter shell bites the dust. I think Fjern are owned by/affiliated with Sportspursuit, hence why they're always discounted on there, might be wrong though. Great news about the Rothbury Estate too, a lovely part of the world might be about to get even lovelier. Happy days. Cheers for all the videos.
@jozefdoran7236 you are welcome my friend. You are right about fjern and sportspursuit being owned by the same holding group.
Don’t put fuel on the catalyst it will ruin it.once filled leave it to absorb the fuel for 30 mins before lighting
Will try it. Cheers.
I bought the Vern 3 and my intended use is to take it on my motorcycles to the outer hebrides, NW Scottish coast and Orkney and maybe Shetland eventually. I'm not into trekking yet, but I have the idea that if I can make a trekking trailer that can take the weight instead of my back, I can take all my heavy kit and the double pole set for some camping higher up.
@@andrewg9677 should be excellent!
There is a Zippo hand warmer , very much like the Whitby one . Can the petrol warmers be stopped as and when required ? I presume they have to be allowed to burn till the fuel is used up .
@@davidyendoll5903 I have tried by putting it in a sealed container. It worked and went out.
Only wimps use silly hand warmers. 😂
Or brainiacs.
@Fellmandave1 You forgot this 🧠... and a pair of 🧤
You could say the same for gloves, jackets, or whatever you like, if you're going to start gate-keeping warmth!
@@bluecheese1066 Or simply wear decent gloves 🧤 and never need to buy batteries or charge anything, no matter how cold ❄️🥶 it gets outdoors.
@@Globetrotter-1 Only wimps use silly gloves. 😂
I have to ask - you know, people invented something called gloves a long time ago - to keep hands warm in the winter? I've been using them for 38 years and they've never failed ;)
Hahahaha . Love it. As you can see in the video, i just gave them to the wife and son or use it for camera batteries!
38 years and never been in real cold, aye? When you're camping and you're not working, and your metabolism gets low, and it's genuinely sub-freezing, then you'll appreciate them.
@@ActualSurvivalisti have ADHD, i am never cold because i am never static (unless i go to sleep), but my commet was just a joke (there's even a ;) at the end)...
NEVER use a torch on those catalytic heads. it BURNS the active metals off.
Good advice, but from what source please?
@@Fellmandave1 it is written in the manual of many of those devices brands. the flame of a torch "jet" lighter is way hotter then a normal orange flame. you can quickly search and find many people talking about this online. personally i use the same pocket heater for many years and never had to change the element on it. it doesnt really worn off if you use it correctly.
Much prefer the Whitby, it can stay warm all day. I have a pair. They don’t like to get cold since they rely on the warm fuel vaporising , then reacting with the catalyst. There are other sites that explain it better than me.
Thanks David. Cool name BTW.
Ive the mongar2, but want something more suitable for our Welsh winters. Great review. Cheers.
Definitely a light wind tent this one Rick. Nortent Vern 1?
What about those ones with the little clicky circle in the gel which you can reuse by heating in boiling water?
@VenusBijou I have tried them. Found them very inconsistent. Good suggestion though.
Do you think the Whitby could be used with Ethanol?
@andrewg9677 It's a good question Andrew. I don't know. I will ask wild and moor.
Just brought my other half the electric hand warmers to help with her raynauds when we're out
@@xjessukx Ooh, Raynuads must be rough this weather. Very considerate.
I think you know my answer Dave. Got to be the Whitby warmer. Did you say there was a 10% discount?
@@Martycycleman yes, for new users.
I’d go for the electric version, I can be quite clumsy so would worry about using the other in a tent 😅 would definitely use inside gloves on a particularly cold walk. Thanks for demonstrating 😊
Good choice! i am getting ready for a cold camp this weekend and will be packing the Ocoopa.
@ enjoy 😊
If the candle is burning and one can manage to keep warming up the feet at a safe distance with soles facing the candle, whole body becomes warm. Warmed blood in the feet gets circulated up in the body carrying the warmth everywhere. I have experienced this. Sometimes when I feel too hot but it is still cold enough that I can't push away the blanket, I remove the socks. As soon as I remove them I notice a difference. The stuffiness is gone. I am not a medical professional but neck, underarms and feet are the spots where the blood flow is closest from skin and can be used to heat or cool the body quicker I suppose.
Its an interesting point. I am a medical professional, in fact a Podiatrist, but still trying to work this out!
Awesome video where you are giving it your all out in the snow at night, hyperdrive!
Cheers buddy. Snow is so rare here at the coast we go nuts!
Nice review and very helpful thank you
@Steves.Vlog832 Cheers Steve!
I tend to use my revolution race (another good value brand) soft shell most of the year round, just layering up underneath. If it is really grotty I throw my cheap decathlon windproof on underneath just to give a little more water resistance and trap in some more heat. Layering FTW.
I ordered the fire maple 2 days ago
@michaelbrunner6654 enjoy Michael!
As far as I can tell this a completely waterproof non-breathable material. That might be good for the military as a cheap and durable option for emergencies, but not the best to sleep in regularly because it traps all the condensed moisture from sweating. And especially sleeping in it for multiple nights without an opportunity to dry everything out the moisture would just accumulate. If you want something cheap (around 50 GBP) and robust military gear I would recommend the british army bivy that is made using gore tex, so it keeps you warmer and protects you from wind and rain but the moisture can still get out. And it's also possible to sleep with just the bivy and a poncho over your head as a pretty lightweight and versatile setup if you don't need a mosquito net.
Thanks again for the comprehensive comment. The Goretex bivi is a good suggestion, but it does not offer the same versatility as this.e.g walk and talk.
Like the look of this. I use a standard waterproof jacket as a shell; up on my recent camping video (which you watched, thank you!) I had to have this over my down jacket. I had saved the down for the tent in my dry bag but had to get it out to use in combination with the shell; I am always nervous of getting it wet with rain or sweat. This one looks good though
i have a rab bergen Event a classic hillwalking shell with a wired peak etc.like the pit vents on your fjern 👍 i know what you mean about cinching the hood around your face when beating the harsh winter elements i love it 👌
Reminds me of being a kid and having a snorkel parka. That was great in tge snow!
@Fellmandave1 god aye happy days 👌👍
Got two of those jackets in different colours. Great value. They come up small. Unfortunately I have an outdoor gear disorder so also have Paramo , goretex etc. Do you know my 15 year old Berghaus Meera peak still performs the best. Must be the old school coating. I do find the event softer! Good buy! 🎉
@jasonkelsey987 It's an affliction shared by many Jason. Aye those old mera peaks! Got to be red.
I got fjern down jacket sure was 85 ment be 250 which I can't see tbh,but it's great warm well made quality garment might try the shell looks heavy duty just got a keela munro for winter but another won't hurt 😂
Yes I really fancy the Fjern Arktis 2 down jacket. Yes another can't hurt! Unless you're a goose.
how would you compare this to the KUIU storm star? Great channel by the way.
Thanks. The Vern is heavier, slightly less wind stable, but massively more liveable.
I did not guess a tent test could be this good. Thank you. 🙂
Glad it was helpful!
Like the jacket but i like them a bit longer so when it rain u dont get ur tally wacker pissthroo
@garyvause2475 😆. Hahahaha! I think they make them that length to be 'harness' compatible. I get your point though, a long coat that covers your 'nethers' is right cosy.
A shell jacket is an obsolute necessity here in Canada for outdoors activities , all year long . I may use it alone or as an outer layer to cover a duvet or another intermediate layer. I have one from Arcteryx , with the classic 3 layers Goretex , And one from Showers pass , the Refuge jacket, using a material call Elite as a windproof and rainproof barrier. One or the other is alway's with me . Thanks !
Hi in Canada! I would always have one, too, but tends to be an LW job the rest of the year. We don't have the showers pass brand here. Thanks for commenting 🙂
I Never Remove pot stand from the SOTO WM, Always Leaving it connected, NO Need for me to remove it, same weight on or off, fold n roll into same size pouch, More importantly, it easily fits right into my compact cook set without issue + room to spare, the SOTO WM is superior when cooking with & supporting bigger heavier pots with its more substantial stand, its faster into action without having to unfold the fire maples pot stand. SOTO WM = Rock Solid Winner for our group👍👍
Brilliant, thanks for that Anthony, indeed , why remove?
I've noticed that the jerven bag with the 60g prima loft does collect a lot of condensation between the layers, even with allowing plenty of ventilation. However it does maintain heat still very well when damp. I have a tarp over head and then attached to a ridgeline underneath the tarp I have my jerven bag set up like a bivouac.

As an ex yomper I carry the food that I enjoy, don't give a toss about the weight. The freeze dried stuff is over priced flavoured saw dust. The wet foods with MRE bags cut down on the washing up😄
@@T5Zplayer well that was a no mucking about comment. Brilliant!
I'm defo gonna get one of these, perfect little head torch and I'm pretty much sold on Fenix now, they seem to make the best torches, got a few from them. For me 800lm is the minimum level I want, 400lm is manageable but obviously 1200lm is a Brucey Bonus - and 4 hrs at 1200lm!!! love the charging method, makes sense as you'll probably have 2 batteries, one using and one charging and with a 4 hr run time you could run continuously with 2 batteries and a decent power bank to charge from. Never want a swivel up feature - just turn it off and save ya battery! I wish more would state their run times online, Fenix always make it very clear what the runtime is for each brightness level, just been looking at olight and led lenser on Amazon/their websites and it's clearly a secret with them! Thanks Dave - Mike
You're welcome Mike. Enjoy the '62.
That is possible, just keep in mind that due to losses from both the power bank and then battery charging circuits you would only be able to really use maybe 70-75% of the power bank's capacity. So a 20000 mAh power bank would give you just a bit more than 4 batteries worth of power. Or if the batteries/power bank are colder it could get even worse. This means you will probably carry a bit more size and weight around versus just carrying more pre-charged batteries. Which may or may not matter to you.
Thoughtful Dave
Hi Andrew My daily question lol, I don't think I've asked you this before. What are your thoughts on inner tent material. I've bought a tent that I'm hoping will cover me for all 4 seasons. I wanted a tent mostly for three seasons but was strong enough to cover those unexpected windy days. Also if I wanted to go out in mid winter I could. So the design has everything you'd want re pole strength, outer fabric reaching tight to the floor (sides can be raised for hot weather) but... the inner is all mesh. I figured that wouldn't matter as I'll be well prepared clothing and sleep system wise. Ideally a mixture of solid and mesh I imagine is best but do you think a full mesh will be a deal breaker in winter. What are your thoughts on the inner fabric. Cheers
Andrew? Wrong channel. Anyway, none taken! Inner tent material. For winter, 100% solid all the way, with a double door with mesh or solid via zip tuning. Good compromise is scarp 1 with about 20% mesh at top. Depends on conditions, but I am getting on and feel the cold.
The price is a joke, come on its worth 30 -40 max. Much better cheaper versions out there.
Like.?
7:15 nothing to be worried about at all officer 😂
