As you say, nice for those mindful moments to relax and chill with the stove. Feet up moment. I got a Trangia, meths burner and pots, for the same reason, nice and quiet, light with a mag stick, turned out to be pretty efficient too 🙂 I like the shape too, and if you chose some straighter twigs 🙂topping up would be a breeze. The table looks very useful, better than a dish just laid on the ground. Oh, and happy new year when it comes.
@@rickterry8148 Thanks, Mate, wishing you peaceful brews.
alpkit do a similar rectangular one as well but i think the serotonin has extra accessories 🔥
Cheers buddy. The feed hole at the end is missing too.
@Fellmandave1 the feed hole is definitely a bonus.
How much does the titanium version weigh?
About 230g it's on their site.
I bought one and love it.
This is going back some!
@@Fellmandave1 yes, it is, but I live in the ass end of the world 🤣 SA so should be expected 😉
😄😄😄😄😄 ps, love the glasses. Not my usual audience.
Top tip: chop up the bacon into bite size bits and put them in the pot atop either stove: less to clean up, better control, no added oil or fat required to cook it, less chance of burning it too. Happy Christmas 👍🏻
Very good tip, but I did want to demo the griddle top. Happy new year!
Hi Dave I know you have a good relationship with the guys at Nortent, any chance you could get clarity on the crossing of the poles on the Vern series as there is a lot of chatter about whether pole bend is good and how do you keep that bend to a level where strength isn’t compromised and does the way you cross the pole increase or decrease this. Many Thanks
There is a fair bit of this on the Facebook NORTENT owners page. Any clarity there? It's not a problem I have had except on the Vern 2 with the first poles.
If you like that you’ll love the titanium Winnerwell backpacking stove, you can also buy a table that acts as a stand for it to keep it off the ground. It’s bigger than the Serotonin and when you’re not cooking it’s a mini fireplace, I cut down a small sheet of titanium to seal the top of mine so all the heat comes out of the fireplace portion.
Nice Paul!
Great intro to innovative kit. Thank you and happy new year to you, yours and all reading this.
Thanks, you too!
👍👍👍 .. an interesting variation on a theme. I like the little table and the folding legs idea under the stove to protect the surface below. When necessary, I put my Wood Burners into a Mess Tin / Similar, with some water therein to protect the underlying surface. I have the Bushbox LF in Stainless Steel and to date, it has given me good service. Old Years Eve, it's going to toast Marshmallows over Charcoal Briquettes on my flat balcony while I watch the Fireworks Display across the Rhine in Germany, drinking 'Glühwein and with the Malti-Poo under a blanket next to me 😊. New kit 🤔 .. 74 years under the bridge has taught me that the 'search for the ideal kit' is similar to that for the Holy Grail .. just out of reach .. always 😁. I'm at the stage now that what I now have 'will do'. Any perceived or actual 'shortcomings', as a 'Boomer' (YOB 1950) we know how to adapt 😏. Thanks for the share .. and an all of the best of the New Year to you too.
@thomasmusso1147 You are totally right on the 'new kit' Comment Thomas. Alas, I am accelerating on that journey, but I hope to bring something to first time buyers, who will use it for a long time. Enjoy your Gluwein, which you must be drinking out of a Grail, as you have found it!
@@Fellmandave1 👍 .. yes, my 'Grails' are two very old Insulated Mugs with Lids .. keep liquids nice and hot for a while 😁.
It does look like a nice small stove but I think that it would be a big improvement if it was bigger.
I agree Graeme. Hopefully, they will bring out a titanium one, double the size.
Nice one Dave, will it manage a turkey crown 😂😂 Happy new year to you & your family when it arrives.
Definitely enough for one if you do it in batches, tapas style.
I appreciate people who are good at tinkering and engineer clever gear. I’m going to look into this and see if it’s available in the states here.
@BackcountryExposure I hope the tariffs don't hit them too hard Devin! Happy New Year. May your tent pegs never pop, and your mat never deflate.
That looks nice and compact, strong too. You might have found yourself your next Soulu killer ;) Happy new years
@slowboilingleafs Hahaha. The joke that keeps giving. Happy new year to you, too!
It does :) I do enjoy watching your tent compare and review/walk trough videos. Got the sydvang one based on those and it has turned out exactly as expected.
I really admire people who have the creativity and energy to design and produce a better widget. Puts my decades old and filthy cone shaped wood burner to shame. Thanks, for sharing this, Dave. Honey looked to appreciate it as well.
@curtchaffee Ahh, but the memories in your filthy old one, Curt....

@@7volcast no problem!
Why do outdoors youtubers devote so much video time to cooking and eating?
What do you think the content should be? Cooking and eating is a big part of the outdoors conundrum!
@ there’s nothing challenging, impressive, visually stimulating, or interesting about eating outdoors. If you can’t find something more interesting to focus on when on a mountaintop in the middle of a storm, I recommend you devote some time to working it out. Try watching what others do.
@VintageClips-rf7kt thank you for your perspective and happy new year.
I see Chris has a pole in his hand and I wondered if this was some kind of safety back-up or even balance assistance? I love using my walking poles but perhaps need to learn to use them a bit less.
Yeah. The pole. I know he doesn't need it. Teaching tool and back up I would say.
Really like the high bath tub. Do you still rate this tent Dave? I noticed this vid is from 3years ago. Has there been any issues since and are you still using it? All the best - Jack👍🏼
Hi Jack. Yes I still have it. Irregular use due to too many choices and too littlevtime. No issues though, except broke a vent prop off packing. Cheers
This tent really can't be compared to a Hilleberg. It's better to evaluate it based on the weather conditions you plan to use it in. Many of the influencers who have praised this tent probably won't put it to the test in harsh conditions, or they might back out when things get tough.
@UhuruFrontier yes, but there are lots of different models of hilleberg. I don't think it is as strong as a soulo, single poled, but double pole is VERY strong. You will see that I now have used it on many a stormy night. Thanks for commenting, my friend.
@Fellmandave1 Absolutely. I purchased the Staika and will practice using it in January in preparation for my Africa trip. I'm also looking at getting the Niak in January. 🤤
Sounds like the tents should be the other way round! Enjoy your trips.
@@Fellmandave1 The high altitude and unpredictable weather in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa calls for a robust tent; hence, the Staika. 😁
I think all things considered - price, initial weight, water, fuel etc - the tinned meals are a winner. The only time that dried meals might win is when there is water at camp ... but if it needs filtering / boiling that adds weight to kit.
@@SteveSteele what about nutrition Steve. Any thoughts?
I've always found that I prefer the lowest light setting on a head torch for moving around my pitch at night. My Petzl actic core gives 6 lumens which lasts over 100 hours and I can easy read by it. I was pretty impressed with the 5 lumen run times of over 200 hours with your Fenix head torches. I think the price is a bit beyond my budget though! I would definitely consider the 62 if my Petzl gives up. Many thanks for the excellent comparison. Kind regards, Nick.
@@nagwood cheers Nick. Power is great but you also can't beat a bit of moonlight mode. Thanks for your thoughts. I hope santa brings you something cool.
Dave, hoping you can resolve my quandary! I have decided to branch out into more inclement weather so looking to pick up my first 4 season tent. I can't decide between the Soulo, Storm Star or Vern. Leaning more towards the Storm Star I think. Cost isn't a big driver. The main issue is I'm 6'3 so I think the Soulo would be too tight. I could go diagonal in the Storm Star. I love the design of the Vern but I feel the other two would hold up better in worse weather? What do you think mate? As always, thank you for all the content you get out there, it's inspiring!
@@baldandoutdoors tricky one. I have not found the vern wanting . Plus the longevity of the pu inner and pack size of the ss is an issue. If it is out and out storm weather go ss, for everything else go vern.
@@Fellmandave1 Cheers Dave, I hadn't really looked at the Vern all that much but I will now. What in your mind constitutes out and out storm weather? I don't think I'd be out in much over 45, 50 absolutely tops really.
@baldandoutdoors I reckon you'd be fine.
I just treated myself to a Vern 2 and tested on Dartmoor a couple of days ago in crazy winds and rain it was awesome, I couldn’t be happier with it, what a fantastic bit of kit. Thanks for all the videos mate, have a merry Xmas (that sticky toffee pud looked bang on!)

Nice one Dave. I’ve got the Led Lenser HR5. I got it from work. It’s the one our traffic management people use when they are working on the motorways at night. I can land a 747 with the light it gives off. 🤣
Nice one to get it from work. Best tell them you need a Nammatj 2, to be able to do your job effectively.
@ 🤣
I bought the HM65R-T following your group assessment a while ago. It has been doing me proud to date - comfy enough, lights up the way very well, lasts more than long enough for me so far. Thank you for the recommendation!
You're welcome buddy. My testing against these more recent models, still shows it a still a very strong performer. So Good choice and thanks for commenting.
It's a bit late now, but maybe worth adding that I think the Y peg might be the "wrong" way round in at least one of the tests. They are meant to be orientated with the single tip (bottom) of the Y towards the tent. Likewise with V pegs the (bottom) tip is meant to point at the tent. This is totally counter inuitive, and I've always done it wrong. But it is what the instructions say, and I've seen testing that shows it does make a difference. The same instructions and tests also suggest a much steeper insertion is best, only 10 degrees. Again not my intuition.
Thank you for adding! You are totally right. The biggest two factors I have learnt are substrate and peg length, all good stuff. Happy Christmas!
One of the downside to the kuiu ss is the bag it fits in its like a smartie tube .lol 🤣 not good when all you want to do is get out of the winds and rain fast but instead your wrestling with a bloody tent bag lol .i soon changed mine I'd rather change the bag and add a couple of ounces and be stress free lol 😂😂
@kinderkev I did that then swapped back. It is a nightmare.
