Tim’s Unspooled, Y & T, and Kansas books look fantastic.
Here in Ventura, CA we have a strong local music scene thankfully. For instance, a year or so ago we had a new venue open up, holds about 300ish people. They must have a connected promoter, the classic English punk band, Subhumans played there a few months back and tomorrow night I'm going to see Early Moods play there. Being in my mid 50's I agree with you, it's not the same as it was by any stretch. Hard Rock and Metal back in the 80's fueled a tremendous club scene here in So Cal. Really miss those days!
Yes! Timmy D.! 🎵”You down with Timmy D.? Yeahhh, you know me!?”🎵 Nice interview, Johnny G.! Tim is a swell guy and quite the knowledgeable cat. This weekend l make my fourth appearance on his channel. I was on two of his Kansas deep dive episodes and now I’ll be on two of his Sammy Hagar episodes as well. Tim’s Hagar book, Red On Black, is excellent! Highly recommended to learn about both his pre-Geffen period AND his later period, just like Tim said. A lot of fascinating information contained within his latest tome. Also recommended for hard rock and metal heads? Mr. Durling’s book on Y & T, called Down for the Count. Happy Holidays to you and your family, John! Cheers from The Frozen 🥶 Apple. 🍎 Rock Out, Prog On and Pogo! It’s my mantra 🕉️ and my logo, At the end of each one of my videos! Your clone and mine, ~ The Dreaded, Shredded and Unleaded Doppelgänger of Davey Cretin, from CRETIN CLASSICS. PS: I’ll be on Tim’s UA-cam channel, TIM’S VINYL CONFESSIONS, the weekend of 12/28/24 to discuss Sammy Hagar’s 1997 CD 💿 Marching to Mars! Thanks and we hope you enjoy it!
Very good discussion guys, thank you 👍🏻 I have almost wanted to re-listen to that solo Sammy Hagar album of 1987 which I have even on vinyl and "Balance", of course. Maybe I will do 🙂 It would be great if you showed album titles/covers while discussing them. Anyway, it is a nice episode. Happy New Year to you 🎉🙂
Most fans of live music are getting too old to go out. Younger people do not care too much about live music instead prefer EDM DJs
Dingbatz in Clifton NJ and Debonair in Teaneck NJ are two great small clubs in my area that are still going strong. Thankfully.
Great topic, John. All of our smaller clubs in my area (SE Wisconsin) are still doing well. No one is getting rich, but business is stable. A lot of owners are getting creative with ways to keep traffic coming through the doors, which seems to help. One club in particular will only cater to original music, and the scene has been very loyal and appreciative of this stance. --Mike
I don't think Ratt ever made a bad record, even the album before this one (Ratt-1999) is pretty decent.
Yes, Texas as a whole has been dealing with this for a while. It’s just too expensive for all involved. Consider yourself lucky to have experienced the way it used to be.
I have read that car parking charges at venues in USA are expensive, think Mr Alo said up to $50 to park your car then a walk 😢
So true John I find it sad that people won't pay a reasonable price for local venues yet pay $100s for huge bands. Here in UK same with theatres Opera etc no demand very sad 😢😢
Merry Christmas John to you and your family 🎉❤⛄️☃️☃️. Great video as always if it was a sad topic 🥲🥲🥲
These small clubs are now charging $25 or more for no name artists. They can all go out of business..
The crowbar in Tampa closing really hurts
I played on the local Dallas Fort Worth Alt Rock Scene in the 90’s .. turned 30 in 2000 went back to school got my degree a wife and had some kids few years later and now I am far removed from local scene but I do check out clubs showings here and there and some of the same local clubs have been around since the 90’s ( Trees since 1990 and Club DaDa since 1986) .. but I don’t know about any upcoming clubs that come and go , no idea.. my kids don’t appreciate live music they can’t get past the imperfections of live music .. but there is some hope, my daughter does love Smashing Pumpkins, RadioHead, The Smiths and Jeff Buckley 😊
Yes not just in the USA there has been a trend of smaller entertainment venues such as pubs,, bars, clubs closing up in the UK - particularly from around 2015 to now.
Not so much now. I live in pinellas county and we went through a rash of smaller venues closing around 2013-2020. Most of them closed because of either the rent being jacked up to the point where they can't make money (most of the venues on Central Ave in St.Pete) or just not being able to compete with say The Brass Mug or Crowbar.
The market is shrinking and it seems like any given area can't really have more than one or two venues that appeal to the same demographic, there just aren't enough people to support multiple venues of the same style.
A regular goth series with this panel would be awesome.
We had a great discussion that I saved for another episode. I'm not sure there's enough interest in this topic though, I've done a few goth themed shows in the past and they don't do very well, but I do enjoy that music and lifestyle so maybe I'll do some anyways...:)
Merry Christmas !
Merry Christmas!
What headphones did you end up buying?
None actually....haha, I stuck with what I have. I'm a big fan of Koss headphones, they are not that expensive but punch way way above their weight. I have the KSC75 and for wireless the KSC35. I also have a pair of Audio Technica headphones.
@@LairoftheAlchemist I've had Koss in the past myself. Right now I have a pair of JBL that I love. Like you, I can't stand buds in my ears so I'll only use over the ear headphones. I also have a pair of Audio Technica but I bought wireless without realizing my amp is not wireless. I bought a little add on for the stereo that supposedly would allow me to use wireless headphones but I couldn't make it work so I gave up. Now they're gathering dust in a drawer.
@@russdavies9686 I'll have to check out the JBLs
Certainly Anvil. Saw them a few months back and there were only 30-40 people. Great show by the way. The Tubes should have been bigger, I think, as well. Great live band.
I've always thought if Anvil had a better singer they could have gone farther.
Alot of Politics comes into play as well especially some of the major labels, promoters etc, running a theatre and being a promoter you learn how nasty politics in the music world can be sometimes.
For sure.
Merry Christmas. I do UA-cam music and the stats are all wrong. I'm guessing it doesn't count when you play music from downloads or playlists. Anyway, glad I found your community this year. You guys ROCK!
Thanks and you may be right, I don't know if plays from playlists count.
Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, Black Sabbath....Elvis Costello?? 🤔🤔🤔 LOL
Why not? The Attractions were a great band, that rhythm section kicked ass, live!
I know, haha...I really dig his bass player Bruce Thomas and just got into a thing that month listening to a lot of his albums.
I can definitely guess that none of those songs is by Babymetal. How did they get so famous? Merry Christmas to you and your family, John.
Merry Christmas and yeah, Babymetal....that's a headscratcher, although I have theories.
I saw that show too bro! Here in San Diego.
Nice

As a metal guy who also likes goth, curious if you plan an episode on the new (within last 2 mos.) Tribulation album. It’s quite good. More goth than metal, but still pretty heavy in spots.
That's a good idea, thanks. I do like that band.
Don't waste your money on that album, get Nilsson Schmilsson instead.
Never heard of them
Started with Chrysalis, ended up on Metal Blade. For us Saint fans out here, we feel that all of their music is stellar.
Their 83 E.P was on Metal Blade but you're right, they went to Chrysalis for their first full length.
I'm thinking UFO, Uriah Heep, Mahogany Rush, Pat Travers Band. They all made it to a certain extent but should have been bigger. I can throw Nazareth in as well.
Good choices
Lost Weekend. Dumb auto correct. Lol. Wouldn't let me edit.
Armored Saint is my third favorite band of all time only ranking after Judas Priest and Dio. I agree with you on most of your points except where you say they don't have the songs. Go back and listen to the debut. Every song is catchy with a memorable chorus. Go listen to Symbol of Salvation arguably their best album with amazing songwriting. Go listen to Aftermath from Delirious Nomad to see how they can write epics or Isolation off Raising Fear. Joey Vera is such an underrated amazing bass player. John Bush has one of the most powerful voices in metal. Another thing is that they STILL WRITE amazing records. Go listen to all their latest output especially Win hands Down and you'll see what I mean. They are consistent. No bad albums. No sell outs. Armored Saint also is incredible live. I've seen them many times. I saw them with WASP and they blew them off the stage in my opinion and quite a few other people who I know agreed. I like WASP but Armored Saint is such a superior live band.
That's cool that you are such a big fan of the band, I think I remember you mentioning this in other comments. I do really like them but for some reason there's just something missing for me, but everyone likes different things so I'm glad your a fan.
There are definitely a lot of bands in that category, where I like them, but they never quite had that magic to pull them across to the big side... Raven, Riot, Circus of Power, etc. But what about bands like Blue Oyster Cult? They had one massive hit and another pretty big hit, but were somehow still relegated to smaller venues or larger venues as a double bill or supporting act. At least here in the states all of these bands should have been bigger: Thin Lizzy, UFO and Saxon. Also, why hasn't Megadeth been as big as Metallica? Well, it's the songs. Even as thrashy as Master of Puppets is there is a certain power to it and catchiness that Megadeth never had. But I am sure marketing has helped Metallica along the way as well.
That's a good question about BOC, I'd have to think about that, I mean realistically they have 3 pretty strong radio hits, Reaper, Burnin and Godzilla that get played a lot, so why don't they play bigger venues? Last time I saw them was outside of a sports bar in St. Petersburg Florida.
@ I forgot about Godzilla. Was that really a single? I knew it was kind of a staple of album oriented rock back in the day. Last time I saw them was that a little venue next to Gillette Stadium. Bigger than a sports bar, but really more suited for a local acts.
@@esteeb67 Not sure if it was a single but it gets a lot of play on classic rock radio.
Hi Lair. How about Savatage. I know they had Hall of The Mountain King on MTV but i do not know if they were that big IMO. They changed their music style a little when Paul O'Neill came into the band. Not Glam and Not Thrash. Maybe in between. What do you think. Thanks
Savatage is a good one...I would guess like you said it's because they changed styles.
Zebra
For sure.
The Crue came along then the Guitar player passed then Badlands then John turned traitor on the band.
I could have had another category called "Bad Luck"...members leaving or dying, in fighting...etc.
I think a big part of it comes down to the record label that a band is on. Do they like the band they signed? Do they understand the band? Are the band a part of a scene? Are they promoting the band? Are they using their clout to push the band? Do they have their staff working the album? Are there in-store displays promoting a new release in the record stores? Are they offering tour support? Radio promotion? Video support? Obviously, this whole philosophy was much more prevalent in the 70s, 80s and 90s. It’s a whole new world out there now! Cool show, John. I think you might enjoy a series I’ve done with Peter Kerr over on Rock Daydream Nation. We’ve done two episodes so far - and just filmed a third - on how certain record labels didn’t properly support specific artists. We touch on metal, hard rock and classic rock bands, too. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Your pal and mine, ~ Davey Cretin, from Cretin Classics.
I'll check out that episode Davey, thanks for the comment!
Unfortunately Dave Prichard’s death didn’t help Saint’s momentum they had in the late 80s. Also Chrysalis was not a great label for Metal. Maybe a better label and better marketing could have “delivered.”
Marketing and luck are major factors . Bands like April Wine and the mighty Y&T and British bands Magnum and Marillion should have been mega considering their music was pure magic IMO . Then you have tone deaf artists like Bob Dylan and Iggy Pop make the big time ..... go figure ?
I think Dylan falls into that "timing" thing...he came around during the folk era and was part of the counter culture movement.
@@LairoftheAlchemist ... and the fact that a lot of people were stoned out of their minds to notice ... ... cheers John.
@@rocketrod1444 True!
Metal Church Savatage
Armored Saint is a tremendously GREAT live band. I saw them several times. 1st time was in Portland like 2,000 seat venue opening for Metallica's 'Master of Puppets' tour.
Nice!
If I had to make a list of 'desert island albums', Symbol of Salvation would be on the list. I think John Bush left after that album though to join Anthrax, which likely killed any momentum a tour would have given them. I give every album at least a 7.5 out of 10, but never having an anthem song has hurt them. Even if you see them live, no one goes to see them saying 'oh I can't wait to hear ....'. Too bad. Still one of my faves though. Two others I would add to the bands already mentioned are Trouble and Savatage.
I think the issue with AS was 2 things 1) Record label and management. They were on a major before most but their label refused to let them tour Europe. The band wanted to go and the label didn't want them to. Meanwhile Metallica were making a name for themselves touring all over Europe. 2) Metal trends. By the mid 80s the only genres of metal anyone cared about were Thrash and Glam metal. A lot of the traditional heavy metal/NWOBHM bands started to fall out of favor. Every metalhead I knew was split into either the thrash or glam camps. No one cared about Armored Saint, Grim Reaper, Raven, Anvil, etc anymore. And a lot of the traditional Heavy Metal bands like Judas Priest, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Ozzy had gone full glam by 86.
Agree 100 percent about Cinderella!
was into Armored Saint!!! as a teen in High School, wore March of the Saint album out!!
