Ponderings Of Pete

Приєднався 29 жов 2020
I'm Pete and as everyone else here on Booktube, I love me some books. In my real life, I'm an accountant, so I use books to spice up my life since accounting is... accounting (no, I won't do your taxes. I'm not that type of accountant).
I read mostly sci-fi and fantasy (heavier on Fantasy currently, but working on delving deeper into Sci-fi)
I really enjoy Brandon Sanderson specifically and am working on developing an encyclopedic knowledge of the Cosmere (slowly surely, and unintentionally).
I love to discuss books, so hit me up in the comments or if you see me around the Booktube Discord community!

Worldbuilding: My Thoughts and Enjoyments
Did you read the short story after the mercy of gods?
@@sw3dge-Trevor got most of the way through it but I never finished
@ interesting. I was riveted!
I'm with you in being selective with my reads and liberal with my DNFs so I have a high average rating
@@KFoxtheGreat I don’t even DNF that much which is the funny thing
@PonderingsOfPete I didn't this year, which I feel like is a sign I'm getting better. Then again, checking on GR I've DNFed 11 books in my life, 8 of them in 2020 so maybe I'm not as bad as I thought 😅
@ it’s the Booktube influence of 2020 that really threw you for the loop
"I'm on a Le Guin high" the best kind of high 😂
Why didn't I know this happened? Oh no!!!
@@mastersal4644 I didn’t promote it too well and YT probably decided you dissent need to know. All hail the algorithm!
@@PonderingsOfPete And here I was wondering when you're talk about the convention. With pictures and all. Guess I missed it - now catching up on replay
Go to Seattle and you could recreate scenes from The Last of Us Part II
Missed my opportunity to do the first one in SLC, so I guess that’s my goal now
Thank you so much for having me and for putting up with my messy rambles! 😅 This was a lot of fun!
Do you think it’s fine to just read the first two and consider it Kuni’s arc. A lot of the characters I cared for aren’t going to be in book 3 and I want to move to something else. Also was so underwhelmed by Thera leaving Dara at the end of book 2
@@lawrencelimb1 dang I’m so sad. If that’s what you want, sure, but I think following all his kids and giving yourself a chance to care for Dara, care for these other wonderful characters is worth a shot. The story as a whole is wonderful and Jia’s story in particular is really interesting tot all to people about
READ LIVESUITS. I read it in one sitting. Completely changed the framing of the whole series.
I *just* got off of work, but popping by the recording to say hiiiiii!
Not sure I agree with every placement BUT I can respect the list. Reapers gale is one I go back and forth with, there are sections of that book where it’s the best of the series and then there are other sections where it’s the worst. So I always rank it middle of the road for that reason but that’s just me.
Pete, that was great!
@@adamborst thanks Adam!
i enjoyed this sm
Such a great series that needs more attention. I’m glad you loved it!
@@PonderingsOfPete yes yes yes
Juniper was such an interesting setting in Shadows Linger that it managed to be my favorite book in the entire series. Port of Shadows almost dethroned it, though.
That’s an interesting take. I’ve heard a lot of people bash Port of Shadows, so this might motivate me to get to it once I finish the other ones
*loud beard scratching*
Most fantasy books will never be considered classics outside of their genre. This book will probably escape.
It is a real thing to NEVER ever ever leave keys in a car. Unless you are with them. But we all had to learn this the hard way. Good recovery.
Way to push through Peter. Technology can be tough some days. Ask the airlines.
Did I skip ahead and cheer aloud at your #1 choice? Of course I did. Watching for real now.
"Lords of Uncreation has yet to be read...*Anitha*" 😂
Knowing that Allen would be mad about Perdido Street's communism also makes me want to read it, lol
man, you had a day Pete, you gotta get your keys straight lol
@@BookishDrummer now they will be lol
Never understood how something could be someones favorite series, yet they don't like half the books. I would classify that as a series fail. Even if half of the books are the best fantasy ever. Great books in it, perhaps, but as a series, nope. I really wish he had condensed it to a 4 or 5 book series with more focus and following a core group of characters specifically. Then I am certain it would be the best series ever. Just my take. But I really enjoyed your take on them all. I am starting Bonehunters next. Looking forward to it.
I mean, that's a stylistic choice, what you're saying. It would've made the series completely different, nowhere near as expansive. there's so much we wouldn't be able to experience if he had gone the typical fantasy route. If you do that, then you take a lot of what makes Malazan what it is. Not sure it would be on the same level then. Maybe I'll have a different opinion after reading The God is Not Willing, which I've heard is tighter writing
Not the Tetris I was expecting. This is better! Similar to me having to unpack my books from boxes and find a way to fit them on the one shelf lol. I think James SA Corey did a Han Solo book, no joke.
@@sw3dge they did! Honor among Thieves. I think it’s somewhere but I haven’t picked it up yet
I hope your dad doesn’t hear. 👂 we gotta surprise him
Yay 1000 celebration. Remember you be painting. lol. Keep up the good work
Great video! Also the ability for the sus-Father to read Gavalar’s thoughts. That was only alluded to but it clearly happened multiple times.
Bro don't spoil the books You gave away a big plot while talking about house of chains
@@vinodvagadurgi414 it’s been so long since I made this video. What did I spoil?
@@PonderingsOfPete you gave away the sister death
I am having a great time reading malazan
Hey Pete! Just found your channel... Just want to say I love your vibe and discussion on this book.
Thanks!
Thanks for having me on! This was fun :)
This was such an enriching discussion! Can’t wait to read Lords of Uncreation now.
I missed this live - how could you Pete!!
Apologies, but my hand slipped on the live button and they all just happened to be there 😭
I was intrigued by the title alone; then, a book haul I was watching mere moments ago captivated me with his synopsis of it. But you mentioning that the lead protagonist is Autistic has caused my interests in this book burn even stronger. Not a lot of books, shows, movies or other depict "special needs people" in positive ways in today's society
I’m not autistic but I thought it was a fantastic portrayal. Well worth the read.
@@PonderingsOfPete I'm not Autistic either but I DID grow up with some slight learning disabilities since I was a baby. So, stuff like this always appeals to me; especially if it's connected with fantasy stories
Thank you!!! Eons ago, when TBB announced their Shadows of the Apt editions I looked into the series and decided to purchase them. Months went by and I’ve been accumulating them but not quite recalled why. Now I remember!! The series sounds amazing. Empire in Black & Gold is going onto my June TBR. Again, thank you!
Amazing! Happy to be of service! I really hope you enjoy them as much as I have.
Excited to have you back!
Omg my favourite author also plays my favourite TTRPGs. And all the casual info on upcoming releases! How exciting!
Pippin spends his time in Gondor with a regular guardsman. It's how we get to see the people of the white city and their fears. Tolkien was raised by a single mother, orphaned as a young teen, and worked to be one a professor...never read this dudes books and dont plan to now...comrade.
Excellent job Pete! Love how Adrian just casually drops like five things coming out this year and then he's like "oh yeah btw theres also some novellas, idk man, when I know, you'll know" and that's after talking about three other books coming out in 2026 💀
Thanks! The number of things this man has whirling around in his head is ginormous
What an excellent conversation. It is wonderful to hear Tchaikovsky discuss his entire oeuvre and there are so many gems - his ideas, his worldbuilding approach and his humility. Loved the little hints about upcoming works. Kudos to you as an interviewer for keeping the conversation flowing so well, transitioning between topics organically and just letting Tchaikovsky shine. Many congratulations, thank you for this interview and here's to many more. 🥳🙏🏽
Thanks! I appreciate it
Pete this was a stupendous chat-it’s so different watching an author interview when the interviewee is both a huge fan but also so well versed in the full range of the author’s works. And you uncovered an Elder Race follow up let’s gooooooooo
thanks, my man, this warms my heart, gotta uncover all the things he's writing, so we get some warning
Fantastic interview!
Thanks!
Wow, so great to see this on my UA-cam feed. Watching now with keen interest. I am interested in Tchaikovsky's ideas and in particular, his thoughts on his recent novel Alien Clay.
Sadly I wasn’t able to talk about Alien Clay that much as I hadn’t formulated too many questions on it yet. I only finished it last night.
What you asked is awesome. Maybe another time? :yay: 🥳
So excited to see this interview! Peter races about Adrian!
oh awesome! definitely gonna watch this!
Wellcome back! I am so happy whenever some shares their love for "The Dandelion Dynasty" and Ken Liu. Jia Matiza is one of the most comple character I ever read.
These books are so amazing man. Master Pieces. Wall of Storms can't be described in words.
Everyone read these books. These books are beyond amazing.
Absolutely amazing series. Im actually ALSO right on the middle of book #6
Nice! I’ve since finished the series and it got amazing for me. How’re you liking the Sea Watch?
@PonderingsOfPete Oh my gosh, so great. These books are written so well. He does such a great job of switching back and forth between the characters... It's almost what makes want to finish the book! Like, where are we going next?! 🤣
@@miguelmatallanes5953 lots of places. You’re going lots of places 😂 Glad you’re enjoying it. Always great when there’s more of us out there
@PonderingsOfPete HOLY. MOLY...... You weren't kidding!! I will avoid spoilers for the UA-cam fam.... I am just a couple chapters into part 2. 🤟
Your name is Pete? No way 😮 Jokes aside I am curious about this series. I didn’t love children of time but I did like dogs of war so I am mixed on this authors work.
lol actually my name is Harold. Of course. Children of time is radically different from this. This man has so many different flavors of work he needs to open his own ice cream book shop. I have yet to read Dog of War yet so I can’t say what it’s super similar to in terms of his body of work, but anything is more character focused than Children of Time, so if it’s that, then this series and something like Guns of the Dawn might appeal to you
I love the legal pad for notes, very real and organic feel to the video. I've seen the love on Allen's discord, but haven't made a bump in my TBR. You have moved the needle!
Thanks adam, moving the needle is all I can hope for!
Just started my re-read of Empire of Black & Gold. I'm trying to keep my series in progress as low as possible (tbf two of those series are re-reads, so loophole i guess) but i couldn't help myself 😅
Good one to break you’re rule for 😂 I’ve been tempted since Evie and a few other having been thinking about reading these starting sometime this year
Amazing intro! You’re doing the man the bug the legend proud by getting the word out about this series. Right with you on loving the different arcs, and seeing him grow as a writer with bk 5 and beyond .
Gotta spread the word as much as possible! Took me like ten different tries with that intro, so I appreciate it
