SURF PERCHING! Oregon Coast Surf Perch fishing using one of the easiest riggings; CRAPPIE RIGS.
Janina and I hit the surf near Florence Oregon during our annual summer camping trip. I had forgotten my leader material, therefore I had to resort to my backups; Eagle Claw CRAPPIE RIGS. Even though they only give you 2 hooks, we didn't seem to notice a reduction in bites. I DEMONSTRATE THE RIGGING at the beginning of the video.

STEELHEAD BEAD HOOKS - THE BEST BEAD HOOKS - BLOODRUN SKEENA SIZING CHANGE LEADER KNOT & STORAGE
Ha! We were just discussing this and guess what came in my feed 🥴🤣!
@@toniradloff6445 your devices listen to you! 😄
Omg I do the same thing even the way I tie egg loop, the only difference is I use blood run tail out 😊
I have tried both, good hooks, but I generally use Skeenas for beads. The Tail outs are pretty stout, they’d make good drift fishing hooks too.
@ will definitely try the Skeena then! I also received the same leader case this past week! Love it!
@ pip’s boxes are pretty slick! I have more of them than I’d like to admit to. 😄
I find tiiping the boat on it's side and grabbing frame near oar lock, lifting with knees, is much easier on back. I am 70. You can also see where you are walking better. No offense. This method probably works better for lifting into truck bed. I use trailer with rollers for hauling around. Good luck
This works for me, but thanks for adding to the discussion. This video has a lot of viewership so suggestions can be helpful for some.
Amazing video. I'd say you're perfectly fine with the 4lb. Cxx is extremely underrated, their 4lb is closer to 8lb breaking strength. I think the main thing was the barbless and probably UL rod. Either way, looked like a ton of fun!
@@alex111683 thank you Alex! I agree on the CXX being strong for size, but I was using CX which is a finer diameter line designed for spinning reels. Its great line, doesn’t have much memory like CXX. That rod surprisingly has a lot of power for a UL, but I think you’re right on the barbless hooks. But that’s okay, I’d rather them pop off the hook with barbless than cause any undue damage with barbs when I’m not looking to keep them. That would have been quite a meal though! 😁 Thank you for the feedback though! I will be back in 2025, that lake is incredible.
Do you think the Celilo salmon and steelhead rod is good? What do you think is the best all round rod thats not too expensive?
I don’t have any experience with the Celilo. My recommendation for a decent budget level is this rod, the Compre. Another option is the Lamiglas X11. I’ve been using an Okuma SST for Surf Perch and am not a fan, they are heavy and feel clunky. I most likely will be selling them or using them for loaners. I have some Okuma Guide Selects for Salmon trolling, they seem like good rods. I think it’s ‘get what you pay for.’ If a Celilo is what you can afford, give it a shot. Good luck. 🎣
@ Thanks man
I just picked up the GoPro Hero 13 Black. Im lovin it!
Glad to hear, I’ll be adding one to my lineup, waiting to see what Black Friday sales GoPro will have. Last year I got the 12 for $299 with 2 batteries. Hopefully they do the same for 13, but I will have one going into winter steelhead season.
@@RAGEFISHING Yep. Well i havent upgraded my GoPro since 2018. I had the old Hero 2018 and upgraded to the Hero 13 Black. Im still usin the Hero 2018 though.
I buy the new one every year, I don’t make a ton on advertising money, but it goes to new equipment. You’ll see a huge difference in 6 years of technology!
Wonderful!! Thank you!!
Glad it helped! It’s a cool system to keep it off the floor.
Awesome area man. What’s the grids on it. I’m a veteran and the water and fishing are my therapy. I recently moved to Eugene. Fish on and tight lines dude! Love to fish with ya someday. Love the content.
Thank you! Eugene is a great centralized location for fishing: 2 close by rivers, coastal rivers, the ocean is close, lots of lakes. That spot on the McKenzie is upriver of Vida, but the great thing about that river is there is plenty of access, just look for pull outs / parks / boat landing access and you’ll find fish. Make sure to check the fishing regs for current rules. And I hear you on the fishing therapy! Thank you for your service. 🙏🏼
How heavy was the body of that PenTac #4.5 blade on which you caught that steelhead? The current seemed fairly strong.
I just weighed the 4.5 Pen-Tac as I was fishing it. It weighed .478 oz., so just shy of a half ounce. I also weighed a Pen-Tac 4, it weighed .421 oz., so a little heavier than a 3/8 oz. lure. And yes, the current is fairly strong right there.
Used the rod: feels light and well balanced, but the tip is definitely a little too soft with lures.
For my taste as well, I’m used to fishing lures with a faster tip rod. The quality and weight of the rod feels good otherwise, for the money.
Absolutely: nice rod for the money, and it works very well with floats + 1/8 oz jigs too. I still have to catch a migratory fish , on any rod 😅, but the Compre feels like the right tool for steelhead on small to medium sized tributaries. It maxes out with a Flying-C 5/8 oz , not so much with casting but more with the retrieve - though it is still doable if in a bind - but does very well with 3/8 to 1/2 oz lures. And it seems to have a fairly good amount of reserve power in the blank. Definitely a good buy for the stated purpose and context. 👍
Where do you get these hooks from? I can’t find them anywhere. Also careful with those plastic bags and rust!
I buy the Gamakatsu Siwash hooks at Bi-Mart stores most of the time. They have sizes as small as 8’s. I ordered some 10’s from Fishfield.com for some tiny panther martins. I added some links for Amazon, but they are kind of spendy. I generally pay between 3-4 bucks for a small pack. And about rust, I should have said not to store them in the plastic bags unless new or completely dry. That goes for any storage for wet lures. I open my small tackle boxes after fishing trips to ensure they dry out. Thanks for the reminder. 🎣
I just found your page and watched part 1&2 of your series. I know this is a two year old video, but I appreciate you for doing these! I just picked up a hero 8 for a fishing trip in Bali next week. First time GoPro user and this answered a lot of questions I couldn’t find on google or Reddit. Going to do a trial run on my local river to get the reps in. Thanks! On to video 3 now!
Thank you for taking the time to comment, you’ll like part 3! I should have done these in reverse order. I have some newer GoPro reviews with some tips as well and I plan to buy the new 13 soon. The hero 8 is a great camera! I still use mine, it was the first camera I had with the newer image stabilization, which is a must have! Let me know if you have any questions: you can also find me at Rage Fishing on Facebook and @steelheadrage on IG. Good luck!
@@RAGEFISHING All three videos had good content and definitely helped get me ready for my first GoPro adventure. I’ll be sure to give you a follow on social media. Thanks again!
@virgilhainsey8873 I’m glad they were a help, I was mainly pointing out the other socials so you could message me with questions, but I appreciate the follow as well!
Both of my okuma convector reels are trash. Idk, what happened to the okuma quality.
@@BigRick2Trays Yeah, both of mine failed in a few hours of use, that’s unacceptable. I get if one had a flaw. The Daiwa’s I bought are still holding up well. The Okuma Cold Waters are doing okay for now, but time will tell.
@@RAGEFISHING Diawa Lexa 100, is what i use for trout and walleye. Happy fishing.
What rod and reel are you using?
Cabela’s Tourney Trail 9’ Heavy steelhead rods with shimano sienna reels. I think the rods have been discontinued, which is too bad, we really like them.
@@RAGEFISHING Thanks! My wife and I just got a travel trailer. I can't pull my boat when we use that so I am looking to expand my shore fishing adventures. :)
Good thinking. That’s a great thing about the coast, year long surf perch fishing!
That's my fav river. It's minutes from my place. No hatchery program but retention of steelhead(wild)and Chinook(wild) permitted: one a day,not to exceed 5 per annum
It’s a beautiful river, one of the most perfect steelhead streams I’ve fished. You’re lucky to live so close! I hope to get back this season and when it’s a little lower. 🎣
Im thinking to take my wife for some fishing tomorrow at mckenzie river we are from eugene any good spots you recommend us for trout fishing? We are kind of new on thins thankyou
The McKenzie River above Leaburg Dam is heavily stocked. You can fish at Leaburg Lake, fish the highway side near the overhanging trees. Or, any place there is a pull out along the river will have fish.
This is why I prefer telescopic rods they are so much more simple to pack away.
Thanks for handling the fish well and fishing single barbless, not barbed treble.
I do my best, especially when I plan to catch and release. Thanks for the feedback. 🎣
You must be up there with Bill Dance and Jimmy Houston to call that an entry level. Lol
@@OMG-sh9st X11’s are their inexpensive rod line, not to be confused with their American Made rods. I fish G.Loomis rods for steelhead, but not everybody wants to spend that kind of money on a rod and all Loomis rods are made in the USA, so their cost reflects the fact. When I get questions about a decent rod that’s budget friendly, I generally recommend the X11 and as of recently, the Shimano Compre.
Quick question. You ever fish at Rocky Ford creek? Just want to know what fly you would recommend for winter trout in that area
@@OMG-sh9st I haven’t, and I don’t do much fly fishing. So I’m a bad source for that info. 😁
How are you gonna call Lamiglass an entry level rod
@@OMG-sh9st I consider the X11 an entry level rod. I’ve bought them as gifts for my kids that are getting started in steelheading. They are made over seas to Lamiglas specs, not to be confused with American made Lamiglas rods which are definitely not entry level rods, starting at about 3 times the cost. One of my first steelhead rods was a Certified Pro X96LS, an incredible American made rod which has battled many a steelhead and keeps on going. Hopefully that answers your question, the title isn’t intended to trash talk them or I wouldn’t recommend them. 🎣
@RAGEFISHING of course no trash talking. Thanks for the response. I've been a Lamiglas fan for quite some time and i think theyre awesome INO. I recently bought a Okuma SST for this year, and so far so good. Steelhead is underway on the snake at the moment. Good luck and Fish On!
Good luck! I’m in between hunting seasons, so I’m taking a short break from fishing, but I’m getting ready for my 4th annual ‘Steelhead December’ series where I will be releasing new fishing videos every Friday at 6PM and gear / tip videos in between. I’ve got some awesome unseen footage from the tail end of last winter steelhead season, we caught some fighters!
@@RAGEFISHING awesome. I will be subscribing to your channel and looking forward to some great footage!
Very helpful. Just mounted my new reel. Thank you
@@sunshine467sun glad it helped!
Can't see the fish terrible camera angle.
Maybe I should hire a camera crew. 🤣 I agree, I thought my chest cam was covering the fish, but in the heat of the moment, I was more worried about the fish. The tripod camera didn’t show anything, you live and learn as a small UA-camr.
I was looking at getting the e6x 9'6" 6-12 casting as a good float rod for both steelhead and coho salmon. Do you think it would be too light of a rod to use for some coho and pinks?
@@adamnoga-styron7882 absolutely! But act fast, because they have definitely discontinued the E6X steelhead rods. 😭 Looks like they have replaced them with the GCX, which appears to be an awesome rod. I bought one of the GCX Lite rods for trout a few months back and it’s incredible. I plan to buy a GCX steelhead rod and do a gear review this coming season.
I used to deliver to Sunriver and black butte. There were huge caterpillars everywhere.
@@larrykoroush6995 makes sense; lots of butterflies in the summer months.
I've been up past leaburg using spinners with no luck. I have the same eggs but was unsure of the setup. I just wanted a couple of good pan size. Thanks
Fish the highway side of leaburg by the trees. Let the spinners get deep and barely spin the blades. You should catch some.
Where did you launch your boat, there in Reedsport?? That didn't look like Salmon harbor.
It was! Salmon Harbor
What wader bag are you using. If you use one. I’ve been doing some research. Fishpond seems to make a really nice one.
I don’t use one, well not really. I have a Cabela’s duffle bag I use to carry them, but during the season I’m fishing so often I have them hung up to dry most of the time. Are you looking for a bag for storage or transport?
Kinda both. I don’t know that I would fish quite as often as you do. But maybe once a month. The rivers I want to fish are about 3 hrs from me.
Step up to edge rods. Gary sold gloomis to Shimano long ago. After the no compete clause expired north fork composites/edge was born.
I’m guessing Edge rods are nice, I have friends that use them and like them. I’m a G. Loomis fan, Gary can be credited for starting the company, but their engineers continue to produce awesome rods still made in Woodland, Washington.
@@RAGEFISHING in fact gloomis and edge rods are made in neighboring building. Shimano bought gloomis and yes some rods are cutting edge but they cheapened manufacturing overall. Gary worked for Shimano on contract, then after the no compete clause, North fork composites started up. (Edge). I know this because i spent half my childhood with their family and continue as an adult with my family.
You should like do a walk thru of the new boat. Awesome video learned a lot.
Thanks for the tip, I’ll have to do that once I get it all done.
Your videos are awesome. How’s your tennis/steehead elbow? I’ve been struggling here in Coos Bay with steelhead elbow pain since December. Had a steroid injection once which relieved pain for only two months. Any tips would be much appreciated if yours is feeling better. Thank you.
Thank you! As for the tennis elbow, it’s still there. I’ve had physical therapy, a MRI and several meetings with a surgeon. He thinks it will go away so was reluctant to do a surgery which would really set me back. I wish I had better news. I’ve had it before a couple times and it went away on its own. I’m now on about 10 months with no relief. I tried the cortisone shot, it helped for a few weeks, but came right back. I’m taking a little break from fishing, maybe that will help. I’m in my hunting seasons and will be off the grid for a bit in Idaho. Hopefully it goes away before winter steelhead season.
Thank you very much for replying. It’s the most frustrating injury in my 53 years on this planet. First felt the misery after tossing #5 spinners all day up Dellwood aka south fork last December. Hope yours feels better soon. Dr. Holrich at Slocum did a great job fixing my grade 3 ac separation. Not sure if he can help with steelhead elbow. Might be worth a try. If we’re both able to slay steelhead this season and your in Coos Bay, I would be more than happy to show you some of my favorite holes. Thanks again for your feedback and informative UA-cam content. Learned a lot from you.
That is the best place to clean fish. So convenient. Been there many times.
Easier to walk to Hobbit Beach from Washburne
There are definitely better ways to get there but Janina and I enjoy the hike from Heceta Beach, it’s good exercise and has some beautiful views.
Guess I’m late to the party. Beautiful boat!
@@dwaindiffey6145 thank you! My goal before next Spring Chinook season is to add some type of autopilot; either to my kicker or a front trolling motor.
New subscriber and follower. Really enjoying the videos I’ve watched so far. With some of those rods being discontinued. What would you recommend if you were starting over today. And some of those rods aren’t available.
Thank you! Appreciate the feedback! Well 2 things; 1. Craigslist or marketplace for some used E6X’s, they are great rods even though discontinued. 😭 2. Do what I’m doing and research the new GCX models. They are slightly different in model number. The GCX 1141 is a 9’6” Medium Light, so similar specs to the E6X 1143 and the GCX 1143 is a medium heavy, similar to the 1145 E6X. They cost more. 😑 $350 MSRP, however, watch for companies like Fish-Field to have a 15% off coupon sale, which would get you under $300 with free shipping. I am planning on buying one or two to review this coming winter steelhead season, and the new Vanford A Shimano spinning reel. I recently reviewed a GCX lite for trout fishing. It is the most incredible trout rod I own. So I’m hopeful the steelhead rods will be equally awesome. 🎣
Thank you very much for the reply. I will look into those rods. The GCX 1143 I can’t find. Your videos have inspired me to try wader river fishing again. I’ve never really had much luck with it. Combat fishing is the normal here in Washington. And that’s just not interesting.
@dwaindiffey6145 here’s the link to the GCX 1143 www.gloomis.com/products/gcx-steelhead-spinning I love wade fishing, but I avoid combat fishing at all costs. I mostly fish wild runs because most of the combat fishing in Oregon is on the popular hatchery runs. It’s nice to keep a fish, but I’m just as happy releasing a wild while fishing solo for miles.
Thank you for the help and advice. You might be the easiest person to talk to on UA-cam. You and Hawkin fishing need to get together and make the Rage fishing starter pack. I just found them and spent money thanks to you 😂.
@@dwaindiffey6145 I share the gear I believe in, Hawken products have been a huge part of my success in steelheading. Thanks again for the feedback, I aim to make people successful by sharing what I know. 🎣
Red Fin Surf Perch are the best eating fish of all in my book.
@@michaelmurphy3546 we normally take a cooler to take some back to camp for fish tacos. I won’t forget it next time. 😉
I have a major question about the new loomis spinning rod gcx 10’ MH 8-17
What’s that? I haven’t had the opportunity to see them yet. Sounds like the float model, I think it would be an awesome bead rod for large rivers with those specs.
@@RAGEFISHING well that pretty much sums it up for me! Although I fish the clackamas/sandy as well as some tributaries on the Oregon coast would that rod work well floating 1/2 weight and bobber ?? 1/4/ - 1/8 jigs and 12mm-16mm soft beads ???
Definitely, I’ve moved up in power for my bead fishing. The 8-17 is the better way to go. The 6-12 is good all around, but for beads I stick with 8-17, MH.
@@RAGEFISHING thank you so much this rod will be used only for winter steelhead. And you should definitely do. A review in this rod once you lay your hands on one
@@ChrisRodriguez-c5u I’m working on it now, researching the new models. And of course Shimano came out with the Vanford A. 😫 So I’ll have to try one of those out too. GCX and a Vanford A for Winter Steelhead 2025! 🎣
Go get em you guys! Keep having fun!
Fun day on the beach!
@@pnwexcso2939 always a fun day fishing the beach!
I'm a fly fisherman and I can cast a long way for fly fishing. Would that be a feasible way to target surf perch? Or is the range needed just not very achievable on a fly rod?
It’s very achievable! I haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve heard of it done! I wish I had more info. Like you can see in this video, I was having bites right in front of me. 15-20 feet out. Anyone else tried it? Feel free to chime in. 🎣
We call that grip a split grip. Also if someone wanted that rod and didn’t want to buy a vanford due to the price, check out the miravel.
Thanks Jacob, one of the Loomis guys posted that as well regarding the split grip, I added the term in the full East Lake video. I’m a huge fan of the Vanford, I have them on most of my steelhead rods, but I plan to do a review of the Miravel. Even though slightly heavier, I know not many people want to spend $250 on a spinning reel and it would be a good choice for a bit over $100 bucks. Thanks for your input. 🎣
@@jacobzirkle9153 also, check out the Backcountry Trout Part 2 video, I hooked some monsters on this rod. Even though it’s rated Ultralight, it proved to have the backbone for bigger fish. It’s like a micro steelhead rod.
@@RAGEFISHINGI will. Keep it up.
Nothing works better then live sand dabs or kelp worm and a 6-8 mil orange and yellow corky above the hook💯 It also means that you gotta get your lazy ass out there at low tide and get your bait💯
I have no doubt they would work great, that’s the only way I’ve caught them in the bay. The gulp worms just make it quick and they stay on, especially for novice fishermen like my wife. 😉
Oops. I thought you meant shrimp, now I see you must have meant sand crabs. I’ve tried them, just hard to keep them on the hook. Next time I’ll try some magic thread.
@@RAGEFISHING if you hook a sand dab right then you'll never have a problem. Run the hook tail to head and run it up the shank just past the eye. You're 6-8 mill korky should be pegged a finger and one half just above the hook so that the hook can swing. I use this method on the rocks, jetty and surf. I promise you that your catch rate will go up tremendously.💯
@@Viper_Poker I’ll give it a try, thanks for the tip!
@@RAGEFISHING I see guys on UA-cam and at the beaches that I fish. They got these 12'+ rods and heavy weights. I just shake my head and chuckle to myself. I use a two piece 6' trout rod and 8-12 lb test when I do this. The most weight that im throwing is one ounce. Im fishing in the churn 6-20' out depending on the hole. Its the churn that brings up your sand flees and sand dabs and your kelp work that these fish are targeting. You don't have to be 30 yards out anchored in the surf. By letting your gear move around in the churn. It then becomes a more natural presentation. Im never going to be a look at me kind of person so you will never see me on UA-cam. That said ... I don't mind sharing knowledge. If its bright and sunny use Orange and yellow corky's ... If its overcast use chartreuse it will glow brighter. You'll also find that the less gear that you have to pack with opens up so many more exploration and discovery opportunities.💯
Ive only tried surf fishing 3 times. In Newport. Everytime ive had a few bites but never got anything to stick except for one baby striped bass on my last trip. I notice you guys arent really casting all that far. I think i was overthinking where the fish would be cause i use an 11' medium weight surf rod with 3oz of weight and probably casting 100 yards out 🤣 maybe i should downsize my gear and learn to read water better cause the fish seem to be a little closer to shore than i think lol. Great video man.
Try working the right slowly all the way into the beach. When you hook up, guesstamate how for our it was and work that distance. The fish will move in and out, north and south all day.
@markoda2120 see that's kind of what I've done I've started closer and kept casting further and noticed I get bit at all distances just seemed to get bit more way out. But after watching some of these videos I know I'm casting way further than most just need to keep getting out there to figure them out a little better. Thanks for the advice.
Thank you! Mark has some great advice in this thread. When I got started, I read J.D. Richey’s surf perch book, tons of good info, especially on reading surf. He also has an awesome video on here, his channel is ‘FishwithJD’. Janina and I just move until we find the bite. We move more than featured in the videos because I have to edit them down. Look for steeper beaches, like this one we found. I was getting bites right in front of me. Good luck! They are a blast. 🎣
You caught a stripper by Newport?
I fish up in Oceanside a decent amount. Typically they are only out 20 to 30 yards out, sometimes even closer. I use the Hi/Low rig with good results every time I go but I also keep moving if no bites within 5 minutes or so.
