  • Johnny Risko joined me for a day of steelheading in January when most rivers were still blown out. We fished high in the system to find the first steelhead hookup of 2024. Make sure to stick around for the outtakes (bloopers), we had a bunch of them!

    Seems like every time I make the long drive to the Oregon coast to fish winter steelhead the rivers are blown out and flowing with mud from heavy rain. A fellow could drown from the rainfall just rolling the window down near the Trask or Nehalem. I’ve even seen fish standing on fence posts trying to catch their breath.
    So, it is nice to sit here and couch surf in John Day …. I’ll be content to watch you fish while daydreaming about steelhead fishing next winter 2024/2025 (Lord willing).
    Thank you for the excellent content, Tom

      🤣🤣 One of the best comments in Rage Fishing history. Glad you enjoyed us goofballs trying to find some winter fish in that deluge. You have to be half mad to be Winter Steelheader.

      I do some sketchy stuff while steelhead fishing. 🤣 I was punished immediately after by losing the whole rig.

    Hey there, I like the videos! By the way, my last video, I gave you a shout out when I was showing the viewers, the net system that you put up on one of your recent videos. Yes, I jumped on the bandwagon and tried it out, and I love it

      OMG, fantastic blooper reel! I was laughing so hard my face hurt! 🤣 Nice to nail a fish right out of the gate. Hey, you tried to let John catch it!😅 It sure was pouring there for awhile! Holy smokes, you are almost to 4K Subs! Awesome! I see Brian at Automagic Adventures has added your net set up to his gear. Thanks for another stellar video!

    Another great video Barry! Fishing small coastal streams can be a blast and can deliver really good fishing. They can be challenging to negotiate however with a lot of wading and bush wacking, but well worth the effort. The blooper outtakes were hilarious. Been there and done that.🤣

      Thanks Corby! That’s a great river. I usually don’t have many screw ups, but this day was packed with them, so it was perfect for an outtakes reel. 😁

    Is the tail damage on that fish from escaping a bite by a predator like a bigger fish or a seal....or is it worn down from brushing ou gravel beds for spawning?

    • @RAGEFISHING
      @RAGEFISHING  6 місяців тому

      I’m not sure, but my guess is a seal. I’ve handled 100’s of steelhead and I’ve never seen that, so I doubt it’s from creating beds. Plus, this was a male and I believe the females make the beds for their eggs. Occasionally I catch steelhead that have significant wounds like this one, most likely from seals or other predators.

    Thanks for the video! So, skeena vs tail out?? Who`s the winner for bead under bobber? I`ve been experimenting multiple hooks and want your opinion between the two.

    • @RAGEFISHING
      @RAGEFISHING  6 місяців тому +1

      I’m still trying the tailouts but the last fish I landed was on a Skeena. It was a hot fish too! I’m a few weeks out from releasing that video. The tailouts are heavier and seem to be sized about one off from the Skeenas, as in slightly larger. I’m still on the side of the Skeenas if I have to choose one. I also bought some of the new Gamakatsu bead hooks to try out, they are more than twice the cost though! And as many bead hooks as I lose, cost is an issue. My reason for liking the Skeena is how light they are for the size. I don’t want the weight / size of the hook to affect the natural drift of my bead. Stay tuned, I’m always tinkering. 😁

    • @KK-vh9bl
      @KK-vh9bl 6 місяців тому

      @@RAGEFISHING Thanks man, great info! I`d been using the Gamakatsu wide gap for the past couple of years but been noticing size 2 and up bends most of the time. So, quit using them and been experimenting Gama bead hook, Gama TGW octopus and Addicted advantage bead hook this season, and so far TGW is ahead of the game. I will definitely buy the skeena and tailout in various sizes. I will probably buy the net as well. Thanks again and looking forward to the new video!!

    Are you still bobber dogging that bead down those drifts with a regular slip float?

    • @RAGEFISHING
      @RAGEFISHING  6 місяців тому +1

      I use an AF-5 or 6 slip float and a Dave’s stick weight. I want the stick weight tapping the bottom causing the float to tip over, top pointing downstream. I wouldn’t call this a true bobber dog, where the float is acting like a tugboat dragging a weight a little slower downstream.

    • @Snowbellys
      @Snowbellys 6 місяців тому

      @@RAGEFISHING you wouldn’t fish a jig this way, though correct …,

    • @RAGEFISHING
      @RAGEFISHING  6 місяців тому

      @@Snowbellys nope, you don’t want a jig hitting bottom, it should be suspended at the fish’s eye level or slightly above.
