I wish we had more time, Janina was so excited to catch the first one, she kind of forgot she wasn’t wearing her usual waders and the waves came over her hiking shoes. Not a good way to start on a cool May 3rd morning on the Oregon coast. She was a trooper and stayed a bit longer, but with that rain and over 2 miles to go, our trip was cut short. We’ll be back!
great video barry love watching u guys fish together and that was a cool hike to the beach ive actually never been to that beach before even though i grew up on the coast! i really need to learn to fish for surf perch its a fish ive never caught when i grew up fishing the coast we always fished the jettys or bay
Thank you, they are a fun species to target. They bite so aggressively, but they are either on or they’re off. Like my bites just didn’t get the hook point, maybe they were just little ones. However, we should have started 2 hours before high tide and we would have done much better.
Hell yeah buddy awesome, I also believe you can catch perch on just about any beach as well! I carry sand shrimp and razor clam with me, I used to use those worms but got out fished by everyone not using them during our perch meetups! Also bonus catches are nice too they seem to come on sand shrimp ( what fish doesn’t eat that) just use magic thread it will hold the bait on. I’m sure you already knew that 🤣 anywho nice video man! 🤘 never fished there
Great video Barry. I have never fished for surf perch off the beach. My dad and I would fish off the rocks at Yachats, but I haven’t done that in years. When you and Janina camp at the coast are you camping at Honeyman or Washburne? My wife and I really like Washburne. A lot smaller and more quiet than Honeyman.
Thanks Corby! We actually stay at Harbor Vista, it’s a Lane County park. We have to drive to our surf fishing spots, but plenty of them around Florence.
Oh man, you’re a tough one to get a like outta. 😁 I’m a First Lite guy, but do have a few Sitka pieces for their quick drying qualities. That piece is the Core Hoody. And yeah, surf perch is open year round.
Another fun adventure, thanks for having us along! I might try that same hike this weekend
It’s pretty awesome. And a good work out! I try to stay in ‘backpacking’ shape all year, so hikes like that with a lot of elevation are helpful.
Janina, Queen of Hobbitt Beach, and Queen of Surf Perch!
Yep! She always finds them. 🎣😊
That looks amazing! It’s not often you get a beach to yourself.

Great video, the wife and I want to take that hike, Had no idea it was there.
Thank you Ray! It’s a great hike, not quite as muddy in the summer. The views are incredible.
That was a nice trail and a nice beach too
It’s a good work out too!

I was gonna like this video until I saw you're wearing a Sitka jacket, then got outfished by the lady 😂 Is surf perch open year round in Oregon?

Oh, and Janina always outfishes me. 😊
Easier to walk to Hobbit Beach from Washburne
There are definitely better ways to get there but Janina and I enjoy the hike from Heceta Beach, it’s good exercise and has some beautiful views.
