How to Repair a Roof Nail Pop (Easy Hack!) Using Roof Sealant / Tar
DIYNate shares a quick video on how he uses roof sealant (Black Jack, Henry’s, Liquid Nails, DAP, Roofer’s Choice, Flex Seal, or other roof wet patch products) to fix a water leak when a nail has pierced a shingle on roofs of his rental property and water is coming in from the holes (this is a quick DIY fix vs. the full 'right way' to fix and fully ensure the shingle looks good from the outside when done).

In this video, DIYNate shares his approach to using a roof seal product to solve a water intrusion issue (leak) coming from the roof down the beam on the inside of the roof and coming theough the ceiling. He uses roof leak sealant / patch that is in a caulk / tube style format.
The steps include:
1. Identify that you have a leak from a nail pop (nail that has come up from the roof decking) and has broken through the shingle.
2. Confirm this is the problem spot where water is coming in (sometimes, just because one nail appears to be the problem, there may be other nearby trouble spots where water is coming in.
3. Determine which approach to use (pull out the old nail or poind in the nail or put a new nail in its place) and deal with thr nail.
4. Clean the area around the nail and underneath and around the hole (we are cleaning the area to make sure the roof sealer / tar will adhere to the underlying shingle)
5. Cut open the sealant tube (caulk style tube) and pierce the seal on the inside (or use an existing tube by repiercing the seal - that is what DIYNate does in this video - uses the final dregs of a roofing sealant tube which is great since this is just a very small job for sealant / tar.
6. Put the tube into a caulk gun and squeeze to activate the sealant / tar and apply around the area and directly into and over the hole and underneath the shingle where both shingles overlap.
7. Use a flat blade to smooth and smear the sealant / tar around the area and making sure to not create major bumps or uneven spaces that would cause water to enter. Note, the more care you take with this step thr less noticeable your work will be. DIYNate didnt soend too much time making his shingle repair look pretty since it was on the back of the house and it was a hot day.
8. Apply pressure for a period of tome (check the sealant label for soecifics; smooth remaing / excess sealant / tar.
9. Deal with your interior water issues after confirming the sealant has solved the problem.
Note that some roofs have warranties that may have exclusions around homeowner’s making repairs / this type of repair so be aware of that - but this will likely solve your problem (DIYNate assumes no liability).
Good luck - hope this repair works well for you! Nothing like dealing with a leaking roof to disrupt your life, but... it has to get better from there!

    So, there is no hexagonal port on the bottom of my garbage disposal to manually spin the propeller. So, I am under the assumption that most garbage disposals have this mechanism to spin the propeller manually, but some do not, and I just happen to be one of those fortunate souls whose garbage disposal lacks such functionality.

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate День тому

      Rats - well - you may have a reset button on your disposal or may want to check a brand name and see if it has a process for manually spinning the blade when it gets unstuck. Good luck and would love to hear how you get it fixed when you are able to figure it out. Good luck! - DIYNate

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate 2 дні тому

      Has been a while since I created the video but I believe the red tab needs to be pulled back / disengaged to get the bulb free, then put back in position when the new bulb is in to ‘lock’ or secure the bulb in place. Thanks for the comment - appreciate you watching! - DIYNate

    Awesome video. I marked the water lines with sharpie so I could keep track of how far to re-insert lines into new solenoid. It would be helpful to see tabs on covers so I could see how they snap in.

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate 2 дні тому

      Good call on showing the tabs a bit better. I think I put a link in the description to a guy who shows that a bit better than what I show in my video, but good call there. If I had it to do over, I would call that out because it is a bit temperamental getting those tabs to release. Also, great call on marking the water lines with sharpie to make sure it goes in far enough. Better than taking chances and having the water line come loose and create a leak! Good thoughts and appreciate the comment! - DIYNate

    Nate, getting slack on the cord to remove the socket is the part I needed to see. How did you get it far enough out from the lamp that you could undo the wires?

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate 2 дні тому

      Great question - I believe on the bottom of the floor lamp there is also a nut that secures the wire length and if you loosen that, you can get some additional length / slack. Hope you were able to figure out - different floor lamps have different setups but my guess is getting slack to work with can be done from the base. Thanks for your comment, DIYNate

    I agree the instructions were definitely dubious and at 83. They seem ridiculous. Now I do notice on my panel I don’t have those three switches info reset. How do I get past that? I looked in the manual and it gives me two options that have to do with having the air conditioner on when I put the air conditioner on nothing really happens it doesn’t give me the option to change the time at all sorry for this long comment but if you can clear this up for me, that would really help. If not, I’ll try to drive backwards in time and see withthat does. Ha!

      Hey @Ogothechef - not sure how how much help I will be on this issue but what year is your sienna? Mine is 2011, so that may account for some of the differences on the clock reset. That said, it does seem like if you are in air conditioning mode, you may be off. Feel free to send me an email with your contact info (name / phone number) and I’d be happy to give you a call to try and troubleshoot. If you can email me at info@diynate.com, I’ll get back with you and we can see if we can get it fixed. Best, DIYNate

    This video has 208,000 views. How? I'm going to start making UA-cam videos on how to do simple things that are literally written in the instructions. Even if you don't have the instructions just Google

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate 24 дні тому

      Haha - well, 200k views is surprising to me as well. But, I know I prefer to google something and then watch a video on how to fix it. To your point, simple instructions to fix, but I think a lot of us never use the user manual and when we have to troubleshoot, we don’t remember where the manual is (even if it was covered in the manual). Content that helps fix everyday problems does seem to be popular on UA-cam - the more people run into the issue, the more views you get. I guess a lot of people have been looking for this solve. I was certainly surprised with the fix myself when I made the video. Appreciate the comment and thanks for watching either way! - DIYNate

    I did mine today it's a tiny one but I had a fat hunk of ice in it let it melt for a moment and just poked at the ice GENTLY!!!! and it came off. Imma do that the next time that happens again or if it's getting humid again.

    Mine is brand new, right out of the box, but it will not stick to the dash at all. It will stick to the window though.

    • @gothard5
      @gothard5 Місяць тому

      I had no idea there was a latch thing right above the suction cup. There was no mention of that in the user manual at all.

    • @gothard5
      @gothard5 Місяць тому

      I tried the latch thing and that did absolutely nothing. Still no stick or suction at all. Am I doing this wrong?

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate Місяць тому

      Hi there - so if it stuck on the window but not on the dash, it is possible your dash may have some raised texture that causes a suction cup to not hold on. You could apply a sticky pas to the dashboard and then put the suction cup on that flat surface and it should hold. Some slight bumps on the dashboard can cause it not to adhere. You could try the suction cup on other surfaces as well to determine if the issue is the dashboard or the suction cup. Good luck! - DIYNate

      Hey Alexandra - I am going to shamelessly plug two of my other videos for you here. What are the two buttons to reset the ice maker? Mine is a whirlpool side by side with ice button, light, lock, and filter reset. Thanks so much! I just subscribed!

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate Місяць тому

      Hi there - Not sure about your particular model, but on my Maytag French door side by side, the ice maker can be turned off by holding temp and fast cool (two middle buttons) for three seconds. Then, to turn back on, hold those two buttons again for 3 seconds. Not a true reset but sometimes something like that to retrigger the action on the ice maker may help. Kind of like unplugging your fridge then plugging back in. Likely not a true fix but may unstick something if the system needs a bit of a change. Good luck and hope this helps! - DIYNate

    My garbage disposal keeps getting jammed. So i use the allen wrench at the bottom and get it "loose". then it works fine for a day or two then gets jammed again. I looked inside and i cant see anything that is stuck inside. why does it get jammed after i loosen it up? i keep going back and for with this thing. If there was something stuck in it, you would think that it would NEVER loosen but it does, then jams up again in a day or two......what is going on????????????

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate Місяць тому

      Hmmm - tough one there. So you are getting your blade stuck on a regular basis, right? Not just your drain filling up? If drain filling up, I would try the plunger or disconnect the PVC hookups and make sure the pipes downstream are clean. If the blade is getting stuck on a regular basis, it could be what is getting put down there or possible may have warped from getting jammed / caught on stuff, but seems like it wouldn’t run in that case. My guess is the part that spins the blade may have gotten bent or there may still be something trapped up under there that frees up but not all the way, then gets ‘re-stuck’ after a few days of use. Good luck - sounds like you may be getting close to replacement or take apart zone but haven’t gone that far from my end. Hope this helps! - DIYNate

    If your car dashboard surface is rough then first stick some duck tape or something like this to smoother the surface.After that you install the mobile holder.... I'm using this hack and the holder stick so well on dashboard....try it..

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate Місяць тому

      Love that idea - the rough surface dashboard certainly creates challenges for these sticky surface pads, but using something like duct tape or another adhesive to create a flat surface for the phone mount to adhere to makes a ton of sense. Great suggestion and awesome add to the comments! Best, DIYNate

    So, it would be helpful to show how to disconnect the pipes and show us the third step please

    • @DIYNate
      @DIYNate Місяць тому

      For sure - I have a video in the pipeline (pun intended) to show the disconnect process with a bathroom sink (P-trap) - essentially the same concept with unscrewing the PVC nut, making sure the rubber/plastic gasket is in place, clearing out the PVC, then re-securing and making sure there are no drips. Love the feedback and suggestion for future comment to help viewers out! Appreciate your comment and stay tuned! - DIYNate
