8 DAILY TASKS FOR SUMMER GARDEN ABUNDANCE
Having a good garden requires a lot of maintenance. Walking around looking for insects and insect damage is essential in order to treat the infestation early before it becomes a huge problem. Also, keeping up with the trellis plants requires constant monitoring so the plants don't fall or break off the trellis. Watering and fertilizing are critical to getting the best crops. Weeding needs to be done to keep the garden in order. Finally, if you are going on vacation, leaving the garden unattended for 5 to 7 days or more will usually end in disaster for your garden.

HOW TO DOUBLE TOMATO AND CUCUMBER CROPS - UPDATE WITH NEW TIPS #garden
Переглядів 7 тис.14 годин тому
I recently did videos on how to double yields or more on tomato and cucumber plants with a few simple tricks and a trellis. I put links to those videos of the plants seen in this video on end screens of this video. I thought viewers would like to see how these plants have progressed since those videos, and also I updated what needs to be done now to continue to increase yields on those crops.
PART 4 - HOW TO TURN 1 #SWEETPOTATO INTO 100 - Vine Maintenance Now
Переглядів 521День тому
You have endless new sweetpotato slips once you have planted some in your garden. I also show how I treat the vines to keep the potatoes in the ground growing larger. In this video, I harvest 25 more slips and show how I quickly root them and plant them. All these plants came from just 1 sweetpotato. Now the 1 sweet potato has 68 new hills of sweet potatoes that I will harvest from.

HOW TO HAND POLLINATE SQUASH, ZUCCHINI, AND PUMPKINS TO INCREASE YIELDS
Переглядів 22014 днів тому
If your squash, zucchini, or pumpkins bloom but don't make mature fruits, then there may not be enough bees in the area to pollinate them. It only takes a few seconds to hand pollinate them, so you need to visit your garden in the early morning to accomplish this task. This is also necessary if you are growing under insect nets, or in a greenhouse.
DOUBLE YOUR TOMATO CROP WITH THESE TIPS AND TRICKS
Переглядів 15 тис.21 день тому
I started these tomato plants from seeds, and transplanted them into the garden about 3 1/2 weeks ago. Now they are thriving in the 85 degree weather we are having. I have a method of growing them that will usually give 2 or 3 times the yield of just tying them up and pruning the suckers and leaves. Here is a link to the video where you can see how I planted them into the garden. ua-cam.com/vid...
6 COMMON MISTAKES THAT RUIN YOUR #GARDEN
Переглядів 1,2 тис.28 днів тому
There are some mistakes that I see over and over again when I visit other gardens. Some people will ask me to come look at their plants and tell them why they are turning yellow or not growing or fruiting. I even made one of these mistakes this year with my strawberries. So maybe if I point them out, even us experienced gardeners can remember not to make these mistakes.

HOW TO PLANT MAY CUCUMBERS FOR 100'S OF 12 - 14 INCH FRUITS

I plant under a trellis so the vines can climb, and along the way I will show in future videos a couple of tips and tricks that will increase the yield. Watching the video where you training the tomato’s for the trellis you would snip off the leaves under the sucker because it was not needed. Should I continue to remove these leaves after the new suckers form as the plant gets larger? My tomatoes are chest high and are growing in large homemade cages. I’m concerned they will get so matted together it may restrict air flow if I don’t think it a bit. I’m definitely going to try these on a trellis as you have done next year. Great videos! They have been a tremendous help to me!

      It sounds like you are doing it right. I try to leave a lot of upper leaves to shade the tomatoes so I won't need the shade cloth. But you should trim any leaves that are getting matted, as that's not allowing air flow, as you stated. It also will allow bugs to hide easier. Thanks for watching.

      I had to put up a 7 foot fence to keep the deer out of my back yard. Otherwise you could spray some hot pepper sauce diluted in water that might stop some critters from eating. If it's bugs, then Sevin spray or liquid. Good luck.

    • @TheBackGardenYard
      @TheBackGardenYard 2 дні тому

      Yes, if you are starting slips now, I'd put the starter pot under a tree so that it's only getting filtered light until the slips appear. I use bagged cow manure and 10 10 10 in the rows where I plant the slips, and only fertilize once during the growing season afterwards with 10 10 10 again. Usually in late June. Ii may be a little late to start sweet potatoes from a whole potato now for most parts of the country, but you still get nice leaves and leaf steams you can eat, but full sized potatoes... maybe not.

      Probably the indoor temp was not warm enough. 80 degrees is the ideal sweet potato starting temp, imo. A "seed starting pad" would probably be needed next year. I would go ahead and plant the whole potato with slips into the spot you want to grow potatoes, fertilize with a sprinkle of 10 10 10 or similar fertilizer, and harvest whatever slips you can in about 2 weeks and plant. Sorry to hear about your slow starting... Thanks for watching.

    This is great information! I am in the stages of learning how to garden. I have tried to grow cucumbers a few times in the past but not too much luck. Next time I attempt to grow them I will keep in mind the technique of toping the plant to encourage growth in other areas. Thank you.

      Good idea. Just try to let the initial vine get about 6 feet before you top it, as it still may produce more cucumbers than the runners. But sometime the runners out produce the main vine 2 or 3 to 1, you just never know... Thanks for watching.

      Absolutely you can use tap water. If it has been chlorinated though, let it sit out in a pan for 24 hours or more to allow the chlorine to evaporate, or boil it for 15 minutes, and let the cool for a few hours before soaking. Thanks for watching.

    Do you do this also when there's a lot of females flowers?

    • @TheBackGardenYard
      @TheBackGardenYard 13 днів тому

      Yes - The main vine will usually quit producing when it gets over 12 feet long on a trellis, but if I can get 4 suckers to run up 6 feet in addition to the main vine up 6 feet, then I get 30 feet of producing cucumber vines. So I always prune the tops when they reach the top of the trellis.

    Hi there, wonderful advice much appreciated. I love gardening, its been such a healing therapy for me, I do 80% perennial fruit and 20% vegetable with low maintenance method low water. It's such an abundant harvest to. This tip for tomatoes may be helpful , once plants are about 6 inch high , load 4 inch thick green grass clippings all around every tomatoe plant , keeps soil warm, moist, retaining water and beautiful nitrogen dump. Just be sure your grass is not treated or sprayed

      I did try grass clippings one time for mulch. They seemed to interact with the compost and manure I was using and I got a big moldy fungi growth. The tomato plants did ok though, but I haven't tried it since. But I always say, whatever works for you, works! Glad to hear you enjoy the garden, and I agree it's therapeutic...

    Love your channel. Do you hand pollinate these cucumbers too or let them naturally pollinate?

    • @TheBackGardenYard
      @TheBackGardenYard 13 днів тому

      Sometimes I will hand pollinate the cucumbers, but this year I have an abundance of male flowers and I see a few bees visiting them, so I'm letting the bees do it for me. Unlike the squash and zucchini, where the flowers are not as obvious, and the bees are not working them, I'm still hand pollinating squash and zucchini, and pumpkin squash. Thanks for the comment.

    I'm not a mulch or woodchip person, would bury in branch pile. Think it's instinctive; what's living in there? what are they breeding ?

      The squash bugs chew up the squash and cucumber leaves and anything else they can find. The cucumber beetles, look very similar to the stinkbugs and they will kill your plants by laying orange eggs on them, and then the nymphs and mature beetles suck the juice out of the stems and fruits, and inject a bacteria which kills the plants. I've found that a bit of sevin under the mulch will usually do the trick.

    Seven dust! You know that when it rains the seven dust will be taken up in liquid form into the plant!

      It's really not a problem. I use as little as possible, but it's something I've used for 30 years, and I'm still alive and well. It's either treat the insects with something or lose the crop. I've tried the dish soap spray, but it only kills the ones you see. Those that come crawling in at night still wear you out. Thanks for watching.
