  • Walmart has some great deals on bare root Strawberries, Flowers, Fruit Shrubs, and many other items in their Garden Center, so I made a video. Here is the link.. • 2024 WALMART Garden Ce... - One of the items is 10 strawberry plants for $3.24 - so I bought 40 and made a video on what is in the package, and how I transplanted them, waited a week, and show you the results.

    every time I purchase a bag of strawberry roots they look dead. never seen one with green. I always fall for the scam, but very few people make it work, somehow.

      I went back to Walmart and they are still selling out of the same display. I looked into the bags and the roots now look mostly dead. I think for bare roots, you need to buy em close to when they first arrive... Thanks for the comment.

    I bought 20 of the June bearing All Stars from there about a week and a half ago and they are all doing great. I actually found 23 in total out of the two packs but those last 3 were very small and I planted them any way. They are not doing as good as the others. If I can keep them and get them into the ground, I'll be able to get more from the runners. Thinking about buying a pack of the everbearing too.

      That's my results also - the All Stars have 8 survivors so far and the Quinaults only have 14 survivors so far. But still, to get 22 plants for $10 still seems like a good deal. Thanks for the comment.

    Are they supposed to be brown? 😮 All of mine in the package were dark brown. Your roots look wonderful, nothing like the ones I got from Walmart.

      If you bought them recently, then they are dead. Walmart will continue to sell their prepackaged plants even if they are dead.Take them back for a refund. I will only buy bare root plants from a big box store the first few weeks they are offered for sale. They really should care enough to check and ensure they are selling live plants, but they don't. I saw a lot of dead plants being offered for sale recently at the store I bought these from. Sorry for your experience.

    I have tried with Walmart plants with 90% failed. Waste of money and time. Bought from Gurneys with 95% success. So the extra cost was worth it for time spent as plants have lasted for three years and able to grow more off them without buying more.

      You only want to buy Walmart and probably Lowes and Home Depot also, plants right as they are put out for sale, as they don't get any water or light in those bags, and yes, they will die in the bags.

    Are you able to do an update video for the strawberries that survived and are thriving if any?

      I am planning to do a short once a week to show progress in the garden starting in May. I'll be sure to show the strawberries. I think I ended up with 18 plants that are in the ground and doing well. Still hope to eat Strawberries from them this year. Thanks for watching.

    Did you plant all everbearing? I need to pull out some old plants 8 years old, they've made a lot of babies but no berries in a good long while! Not a high % but I may still get a pack. I hate paying shipping if I don't have to

      I got 30 everbearing Quinaults, and 10 June Bearing Allstar plants. I have found that if you will dig up the "babies" - retransplant just like a new plant, they will produce just like the ones you buy. Only fertilize once, about a week or two after transplanting with something like 10 - 10 - 10 - The reason I had to let the last patch I had go, was that the wild strawberries that aren't edible, invaded the patch and made such a mess, I plowed the whole thing under... This year I'll have a plowed border around the strawberry patch! Everbearing strawberries are not everbearing in GA either. They suffer in the summer heat, and sometimes will recover and make a small crop in the fall.

      @@TheBackGardenYard I dig cup sized holes in the ground where the runners are wanting to set roots fill my pot with dirt and use a bent wire to make sure they stay put til they root. Then snip them off and rehome them in a better spot.

    Is it true if you buy regular strawberries from the store to eat, you can dove the strawberries and grow them?

    • @TheBackGardenYard
      @TheBackGardenYard  2 місяці тому

      I've seen videos of folks growing strawberries from seeds on their bought strawberries, but I've never tried it. I don't think you would get a harvest the first year like you do with the plants.

    I have a question I heard that you're not supposed to bury the crown is that true?

    • @TheBackGardenYard
      @TheBackGardenYard  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes, I like to fill the container with enough soil to cover the bottom good, then add soil around the root mass just up to the top of the crown, but not over it, as that is where the leaves will appear.

    What brand 10 10 10 do you use

      I usually use the house brand, buy it at Walmart or Lowes. I haven't seen much difference in the results by buying the brand names many years ago.
