  • Growing sweet potatoes is not as daunting a task as it seems. In Part 1 of this video series, I showed how to soak and root a whole sweet potato, then to plant the rooted pieces in order to grow out larger plants. In this video, I show 2 different ways to cut the new plants "slips" from the rooted pieces in order to obtain at least 35 slips for planting into the #garden. I want 35 slips as I am estimating a harvest of at least 3 sweet potatoes per slip, and I want to get at least 100 sweet potatoes from this original sweet potato. In part 3, I will prepare the spaces for planting and show how to put the slips in the ground. Thanks for watching, and like and subscribe to get notified when part 3 is released.

    For 2 years I just threw whole sweet potatoes in a container and got a few sweet potatoes. This year I’m following your way. I’ve buried 3 of them in a pot, and they have sprouted. I’m in west central Florida. I feel I should have started a little earlier, but let’s see what happens. Thanks for your easy to follow and understand videos.

      You are well on your way if they have sprouted. You could plant slips in June and get a nice crop in central Florida. You need 90 days of warm weather, and I'm sure you will have warm weather through September. Thanks for the comment.

    Thank you! I watched Part 1 and this Part 2 before subscribing. Wonderful instructions and details. Thanks for recapping Part 1 here for those who might not have seen Part 1.
    I rarely subscribe to channels, but as an urban dweller with 1/4 acre of land in Texas and the desire to grow my own food since 2019 and many tropical fruit saplings purchased in Florida and failed attempts in potted plants.... some sprouted sweet potatoes on my pantry shelf and your videos give me the impetus to get my sweet potatoes going along with my Hibiscus 🌺/Sorrel plants that I started from seeds a month ago on 11 April 2024... Looking forward to success after 4 years of failures!
    I am going to skip the rain water soaking as I already have sprouts and put them in soiling in containers today, 9 May 2024, before separating the potatoes as you did after the second step.
    Looking forward to watching Part 3.
    Thanks again! I will check out what other videos you might have.

      And thank you for the kind comments. Part 3 is already out, and your subscribing helped to push me over the 10,000 subscriber mark, which I am going to celebrate with a video today. I'll be sure to show the current state of the sweet potatoes. Thanks for watching.

      Awesome! You are welcome! I remember prior to hitting subscribed button, I saw it was 9.99K. I see it is now 10K subscribers. Awesome for you! Recommendation, when you have multiple parts videos is to put the different parts in the description box, this way, others can just go to description box for previous or subsequent parts.
      If you get a chance, could you reply with the link to part 3. No worries if you don't... hopefully, I can make some time to find it at a future point.
      Happy farming to you! And thanks for sharing your knowledge in videos with us. It is sorely needed.

    Hello Mr. Back garden yard, sweet potatoes for us in some part of The Philippines is their daily staple food and is a very good healthy food for diabetics... the leaves of sweet potato is very delicious for side plate with either fish or meat and we eat the leaves regularly for anemic persons and we find it effective. The more you cut the leaves for daily consume the more it grows endlessly. Your method of dividing them into hundred plants are so useful, i’m going to do it because i don’t have a garden here in Italy i have a long terrace and i’ll plant them in medium lastic pots too. Thanks for sharing💗i love how you do hardening so i’m your new subscriber now😉☺️

      It's still not too late to harvest full sized sweet potatoes in most parts of USA - They need about 90 days of warm to hot weather after you plant the slips in the beds for the sweet potatoes.
      I would plant a couple of sweet potatoes that have soaked in water for 24 hours, in a very sunny spot in your garden, cover with about 1/2 inch of soil, and keep well watered. The slips should appear in 3 to 4 weeks which would be mid-May. Let them grow an additional 2 or 3 weeks, and plant in the sweet potato bed by first week in June. If you have 90 days of warm weather after that, you will harvest full sized potatoes, otherwise you will still get a harvest, but not as many full sized potatoes. Good luck.

      I just watched the video about 4 hours ago because I have sweet potatoes sprouted on my pantry shelf.... it has happened many times with food items that sprouts as I am guilty for buying food products and not cooking them 😮....so, I have skipped the soaking in rain water to head to the next stage IMMEDIATELY after watching this video with 3 sprouted sweet potatoes! I am looking forward to all the other steps! And now I have other people newly moved into my household so, people to cook and eat the food, yea!

    I loved part one and part two. Looking forward to the next part. I have a question. For the slips that you broke off the original potato, that had a good amount of root on them, Why did you put them back in rooting water? They seemed to have enough root attached that you could have planted them in the garden or at least in a pot. What is the value for additional time rooting in water?

    • @TheBackGardenYard
      @TheBackGardenYard  Місяць тому +1

      Great question. The soil and air temp was still too cold to put outside in the garden. Sweet potatoes hate cool weather. And since I knew I would be planting in the garden in just a few more days, I wouldn't want to go to all the trouble to repot the plants in soil again. Basically just put them in the water again as a holding solution. Thanks for watching.

    Can you cut the sweet potato in half and make slips off of the cut sweet potato?

    • @TheBackGardenYard
      @TheBackGardenYard  16 днів тому

      No, not at first rooting. If you cut a sweet potato into pieces, 2 or more, it usually rots before it will generate slips. Completely different than a regular potato.

      Yes, they will turn green as the slip grows larger. No need to fertilize the slips until they are harvested and planted in the garden plot, they get all they need from the host sweet potato. Thanks for posting.

      @@TheBackGardenYardIf you know how to pause the recording when you get the camera to then position it to give a close up view then this might help. If you are using a mobile phone to record, then using the back facing camera is a great idea. This way, you can always see the screen of the camera on the face of the phone which will be what your audience will see.
      In editing, you can always either cut or speed up the areas of camera change if it is longer than 5 seconds to switch it or leave it as it is.
      I have only watched 2 of your videos thus far which is part 1 and part 2 of this video, but even with a few areas not quite visible, I was impressed with the information you have provided both in video and in verbal explanation that I subscribed even though I rarely EVER subscribed or like videos, I did so for both your videos. I have multiple private Playlist where I put videos I want to access again. The liked videos unfortunately do not do so. Thus with this secondary account of mine that is almost 1.5 years, I have under 50 liked videos and I watched quite a lot of videos.
      Anyway, I am now at the end of the comments on this video... going to see if I can find that part 3 that was posted at least 10 days ago from reading your reply comments.
