  • Your #garden soil already contains everything you need to make #seed starting mix. No need to spend $8 to $30 to buy premixed bagged mix from a store when it's really simple to strain your own topsoil, mix in a little compost and you have all the seed starting mix you need for only a couple of dollars cost... In this video I go step by step and also show you at the end how to load coarse soil first, then the fine strained soil on top for perfect seed starting when you are ready to plant.

I'll never forget that smell of 'cooking' soil. It kinda had a molasses smell to it. We could cook up to a half yard at a time. Learned about this nearly 50 years ago while at an agricultural High School in MA. Bristol County Agricultural High School. My older brother was also there, 2 years ahead of me. This school saved our asses. Fortunately, the school had a dormitory and because we lived so far from the campus we were able to stay in the dormitory. We didn't want to go home. We stayed and worked at the school for summer break. The school actually supplied the cafeteria all the food they could need. It was an incredible opportunity. Some of the best years of my life. 🙏🇺🇲✌️😎

Thanks for sharing that memory. Yes, the heated soil does not smell bad as you heat it to kill the insects and weed seeds.

I did this for the first time this year. I didn't realize the compost could also be baked. Thank you so much for sharing.

Yea, the makers of the bagged compost bake their compost to make it mostly weed free. That's where I got the idea to bake my seed starting mix, because I have a lot of weed seeds in the soil.

Very informative video. I now know how to make my own seed starting soil. Thanks for sharing.

There is nothing like saving 6 to 20 dollars or more when you make your own seed starting mix. And it works very well. Thanks for watching.

I thought I was the only one who cooked his soil! lol I don't cook mine as hot as you do, but I do leave it longer. I usually do it at around 250F for half an hour to an hour. I use a thermometer to check and make sure it is over 200F in the center. I got the idea from composting. If your compost mixture is just right (and mine never is lol) it gets hot enough to kill off any weed seeds in it.

That's cool, I don't think it matters too much, as long as you get it sterilized from weeds and insect larvae.. Thank for the comment, I thought I might be the only one baking dirt...

Yea, she was not really happy that I used the new ones. But she got over it after I scrubbed em. Maybe I'll use foil next time, thanks for the suggestion.

Maybe buy wifey some new baking pans and keep the ones you used for compost cooking for future baking. Happy wife happy life 😂😂😂😂😂

Is the oven fan forced or electric?

I imagine baking the dirt at that temperature would also kill any bugs and eggs, if you were sprouting inside.
I can just see my husband's eyeballs roll when I drag dirt into the oven!😮 great idea, thanks ❤

Yea, I usually do it when my wife is out. You would think it would be a strong smell, but it's not. Just a bit of an earthy smell, lol. Most of the insects were screened out during the sifting process, but you are right, any bug eggs are likely not going to survive the high temps either.

This would probably kill damping-off fungus too, wouldnt it?
