Welcome to my channel! I'll be working on all kinds of different things here.
Small engine stuff, motorcycle stuff, just tinkering around with anything that interests me.
Nothing is scripted, and I didn't really intend this to be a "how-to" channel. Basically I'm working on stuff that I have purchased to re-sell, or maybe working on some customer jobs, (I do have a few loyal customers) and I also have a camera running at the same time. With that being said...I do usually ramble on and explain some stuff as I work, so there is actually a chance that someone might learn something from watching along.
Come hang out with me in my garage and let's see what we can accomplish. Thanks so much for being here!

I know this was an old video but, I'm wondering how to grease the gearbox on mine. I have this exact tractor and I'm figuring at this age, no one has prob done it. Did you put any grease down in the drive gear when you had it apart? Thanks!
You sure do an excellent job explaining what's going on with the mechanical failure. Makes a huge difference!
Great video! how hard is it to move the lift around?
It's heavy, not really designed to be portable like my smaller, narrower one that comes with wheels.
@ where is the smaller one from? Princess auto also?
my primer bulb won't prime...???
Good to see you back!
Once again, another video which reinforces the thought that some people just shouldn’t be allowed to go near tools of any kind. 😂 Thanks, Don - good to see you again! 🔧👍
Looks like you could tell everything that the customer touched. Now you just need to find a way to tell the customer not to have "that" person work on their equipment anymore.
I can't tell you how relaxing it is to watch a small engine repair video after getting home from work and replacing the low beam bulb on a 2012 for fusion. You have to take the coolant overflow off to get at it at all and then they provide about 2 inches of wiring behind the bulb just to make you say some really bad things. I don't know how he thought that snowblower was going to start with that carburetor hanging off there like that. Thanks for another great repair video Random !!
Another good video, interesting how the owner dorked up the repair (but at least they weren't afraid to try). I like the term Bluetoothed connection - interesting. Also glad to see I'm not the only one who talks to themself when working on stuff. Thanks
Works good now, I like the flywheel trick. Good video 😊
I have two vintage ariens 8 horse with coils and one of clip guides on cylinder was missing it was a challenge to keep it away from the flywheel i was wondering what you would use to keep the hose there thanks
Just finished watching this. I really like your videos they are well done with good, easy to follow explanations. That said, if you still have this machine I would suggest you have another quick look at it and maybe pop the carb again. The spring for the throttle shaft is not hooked up. You can see it clearly at time stamp 6:05. You could just hook it back on. But given the state the customer left the carb, if it were me I'd want to check the throttle plate and make sure it wasn't removed and reinstalled wrong, loose or a combination there of, if you haven't already caught it. I've seen people go to unnecessary lengths to install linkage when they don't have the experience. Just my two cents.
now that was a air gap carb
Great to see you again. Sorry I forgot about the starter button. Lol. Great tips.
Great video! I have this exact same unit and I need to replace the same three belts. Your video helped me through the process and I was able to fix everything myself without having to hire someone. This coming from a guy who isn't used to working on these machines. So thank you very much! I do have one other issue and that is the cover by the carb, choke, throttle etc. (at 37:50 mark of your video). The screws or bolts that were holding it in place on my unit are gone. The cover is only holding on by one screw and it vibrates like crazy when running. Do you have any suggestions on what kind of screw or bolt I can buy to secure it down?
Here is what you didnt do ! I'll bet if you pull out the key it will still start !
The brass washer is called a Olive in the UK, probably because they are squeezed/crushed. Great video, something atypical
LOL Your neighbors aren’t going to think that little devil is quiet! Mine is also hard on gas. Uses a tank in less than 30 min.
One of the few models that use an actual ball bearing on the impeller shaft instead of the brass bushing I see on so many. My machine is 35 years old with the original brass bushing in it so they must be good enough if it lasted this long. Just makes me wonder why use a brass bushing instead of a ball bearing?
It would be nice if you show us how to tighten up that fuel shut off on the carburetor
You have taught me a couple of things that I learned incorrectly and I appreciate that, if you wouldn’t mind explaining why we keep the bar supported when tightening up the chain, I feel like I know why but I fall short in my vocabulary and eloquences! I have seen 50% of the sawyers I know who don’t support the bar and who tear through sprockets chains and bars and overheating issues. You sir are an excellent teacher and really easy to understand. I thank you Your student Erik H. San Andreas Ca.
Nice work I was missing a step in assembly and you covered it and I thank you
So I don’t have to take the axle nut off just to remove the drum cover? Just to get to the inside of it ?
I got this lift today (it was on sale for $999) and funny enough, Princessauto sent it to me to troubleshoot why my lift wasn't going back down! Your video shows the adjuster for the lowering speed. A huge thanks again for making this video!!
Glad it helped! Once I get into a bigger shop, I'll be buying probably 2 more of these...
Which compressor do you suggest using with this lift?
I have a 7hp/60gal 11CFM unit. Obviously it works fine. I have not tested the min CFM required though.
@@randomwrenching Thank you!
How much is it when it goes on sale? It's listed at $1,399 right now (regular price)
Got mine a few years ago for around $800
@@randomwrenching thank you! That's worth the wait then :)
Did it ran ok without connecting the evo sensor connector?
Today I took apart a GX160 which was said to burn a lot of oil and give off blue smoke. The top of the piston was full with soot. Someone before me had already changed the piston and rings, and apart from the top it looked almost new! There was also no play between the piston and chamber and I wonder if the issue resides somewhere else, maybe the carb. Also the spark plug was sooted. Any ideas? Should I put new rings and piston?
G day Don Interesting video. I might look into it Ths
Thanks Don
I need to bring up a couple points for your viewers. This is not a battery tester, it’s a battery LOAD tester. People should understand the difference. Also, 230 CCA is not a lot. It’s what many lawn tractors come with from the factory to save costs. They will work but I wouldn’t buy one. 350 CCA is more like what lawn tractors should come with, especially the larger engines.
This unit is nowhere near being called a load tester with its 22ga tiny little wires. Its an electronic tester that measures internal resistances and capacitance to get an idea of what the health is like. Good link here... cloreautomotive.com/battery-testers-and-load-testers-tools-with-different-purposes/ Load testers have a large resistor in them somewhere that loads the battery down, using large gauge cables. Also, I have found over many years that a quality 230CCA battery is just fine here in the cold north. Stay away from anything less though
@@randomwrenching I stand WAY corrected! But what the hell do I know anyhow? 😉 Thanks!
@@Rein_Ciarfella No worries Rein, that link I posted is actually an interesting read for this info. I looked it up myself to see how they work!
That one looks like a recent knockoff of the Topdon load tester I’ve had for going on 3 years. Used it extensively and really like it a lot. It has almost the exact same process and display for testing. The button labeling is different. The beep on this one is annoying and unnecessary. I found out about the Topdon from Jeremy at Themowermedic1. Now I see that Topdon is coming out with other testing equipment as well.
I'm thinking its probable that many products from over there have all the same tech inside but assembled into different plastic casings.
I have used the oven element type for for decades. I use a deep cycle marine and how does it work with installed batteries? Interested in its costs. Thanks for the video. They are always quality.
Thanks Steve. I have only really used the out of vehicle test, I havent investigated the other modes to see the difference.
@ with the newer cars and their computer systems I stopped using my load tester.
Would be kind of cool to see a follow-up on that once you've used it for a while. When it comes to test equipment it is sometimes difficult to decide because there just seems to be so much to choose from these days. Years ago ( when stuff was made in house ) there seemed to be a couple to choose from and they were all built well and reliable. Not so much anymore.
I have actually had this tester for quite a while and I've used it dozens of times. I've been sitting on this video for a while...lol. Hasn't let me down or given me a false result yet.
That is a cool tester , makes it much easier and faster. I also have the old tester but never wanted to use it on small batteries. 😊
Like I said in the video, I have an older type load tester as well. They each have their place. A real load test requires the battery to be at least 85% charged to be accurate, while these little testers can be accurate on a battery with a much lower state of charge.
how is this holding up?
This exact one hasn't been used yet, but this is a common repair done by many people with success
i just pulled the sump to retrieve the dropped push rods and got the heads off today so i figured i’d ask. guess ill find out for myself soon
I have the same generator. It has spark, but it will not start, not even on brake cleaner. Throttle is full open. Where should I look? Is it possible that the intake membranes stay closed and is there a way to check it?
I actually have brake cleaner here that will not run in an engine. I use carb spray, or even better, force fed actual fuel into the intake. How does the compression feel?
I need a air box hose that runs from the carburetor airbox can't find it nowhere I got a 19 82 Honda xl185s can't find that are box hose nowhere
That's probably a long discontinued part I would think
Thanks, good video, now I can do that !!
Glad I could help
Great repair. Thank you for sharing. You must be a magician. I would not have even tried to put the sump cover on without pulling the oil pump gear and shaft. You nailed it no sweat.
Thanks 👍
Hey brother, i ran into exact same problem with a customer's. What would u charge in labor for this job?
I think it was a couple hours labor.
Its JDs way of charging a lot for an oil filter and have the engine go out before it should. Then you either have to replace the engine or buy a new lawnmower.
I have used OEM Briggs Cams and had the new one fail in less than 60 days, I have used aftermarket cams and had them fail, but I have had them last a long time as well. Bottom line, I feel like your taking a chance either way. The cam shafts obviously has a design flaw that needs to be addressed or they would not fail in the first place.
Exactly they way i think about it as well.
Nice to see another video from you again. Good work. Seems like pretty low hours for such a failure.
I heard about using #2 grease on gaskets recently and have found out some people have been doing this forever so now I’m doing that. Anything to avoid difficult gasket removals! The up side so far is the grease helps a little to hold the gasket in place!🔧👍
Tricks of the trade
@@Rein_Ciarfella Me too. Just used that trick for an opposed twin carburetor gasket. They always tear when you’re trying to clean those.
Two days ago I had to check to make sure UA-cam hadn’t fallen down on the job and failed to notify me of a new video. Yesterday you uploaded. I’m getting psychic I guess. 😉
It's been crazy hectic here. I'm trying to get back to it...lol
