“your mother witheld her love from you, dear, i try witholding mine”... referenced again in Marvin at the Psychiatrist, “perhaps she held back love from you”!
I think her ‘oldest’ child is a metaphor for Marvin. As she views him as childish, as noted in March of the Falsettos. Plus she never calls him her son explicitly so I believe she views him as a child. The parakeet is a metaphor for trina, she doesn’t move her wings, she knows what’s going on but she can’t bring herself to fly away from it all. And the baby is Jason, he’s the only literal baby.
Oo I like that, 'the Marvin trilogy.' What I'm calling it from now on. And I agree! In Trousers is just as good as March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland and deserves attention
I came up with this but if you need it for school or something with no cursing. "The baby is crying on the swing set and the oldest is with a friend. The parakeet hasn't moved its wings yet, all good things come to end"
The reason green carnations are one the flag (most likely idk actually but it makes sense) is because they were used in the late 1800s onward as a signal for gay men, popularized by Oscar Wilde!
How the body fall apart First the groin and then the heart It's easy and it's smart Things on which we most depend Seem to fail us in the end How like Like a body When the body falls Apart ["Your Lips and Me"] [HIS WIFE] The baby is crying on the swingset The oldest is kicking ass The parakeet hasn't moved its wings yet All good things come to pass I think of sunshine, and roses in bloom But you're off sitting with another someone In another room That's alright, dear You go on digging your grave, dear I didn't know that you were lonely I thought you'd agree But when I saw your lips I knew they didn't belong to me Your mother reports your father's blue, dear And your father reports he's fine Your mother withheld her love from you, dear I try withholding mine The neighbors love me They tell me I'm great But you're off snoozing with another floozie In another state That's alright, dear You go on digging your grave, dear I didn't know you're so Attractive I thought you'd agree But when I saw your lips I knew they didn't belong to me Nice day Nice life Precious few people squawk Nice Good friends High life Isn't it fun to talk? Wait a minute, when she says “the neighbors love me”, could “the neighbors” possibly be who I think they are?? I mean, there’s no sign that Trina and Marvin moved, and when Trina left Marvin for Mendel, Marvin probably stayed in the same house. So technically, Trina could be talking about THE LESBIANS FROM NEXT DOOR
pretty sure cordelia and charlotte were next door to marvin at his new place, not the house he and trina lived in together. also they would NEVER call trina a clown not my lesbians
I’m a little confused. Is this Trina singing this song. And if so do Marvin and Trina have two kids? I love Falsettos and I want to get into In Trousers as well. Can someone please clear this up for me?
lily markarian Exactly what I'm trying to figure out. It feels like Falsettos and In Trousers weren't meant to be connected. Although I would love to know the story before Marvins big break with Trina
Entre enter I think so too. However when I googled it it refers to Jason as Marvin’s “un-named” child, and doesn’t even mention the other child. One answer may be that the baby is a metaphor for Trina, herself, or what she is feeling. I’m not really sure but it’s just a guess. If they do have two children it would be weird that they did not make mention of it in Falsettos. When Trina says, “The oldest drinks wine.” I think she means herself since in I’m Breaking Down she says, “That is why I might turn to drink.” Jason is also not old enough to drink wine nor is an infant when Marvin leaves Trina. So I’m guessing that Trina is referring to herself when she says the baby is wailing because in Breaking Down she says, “I’ve cried, I’ve shook, I’ve yelled, I’ve heaved.” So maybe these two so called children are Trina expressing herself through fiction characters. This is just a guess and I hope it clears up any questions you have. Thanks for helping me also!!😁😁
Aly H yeah that is what I was trying to figure out too. Since he actually kissed both of them they can’t be fake. Maybe it’s another metaphor but I’m not really sure.

It's a prequel. If you're a fan of Falsettos, you need to hear the original cast recording of "March of the Falsettos," with Alison Fraser as Trina, and "Falsettoland" with Faith Prince as Trina.
This and Falsettos is The Marvin Trilogy. In trousers is first, and Falsettos was split into two different plays instead of two acts. These are the second and thrid

In Trousers needs to have more attebtion brought to it, especially since its part of the Marvin trilogy and Falsettos has recently had a revival.
there're 4 of them. in trousers, march of the falsettos, falsettoland and falsettos.
Falsettos is just March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland put together as a two act musical.
Oo I like that, 'the Marvin trilogy.' What I'm calling it from now on. And I agree! In Trousers is just as good as March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland and deserves attention
Right! WE need a whole Marvin trilogy revival instead of taking songs from all three and making it one.
