The haunting feeling I get from this song is amazing. You can feel just from the piano notes that Trina is distraught and lonely and doesn’t want to lose him while Marvin doesn’t want to hurt her like he is but he doesn’t love her and he’s stuck . William Finn you genius
"May we talk as friends? I dreamt last night, you almost held me. I cry as if on cue; hold me. Hold him too, but stay." I'm not crying idk what you're talking about
i just finished the bootleg of the '85 recording, and i never realized it could get any more sad. it did. at the end of the song, trina holds onto marvins hand, begging for him to stay. then one of the ladies walks in, puts a hat on her head, and then drags her away. (as a reference to i am wearing a hat)
Hey! I’m so sorry to bother, but can you please send me the bootleg? Bootlegcountyflorida@gmail.com, and I’m willing to trade. My list is at elderfreakingafrica.weebly.com. Thanks for reading and please!!
This musical lays such important groundwork for who Marvin and Trina become in March of The Falsettos. When there's a song dedicated to her grief in losing her marriage, it makes her songs in the next act all that more understandable.
[HIS WIFE] Pass the sugar, please I dreamt last night we flew to China Your parents own a car Don't they? Won't they drive away? [HIS WIFE] May we talk as friends? I dreamt last night you almost held me I cry as if on cue Hold me Hold him, too But stay Please drink your tea before it's cold I can't believe We've Worked To end up this way Strip me down But stay Please Please [MARVIN] The sugar Please. Please Jesus Christ You'll come through Please drink your Tea before It's cold Pass the sugar Please You can't go on as if you're dying. A martyr just won't play; hit me Strip me down But say: This is much better for the both of us Now things are better for the both of us [HIS WIFE] Pass the sugar Please [MARVIN] Please [MARVIN & HIS WIFE] Please
Ok so I listened to In Trousers before I watched Falsettos (with no prior knowledge of Falsettos) and I think that is honestly the best way to do it. It helps explain Marvin’s character and why he does the things he does. It doesn’t excuse it sure but I don’t hate him as much as I probably would’ve in the first act.
I haven’t listened to in trousers, except for whizzer going down and now this. BUT OH MY GOD MY HEART HURTS SO BAD LISTENING TO THIS SONG. IM SOBBING, TRINA’S VOICE 🥲💔
When I saw a reading of this show, (they revised it in the years since they made this record), this song came near the end. This sounds like a "nearing the end" song.
"I dreamt last night we flew to China" WAIT. COULD IT BE??? LAST NIGHT I HAD THE STRANGEST DREAM I SAILED AWAY TO CHINA IN A LITTLE ROW TO FIND YA AND YOU SAID YOU HAD TO GET YOUR LAUNDRY CLEAN-
attention in trousers fans: i need in trousers friends and it's virtually impossible to find them out in the wild so if you need someone to freak out about it with pls reply to this comment
Alright can someone explain because Im like highkey confused. This song makes it seem like Marvin wanted to leave Trina but she wanted him to stay, whereas in Falsettos Marvin is forcing her to stay.
This is the song when they split Marvin wanted to leave and Trina missed the moments them two had together you know this cause of her dreaming in falsettos he’s mad about Mendel and Trinas marriage cause he was already full of anxiety his ex full of love and happiness while he didn’t know if whizzer even loved him anymore I hope this helps
“ i cry as if on cue”
“ i can cry on cue, but so can you”

Man the two songs with breakfast in the title are pretty different
Yeah and they're one after the other it's a real nice juxtaposition, and a nice way of jumping back and forth between periods in Marvin's life
i love the 85 recording because he genuinely seems speechless after she goes “hold him too but stay” it just adds so much to her desperation
if you are reading this comment i love u and i wish the in trousers community was more connected 😔
I LOVE U TOO LETS CONNECT MAN
I know I’m late on this but sameee I need someone to talk to

I'm not crying idk what you're talking about
“I can cry on cue, but so can you”
Marvin: Can I have the sugar
Trina: Please I just want you to love me for once
Marvin: Jesus Christ Trina pass me the fucking sugar
THIS IS SO FUNNY 😭😭😭
Wow, suddenly his voice is deep, what a difference from the last song, it was surprising

@@alextouzet oh my bad!
@@fungalhog it's all good, i thought it was a bootleg too tbh but :'( alas, hopefully there's one out there!

He was 14 in the last song
I need somebody to sing this with
I'm up if you want ✌️
this is literally such an unbelievably beautiful song my god
yes it makes me c r y
WOAH HIS VOICE
Watching this then falsettos makes me understand a lot more and make me hate Marvin no more.
Absolute whiplash from the other breakfast song
Love his voice in this
This is the first time I've picked up on Trina saying "hold him too but stay" and FUCKING HELL
i miss this style of musical theatre
I heard the piano and I knew this was gonna break my heart
this is heartbreaking
He's like in his 20s-30s now
they grow up so fast
those "please...please" are so wow. this musical is amazing. William Finn is a genius
As sad as this song is, Marvin is right. Neither of them were happy in that relationship.
[HIS WIFE]
Pass the sugar, please
I dreamt last night we flew to China
Your parents own a car
Don't they?
Won't they drive away?
[HIS WIFE]
May we talk as friends?
I dreamt last night you almost held me
I cry as if on cue
Hold me
Hold him, too
But stay
Please drink your tea before it's cold
I can't believe
We've
Worked
To end up this way
Strip me down
But stay
Please
Please [MARVIN]
The sugar
Please. Please
Jesus Christ
You'll come through
Please drink your
Tea before
It's cold
Pass the sugar
Please
You can't go on as if you're dying. A martyr just won't play; hit me
Strip me down
But say:
This is much better for the both of us
Now things are better for the both of us
[HIS WIFE]
Pass the sugar
Please
[MARVIN]
Please
[MARVIN & HIS WIFE]
Please
going from how marvin eats his breakfast to this is such whiplash

This is still my favorite song
Is his voice being deeper just cause he's an adult in this song? Or more mature?
Jeremy Selby it’s to show a difference in maturity
Yeah, probably maturity. We all know about March of the Falsettos
i love this song
I cry as if on cue. Oh god.

Jazmine Floresvillar yes

@@JoshFreilich I mean even if the song didn't come near the end it would still be a "near the end" song since it's near the end of their divorce
i have never said near the end in one sentence so many times before lol
So we go right from this to whizzer going down huh?
this is the best song 🙄🙄😋😋💖 makes me feel so ... many feelings .... good song
I want to use this as a solo audition piece but I literally can't find any sheet music for it.
If it's not recorded in one session you can probably rip the sound and edit the voices to be quiet if not completely gone.
If you look hard enough there is sheet music I've found some
It's been two years but here: drive.google.com/file/d/146eE_OmSY9DiBXE7Lc3YJBJdJn7zhHs2/view
Solo? Which part?
This ones my favorite in the whole show, it’s just so haunting and beautiful
"I dreamt last night we flew to China"
WAIT.
COULD IT BE???
LAST NIGHT I HAD THE STRANGEST DREAM
I SAILED AWAY TO CHINA IN A LITTLE ROW TO FIND YA AND YOU SAID YOU HAD TO GET YOUR LAUNDRY CLEAN-

didn’t want noone to hold ya, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??
"I dreamed last night you ALMOST held me" WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME
pain. agony, even.
oogh my heart
I think this song says a lot about Marvin's parents but I can't put my finger on it
Marv’s just got ALL the issues
This song makes me wanna die

Marvin's complex in that he wanted to leave, yet he gets angry once Trina finds someone else, because he's envious and greedy in a sense.
Sadly sounds bad with headphones :(
Wdym it sounds fine
This song is one of he most disliked songs from in trousers but it's so pretty
Why does this song make me so uncomfortable 😭
