    Interesting! I always knew the English and Dutch excelled in the field of maritime privateering appropriating ill gotten gold and silver bullion and coinage from Spain 🇪🇸 but I didn't know France was involved in governmentally sanctioned piracy as well!!!

    I'm trying to understand the concept of a justice of the peace? Was each justice of the peace a judge or magistrate? Were the justices of the peace each a member of the Governor's Council? Could a justice of the peace also be a law enforcer like a marshall or sheriff? For example, Colonial New York, under British rule, did each county in New York have their own courts and justices? Just a quick example of a real or hypothetical law case would be helpful to understand further the Colonial Courts and judiciary!!!

    • @ronmiddlebrook8431
      @ronmiddlebrook8431 Місяць тому

      Great questions. Justices of the peace were often all of the things you describe. In England the justice of the peace came to replace the sheriff as the most important county official probably in the 1500-1600s. Much of how they functioned in England came over to the colonies. Each colony had slight variations from the others. South Carolina had very few counties for most of its existence and so had very few of the usual local officers which resulted in the Regulator Movement and rebellion. Typically, each county had a justice of the peace and other justices met with him at quarter sessions of court to hear more serious case. Even though each colony imitated England, beyond this generality I would not venture a more precise guess since each colony had its own differences. If you're interested I would recommend three books that offer a lot of good information about justices of the peace in England (and since the colonies carefully imitated England, this information would apply to the justices of the peace in England's North American colonies.): 'Constitutional History Of England' by George Burton Adams; 'The Constitutional History of Modern Britain Since 1485' by Sir David Lindsay Keir; and 'A Constitutional And Legal History Of Medieval England' by Bryce Lyon.

    I know I'm related to John Cotton. I just haven't figured out the connection. My ancestor is my 11th great grandmother Frances Elizabeth Cotten/Cotton, who married my 11 great grandfather George Abell of Hemington, Stapenhill, and Derby, Leicestershire Esq - Master of the Middle Temple. I'm also related to John White through the same 3rd great grandmother by whom I'm related to John Pease.

    Oh interesting. I have an eleventh great grandmother, Lucy Weston, wife of my 11th great grandfather John Pease, who arrived at Salem, MA 1627 but permanently settled on Martha's Vineyard shortly afterwards. He's buried there. Also, William Bradford's granddaughter Alice Ripley is my 7th great grandmother. Married to my 7th great grandfather Zebulon Edgerton. I'm also descended from Myles Standish on my mom's mom's side. She has a grandma, Fannie Mae Baker, who connects back to him. I have several Mayflower ancestors, and a few earlier.

    My paternal 9th great grandfather fought in the Pequot war. He was living in Saybrook at the time. He became a proprietor of Norwich. He's burried in Founder's Cemetery there, (Post and Gager.) I have numerous Mayflower ancestors. A few who were here before the Mayflower. The most famous pertinent to Connecticut are William Bradford's granddaughter Alice Ripley is my 7th great grandma. I'm a descendant of Myles Standish on my mom's mom's side. Benedict Arnold is desended from my ancestor Mary Gascoigne Arnold, But I'm not descended from Benedict. I have a whole bunch of Sherman ancestors who were in Connecticut by mid 1600s. Probably related.

    My 9x great grandfather, Edward Bobet, was killed during the King Philip War on June 25, 1675 as he was walking with his dog, _returning_ to the garrison in Taunton, Ma from his home in Berkley (family story tells that his wife made him go home to get a “cheese hoop”). He heard a Wampanoag warrior coming so he climbed a tree - which his trusty dog then barked at, alerting the Wampanoag man and resulting in my 9th great grandfather being scalped and killed. Fortunately, my 8X great grandfather had already been born. 😬

    I see Pontiac's Rebellion as the first north American War of independence from the British. It led to the Royal Proclamation of 1763, the Treaty of Niagara 1764 ,The Covenant Chain Wampum presented by Sir William Johnson at the conclusion of the Council of Niagara. Those promises were broken

      Great points. Had the British continued the trade and gifting policies of the French do you think the rebellion would have happened--and if the answer is 'no' was it really a war of independence or of dependence?

    Couldn't remember the name for "The War of the League of Augsburg" on a history test but I knew the year of the war and who was on the throne. Well done, thank you! Two points that may not be accurate.: 1. The persecution of witches did not reach its height in medieval time, but in the Renaissance period. 2 Tituba made the witch cake following the instruction of a neighbor woman...it is a remedy rooted in English folk practice, not the Americas or Carribean.

    The book Autumn of the Black Snake puts forward the theory that the Quebec Act of 1774 was a, if not the tipping point for Virginia planters to include Washington, as their land claims West of the Ohio river were rendered invalid. Have you looked into this? I hadn't read about it prior to this book, so I'm wondering how much currency this point of view has.

      @@ronmiddlebrook8431 in a nod to the French that were now British in Canada, the person the King appointed to administer it was also Catholic which must have gone over really well with the Colonists, but the whole affair casts the now more land-poor Washington in a different light when he shows up to Congress in uniform a few months later as well as him being the largest land owner in the colonies after they won.

    The battle of Cartagena was one of the most humiliating battles of that time ,As Vernon arrival to Cartagena and see the enemy forces, immediately send a ship to England with the news , Cartagena was falling. With over 30 000 soldiers, close to 200 ships face a force of les that 4000 Spaniards including 600 indigenous archers under the command of Blas de Lezo ( nick name half a man , because in different previous battles lost an eye , arm and a leg ) Vernon could not take Cartagena and lost around 20 000 man and several ships. It took him two years to get back to England were all the coins made about his victory had to be destroyed.

    In the course of working on family history I became aware of my direct connection to Queen Anne's War. My 6th great grandmother was taken captive at age 5 during a raid on Saco Maine in August 1703. I had not followed that line to any great detail and assumed they were all French. Could you point me to a source that covers the southern Maine raids in detail. I would like to visit the area where their farm was located in the Saco-Biddeford area. I contacted the library in the Sack area and they were able to provide me with a brief description of the raid and the names of some of the captives that went along with the information I had received from Family Search. I read my first book on these wars when I was 12. Rogers Rangers and the French and Indian War. This discovery has renewed that interest.
