  • This is the Twenty First in a series of podcasts about Colonial American History. It explains how the English Revolution of 1689 influenced the colonists who in 1776 would would rebel against King George III in much the same way Parliament had done to King James II in 1689.

It could also be mentioned that because of this revolution, England underwent many economic and political reforms that allowed it to develop an unrivaled navy that could contain France and dominate world trade and finance. This obviously helped the colonies flourish as well, and the new US government could organize itself similarly.
By the way: most historians now agree that the invasion was the idea and enterprise of Wiliam of Orange, not of the MP's. He had sent a letter to his friends in English parliament to send him an invitation to invade, so that he could present himself as a liberator rather than a conqueror to the English. He had also been building up an army and navy with the goal to invade Britain before this invitation had been sent.
