Why Inflammation is Helpful

Beth Roars and Jennie Morton delve into the osteopathic perspective on inflammation and pain. The narrative challenges the simplistic approach of merely switching off inflammation. Instead, it emphasizes recognizing inflammation as the body's way of communicating deeper issues, which could be mechanical, environmental, nutritional, or emotional. Stress plays a significant role in amplifying one's senses and pain. By addressing the root causes and using stress-relief techniques, the overall pain can be mitigated, providing a holistic understanding of symptom expression.

Great interview! I'm going to have to remember a lot of that next time I film a video for my channel. I found what she said about how the feet affect singing to be particularly interesting. I use a wheelchair and I've definitely had to adapt what I've learned about stance and grounding while singing. Incidentally, I couldn't help chuckling at her meat analogies, knowing that you're vegan and being vegetarian myself.

I've been "striking" fires since I was a boy, as a boy scout and I am still amazed at how "experts" will have the person using a fire steel and using their scraper against the steel instead of holding the striker, close to the bundle and pull the steel backward against the striker. Even when using a flint (chert), I would pull it against the striker. In this way, all of the sparks are produced in one spot and thus heats that spot up faster than having your sparks flying all over the place. I like to carry cotton balls in an airtight container and have a silica gel pack in it to ensure the cotton is always dry. My fero-rod with striker and I am set to start a fire.

Thank you, Beth! A great, well-constructed exploration of the old nature v. nuture debate. Epigenetics research has shown that there is also the interaction between the two, and so although this makes understanding the issues more challenging, it helps explain why there is no simple conclusion to be drawn. You make a point I have often felt was important - it may be a 'talent' to have the ability to stick at something for hour-after-hour. As a kid I would play football almost every weekend, and often in the evenings. But I never became good enough to play at even a high amateur level. I began to understand things better when I discovered that David Beckham, who ended up captaining England was OCD, and would often play for ten or twelve hours at a time. I really had no chance! I'm sure there are ways of helping people to develop the ability to practise for longer periods, but wonder whether those like me can ever learn to put in the hours as Beckham did. Deliberate Practise refers to a particular way of practising that is essential - just doing something for ten thousand hours without it won't help that much. For example, a taxi driver won't take that many years to rack up ten thousand hours, but probably will not be much better than when he/she started. When we use Deliberate Practise we break things down into small pieces, work on each piece until we have mastered it, and then move on. We usually will have a coach of some sort, and we'll get instant feedback. There are other qualities to Deliberate Practice, and using them all really does help us make great progress in our development. Thanks for such an interesting and informative vid!

One year later I'd be interested to know how much you've improved. Having a conversation after barely 2 weeks is a feat in itself, regardless of which language you're learning! If you're still into learning French I'd recommend learning from audio books, and eventually from movies/songs once you're more comfortable. Reading text as you're hearing it is the best of both worlds IMHO, even with basic training. That's how I learned English a couple years earlier than most (back in the early 90s... shush!), eventually allowing me to work in localization many years later. Endless lists of items to learn out of context are the worst... Come see us for the olympic games next year, maybe? I'd happily share a few tips & tricks to ease through the unavoidable culture shock.
