Hi Beth. I'm Spanish, and if I'm not missing something here I think that this title translation "Cercé a una campeona esgrimista" is flawed. “I fensed a Champion Fencer” should be translated as “practiqué esgrima con una campeona esgrimista”. “To fence” does not hace a double meaning in Spanish, so if you say “Cercé (that’s also wrong, for it should be “cerqué”) a una campeona esgrimista”, you are actually saying that you built a fence aroud her, or that you surrounded her. We use the verb “esgrimir” when we talk about wielding a weapon.
Another possible translation: "Me batí con una campeona de esgrima".
You know in french "tiré" have multiple senses ^^
Everyone: Oh no, two people fencing, how would u know which one is Beth 😱
Beth's hair: My time has come 🦄
I'm not really in favor of not being able to see Beth's eyes and smile, though.
I have learned more about fencing in the last 15 minutes than in the 50 years I have been alive.
Beth, I love the new format. Keep it up.
Beth, you should speak with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. Not only a great singer but was also a champion fencer
And commercial pilot, and author, and radio personality, and successful entrepreneur, and....actually, Beth should read his book because I think she will relate on many levels. What does this button do?
Probably easier said than done with an artist on that level of fame, who probably gets 30 requests per day for different interviews/pod talks, but it would be an amazing listen for sure!
Never mind, I forgot how big her main channel is and that she has already talked to some really big names like Sinead O'Connor.

Next challenge, fly the Ed Force One! At least that challenge would be much less stabby!
🤣
What a good idea, Malcolm!
This was great fun Beth! I am pretty good at many things and I always make sure my grandkids understand that the reason I’m good at so many things is because of my willingness to experience different things. Sometimes successfully and sometimes not. We have but one life, so go for the gusto!
That looks like a lot of fun. I like how informative these videos have been. It is great that you included the Project Forte segment to raise awareness. Enjoy your holidays.
Glad you enjoyed it! Have a happy holiday as well :)
I've always been a fan of fencing. Fencing requires bravery, fitness, quick reflexes, intelligence and lots of practice. I'm glad that you filmed this video. You remind us that fencing is still alive. You did great! All the best to Kate on Project Forte. And lastly Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
I’m a huge fan of dueling but fencing is super unrealistic. It is cool though, just the exact opposite of the type of training you’d want to for real life or death situations.
@@Loregasmo Like reflexes, balance and distance measurement is exact opposite of what you need in real life or death situations...
This was my first full video on your new channel, and I love the format and the concept both. You picked a good thing to learn and good people to learn it from.
Nice to hear the first rule of fencing actually is "Stick 'em with the pointy end"! 😉
I love that you elevated what would have been just another fun video by using your platform to promote Project Forte. Nice work.
Next step after Sabre fencing : F-86 cockpit sitting :)
No, not just sitting, we need to get her to actually pilot the plane!!! I wonder if there is still a flight worthy TF86...🤔
Great basic tutorial on the basics of the sport. I've seen it many times - but never understanding the basics of the "piste" or the footwork or scoring. Beth's penchant & expertise in explaining complex things is great here, and lovely to see the channel branching out & growing.
I like how you just go out and do a bunch of super cool fun stuff. Cheers!
You are creating great content on this channel. It's just so positive and uplifting. Exactly what the world needs now.
So you've done sport fencing... now I'd love to see you try out some HEMA fencing. Long swords and no runway (piste). More like fencing in the round. Some clubs will use nylon swords while some use blunt steel swords. There is a bit more protective clothing due to the possible extra force from a heavier and stiffer blade but it is very fun. Sport fencing is an extremely fast linear 3D chess match. HEMA is a slower (a little) but heavier full 3D chess match. Timing and distance work are still key but the angles multiply when you can step off line. If you do try it, don't neglect the pommel or grappling but also know that one major target is the hands. Extend yourself too far though, and be prepared for a blow to the top of the head. As for right of way (who the attacker is) there is nothing except for one beat after a successful attack, you can counter attack. If you both hit there is no point awarded and some tournaments require pushups from both combatants should you both touch. This means that one other key to HEMA is the hit and then a parry in order to not get a return hit within that beat.
NOTE I believe SCA and HEMA are related.
I've had this experience as well, I was a member of a local club for several years and Foil was my favorite. I took it to the next level and was an Assistant Coach at a junior college in Fencing and participated in a few local competitions. Then I went to a regional meet and finally fenced against some of the U.S. Olympic team and found out how outclassed I was. They used the same techniques I used but my goodness their speed was amazing. I lost every match and only managed to score two touches out of three matches, I knew at that point I would only be a recreational fencer. It was good exercise and I stuck with it for a few more years but that was pretty much it.
I only found this video because I’ve been playing a dungeons and dragons game for three years with Kate Daykin’s sister but learning about fencing was legitimately fascinating
This was really cool.
I would die if you were to go to a SCA event, not sure if they have them in Scotland though.
I fence as a Sabreur in the Sabre discipline. it is a great sport with a lot of history, culture and tradition. It's also one hell of a workout.
I took a class in fencing at East Tennessee State University back in '87. It was a lot of fun!
indoor bouldering, I just discovered it and i'm hooked, best sport and community i've ever found.
WOW! That was awesome! Your movement and reactions were great!
Excellent go at a very complex technical challenge
Absolutely love this! Thank you for sharing!
Great video, keep it up!
Really interesting! Thank you!
I've been a subscriber on your reaction channel for quite some time. This format is amazing. You go out and try something very few people ever attempt or even pay attention to. You're not afraid to take a chance on looking silly, you just have fun doing whatever it is, and I think that's great. You remind me of Mike Rowe and his Dirty Jobs show. I think this has great potential.
Thank you!
Saw you on tom scott's channel , I've been fencing for a very long time and so this video was really fun to watch!
Glad you enjoyed!
Really want to try this now. Thanks for showing this.
Beth, this was hilarious and informative. I can't wait until next time to see what you do. Thanks for these.
Cool! Love seeing you check other things out! This farmer would like to see you do something farm related...drive tractor, care for animals, milk a cow... whatever you feel drawn towards. And thanks for both of your channels! Love them both!
We were thinking of trying do a few days working at an animal sanctuary! :)
@@RoarRawr Good place to start! Most likely individual care for each critter and most sanctuaries have a few different animals...good life experience.
Would recommend doing a day or two on a real farm too. People are so disconnected to food now a days...plant or animal based. I think you would get a kick out of seeing a large operation....crop or critter.
How fun. Thank you for exposing me to this sport.
Really wonderful, fun, informative stuff. You are all around awesome!
Glad you enjoyed it!
It's like kendo when I was at uni; in the beginning, I wasn't any good, but I was pretty decent after 3 years and a lot of practice.
Like fencing, it's a sport that teaches things like discipline and patience (like I sparred with someone who was a wee bit more skilled than me: even with armour on, I still got my bells rung pretty hard when I got hit on the head by his shinai. Didn't win and I had a headache for a few hours, but I had fun)
This is very good content. For me it's always welcome to watch inexperienced people try new and different skills. Also kudos to Kate, her work outside the piste is very important and life-changing.
I'm subscribing now and excited to watch more. Thanks!
Still watching But I've got to say, how much I've enjoyed these episodes. They are awesome and I'm glad you did them. I look forward for more.
Thank you!
I LOVED THIS! Great video, and such a great program helping victims of trauma! Kudos, Beth! 👍🏻
Thank you. Kate and Phil are doing wicked work. It's super lovely to see.
Nice! Great enthusiasm 😄
I really enjoyed this video Beth you definitely have loads of talents
Thanks Jason.
Well done. It can be so rewarding to try something physically demanding, that forces you to move in ways you have never done before. I have never tried fencing but I have done a few years of weapons training and I loved it. Im really loving this channel and cant wait to see whats next. If you really enjoyed this, maybe boxing or jiu jitsu would be something else you might want to try.
Well you're practically the Punisher (judging by your profile name 😜), so I think fencing or jiu jitsu would be like a walk in the park for you lol.
@@adamkeane2622 Years of training, but its like the only thing I'm any good at, and never took it too seriously.
@@crankfastle8138 Yeah, 'cause you're the Punisher...😜
Thank you beth thank you for showing me that all I need to do is make an effort and try new a exciting things awesome job
Love the video! :)
Thank you!!
Beth, I am LOVING these! I could not be happier seeing you broaden your horizons. Okay, next step is a day @ Basic Training with (I'm assuming) Scottish military? As a Canadian veteran, it would be neat to see what you come away with. Cheers, and Merry Christmas!
this was a great video. thank you for this. You got to go full speed with Kate! so fun
Glad you enjoyed it!
I respect you are going out of your comfort zone doing all these difrent skill
sets thank appreciate this fun videos i really like music too though are you giving lessons have a Great day Beth i am in México so its night time over here take care and God protect you
I tried fencing once during fresher's week (a rather disappointly loooong time ago), and even though at the time I was quite fit, I was pooped within 10 minutes. Kudos to you. But, more importantly, thank you for highlighting Project Forte!
Fenced in college. First day, just going to try it out at that point and I get paired with a guy that was on the Thailand Olympic team. *Blindingly* fast.
You could try some chemistry. Extracting the clove smell (eugenol) from cloves would be fun to watch. Or transform (genetically modify) bacteria, that's not difficult.
My wife was a competive fencer and also is a musician. She plays flute and piano, both of which requires hand and finger coordination. It's interesting that the teacher mentions having good rhythm, too.
immediately a mental picture appears of Ian Anderson barging onto the fencing-piste, flute whirring like a propeller, sweeping everybody out of the way.
Very cool, blessings..
Awesome effort and really cool to feature that program :)
I think I would have had a hard time with the offense part - my flight instinct would be much stronger!
Point control is very important Beth. And keep your front foot pointing forward to your oponant.
Fabulous Beth! Sloth like no more!
Fencing is a ton of fun, and this seems like a really wholesome use for it :)
It's amazing just how quickly it goes though- I fenced an Olympic level fencer before, and without even really trying he would land hit after hit on our wrists, and always seemed to be just out of reach
came here from your other channel watched Maiden reaction you spoke of this channel watched this nice well fenced new sub here as well
That looks exciting.
First time viewer and subscriber to this channel, it looks like this should be fun! Bravo, Beth!!! I'd be interested if you tried cliff diving.
Great content as always. You're also finding out what makes them them. 😀
My Grandfather was good at fencing and put up quite a few in his time
Thank you Beth.. That was interesting...
Something else i've always meant to try but never got around to..
Well done...👍
You should! It was loads of fun. I'm going to be going back for some sessions in the new year!
@@RoarRawr ...Enjoy....! x
Loved this! I always thought I'd like to try this, but I have terrible eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity. Suggestions: Rugby/Tag Rugby, American Football/Flag Football, Softball or Baseball, Basketball, Trap (target) shooting, billiards, bowling, volleyball, kickball, rock wall climbing, wind tunnel wind suit flying, car racing (so many options,) and plane or helicopter flying lessons. Loch Sloy! ~Be Blessed
that looked like a lot of exhausting fun! (kind of like some fierce choreography) are you able to do some Trap Shooting or Drag Racing? both demand a great deal of coordination and are WICKED FUN (not to mention expensive at the higher levels!)
and Happy Christmas to you and yours!
Happy Christmas! Epic ideas! Might take me a while to organise but sound fun!
i took fencing in school, and i liked it, but the teacher told me that my short stature was an advantage -- but it sure didn't FEEL like one when a bigger person is advancing on you with a fencing foil! it was so hard to stand your ground.
I had a friend that spent a good deal of time fencing. He used to tell me how much fun it is and that I should try it. I never did. I'm probably too old and fat now, but it really looks like a strategic game where twitch muscles rule. Good lord these top guys and/or girls are fast. Good on you for stepping out. I learned a lot.
"There are some vicious shuttle cocks out there" No doubt, good one.
Obviously they told Kate to move at about 1/10th her normal speed, or less, and keep the strategy very simple. I suspect a novice fencer could not get a point off her whether they played to 10, or 1000.
I think your worst problem is you were smiling under there way to much. :-) Ya gotta get that killer instinct goin on.
muito legal, obrigado
Beth saludos desde Colombia 🇨🇴
I love how you started out with the saber. When I was younger I was obsessed and don't know why its not more popular among the televized sports. I also wonder if being a leftie would be an advantage. And, can we talk about the final duel in Rob Roy? Not accurate but nobody said they were Inigo Montoya either so...
Fencing!! 🎤🎧🎼&🤺!! Kudos!! En Garde!
Inspiring
Thank you :)
Wow! Enjoyed this. Recommend a film from the past…”By The Sword” with F.Murry Abraham. It’s encouragement.
Very cute. "Yes, they do actually say that." Yea, everything is in French in fencing. I captained our squad back in college. I do miss it.
Love 💕 your new channel. You did very well in the sport of fencing. There are similar movements in martial arts, maybe you should try karate. Thank you.
Way to keep challenging yourself🤗. Maybe highland games or highland dancing in the future.
Ok, now I'm really curious to see you trying another sport/art involving a sword: kendo. It's as intense as fencing (if not more).
From the looks of it 'footing' is where you lay the base of your success? In other words nimble footed balance Vs. sprint back and forth. (I probably would make the same mistake out of nervousness)
Beth you simply couldn't find a better sport to take part in.
Yeah sports another one of the great assests human kind has to offer. Just like music. Getting to know your self better, learning, improving yourself, setting goals for yourself, etc, etc. Yeah sports something to treasure! At any level!!
And for the rest? As a famous little creature once shouted! Control, Control, You have to learn Control!:):):):):) Do or do not. There is no try!!:):):)
🥇🏆⚡🤺⚔️You did great, Beth! ❤️🦁
I'm going skydiving this summer, and I think it'd be really cool if I could see you do it as well :)
😍
Not on my bucket list but good on ya!
Have you ever played Bruce Dickinson from iron maiden?
I have! You wonder why he has such vocal stamina,
I played against him in about 1986 (approx) 😎
Maybe I missed it. I'll have to watch again. ...but what's the deal with the tether????
And a big thumbs-up to Project Forte!!
Hmm... What can I inspire you to do next?🤔...💡 I know! How about climb a mountain?!!! Maybe Ben Nevis, tallest in Scotland! 🏔
Hi Beth, it was interesting, I would like to see you at a rugby practice!!!
That would be cool!
You mean football?
I wish you well with this channel!!!!
You have a bit of MIKE ROWE in you....... ('Dirty Jobs' and other shows)
If you haven't done it, how about a vertical wind tunnel flight. Or the actual plane to ground free fall to chute deployment under an instructor if you are heights challenged?
Here's what you would be doing, but these people have obviously done a few flights. Initially just flying in position takes a little bit of time to learn. But as you can see, they'll grab on for some a little more advanced fun:

Here's what a top level pro can do, and it begs belief:

Now try to get Bruce Dickinson for an interview on fencing and singing.
Hi new to your channel but I fence with a Epee IRL so major props for going Sabre and that pesky right-of-way rule, especially going up against a medalist, will you continue poking people with a sword?
Hey! Welcome. Yeap. I am going to take some classes in the new year! It was super fun :)
@@RoarRawr Thank you. 😁
Awesome! Good luck and have fun When you do!
@@RoarRawr find your nearest HEMA group where you can practice real swordsmanship...
This looks like a lot of fun to try.
I wonder if being left-handed would be an advantage for me.
It was loads of fun. I think there are pros and cons. You should give it go! Let me know how it goes :)
Roar! I so wish I could get your autograph.
Drop me an email beth@bethroars.com and I'll get it to you. :)
@@RoarRawr What makes me like you the best out of all the reaction videos is that you actually back it up and release videos of you singing. Nobody else does, they just say if they like it or not. Your new channel is awesome too!
Isent Bruce Dikensen an fencer? Remember something from an documentar from late 80 early 90 when headbangers ball asked what the Iron maiden does beside playing music and hit all lists
He is indeed :)
You threw it over the fence with this video. Now you are one step closer to become a Lethal Weapon... with elegance; and tons of kindness.
Nah, she's more like a descendant of the OG William Wallace himself!

😂
@@whiteeulogianraven7995 You mean "She's a killer Queen"? 😉
the new commonwealth champ in the slo-mo version..how does it feel?.get the gold medals out.i would be absolutly terrible at this but looks like a good workout :)
Now, you may interview Bruce Dickinson... And you may start with your experience with fencing... Becauseb he was famous being a fencer! 😊
Let us see you play drums. Biggest challenge in a metal band. 😁🤘
Careful! Once you take up fencing you're in it for life. It is extremely addictive!
Hey Beth, is it better to be offensive or defensive when fencing? Take no offense. It is always better to mend fences than to break them. I get your point, Fencing is cool. Take care 🙂
hope i can help
fencing styles are very different i personally am a counter attacker the goal is to learn how you fence and use is effectively. The weapon fenced is sabre and is the fastest of the three so the attack is highly important.
any questions i can try answer :)
I dare you for your next video to do indoor bouldering, a rock climbing discipline
idea for next video; axe throwing
You should try kendo
Yes! I want to hear Beth's kiai (sorry if I wrote it wrong)
