I firmly believe that the older you get the more conscious you become of your own mortality. Things that you normalized when you were younger are not as scary as those same things first experienced when older, even though the risk is the same. Bravo for breaking the fear barrier and taking the calculated risk!

You have my deepest respect. This is a fear that I've never been able to surpass. More than the falling sensation, it's more about entrusting my own life to someone I do not know.

    • @cemerson
      @cemerson 2 роки тому +3

But in a way, don't you do that every day in very mundane situations all the time?

    • @GuilleAcoustic
      @GuilleAcoustic 2 роки тому +4

@@cemerson Yes, in a way .... but everyday situations are just stuff you can't really escape. You'll have to walk, ride a car, take a bus or even a plane to go from a place to another. You'll have take medication or have a surgery when sick, but there's higher risk not been treated. Maybe, as I did, you'll develop an allergy to strawberry at an adult age, all of a sudden.
Bungee jump on the other hand is not mandatory, it's something you do because you want to and you have zero control over it, except the decision to jump.

    Well done Beth!
For my 18th birthday my parents gave me a bungy jump (65 meters) and when I stood there on the crane it literally took me 5 minutes to make the jump, but I did it! and recently for my 31th birthday they gave me my first skydive (4000 meters), it was the scariest thing I've ever done... I think there's different levels of stepping outside your comfort zone, and in my case with the skydiving I quite literally fell out of it with a speed of200 km/h, it took me two days to feel normal again and after that I could proudly say I did it; but stepping so far out of my comfort zone was incredible overwhelming!
It's a weird feeling to freefall for 30 seconds...

The intrepertation of the 1933 quote from US President Roosevelt is very interesting. By jumping, and including the Circus act, it surpassed the fear. So... 'The onlything to fear... is Fear itself' WAS proven true.
The accomplishment OF conquering your fear, both at the circus and the Jump Platform, clearly demonstrates faer is NOT your Master. Vice versa!!!
BRAVO, Young Lady!!! Terrifying at it was... you won!! =)

Following a collapsed lung 5 years ago and the surgery required to repair it, I medically can't bungee jump, scuba dive or sky dive. It's honestly something I'd never wanted to do but as soon as I was told I couldn't, I was a little annoyed the option was taken away from me.
Props to you for trying new things!

Roosevelt sad the line about fear to stop people from running on the Banks when wall Street fell. The whole quote is "The only thing to fear is fear it's self, nameless unjustified fear & terror which paralyzes the need to convert retreat into advance..." He then closed the banks for a few days & called a special session of Congress to form recovery plans.

The best way to conquer a fear is to face it head on and not let it stop you from going through with it.
Obviously, don't do it if it'll kill you or there's a chance you'll get hurt, but go through with it if you think "this is silly: I CAN'T live in fear anymore".
It's also and ultimately about assessing yourself in small steps. Like I used to be TERRIFIED of heights, but in uni, I had a chance to climb up this outdoor playground. I was scared out of my head, but stopped at every level to say something to myself like "push on. You won't fall" or "You CAN do this!". Eventually reached the top and I was REALLY overjoyed!
Even when I rock-climbed, I was strapped in and told myself "You CAN do this! Don't look down!". Made it all the way up, but I was SCARED!

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”

I absolutely hate heights, but I did a jump to raise money for the local Obs/Gyni unit at the local hospital. It was supposed to be the 150ft crane but they said we were lucky - there had been a cancellation elsewhere and we had the 180ft. I turned the air blue on the way up. The huge air bag looked like a postage stamp. A couple of staff from my workplace had turned up to watch. They said I looked so bad after the jump they both gave extra fiver each. Still hate heights, but it's like getting used to new flavours - bit by bit it's getting a little easier. So all respect to you for it and all your future endeavours. :D

I love the quote from the Will Smith move which is:
“Fear is not real. The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Do not misunderstand me danger is very real but fear is a choice.”

Congratulations on going through with it :)
In my own experience, I think being really tired (or otherwise not feeling great) can also affect your fear response. I am not a fan of amusement park rides (height/speed/spinning), but my friend convinced me to go on California Screamin' at Disney's California Adventure - at the time, I had barely gotten any sleep the night before and we had been traveling for a few hours that morning. I am still surprised that I agreed to it.
I think there is also something to be said for your brain deciding that a particular action is necessary. I am really afraid of heights, but my brain pushed that to the side when I got a job (that I really needed) on the 7th floor of a building.

One my favorite films, "Fearless" (1993), is about what might happen if we no longer feel fear. Fear is an important aspect of the human condition. Whether it is overcoming irrational fears or accepting fear to avoid serious consequences, we must have it in our lives. That's a great film and this was a great vid. Thanks!

I gave the book for my daughters to read. True stories. In my past work life, I should have been dead many, many times over. I love that everywhere is Scotland has a name that sounds like you are just making it up on the spot. Best of luck with whatever major change you are vaguely alluding to. A minor note but you maybe should have gotten a psychiatrist for the mental part. I'm not sure the "nervous system reset" purported by Kati is actually a thing. People suffering from PTSD can benefit from exposure therapy but it has to be done in a controlled environment. Combat soldiers have been show to develop larger amygdalas from constant exposure to combat.
I'm not saying there are no benefits to bungee jumping. Doing something you are afraid to do is a great way to find out what you are capable of. I've never liked the term overcoming fear. I think learning to function while you are afraid is a better way to describe it. It is impressive you were able to do it. Good job.

Nowhere near as impressive, but I recently went over the Capilano suspension bridge in Vancouver. It's 70m high over a ravine (a bit like where you jumped) and sways as people walk on it. Absolutely terrifying to me as someone who doesn't like heights, and my legs were wobbling for a good hour afterwards, but it was very rewarding to get over it!

If not, is it because there isn't really anything to gain since this was about getting past that fear? Or I guess a way to put it is... is there a way to embrace this as more than a one-and-done kind of experience?

There seems to be a flaw in human thinking concerning whether or not it would be benefical to be in light or dark on ones way to somewhere. If you are in the dark and you see a light source a distance a ways and suddenly it disappears, wouldn't you know something has happened? Now take the opposite: You are in the light walking towards darkness, do you notice that in the darkness there is another darkness (or a shadow) coming towards you?

Roosevelt's quote was about the state of the Nation at the time. Not actually about fear. He meant that nothing oin this world was able to stop us (USA) except our own apprehension. But i get the duality of the quote and how it applies. now I am wondering why I am posting at all... you get an interaction on your post. so theres that.

Too many horror stories from those "sling shot" rides at fairs & carnivals, this would be similar. Plus the cords how often are they tested, inspected, ect.? How many jumps prior to mine has that cord endured? That is the stuff that will be going through my head.

I've actually also done that before, and I find it way less scary than bungee jumping. I think it doesn't feel like you might hit the ground as much and being on a parachute is lovely!

I'm pretty sure Roosevelt would have wanted people to be able to do things they fear when the time is right and not just for its own sake. I don't know why you seem to think that what you are saying contradicts that. If you have the understanding of what fear is about, then you can decide whether your instincts are actually what need to be followed now, and indeed, you can use them as information, not necessarily as a deterrent, depending on the situation. What you don't want is a situation where something drastic is called for and you are not up to the task. Sometimes, those situations involve fear and that is when you need to decide that fear, while it gives you warnings, doesn't get to the heart of the situation in a way that your rationality does appreciate. That ultimately, you make the decision, not the fear; the fear may be there, but you get to decide whether you will go away from it, or go into it. It goes without saying that you want to use this power intelligently and not foolishly. At least, some would have thought...
Besides, if fear is so useful, then having fear of fear would make sense anyway, right? You being scared of fear would mean that, again, your body is instinctively warning you about something, in this case fear itself. It could be useful to have such a warning in the same way you seem to lay out, since fear has potential upsides and downsides one should not look at carelessly. It's just kind of an interesting meta way of looking at things. From the fear of fear you can begin to bring attention to the possible problems of your fear, before, perhaps, trusting that fear.
There are a lot of ways of accepting the quote and integrating the things (virtues or otherwise) you are saying about fear.
