Kentucky Bluegrass Fall Recovery
The fall Recovery of my Kentucky Bluegrass lawn after one of the hottest and dryest summers on record here in Philadelphia. Still very little to no rain here for the fall grass growing season. The month of September here our rainfall was 3.5 inches less than normal for rain fall and with today, the time of this video October 20TH there has been no rain at all for the month and the long-range forecast for the rest of the month is saying no rain. The month of October is prime cool season grass growing time and without having an irrigation system my Kentucky Bluegrass would be brown and dormant. I have been running my irrigation system daily to get that nice fall look in the lawn. So far it has been working. The temperatures have been absolutely perfect for cool season grass. If we would just get some rain here it would be a perfect fall for my Kentucky Bluegrass.

The End Of A Long Hot And Dry Summer For The Lawn

We have had 24 days of relentless heat with temperatures in the low 90's to high 90's with heat index's well over 100 degrees. This is a bad time for cool season lawns. • @aroundthehousewithpat31
      @aroundthehousewithpat31 3 місяці тому

      @@PrincessCutLawnCare Hi George! Thank You for the compliment! I have been watering every day because of the lack of rain and also because of the extreme temperatures over the last few weeks. My lawn is 100% KBG. the root system with KBG is shallow. KBG is also very thatchy. When the temperatures are extreme deep and infrequent just doesn’t work. Watering is definitely a controversial subject with lawns. If I water deep and infrequent when temps are pushing 100 degrees like it has for the last few weeks I have many areas that start showing that it needs water. The grass gets this gray look to it when it needs water. Kind of like being a tell tale sign that it’s about to go dormant. The problem then becomes looking out for disease. Just a little thatch in the lawn will promote disease when watering every day. It’s a very fine line trying to keep KBG a nice green lush color during the extreme heat of the summer. If I start to see any disease I back off water for a day or two on the area showing a little disease and it recovers pretty quickly. I’ll think about how I could put it in a video and do one. I’m sure I’ll get killed with a lot of comments on how I’m doing it wrong. 😂 But really you have to learn what works and what doesn’t for your own situation. For me watering everyday in the heat works.

      @aroundthehousewithpat31 3 місяці тому

      @@JB-jl1cp it’s all Kentucky Bluegrass. I have never seeded with perennial ryegrass. KBG is a thatchy grass type and has a shallow root system. Those two issues alone make it a difficult grass to care for in extreme hot temps. So far I have been able to keep it looking nice. I deal with that problem every summer except this year the extreme heat and lack of rain came early this year. I normally dethatch in early spring and late summer. I was surprised at how much thatch I removed. It was a lot. I’m glad I did it. The lawn looks good. Funny, I was just thinking of dethaching some areas of my lawn. Good timing. I do have an irrigation system and it's going to be over 100 for the next few days. I also have dogs and in order not to get dead spots from dog piss is always saturate the piss area with water and you won't have a problem. You will be essentially diluting the nitrogen in their urine.

    • @aroundthehousewithpat31
      @aroundthehousewithpat31 3 місяці тому

      The heat has been extreme. My lawn is KBG. I definitely over water but I have found that over the years of maintaining it I am better off to over water. I do get some disease from doing that but it really isn’t anything that the lawn doesn’t recover from. If it wasn’t for the extreme temperatures I probably wouldn’t have bothered to dethatch it. I usually only do that in early spring and early fall. Trying to keep a KBG lawn green in high temperatures is frustrating. I chase the dog urine with the hose as well but I’m not the only person letting her out in the yard. It repairs itself with time and if I get too many I’ll dig some grass up from an area that’s not as noticeable and patch the dog spots.

    I use Green Max only all year long. I'm in Canada, so we have snow. If the ground isn't frozen, I will fertilize anyway. I run a three week schedule. I fetilize with the rain cycle if I can. I don't weigh it because once you see how much you need, the quatity would be the same. I use a hand spreader set on whatever number it takes to run out as I walk the lawn. I have a huge "domination line" between me and the neighbours. What is great about Green Max is that you can determine the uptake by the lawn greening up. I water every other day in the heat. I don't use a sprinkler because the areas by the hot driveway and hot curb (where people walk on ) need more water. Mow with a sharp blade because it does make a difference when you shred the lawn instead of slice. The shreds dry out and turn brown on the peaks of the blades. Bag the grass clippings so they don't fall between the blades of grass and choke the grass out. Remove debris ASAP so it doesn't choke the grass out. I run KB, Fescue, Perennial Rye mix. when it gets hot, the KB will go a little dormant, but I'm mowing taller then, so you don't see it. One final thing you do need is soil amendment. In an area with less than ideal soil, the uptake from the grass isn't as high. I used powdered Humic/Fulvic acid with powdered seaweed extract. The lawn will then uptake the fertilizer even easier and be more drought resistant. All you need is a Scotts hose end sprayer. Add powder to water, stir, pour in sprayer and apply to lawn. I did this last night just before it rained so I didn't have to water it in.

    • @aroundthehousewithpat31
      @aroundthehousewithpat31 4 місяці тому

      Thanks For Your Comment! You are pretty much doing exactly what I do. I’m not even trying to dominate the neighbors. I could cut what I do in half and still have a greener lawn. His lawn is nice it just lacks food. If he would feed it just a few times it would look green. I have put humic acid down in the past but it’s been about 2 seasons since doing that. Like you I used the powdered form and used an ortho hose end sprayer. I do have some but just haven’t thrown it down. Your comment will have me doing so now since you mentioned it. I really didn’t see a difference in my lawn when I was using it but you are right that it helps the lawn with nutrient uptake. I DO NOT DO SOIL TESTING. 😂 I don’t think as a homeowner you need to. I Mow I Feed and I Water. that is it. It has worked for me for almost 40 years and I am staying with what works not to mention it’s easy. ThankYou for watching!

      They are! And the very next night Maggie was sitting on the front porch with me and about a half hour before the sun went down a skunk waddled right across the front lawn in front of us. I had to grab her by her collar so fast. She has such a high prey drive. I’ll have to do a video of her when I take her to the park she runs in. She is fun to watch even if she doesn’t catch anything. Thanks for watching!

    Just proves you have healthy soil! Most fungi can be beneficial in helping laws grow thick and lush. Check out a book called Teaming With Fungi

      Yes! I’m always happy to see mushrooms. They were gone as quickly as they appeared after the sunshine returned but they are definitely a good sign for sure. I will check out that book. Thanks for the information and thanks for watching

    Beautiful home! Just seeded my backyard here in Vegas and have seen great growth despite the hot temperatures but I’ve had to water it more. Used Smart Seed

    No issues applying every month in July and August?

      I do not. I have a sprinkler system so the lawn is well hydrated.

      @@followrobthomas Oh Wow. Your putting me on the spot here. 😂 I would still fertilize but I would dial back the setting on my spreader to maybe 3 and I would only fertilize when there is rain in the forecast and I would only do one application each month. Having irrigation I fertilize on a rolling 3 week timing. If I felt I wasn’t getting enough water I would be out there moving a hose end sprinkler around. I have never had my lawn go dormant in the summer having a cool season lawn. I always did what I had to do with watering to prevent it from going dormant. It definitely is challenging in July and August with no irrigation system and a cool season lawn.

      @@scottttym I guess you will have to remove the valve stem. Seems something is blocking the water flow.

    Its all that super juice that you have been using that are not making them grow.
