Site Visit: Two Chunks of Tyrian Purple discovered in the Excavation of a Roman Bath House (England)
I had the opportunity to visit and take part in the excavation of a Roman Bath House in Carlisle, which may be changing the perceptions of the Northern Frontier of Roman Britain.
In October 2023 while excavating the remains of a Roman Bath House in Carlisle, Northern England, a lump of unused purple dye was discovered in the drainage system of the Roman Building. After months of testing, experts at Newcastle University were able to confirm that the lump was Tyrian Purple, a rare and costly dye associated with the upper echelons of Roman society.
Tyrian purple, which gets its name from the Phoenician city of Tyre, Lebanon, one of the regions it was mass produced, was made from the mucus of the Murex mollusc, a sea snail native to eastern mediterranean shores as well as the seas of Northern Africa and Morocco.
The process of making the dye was time consuming, taking an estimated 12,000 snails to produce just one or two grams of dye. As a result, the dye was worth more than gold and became associated with the upper echelons of society.
This example found in Carlisle, has been branded as being of international significance, and may be the only example of the dye found in this state.
Experts strongly believe this site has strong connections to the Imperial Court of Emperor Septimius Severus due to the quality of the other items which have been discovered on site.
Only time will tell what else this unique site will yeild.

The dog, spotting the creature, ceased it between its teeth, its lips becoming dyed in the process. The Tyrian nymph Turos, who...

I clearly remember purple colours in some few paintings that we ara alowed to see. There’s a whale 🐋 horse various animals and female sex. Also lots of abstract paintings. The video is not as colourful as in my reminds. I will check it this summer. It’s still open but for a rapid in and out of 30min in order to not degrade. I wonder if 20000 or 14000 years ago depending of the painting, if they could have been used the purple of a 🐚 shell or other plants?? There’s is some other caves in the region that still open.

    Great information "Auld Boy"! "The Pillars of Hercules", weren't they also light houses, and old by the time the Romans went that far to the west? The evidence for trade connections between North West Europe and the Mediterranean world, even before the Romans conquest of Britain, seems solid - and is corroborated by a great amount of archeological clues! The old copper and tin mines in Cornwall and Wales have long been ascribed to the Phœnician Atlantic and North Sea trade, by many researchers of the ancient past and archeological finds. It seems like they were all the way up in Scandinavia and Balticum, back in the Bronze Age, trading furs, amber etc. We have plenty of petroglyphs along the places where the coastline was in the bronze age. It seems to have been a very mild period climatically.. ("Fare" is a word for "danger" or "travel" in the Scandinavian countries, to this day..). Original Mediterranean glassware and coins have also been found in the Northern countries in old burial sites etc. I've long heard of findings in the USA, that seems to indicate that someone was even up in the Great Lakes and mining copper, some thousand years ago! I don't know for sure.. There's been so many clues hidden from the official narrative, like megalithic structures and burial mounds. Unfortunately, I'm not a historian, so I haven't theorised about the Mexican (Roman style) aqueducts and evidence of construction in the rainforests, etc.. You're doing a great job 👍🏻

      yes you are right, and its nice to see people like john t koch and barry cunliffe discussing this bronze age trade network which connected the med with the atlantic and north sea. @@auld_boy it’s definitely cryptic imo. The dogs could easily be those appointed guardians to the god the hero is acting for or against. The time written would have had Nordic type traditions happening. The berserker & the wolf men (the word begins with an H but is missing me right now) would undergo transformation at the hands of sidar wielded mostly by women who worked with the “magic”. These men were admirably portrayed to an extent in battle as not fearing death. The practice involves something unmentionable for men to partake in, yet Odin does. Yet they were labeled barbarians. So the potential for the dogs to be woman enchanted warriors fighting for the gods hero of choice, is not a stretch. It would also have been slightly insulting to the position, to say it ate weird stuff crawling on the rocks, because there always seems to be a snobbery towards warriors under this kind of label. Also the Nordic women would be on platforms during the battles where they could wield their “magic” to aid their side. The empire was notorious for propaganda against credible foes. So potentially there’s an association there as to why she would be following. Taking their current day understandings of such things & using them in a creation/discovery narrative for the dye to give the readers an easier time understanding. I personally am the kind of person who if my love was fighting a good fight, I would be at their side (potentially shoving them out of the way too lol) but what was expected socially at the time of writing is kinda up in the air. They did a really good job of removing the importance women held in antiquity lol. I have to give credit where it’s due.

    So basically, we are to listen to someone's translated Greek, this one being yourself, Auld Boy ....and basing beliefs off of what YOU say the document says, while you state their may be errors because you are 'still learning'. On top of that, we are to assume this text you are reading is valid, even though we have never laid eyes on it ourselves and almost all of us have ZERO capability of valudating if it is a) REAL and b) AUTHENTIC. On top of all of THAT .... we are to believe somehow that this is NON-FICTION, even though we know THEATRE 🎭 has been around for a LONG time ... in different versions. SURE. MAKES SO MUCH SENSE ‼️👍‼️😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 Give me a break. People, WAKE UP ‼️‼️‼️

      One: no one is forcing you to listen Two: I’m at intermediate reading level. I can translate it but a more advanced translator may be able to pull more nuance out of it. Three: I’m using a lexicon to give the translation, it’s not my opinion Four: the text is easy to locate..try Google. Five: you state you have never laid eyes on the text and say you have zero capability of validating if it’s real or authentic..that sounds like most documents including the bible. Have you looked at the original text fragments and validated if it’s real or authentic? Six: I never said it’s non fiction. I’m merely giving a translation of the text.

      @@auld_boy Correct, I never said anyone was forcing me to listen, did I ? As for your other points, none of them negate my points because none of "us" know you personally and have no reason to believe you. We would literally need to become fluent in Greek to keep up. As for your statement about the Bible, the documents have been validated by numerous scholars over many, many years, and some of those scholars were Aetheists ....who then converted to Christianity because of their authenticity. Please don't be upset when I am merely helping we the people to think about this from every angle. If you yourself are authentically looking for "the truth" , you won't mind. 🙂 ?

    • @auld_boy
      @auld_boy 2 дні тому

      You stated the issue was having to rely on my translation and that you had to assume the Greek text was valid, without being able to lay eyes on it yourself and having zero capability of evaluating if its real or authentic. Then in your response you say you dont know me personally and therefore have no reason to believe me and that you would have to become fluent in Greek to keep up. However you are happy to rely on other peoples translation of the bible and are happy to rely on other people verifying the original text fragments are authentic for you, and you don't complain about having to be fluent in hebrew or greek to keep up with it. Im also assuming you don't personally know every scholar who has "verified" the original texts..but you are happy to believe what they say without knowing them.

    Such an amazing site. Hadn’t seen its location on the island before this. Love how close to the border it is. I have always felt like something was going on in the north, like trade, that hasn’t yet been identified or established in the archaeology. Their resistance was far too clever to just be chalked off as unruly barbarians who are better off left alone. You also wouldn’t build a guarded border the width of the island for protection if your opponents were not highly formidable. I believe there had to be a trade network out of Scotland. It could have been something like education they offered, not just material goods. But how could you go about finding evidence of something like education in the archaeology records from the Iron Age, especially without knowing what they may have been teaching?

    • @auld_boy
      @auld_boy 3 дні тому

      Im pleased its given you some more context to where the site is located! Its really close to the solway firth as well, which is a big sand flat where the major rivers enter into the sea..so it would certainly make for good access to the open sea and there are many harbour towns in the area. There was also a neolithic axe "factory" in the lakes..a little further south but they have been found in Ireland and right down on the south coast..so trade seems to have been occurring in the area for a long time! The Britons were also located as far north as Dumbarton too, and I have also wondered about the motivation behind building such a wall. The main obstacle is the lack of written records..we can only hope something is uncovered which gives us some concrete evidence. Im really pleased you enjoyed seeing the site and the area. I really enjoyed making this kind of video so Im definitely up for making more if there are any other sites of interest! Thanks for watching and for all the continued support!

    Not sure about "strength of Lugus," but maybe so. In Latin, it could mean something more like "broken walls," which seems like a perfectly fine name for a ruined fortress. Since it was the Romans who named it Luguvalium, perhaps the shortest path to the meaning is the correct one. 🤷‍♂ FWIW, (if Celtic) they say the root (lug) would not be linked to IE / PIE roots for "light," because that doesn't match the observed linguistic patterns.

      Here’s what the source says but I suspect it may be relating to walls too as it was a walled city: “Another type of name is very common in Gaul, though rare in Britain, namely those with a suffix in *-acon, Latinised -dcum, which is added to a personal name to designate an estate belonging to the man in question.1 An example is the Gallo-Roman Juliacum, whence French Juillac, Juille, etc., meaning “ estate of Julius ”. The Romano-British Eburacum (AI., Rav.), York, may be such a form, meaning “ estate of Eburos ”.2 The Celtic adjectival and derivative suffix *-io is used in Gaulish in a similar way ; 3 this is probably to be seen in Britain in Branogenium (Rav. ; Ptolemy has Bpavoyevtov and Bpavvoyeviov, the latter being accepted by Muller but less correct). This looks like a placename derived from Brit. *Branoge7ios, “ Born of the Raven (-God) ”, a common type of Celtic name. So too with Rom. -Brit. Luguvalium (AI. ; var. Luguvallum; Rav. Lagubalium), Carlisle, which, as I have shown elsewhere,4 is probably from a personal name Brit. * Luguualos, “ He whose strength is like (the god) Lugus ”, or “ Strong in (the god) Lugus ”. In still trying to find the other source of his he references which sounds like it gives the breakdown. I’ll update you when I find it!

      I’m also aware many of these places are built on top of Brittonic sites such as York so this castle may (and this is wild speculation on my part) be the original site. They were turning up bits of flint on the Roman dig so the area was clearly inhabited for a long time.. cheers for your insight and thanks for watching.

    The seven stages of LSD trips ( which is freakily true ) is what ken Casey was writing about and practising in his hippie bus. Its also what the Beatles Sgt Pepper concept album was inspired by and the Beatles film The Magical Mystery tour has the seven scenes depicting this circle. Paul was le beast 😊

      Very interesting! It seems there have always been people who have known about this stuff. Like when Im out and about around the stately homes in the area...they have images which tell the same story. Fascinating, Ill have to take another look at the magical mystery tour. My uncle used to plat it a lot and I can remember examining the cover of the album. Cheers for watching and for sharing your insights.

      @@auld_boy Another funny Beatles story is the Paul is Dead conspiracy. The whole thing was based on Paul's ego death on LSD. The old Paul dies and the new Paul is reborn. He was heavily into the occult at the time. I think it got them into some legal trouble over subliminal satanic messages in the USA so it was never publicly admitted but you can check it all out yourself if you have a year or two 😂 If the purple is what I think it is then I should imagine that's the vibe 😉
