Tyrian Purple: Rare Purple Dye Found In A Roman Bath House (Carlisle, England)

- In October 2023 while excavating the remains of a Roman Bath House in Carlisle, Northern England, a lump of unused purple dye was discovered in the drainage system of the Roman Building. After months of testing, experts at Newcastle University were able to confirm that the lump was Tyrian Purple, a rare and costly dye associated with the upper echelons of Roman society.
Tyrian purple, which gets its name from the Phoenician city of Tyre, Lebanon, one of the regions it was mass produced, was made from the mucus of the Murex mollusc, a sea snail native to eastern mediterranean shores as well as the seas of Northern Africa and Morocco.
The process of making the dye was time consuming, taking an estimated 12,000 snails to produce just one or two grams of dye. As a result, the dye was worth more than gold and became associated with the upper echelons of society.
This example found in Carlisle, has been branded as being of international significance, and may be the only example of the dye found in this state.
Experts strongly believe this site has strong connections to the Imperial Court of Emperor Septimius Severus due to the quality of the other items which have been discovered on site.
This video presents all the findings.
Taking us there and volunteering! That's amazing! Crack open that Dioscurides.
Thank you Aion! I hope you enjoy it once it’s done. That Dioscorides text is one of the most interesting things I’ve read!
Sweet!
Cheers mate, hope you are well!
I believe Crete has a pre Roman mollusk farm for mass production of the purples main ingredient. Definitely worth adding to the history of its importance. 🤘🥰💗
Thanks Kari, that will come in handy…I’ll be doing a mini series on the subject..looking at the history and uses etc..hopefully I can secure some guests too! Thanks for watching and for the info👌
@@auld_boy this is exciting! Have a blast 💯
@@kariannecrysler640 thanks Kari. I’m lucky that the site is only 40 mins away from my parents so I could go spend a couple days on site. I hope I do it justice for you all 🤞
@@auld_boy 💗 you are 💯
@@auld_boywhat a great opportunity for you!!! Parents and archaeological research in one trek

OMG! I am so excited for you and your upcoming endeavor. As always, thank you for your scholarship.
Thank you so much. It’s so close to home I figured I could try get some footage and make an episode for you and everyone else who are interested. I was so happy they said I could visit and film…and it’s great for me to be able to show off some of my native territory! Thanks for all the support.
What a find. Very excited to see your filming of the site. Big respect for volunteering!
Thank you! It’s a pretty exciting find..and im really looking forward to visiting and volunteering. I hope all is good with you mate 👍
A chunk of Tyrian purple found in the drainage system! I'll bet someone was pretty miffed about losing that.
Or it was the last bath that someone ever took 😅
Thanks for watching!
Tyre the island made peninsula by alexander. Purple was one of the words on the first pages of the decoded herculanium carbonized scrolls from the pompei explosion
Yes πορφύρας / porphuras if memory serves. Compare to welsh porffor..I love seeing route words cropping up elsewhere.
Lots more to uncover in those scrolls..exciting stuff.
Thanks for watching and for the info 👌
Was it not drugs they used purple?or something to that nature...
Most interesting. Very well composed that, Auld Boy, very concise presentation and the editing was slick, unnoticeable in the best way, simple, clear and effective. Aye, seamless that, well done... have a fine time at that dig!
Thank you mate! I’ve tried to take on board all feedback and constructive criticisms as well as your guidance and editing tips too..so thank you so much! I’m halfway through your recent series..I’ll finish it off tonight and will leave some comments 😊👌
@@auld_boy Pleasure, it shows, really does, flawless that one. I liked the straight talking to camera too by the way - literally "straight up".
There are a few things in that talk, in the little section where I was trying to illustrate the boundaries of our knowledge and used examples in history that I would have liked to have framed a little more concisely, was annoying that that Hancock Vs Dibble JRE came on the week before I released that so it sounded then like I was paraphrasing Graham Hancock, I'd have preferred that wasn't the way that landed, but, can't have it all our own way. ...And with that said the old rascal is admirable in his old-skool hippy irreverence. 😉
@@JesseP.Watson thank you mate!
I didn’t think you were paraphrasing graham Hancock at all. I think you clearly come across as being open minded and are asking completely objective questions..which most people cant. You’ve certainly had a really interesting life too 👌
@@auld_boy Good to hear, cheers dude, aye.
@@JesseP.WatsonI’m not a fan of Hancock so I don’t think I would ever confer such things with your work
There’s a difference between true research and parroting a controlled narrative which is what sets you and Auld Boy apart I enjoy listening to people who are truly passionate about their work
Definitely better than what you'd find in the pipes under my 'bathhouse'!
Also, I thought the masks were bookends 😉.
haha yes same here, nothing that interesting at all! The masks are quite unusual aren't they, Ive not really seen anything like them before!
Looking forward to your video visit at the bath site! I hope it will be fun for you. Seems odd there was such a large amount of Tyrian purple there, but I guess though it was remote, it wasn't really a backwater.
Thank you mate, im there on monday and tuesday. Ill obviously need to edit the video together which may take some time but Ill do some live streams when Im there too. Yes its made out to be a bit of a backwater place in the past due to its remoteness, but thats finally changing, especially with these discoveries at the site!
Thank you so much for this,Dr ammon sent me over here❤ not disappointed, you have one more subscriber
Hi there, thats great to hear you found your way here through Ammon. Thanks for subscribing and I hope you enjoy the videos!
There is something to this mystery I can feel i t. I worked my way back here from your newer videos. Don't forget "Tyre" (many spellings), as in the city of Tyre, means (stone), so Tyrian purple could mean purple stone. cheers from the Carlisle across the pond Carlyle, Illinois USA.
That’s great to hear you have been working your way back through. I’m pleased you are enjoying the videos. Thanks a lot for the info. I’ll certainly bare that in mind! Great to hear there is a Carlyle across the pond too! Cheers for watching and for the info 😊👌
Here from doc Ammon giving you a shout out! Trying to understand this purple thing!

@@rsmith7994 as one of his students, he was very encouraging of me to visit the site as it was close by to where I live. He has been very supportive of me sharing this work and inviting me onto his channel and he encourages me to continue making more videos on this subject.
I like this, like a news update for truthers. The editing makes it catchy too. Good job man!! And wooowww thats awesome you get to actually visit the site!!
Ah thank you mate, I’m pleased you liked it. And thanks for the feedback about the editing. I’ve been taking on board all feedback so I’m pleased it’s working. I’m looking forward to visiting..it’s the area I was born and grew up so it’s nice to be able to show some of my native territory! Thanks again for watching.
Do a video about it in drug/medicinal use please.
I definitely will do, pleased to hear you are interested in this side of things. Cheers for watching.
I second the medical.
Well done! Think we also have to remember Julia Domna was already extremely high ranking priestess daughter of Julius Bassianus High priest of Baal of the Emesene holy family. Picked up a gem of a book couple years ago in Jericho oxford of all places" hidden women of the roman empire" it describes her foundation of wanting to merge pagan beliefs and traditions at the time to one monotheistic sun worship. She was after all daughter of priest kings of the temple Elagabalus. An inspiring marriage to Septimus conveniently fortold. The rest is history, they came along way. Interestingly royal family of Emesa, now Homs the original centre of worship for the Sun God El Gabal Arabic llah . Least we forget the holy stone Baetyl.. I wondered once if those special shells may once have been found around the holy islands up north 🙂
Thanks, I’m pleased you enjoyed this one. I’ve not looked into Julia Domna too much yet but she definitely seems to have had an interesting life. Thanks for all the info and the book recommendation. It will certainly come in handy.
I have found books on the sea life of Britain and there are snails which give off the purple..one was a dog whelk if memory serves.
Thanks again for watching and for the information!
@@auld_boy looking forward to hearing more 🙂
One has to wonder if the blue clay found on Oak Island is the actual treasure ,,, or Edgar Cayce's Lapis Linguis is Maya Blue? 🤔 Was it used for visions? Linguis, an old word for Linen. Anil for the blue. Polygorskite is linen fiber like ,,, both found in Bisbee, Az.
Sounds really interesting, Ill have to have a look. Im not too knowledgeable in the area unfortunately. Thanks for giving me another thread to follow!
💪😎
Thank you Kacper!
Dropped down the bogs after getting caught no doubt haha
Haha yes..a quick flush to hide the evidence no doubt. Cheers for watching!
Yes, I was right. Carlisle, Roman bath, ordered by Septimius Severus. African builders.
@@badfairy9554 they think it might be connected to his imperial court for a few reasons: the imperial stamped tiles, the money being spent on its construction and the quality of the items found there. They also found an inscription to Julia Domna and the head archaeologist which I interviewed said there was also a literary account which puts him in Carlisle (known as Luguvalum at the time) which is:
“On another occasion, when he was returning to his nearest quarters from an inspection of the wall at Luguvallum164 in Britain, at a time when he had not only proved victorious but had concluded a perpetual peace, just as he was wondering what omen would present itself, an Ethiopian soldier, who was famous among buffoons and always a notable jester, met him with a garland of cypress-boughs. 5 And when Severus in a rage ordered that the man be removed from his sight, troubled as he was by the man's ominous colour and the ominous nature of the garland, the Ethiopian by way of jest cried, it is said, "You have been all things,165 you have conquered all things, now, O conqueror, be a god."

The Life of Septimius Severus
The construction is in Romano British style, so it seems it was the locals romanised celts who constructed the site. I visited the site and interviewed the head archaeologist on a subsequent video of you are interested. I hope that helps 👍
@@auld_boy I went looking for your video. I enjoyed it alot. Also I found Severus's coins on E-bay. That was a WTF, moment. People do like him. Julia and Septimius were like rock stars I think. thanks for the video, bye for now.
Brilliant news that you’ve got permission to film and interview. So exciting. Hope you enjoy the dig too.
Thank you Suzy, I’m pleased it’s of interest. I’m really looking forward to it!
Thanks for the inspiration to go forward.
Thank you for taking the time to watch. I appreciate it 🍷

10km near home they open the cave only to see 2 paintings. In order to not degrade.. I remember clearly ( I went 5times at least, didn’t remember when I was child but my father showed me too) clearly there was purple. A painting of a 🐋whale, female sex.. and abstract paintings like points and the famous horses and bison there is a lot of purple in my memory ( that image is not the same as the eyes see) . So many people entering every 1/2h. The outside of the cave is boarded by a river and the other side 1km if you walk above is the ocean… Cuevas de Tito Bustillo discovered in e70’s in Ribadesella Asturias. I wonder if 18000 or 14000 for painting they have been used the purple ? I will return to check this summer but I am almost sure…
