    Noticed Ammon lost some viewers from his Greek class from the first to his second episode. I would encourage the creation of a practical ancient Greek 101 class that focuses on reading and pronunciation: with limited focus on defining parts of speech. Ammon’s class is 400 level, but most folks need to see one word, pronounce it, and then build from there with limited reference to calling out complex part-of-speech references because most folks who only think in 2 dimensions. I love what you’re doing!!! But great academics like yourself process language much differently than 99.9 percent of the population.

      Hey Roger, thanks for the feedback and the suggestion. The Greek is tough but rewarding and it does require dedication. The Hansen and Quinn is an excellent course and I still refer back to it as a kind of handbook. I completely understand what you are saying, Im on the spectrum and seem to have an affinity for language. I wonder if the the part of "only begotten" could actually be "self begotten" or "self born"? I've heard these used many times, a quick search shows: T he Holy Book of the Great Invisible Spirit,, a Sethian Gnostic text says "The great self-begotten living Word also appears, the son of the great Christ and the silence, who is the true god and the unborn physis. "... And Ephesians 4:24 seems close, but Svayambhu (self-born) is used for the Hindu Brahma and Vishnu., and like the gnostic text this also has to do with a creator god known as Vāgīśa (Lord of Speech),.

      As for the Gods, they use a lot of analogy. If you read the Chaldean Oracles and Iamblichus on the mysteries etc then its seems apparent that they are describing forces of nature. Some did see this as a realm of punishment.

      Its just a translation of the passage. Medea is basically preparing a drug in the murex shell and I looking at the definitions of some of the words to help pull out some more nuance eg the word for 'night roamer" is an epithet of figures such as Zagreus..so back into the realm of bacchic wirship. @@auld_boy Ok i discovered your channle this morning and I'm very intrigued. I'd love to know more about what calling the drug promethean means. I assume it means that taking it makes you steal the 'fire' (wisdom or power) of the gods. And how is this potion used in the story? Could you also do an interpretation of Medeas defeat of Talos, that one always felt to me that there is a hidden meaning. Lastly, I also hope you do more on Medea and her killing of Jasons wife and children with poisoned garments. Wasnt there a poisoned royal cloak? That evokes the purple dye, as purple is the classic colour of royal cloaks.

    • @auld_boy
      @auld_boy  3 місяці тому +2

      @@umwha that’s great to hear you recently discovered the channel. It’s good to see you watching and thinking about the videos.
      I’ll put out a translation of Apollonius Prometheus bound as it might help it make more sense. Basically in the text Prometheus steals the “fire” from the Gods and conceals it in a fennel stalk. So the fire is a metaphor and is probably named due to the fact it is caustic..like how the burning purple is described. The word used to describe how Prometheus “shaped” man from the earth is actually a word which means “to shape by education”. Which once again adds to the metaphor of the fire. It’s knowledge of a plant medicine from what I discern from the text. Hope that helps.
      Edit: yes of course I can certainly do more translations..it’s good to know what interests people so thanks for the recommendations 👍

    • @umwha
      @umwha 3 місяці тому

      @@auld_boy He hid it in a fennel stalk? Hmm is there some drug quality of fennel? Herblore does seem to be at the root of many mythologies. One that i also recommend you use for a video is the Egyptian Lettuce that is involved with Set and Horus. Horus ejaculated on sets lettuce basically and somehow this creates the sun disk and Thoth . On Wikipedia o gather that this is because the lettuce plant produces a white latex which looks like jizz and was believed to be an aphrodisiac . Why one god covertly jizzed on sets lettuce and why it creates beings beats me though. I also find this weird considering Horus and set are the great hero and villian of Egyptian mythology and Horus later kills set.

    So basically, we are to listen to someone's translated Greek, this one being yourself, Auld Boy ....and basing beliefs off of what YOU say the document says, while you state their may be errors because you are 'still learning'.
    On top of that, we are to assume this text you are reading is valid, even though we have never laid eyes on it ourselves and almost all of us have ZERO capability of valudating if it is a) REAL and b) AUTHENTIC.
    On top of all of THAT .... we are to believe somehow that this is NON-FICTION, even though we know THEATRE 🎭 has been around for a LONG time ... in different versions.
    SURE. MAKES SO MUCH SENSE ‼️👍‼️😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫
    Give me a break.
    People, WAKE UP ‼️‼️‼️

      One: no one is forcing you to listen
      Two: I’m at intermediate reading level. I can translate it but a more advanced translator may be able to pull more nuance out of it.
      Three: I’m using a lexicon to give the translation, it’s not my opinion
      Four: the text is easy to locate..try Google.
      Five: you state you have never laid eyes on the text and say you have zero capability of validating if it’s real or authentic..that sounds like most documents including the bible. Have you looked at the original text fragments and validated if it’s real or authentic?
      Six: I never said it’s non fiction. I’m merely giving a translation of the text.

      @@auld_boy Correct, I never said anyone was forcing me to listen, did I ?
      As for your other points, none of them negate my points because none of "us" know you personally and have no reason to believe you. We would literally need to become fluent in Greek to keep up.
      As for your statement about the Bible, the documents have been validated by numerous scholars over many, many years, and some of those scholars were Aetheists ....who then converted to Christianity because of their authenticity.
      Please don't be upset when I am merely helping we the people to think about this from every angle. If you yourself are authentically looking for "the truth" , you won't mind. 🙂 ?

    • @auld_boy

      You stated the issue was having to rely on my translation and that you had to assume the Greek text was valid, without being able to lay eyes on it yourself and having zero capability of evaluating if its real or authentic. Then in your response you say you dont know me personally and therefore have no reason to believe me and that you would have to become fluent in Greek to keep up.
      However you are happy to rely on other peoples translation of the bible and are happy to rely on other people verifying the original text fragments are authentic for you, and you don't complain about having to be fluent in hebrew or greek to keep up with it. Im also assuming you don't personally know every scholar who has "verified" the original texts..but you are happy to believe what they say without knowing them.

    The "only begotten" leader/"once and future king/queen" with 12 assistants/hand-maids is classic Astrotheological symbolism used the world over from the NT to the Arthur Myths, which represents the Leader as the Sun and the assistants as the Houses of the Zodiac. Anything with 7s and 12s will almost always have some sort of astral association to make the characters seem more "special", than ordinary folks.
