Kershaw Cargo edge retention testing issues. The large thumb studs and short blade height won't allow for a sharpening angle lower than 18 dps. Add to that the blade is already thick at .030 bte and I don't think I'll do any testing on this one. Contact me at gdniel@yahoo.com As always I appreciate your time and thanks for watching.

If I use a cheap steel knife on a drag through knife sharpener, it’s sharpens like a razors edge hard steel knife, drag through sharpener doesn’t sharpen explain that one
A lot of effort for a ten dollar knife. 😄
At this point, I've totally given up on Artisan/CJRB. I've been collecting for over 30 years now and have owned knives from so many different brands... and no brand has consistently given me lemon after lemon like Artisan. I'm not exaggerating at all. SEVEN attempts at buying a knife from this brand broken down: 1. CJRB Riff - had such a weak plunge lock spring that I could hold it upside down by the handle, give it a little wiggle and the blade would just fall out.. so I returned it for 2. CJRB Riff - the second one was a little better, could be held upside down by the handle and the blade wouldn't drop, but if picked up by the blade while close, it would open - returned for my money back... 3. CJRB Version - bought this one the day it was made available. I was excited to check it out when I got it so I did what most people do when they get a new knife - flicked the blade open to have a look at it - and... blood everywhere. The G10 scales were so poorly fit to the aluminum frame/bolsters that the aluminum created four needle sharp protrusions that absolutely shredded my hand open just from one flick. Upon closer inspection, I saw the huge gaps between the scales and frame/bolster. I returned to CJRB immediately and received.. 4. CJRB Version - before opening this one, I felt around the back of the knife to ensure that I wouldn't have any nasty surprises - I could feel four sharp points but they weren't nearly as bad as the first knife that I received. I flicked it open and noticed that the plunge spring was extremely stiff. Not a big deal, it would break in I told myself... lockup was solid - so I started visually inspecting the knife - horrible scale to frame/bolster fitment left 4 gaps of varying sizes and sharp points all around the handle so I decided to try one more time because I liked what the knife was trying to be... 5. CJRB Version - Ack! My third attempt at owning a Version and once again, horrible fit and finish - sharp edges and wide gaps of varying size between the scales and frame/bolster - but now a super weak plunge lock spring and much much worse - super uneven edge grinds! The tip was actually rounded over a bit and the stonewashed finish was ground off about .10". I gave up and returned it for a refund... I thought I was done at this point, but kept hearing about how great some of their knives are so I decided to give a newer model a try.. so I picked up a brand new... 6. CJRB Pyrite Light - I hate FRN... but I figured that it would be "light" given its name. This knife is not as light as it should be. I was actually stunned at how chunky it felt for an FRN knife - upon closer inspection I spotted the culprit - zero machining done on the full length steel liners to lighten them... what??? Why??? It seems like the only thing "light" about this knife is the amount of work that Artisan put into it. Besides my problem with the actual design itself though, the knife had no QC issues... I kept it but I don't really like it. This knife is sooooo overrated. In a final attempt to try to find a knife from this company that I like, I decided to pick up an Artisan Cutlery branded example which led me to... 7. Artisan Cutlery Arroyo - It was on sale for $22.50 on Amazon and was in RPM-9 (which I'm not particularly hyped about, I just have too many D2 blades). So... I flip it open... and what do I see... HORRIBLE... HORRIBLY uneven edge grinds! On one side, it's so bad that there's actually a clearly visible line on one side about .5" from the tip of the trailing point where the tip angle is completely different from the rest of the edge. The detent is just bad. It's somehow mushy AND too stiff... don't ask me how... At this point, I just give up... I can't be this unlucky... I've rarely had to return any knife in all of my years of collecting... I have to say it - CJRB sucks... 7 attempts (6 too many) and 7 failures... I know that CJRB fanboys will come out of the woodworks to defend them - but this has been my actual experience with this brand. I'm not going to waste anymore time with them. I've given them more than enough chances... I REALLY wanted to get a decent Version because I like the design a lot - but 3 bad ones in a row was just too much.
Love, love spy27 for how sharp it can get and how easy it strops back to that same sharpness. And it sharpens soo nice.
I agree
4:05 id take a dozen for 70 bucks each 5 years later
Oh noes!! If my Ozark Trail develops problems, I might have to spend $10 to get a new one? Whatever shall I do? I KNEW I should have bought that $500 knife.
These commenters don’t understand the point of this video. You probably like the knife a lot. You probably love the knife for its positive impact on the community availability of d2 and axis lock for such a good price. You’re simply sharing your object findings that the knife has mechanical issues that may hamper its long term use and longevity. You’re probably wanting to promote discourse in the community to raise awareness and help fix this problem or have Walmart fix these issues. You took the time to take the knife apart and sharpen the damn thing 8 times. THANK YOU BRO. YOUR WORK IS IMPORTANT. WE NEED TO LET WALMART KNOW WHAT WE THINK. KEEP IT UP. MAYBE THEY COME OUT WITH A $15 KNIFE AND IT FIXED EVERYTHING.
I dont understand why you nit pick this knife. Its a 10 dollar knife ==what do you expect. throw it away and get another one or buy a better made knife. just my thoughts.
I don't understand why you have a problem with someone taking apart their knife and examining it because he thought something was wrong with it. He didn't bash the knife, didn't tell you to buy it or not to buy it. No bias in his video. And your "buy, throw away and buy a new one" mentality is exactly why there's so much sh*t in the landfill and oceans.
Haven’t watched the video and the answer is yes. It’s definitely worth $10. Love my bugout more but will definitely carry the ozark at work to save my m390
My s45vn para3 edge lasted for 2 years before I needed to touch it up on ceramic. Mostly cardboard cutting. Very sharp and good retention!
I just got one and now the clip is reversible for left hand carry.
Great Assessment. I have many cold steel knives in Aus10 and they are beast and hold up very well! Love the steel and got the Shark in Aus10 because I wanted to try it and it is one of my favorite knives to carry, it just works. But I think it is overpriced. I think it should be priced at $100 or less. That being said the consumer sets the price by buying them. I can get some well made knives for less than $100 -Civivi Vision in Nitro V and Cold Steel Karve in Aus10 are great knives with similar locks. For less than $150 the Cold Steel Engage in S35VN is a beast and a great value with Atlas Lock, a similar lock up.
ITS A $10 D2 KNIFE! 😂😂😂 well worth the price.
Hollow grind 🤮. If its toothy its D2
Good video… I can’t believe we’re doing an autopsy on a $10 knife. I can’t believe a $10 wore out…I would take that POS back and get my money back and go buy a bench made for $175 which will last forever…😩😩😩
Except you could buy 17 of these and still spend less than the Benchmade. Not a reasonable solution.
I dumped all my knives. I only carry these budget gems now. Im free. And love it
thx
You're welcome.
Great review, thanks! I love the Para3 in s45vn for of edge retention and sharpenability.I am curious would the new Para 3 in magnacut hold a fine edge longer and would s45vn hold it's working edge longer. I presume that Spyderco will do magtnacut justice as they nailed the heat treatment on their stuff so far. Any chance you might be reviewing it at some time?
sorry, I just saw the Spyderco Mule test in magnacut and it does seem a little better than s45vn but not by much. However that was @62hrc, and I saw claims that the Native 5 Salt is already @64 hrc, so it makes me wonder where they landed on the new para 3
That's hard to say without testing any to see where they ended up. They do vary as well so one may be 62 while another is 64.
Dude, it’s a ten dollar knife. You’re acting like you just dissected a Spyderco and came across cheap QC issues. It’s 10 bucks, not 250. It didn’t ask to go viral. The fact is better than most other 20 dollar knives is why people went googly. Still worth ten bucks. But it really is a buyout clone that is amazing.
what about machetes in 3cr13? is it okay if its made well? quality steel machetes and axes get expensive.
I should do a video about that. I needed a chopper while states away from home and bought a cheap one. It's a 3cr13 deal that was cheap and it's still doing fine. I still use it on my land too see what the limit is.
3cr seems to be pretty tough and corrosion resistant, which is why it's not bad and pretty good for a machete. The edge retention though, is pretty bad and you'll have to sharpen it often. That said, it won't chip. I tried my $20 Kilimanjaro with 3cr on hard eucalyptus wood blocks, and it went through them zero problem. No chips!
Four years later and I had to vigorously sharpen my M4 Super Freek 8 times before I got down to the good steel.
It's too bad because it's a great design.
Hey G, if you are member of the Millie group on Facebook, i posted a video 2 days ago with my Rex 45 Native Chief. I shaved a steel nail almost to the half and nothing happened. It's still cutting phone book paper without hang Up. Did the same with k390 some week's ago, and k390 took some damage. Rex 45 earned my respect. Greetings from Austria Europe
I did see that video you posted, I enjoyed it. The Rex 45 I have at 67.4 is much better than the softer 65.5 Rex 45 I have. I'm going through some edges on each now to do a video comparison between the two.
Hey triple "F" for 9.99$ there's no issues with it !!! (triple f, fat-fingers-Freddy) . And trim you nails.
I am considering getting a knife from Roman in either S390 or Vancron. I don’t believe I ever saw you post a polished edge Vancron test but from your usage which of those two steel would you lean towards?
Either one will do well, both were close in testing. Let Roman know what your use will be and he will set you up.
@Outpost_76 yeah I figured there wasn’t much difference but I wanted to see if the fine edge Vancron for some reason was much better than the S390. I was looking to get a high hardness tough slicer since I have a Nitrobe77 Turbo already which is great but sometimes the thick blade stock doesn’t feel great when I do something like light food prep when I’m out with my toddlers. Also, I’ve had the edge see some deformation so I wanted to get something higher hardness with more toughness for better edge stability.
If you have average sized hands and you don't use your knives to carve metal with... this knife is da bomb for a larger folder. The Triad Lock system is rock solid and does NOT loosen up as the knife wears in; its design keeps it locked tight. Besides the pocket clip being a bit too large, and the jimping cuts not going all the way through the lock bar (like they do on the Cold Steel Ultimate Hunter), I really like this knife. I have the UH as well and it's a great knife too; lighter, thinner handle, 90 deg. spine (which the AD10 does not have - which is a minus if you want to use a ferro rod with it), and has more open grip room/design. But the AD10 is a smoother action to open & close if that matters to you, it has more heft to it for deep cuts if needed, and is theoretically stronger b/c of the liners. I get that these youtube vids are over-the-top and often border on what most would consider foolish abuse of a knife, and are done for view counts and to show what a blade is capable of in the extreme, but keep in mind what YOU would be using the knife for 99.9% of the time and if it represents a satisfactory tool for you and a good value. For $100 - $150 both the AD10 and the UH completely meet those standards.
How’s TRM’s magnacut?
I haven't had any to use or test yet to be able to have an opinion.
Over all good smooth action. Chippy reprofiled, nailed a continuous bevel. I can get mine scary face shaving sharp. But unfortunately chippy steel. To hard , I think rc is maybe 62 63 not enough time coming off the heat treat. But still a great user friendly knife! Deer skinning fool. Just don't touch bone.. 3v is the best I have all the high end knives . Bark river 3v is bad ass!!!
Mine I can get deadly sharp. Reprofiled the blade convexed, still chippy
I’ve given away a few shuffles so now im feeling better about it.
I’m glad to see those results! The Shuffle II was my first knife from a reputable brand and also the only knife I’ve had where the steel performance was noticeably shitty even as an average person. I loved the knife otherwise so I may have to pick one up again.
So how come i can't look up test results anymore? Ive been watching you for years and now i can't see the results anymore? I was about to donate a knife, but not if i can't lookup the results!?
The Google sheet was lost and I'm slowly making a new one.
I guess im going to have to go through all your videos and collect my own data. Because ive been watching you for years and now i can't even look at the results!? I was about to donate a knife, but not if i can't even look up the results!
Looks good to me (and just ordered a Manix 2 in SPY27 last night actually). Not really paying much attention the steel snob comments below, but this does exactly what I'd want.....holds an edge for an acceptable amount of time but is super easy to bring back. That's what you want in a knife you're going to use. I never use any of my "good" knives to break down cardboard - that's what I have a cheap utility knife for with disposable razor blades (that I have in bulk which I'll never run out of in my lifetime).....so for most day-to-day normal usage that people do (opening Amazon packages, fidgeting, fondling and cutting themselves), this steel should be just fine.
If it's from Walmart, it's a GreatValue.
Wow, for ten bucks that competes pretty well with other cheap knives. Is it hard? Usually D2 can't be heat treated to less than about 60, thankfully. Not very durable but hell, its good enough and chrome carbides can be sharpened on ceramic unlike vanadium or tungsten carbides, which are harder than the stone.
The best steel is the one with the best heat treatment. If you want a great knife, get a custom from someone that knows how to get the most out of steel, but spiderco very rarely disappoints, unlike benchmade or others. Either stick to cheap knives like mora, opinel, civivi that get the job done, but spiderco or a custom for the best heat treatment.
This thing is kinda nice to have a small, sturdy beater. I think I paid like $7 for mine.
Had one of these in 8cr... Same results
There are talks in-between sharpening community that you should use coarser finishes with low level steels. Could you test something like 40 deg, 80/63 microns(180-200 grit)?
40 degrees, ouch.
@@mikafoxx2717 full angle. 20 per side
I work in a 15 dps coarse finish and see how it compares.
@@Outpost_76 thanks
Damn, even bad m390 doesn't do much better than that.
That is pretty nice for that steel !! Thanks for the testing and sharing !!
Nice 👍
I just bought one of those (that is, it just arrived). It's handy. Very slicey factory edge. My S&W is garbage.
Interesting result. Looks fairly thin behind the edge for a budget utility knife.
Ive handled a few newer budget kershaws and the hollowgrind ones are civivi levels thin bte
I do have an old Shuffle that's 5 years old or more that I now need to test and see what the difference is.
Looking forward to the testing. I like those cjrbs.
If you're gonna wait years to review something no need watching your channel.😂
It's good to see you making these testing vids again G! I'm sure that the budget buyers will appreciate this run!
Smith snd Weston makes some tacky knives
Glad you did this dodged a bullet in not buying it.
Its too bad because it's a decent knife outside of the studs and geometry.
