Great video! Honestly, I think the Hasselblad is the best camera ever made, I totally agree with your views on the mystique around it and I also agree that you can get images just as good on other 6 X 6 cameras, but for me it goes beyond just the images, it’s a time piece, an icon and a piece of mechanical excellence which was built before I was here, and more than likely still work long after I’m forgotten about. I have had multiple medium format cameras and they have all been great in their own way, but there is only one camera which I want to pick up in my own time, there is only one camera I’ve ever owned which starts a conversation with strangers, and there is only one camera that makes me feel special every time I’m using it and it is the Hasselblad. Every point I make a subjective but for me, I think the camera is undervalued due to the joy it gives me. I look forward to your next video!
I've had my 503Cx since 1990 and it's been my main camera since then. No issues with it, not been serviced, no regrets and worth more today than what I paid for it. However, I do prefer my Rolleiflex 2.8f for street photography and really close portraits.
The Hassy has the advantage of having many used and new Digital backs, the new ones from Hasselblad even allow the use of the mechanical shutter. So if you one to shoot digital for a particular project, or mix you can carry a single set of lenses.
I have one, they are GREAT cameras, one tip, at 9:53 you MUST pull the latch and let go smoothly, these cameras are NOT made anymore, so we must take care of them 🙂; and avoid as much wear and tear as possible (other than shooting them, if you own one PLEASE use it, they are not just mantle piece ornaments!).
Love to learn from photographers who are not dependent on digital postproduction as a means to an end. Those cameras are readily available on the used market at an affordable price. The cost of lab work is the thing that might put people off. If you grew up with film cameras, it's a part of your DNA. Yes, I would like to learn about the lenses
Noted about learning about the lenses. Maybe I'll make a video. And yes, I am very much a "get it right at the camera" type of photographer and shooting and learning on film is a strong influence behind that. I do branch out a little more in post production these days, but still much less so than average.
Hi, one missing advantage in particular vs some of the fixed lenses is that you can use a Digital back and use the shutter, not just e-shutter. So you can have a hybrid system at a "moderate" cost with a single family of lenses. Clearly an H camera is an alternative too.
Great Review of the Hasselblad 500 C/M. I also own a few of them with the 50mm, 80mm, 150mm and 180mm lens. They are definitely expensive systems but I love the lenses, size and the availability of parts. I have owned the C330 and can say they are great cameras and very little difference in image quality. I will say that I think the Hasselblads are overpriced in today’s market. Unless one is using them in a business or shooting enough film, they will take a long time to lower the cost per shot.
Many thanks great video and even greater images. I have a hassle that 500 CM I wish the parried up with a Godoxs X pro S but I’m struggling to find the right cables to shoot off camera flash. could you help at all? Many thanks 🙏🏻💚

Great this helps a lot. My current biggest questions: if i buy the eyecup viewfinder, does it show the correct way or does that also move left and right inverted? The picture is also upside down, is it not? Thanks
a handy tip, you say you cant cut down light, yes thats half right, I live in Australia, and in our summer, it gets bright, aka EV 13-17 (same as the value on the lens bottom), for ev 14+ USE only asa 100/200 film this saves burnt out negatives (flare/glare), also use the 'pro-shade' or the supplied lens hoods ALWAYS, when the sun is low and ~ 20 Deg. from shooting direction, this is the FLARE zone, avoid it at all costs, also use your mirrorless to meter, set asa corresponding to film in use, and EV. compensation to +2 to emulate film, it takes more light to shoot film (to get good contrasty negs); one other tip, if the sun is bright, use the cloud cover as a natural diffuser, to soften the light.
at 15:10 that is NOT lens flare!!, its a light leak, from the darkslide seal, Don't worry, its only an AUD$60/70 repair, not too bad, considering the name Hasselblad, you can also tell it, by the feel of the slide, it must have resistance!, not feel like taking an egg out of a frying pan with a spatula, if its that easy, the slide seal is going, GET it FIXED!!!!
a WARNING, at 11:26 DONT do this!!, wind the camera FIRST!- the shutter operates off a screw/screwdriver mechanism, it MUST be cocked to prevent jamming it, you can tell by the film counter a little window is by it (on the magazine), and one on the body opposite the one on the mag. it must be WHITE, a pneumonic applies here, white is right, red is dead (film SHOT/body de-cocked), and also watch it when changing backs, white/white is GREAT, RED{body}/white is BAD... take the mag OFF, re-cock, then add it back, all is FINE for shooting (if you don't, it winds a frame without shooting it, aka a BLANK); another process can be done too, for 205fcc, 203 and 2000 series (focal plane bodies), a button is under the winding crank, it is a multi-exposure button it de-couples the shutter cock and film winder, so you can use this when changing mags too.
Do you own a Hasselblad 500CM? Do you prefer another 6X6 camera? Do you think the 500CM is overpriced in today's market? Tell me about it below!
GReat tutorial, and I loved the portraits.
I have owned two of these and will never part with the one I have now.
@@thomascochrane4922 I will never get rid of mine!
Sorry, I cannot follow you because I already did 😂 what a wonderful camera pleasure to watch
Thanks! Yeah, You Tube only lets you follow once. lol
Nice video! I bought 503CX 'bout two years ago and never stop love this beauty
Right on! Thanks for the kind words!

Good point! Since it was a beginners video I didn’t want to overwhelm people with digital backs. Start with the basics.
You can not only remove the winding knob, you can change it for a crank or a knob with an exposure meter.
Very cool. I've never tried it.

If it doesn't have a prism finder on it, it's going to be backwards. If it has a mirror in it, it will not be upside down.
