    You win by surviving, getting loot and magic and enough experience points to level up. This whole "story telling" thing is not part of original role playing games. That was only added on within the last 10 years or so, along with all the baby-gamers who need their characters to be indestructible super powered creatures because they can't stand the thought of their pc dying due to bad decision making skills. There are millions of us gamers out here who still enjoy the old school, *original* role-playing options.

    Artificers might still enjoy studying the -radioactive- magical decay and the -mutations- anomalous effects it can cause. It's all in good fun, a post-apocalyptic fantasy setting where magic is now cancerous could be a great survival setting.

    Have you tried Numenéra or any other of the Monte Cook games? Cypher System has a great balance between rules light and rules heavy since it's very easy to tweak to your liking with many integrated optional rules for different genres across many books.

    Havens are an excellent example of the maxim, “mechanics support the fantasy”. This is something that Free League, Modiphius, and Cubicle7 really understand in contrast to some…other, larger RPG publishers.

      100%. I like D&D but it really doesn't give a DM much more than a D20 and some modifiers - that's a great framework to build lots of interesting things but sometimes you don't want to be a game designer, you want to be a game master. I've had really good experiences with C7 products and PbtA games in that regard, and when I do play D&D those experiences make me a better DM (and sometime wish I was playing those other games lol).

    Late to seeing this but Wrath & Glory is hands down my favorite system of all ttrpgs talking purely mechanically. My main complaint about it is it being 40k coded even though I love 40k. Mostly because I'd love to have a similar system for Warhammer Fantasy or a generic system to apply to any setting I please (a bit like genesis from fantasy flight games). I love the tiers of play clearly denoting the tone and power level of a campaign, getting XP every session to represent incremental growth, and the numerous ways to customize and live out almost any character idea you'd like! Not to mention how good dice pools feel, there is also the fun of the campaign deck from the OG version, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Wrath to make narrative declarations!!

    • @polyhedron3386
      @polyhedron3386 18 днів тому

      Yep I'd love to see a generic version of the system. They seem to be standardizing on the system that powers Soulbound though, which they are calling the C7d6 system. It's similar but different. I do think that if you like the W&G system you'll like the Soulbound one as well. Their latest game The Laundry uses the Soulbound system pretty much exactly.

    I started GMing because I'm the one who bought the box and that was when UA-cam didn't exist. I got the rules wrong, I was a bad GM and we had a blast. People forget this hobby existed long before there was a way to compare yourself to others online. It's easier than it looks and it's a ton of fun.

    • @jimjones7980

      My first RPG was a half remembered amalgamation of rules from watching older kids play first edition Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. I had just moved to a new state and my new neighbors were camping out in the pop-up trailer they were airing out and invited me to join them. We got bored during the night and it was hard to sleep because it was hot and muggy in Georgia in the Summer. We scrounged around and found two six sided dice in a drawer, a couple of pencils, and some graph paper. I asked the brothers that I was staying with if they had ever heard of Dungeons and Dragons and after I explained what I kind of remembered about it. I had them create characters while I drew up a dungeon to run them through. We stayed up all night playing and it was a blast. They were so excited that they couldn't stop telling their parents about it. Then their parents asked my parents about it and I had to explain it to them and that I had just made up the rules from what I remembered. My dad asked some of the soldiers in his platoon about it and they said that the local post exchange had a copy of something called Red Box Basic Dungeons and Dragons that he picked up for my birthday. After that, we were on our way and I've been GMing and playing role playing games off and on (with some gaps longer than other) for close to forty years now.

    Genuinely I'm begging new players to *not* start with d&d5e or d&d in general. You will get trapped with arguably the most incurious part of the ttrpg scene, the kinds of people that refuse to ever even think about playing more games. Imagine getting into videogames and falling into a crowd that only plays call of duty and refuses that games can or should do anything else.

    • @polyhedron3386
      @polyhedron3386 18 днів тому

      Yeah I get what you're saying. I think that in some cases though, it's either D&D or nothing for many people. A lot of people will start playing because they have a buddy who plays and takes them in, rather them seeking it out. If you are interested in TTRPGs and you are seeking out a game, then yes I agree - don't start with D&D, try something else first, and at the very least it will give you the perspective of D&D as just another system, not the ONLY system.

    My big question is, does the combat feel tactical without a grid? like, do decisions made in combat feel like they are the dominant contributor to success in combat? or is it more just the dice deciding things? I really enjoy gridless systems, but I have found that beyond basics like focus fire, there often isn't much to think about tactically. That works at tables where all the players are happy to put all their brainpower into coming up with descriptions and dialogue during combat to express their characters, but whenever I have players that I know want to engage with game mechanics primarily during combat, I break out the grid systems. would 13th age provide a tactical experience for them without me having to prep detailed battlemaps with engaging terrain?

    • @polyhedron3386
      @polyhedron3386 2 місяці тому

      It’s definitely not as tactical as something like Pathfinder but yeah combat can get pretty intense. You need to be smart about resource management, movement, and usually each class has their own little mini game going. You can definitely make better decisions to get better results.

    I am currently running this campaign. To make the PCs care about the scenario, 2 are from Balder's Gate (one a member of the Flaming Fist, another a bard from the upper city), 1 a druid from the nearby Cloakwood, and also made Reya a PC (I've had a a few players start and stay with the campaign, a few left early, and a few came in later--hence Reya as a PC). Another hook is that one of the PCs unaffiliated with BG or Elturel is a Paladin of Bahamut, so that has worked nicely to hook him to the Tiamat cultists and then Tiamat and her minions in Avernus. They are currently level 9 and searching a wrecked flying fortress and the players seem to all be aving a good time.

    I'm incredibly frustrated with how complicated the character creation process is in 13th age. This game is supposed to be suitable for players of any experience level, but then the very first thing the system wants them to do is this confusing. Thank you for making this video, it will be very helpful to me when I eventually need to walk some players through all of this.

    I was going to comment on the changes you made to the module for your group- then you said the quiet part out loud. You like other systems because you’re there to tell a story, not play a game (5e). More people need to branch out like that. D&D isn’t the only game in town, Avernus won’t fit every group.

    I play with people who refuse to try anything other than 3.0/3.5. I own a good portion of the 13th Age books and have run it a few times, and it's by far one of my favorite fantasy RPGs due to the flexibility in character creation and how it has a decent amount of mechanics but plays so much like a rules-light game.
