I play D&D and Ironsworn with my 9yo daughter. She prefers Ironsworn, hands down. She LOVES the improv nature of the system. As video said "create the story as you go". First. You don't get XP by killing enemies here, but only by "fulfilling vows" or completing quests. Second. For anyone on the fence. Just download the FREE core rules, and start playing. It is amazing how smooth this game runs!!! I have a Solo and a CoOp campaign with my DD. Cheers!!!

I just discovered the game a couple days ago and the worst thing about Ironsworn is how the lack of a need for a group or a DM means nothing stops me from coming back to the table every hour or so. XD Seriously this is the kind of experience I've been looking for. I'm not anti-social its just how many times have you been like I really want to play D&D or something but no one is available right now? Other games have solo or 1-on-1 as a tacked on extra often heavily tweaked by fans. This one is built from the ground up with that kind of play in mind and its awesome.

I'm someone who is completely new to tabletop rpgs. I've been interested in the genre for a long time but never got to play, mostly because it always felt a bit too overwhelming both learning and being forced to simultaneously teach my friends and play with them as complete newbies. I always felt that it wouldnt be a good experience.
Ironsworn was the game that finally made me take the leap. The fact that its designed for solo play and the mechanics being so simple and easy to get, yet so satisfying really helped!
Currently playing a solo campaign, and I do intend to later DM for a group of friends. Having the chance to play beforehand by myself makes me feel much more confident I'll be able to actually make the game fun for me and for my friends, and hopefully it would be a stepping stone for other more complex systems much later on, when the whole thing doesnt feel so daunting.
Thats something I dont think I could pull off if I was just to jump into D&D from scratch.

Ironsworn is a really _really_ good system. I've only done two coop campaigns but they were both a blast. For another lesser known system that has some very interesting ideas, check out a game called "Lancer". You are basicly mech pilots and when outside your mech its a very ironsworn-esque PbTA style narrative first game, but inside the mechs it plays more like a wargame. Not for everyone, but its a really cool twist on the default concept.

Addendum to after watching: I am consuming different systems in a probably unhealthy speed so I experienced a lot of them, but also never went too deep into most of them, but I sport a quite well curated list of very good roleplaying systems.
For me all systems exist on a spectrum between "complete improv/story-driven" and "complete crunch/mechanics-driven".
For example: FATE lies very far on the Improv-side, since all rules are incredibly flexible. This comes with the downside of a lot of imaginatory load on the players and gms, as well as a very "squishy" world. These systems tend to be rules-light or have a lot of core-mechanics, but few specific or detailing rules. These systems favor drama and cinematic story telling, but get wonky when going into detail too much and often involve a lot of hand-waving. On the other side are games like shadowrun or pathfinder, that have tons of rules with tons of specific cases and the narrative often takes a backseat in specific situation like combat where mechanics are the focus. These games often feel more like simulations, less like movies.
I often put Ironsworn on the more narrative side, but not too far away from the middle, because there are actually a lot of mechanics (like ressource management) that can make it crunchy. Here are my picks for similar games I enjoy a lot:
    - The absolute best comes first: FFG's Star Wars RPG and Genesys RPG. These are amazing and are to me like the big brother to Ironsworn due to their amazing Narrative Dice System that fills the same spot the Action Rolls and Hit Resolution have. It drives the narrative, is very high drama and actually works great as a Solo System. I even hacked FFG SW and Ironsworn together to combine both, so I can play Star Wars with the moves or use the Narrative Dice in Ironsworn. www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/starwarsrpg/
    (My hack: docs.google.com/document/d/1-uNfUWoIGa5lkHJc4-WiINTEENa2IpX7Y-nABpqVFk0/edit?usp=drivesdk)
    - FATE is great for a more improv-heavy feel. Cool dice mechanics and rules, and you can do almost anything. Sits on the rules-light, story-driven side of the spectrum. www.evilhat.com/home/fate-core/
    - Savage Worlds for a more crunchy, war-gamey feel while still being easy to use just like Ironsworn. Lacks some of the dynamic narrative elements the other systems have, but when you want to scratch the more dnd-esc itch, this is a great and much more managable system I really enjoy solo and with a gm. www.peginc.com/product-category/savage-worlds/
    - Suited is a unique game played only with a standard sized poker card deck. I thought the concept was really cool, it also focuses the narrative with light rules and is designed for short sessions and it gives me a similar feel to ironsworn, but maybe not as polished when it comes to narrative driving rules. www.escapeboxgames.com/suited
I am really curious how the solo rpg scene and the ttrpg scene in general evolve because of Ironsworn. I think it displays an aspect of rpg-playing that gets overseen because of the hype of DnD 5e, even though it's right there in the name: Roleplaying. Ironsworn and those other rpgs put the narrative to the front and design rules that support this purpose. Definitely check them out, when you like stuff like Ironsworn.

It might be soloing is mostly popular at the drama/story driven end of the fanbase spectrum. But I've played 5e solo, and know some people who've run similarly simulationist stuff solo, so I think there's no need to hilight a divide here.

I just picked up Ironsworn a few days ago, and am seriously thinking about grabbing the printed cards, and Delve. What I have seen so far I really like, and as I read, I am already getting many ideas for characters, places, etc.
Unfortunately, I do not have a whole lot of free time, so I tend to read about 5- 10 pages or so at a sitting. I hope to be able to play within the next 2 weeks, ha ha.
Since you asked about other games, my choices are all ones that you have probably looked at, but there is one game that I just heard about yesterday which might interest you, called 1,000 Year Old Vampire. I haven't played it yet, but it looks great, and it another game that focuses heavily on the story over everything else.

Ah cool! This video was what motivated me to finally learn and play it. I love D&D, but none of my friends care for it and playing it solo is kind of boring. Ironsworn is s u c h a blast though. I can't tell yet if I'm going to miss the progression and depth of D&D (so many enemies with different moves and stats, ability score increases for the player, different spells and abilities, etc.) yet, but I'm having fun anyway. Thanks for the vid :)

Actually the rulebook is going to be translated into German (open preorder now) and as the English version is free, I am think about just reading the original. How is the rulebook structured and is the language simple and easy to understand or do you think it would be better to read it in your native language? I am looking forward to play this game and if there will be another lockdown, this is the perfect game.

I consider, and label, Ironsworn as a "Storytelling Game"

    • @lenni-hazels
      @lenni-hazels 9 місяців тому

And that's perfectly fine, since everything the moves do is supporting the fiction. The attributes and 3 resources are just a way of adding tension and fail states.
I have played some TTRPGs that are even less rules-heavy and story focused, but they all didn't match the fun i had and still have with Ironsworn.
The game is a well oiled machine that supports theater of mind style story telling very well.

Would you GM an ironsword game? I have been trying to see what that would look like but most uploads look to be coop or solo. I understand the appeal of solo but I would just want to see it with a GM in a mini campaign (like 2-3 sessions instead of a one-shot was my thinking)

i think it would be really hard. most of ironsworn is trying to make a PbtA game completely GM less. Looking at the rulebook, I was thinking of how it would be with a GMA and it ends up like very little for a GM to do maybe...
