Clio's Painting Bench
Приєднався 23 тра 2011
This channel covers miniature building, painting and converting with an ounce of wargaming on the side.
Unfortunately, making miniature painting stuff takes a lot of time due to conceptualisation, modelling and painting (and real life getting in the way), so I hope to make videos every few months or so. I'm still probably alive in the meantime. This might be every three months or something, so check my Instagram for more regular updates!

[1/72 Scale] Designing, Conceptualising and Creating Units - The Process (feat. Sohei Monks & Ronin)
When making units I have an extensive process that is extremely unattractive to anyone normal. In the same way that there is a creative process to work out the visual language, themes and iconography of anything, I do that but unpaid. Weta workshop probably get paid decently to do this, and are respected in the industry, I do the sweatshop equivalent, or the free government legal counsel they give to the serial killer cannibal where they have him on tape. Hey, someone's got to do it. I suspect many people into miniature making have an intuitive process for this, but this is my design methodology laid out exhaustively. The target audience probably numbers in the dozens globally. Whole dozens!

[1/72 Scale] Linear-A - Seleucid Infantry Phalanx Set 1 Review
What an excellent video! More like this would be great.
Thank you! I try to make a variety of content ranging from meme stuff to analytical stuff to guide stuff, there will be more guide stuff at some point!
Great video! Keep it up ❤️
Thank you! Got a great run of content for this drop, I think. I'm quite proud of my next video coming out!
Nice breakdown! You definitely organize your process more than I do. My steps are similar, but it's much more chaotic. With the new players entering the scene, they'll need to know how to get through the planning process, and I have a feeling this video will help them. Now we just have to find a way to get them to see it....
I think many players go through a similar process intuitively, they think what looks nice, what conversions to do, so I'm just formalising what I think many people do anyway. Haha, the chance of people jumping into this field of historicals is quite low, but I've always tried to make content that would have helped me when I was starting. If you build it, they will come.
@@CliosPaintingBench Very true. It's a good thing to codify the process though. You're less likely to miss steps and have to go back and figure something out after the fact. The topics we do are far more esoteric, but I have hope that one day we will see a historicals renaissance.
@@TheCommandBunker At least unit building as a process is system agonistic. Though I use examples from history (I mean quite loosely given that my Sohei and ronin are quite exaggerated) I probably used to think about my units in this way for my Black Templars and Orks and Alpha Legion back in the day. I would love to see more people in our historicals though!
Интересные новые наборы. Особенно монголы.
у нас давно не было новых монгольских наборов, и они полезны для многих различных кампаний. Я надеюсь, что мы увидим элитные войска, лишенные мундиров, которые станут почетным караулом.
What type of armor does the Goryeo military wear?
I'm not an expert on the Goryeo Dynasty, but from my understanding there was far fewer relics available so it's more speculative. Historians believe there was lamellar, chainmail and plate with mail and a form of brigandine, as the armour transitioned from Song-style to Mongol style. Dynasties are groupings of time and transitions take time, so late Goryeo was essentially the same as early Joseon for example
@@CliosPaintingBench What do you call the Durumagi-style armor that the soldiers and marines wore? Is it still brigandine armor?
@@PatrioticKoreanAmerican Yes, it was brigandine, although I think that modern research currently believes that lamellar, chainmail armours were the most common by far, with plate with mail reserved for officers. Brigandine would be seen as exotic barbarian armour learned from the mongols, localised into two-piece to suit local tastes and would have been rare. It could be more common in late Goryeo. I think the comments of 'scales' in the front on the Wikipedia article are questionable. No current Korean historical dramas depict these and they don't exist for Joseon troops. It would seem very unlikely that a form of armour would develop and then disappear immediately in the next dynasty unless it was useless. The scales could have been ceremonial? The comments from the Song Dynasty Envoy could have been remarks for ceremonial armour to make a good impression for him?
Great hype! How are the new resin models?
Oh they're great, super detailed. Also, no sprues to clip away, just undercoat and go. They're a bit more pricy, but it is what it is. I approve of the new direction
Those are some solid upcoming releases. I'm intrigued by Der Hexenhammer as well. Having read Malleus Maleficarum years ago, I'm interested in where they go with that. They could do all sorts of the Witch Hunters themselves, the "interrogation" implements and the "witches" themselves. Where is the 1/72 scale rumor guys leaking the release of the Jesus set? A huge release like that had to have had some signs and portents. It reminds me of the JRPG styled PC game on Steam, Jesus Christ RPG Trilogy. Seriously, that is a thing... and still on Steam.
Haha I heard about the Jesus Christ RPG, sometimes when the market goes niche, the niche makes their move. Who knows, might as well give it a shot. When I think of witch hunters I immediately think of Warhammer, but the reality will probably be less over the top. Still interesting to see!
Dang! How did you know this information? Even lots of Koreans don't know this information!
Yeah it was a combination of my own research using Google translate and talking with amateur Korean historians who helped explain many things, I learned a lot because I was interested and I still check out Joseon military history every now and again
Strawberry is curious and so am I, especially about those model forts and towns. Where are they? Also, did you find any good 1/72 compatible models in Japan that aren't available in Australia? I'll be there in November and plan to do some shopping. BTW, being the only one doing something is great. We need to know more about Asian history and the Imjin War is a good place to start.
Ah, so the miniature forts and towns are from a cultural theme park in Southern China, and I plan to cover it in a future video but as always, my ambitions outweigh my time management haha. There's a lot of stuff I want to make but I have to be selective, but I think I'll get there eventually. I was trying to find unique 1/72 sculpts in Japan too. They have some interesting brass kits that could work as terrain pieces but 1/72 historicals and historical miniatures are not that popular there in general, there's a strong dominance of Gundam kits and such but there are many model stores which are fascinating to walk through. I've kind of resigned myself to the idea that I'll be the person to cover the armies of the Imjin War in English so I'm doing a lot of background research now, but I do want to balance it with more mainstream 1/72 content, so a bit of everything.
@@CliosPaintingBench I recently watched a clip from a film, which showed the huge naval battle between the Koreans and Japanese. Quite a spectacle. Don't know how realistic it was. The ships were stunning and seemed to move on their own.
@@duncanrichardson5306 Could it be Noryang? There's a few Imjin War movies but Noryang is the most recent big budget one which I found very visually impressive, I really liked that movie
@@CliosPaintingBench Yes, that was it. I'd like to see the whole film so I could understand more of what was going on.
@@duncanrichardson5306 Honestly, great film. It's my favourite of the trilogy and it's a watchable movie even if you don't know the context because it's quite straightforward action and characters. I personally love the setting of it but I think even casual audiences would like it
The way you declared your ambush during the deployment phase was interesting. I also do a house rule when placing ambush in turn order instead of rolling off between players.
Turn order makes sense to me, I think the idea of putting ambush in the deployment phase prepares the opponent and gives them time to react- a general good idea
I like your humor and your drive to find the "perfect" Yi Sun-Sin miniature. Maybe you can help me and point me towards decent Joeson Army painting guides (books, websites, etc.) I can use for my miniatures for the Imjin War!? Finding such sources is proving difficult so any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks man! I don't like tooting my own horn but I do have a mid-Joseon army painting guide video right here on my channel where I detail colour schemes, how to model for historical accuracy and army organisation. Honestly, I was having trouble finding it myself which is why I made the guide, which is my collated research. If my video guide doesn't cover it feel free to ask any questions and I could prob answer you, I just don't think you'd find many of the sources helpful (they're all in Korean)
Wow!!!! Thank you so much for your help...and no, you are not tooting your own horn, you are helping me with exactly what I'm looking for!! I will look at it tonight. I'm happy to hear you also include info on army/unit organization. On a related note, you wouldn't also have or know of a painting guide for ships of the Joeson, Ming and Japanese navies as well? Thanks again.
@@vincentstella5131 it's cool, hope you find it useful. I'm not an expert on the navies, but www.youtube.com/@TheCommandBunker has some great painted examples of Imjin War ships on his channel. From my understanding, it's far easier painting the ships, the colour schemes aren't complicated and there are many references of art online (as well as the Admiral Yi Sun Shin movie series) but it's not my field of expertise haha

hodling out for those predator rom coms haha
@@CliosPaintingBench hahahaha Even I might watch one. Actually its so 'diverse' you should write a script and send to Disney. Make sure it s a Predator and a human romance and they are both male. America will love it.
@@alexc6324 The first AVP pioneered the Predator human teamup and it could have gone any number of directions but I dont know who would actually want to watch a rom-com for aliens or predators, unless they're trying to lose money for tax purposes haha. I'm hoping the new alien romulus will be a return to form, I think they're going for a classic Alien 1 approach but you never know with how bad modern movies can be...
Im sorry to comment so much on your video. I normally comment as I watch. So now you are discussing Predator versus Alien. If we are talking about the film world I think that Predator has run its course. The first film was perfect. the others got progressively worse. His face is amazing BUT he is just a big strong humanoid with hi tech. For me this is now boring. Alien is also old hat for me as far as films are concerned. The first and second films were masterpieces. No need to make more. But they always do. If we are talking about wargaming then again for me Predator just doesnt work. Its just a big guy who is difficult to write rules for. BUT The Alien is great for wargaming. I used to love making my own space hulk themed games and I often used homemade Alien counters as a swarm of Aliens on a ship or as a seek and destroy with just a few hidden on the ship. I found that Esci U.S Vietnam war figures were perfect as colonial marines. I could keep track of ammo usage and write rules for detection, ambush, reloading, guns jamming etc. For me Alien is also useful for wargaming because it doesnt really think, its perfect for solo wargaming. just run and attack etc. you can write simple rules for its behaviour. Anyway I ill try to stop commenting now.
Please feel free to comment as much as you want, it's perfectly fine. They're definitely milking the alien and predator franchises now, but film making is a business first and art form second, so it is what it is. I still enjoy watching the sequels, I know they're not masterpieces, but it's a good escape from work haha. I think the Alien is great for wargaming too , I know they made a tabletop wargame at some point (Prodos games) but I think it also went under. Appropriating Vietnam war figures makes a lot of sense, just a repaint and it would be fine. You're right about the solo wargaming, I think the alien setting would work for Space Hulk too... Hmmm...
@@CliosPaintingBench Great. Sometimes I cannot stop myself from commenting. Thanks for your videos. Im looking forward to the next one! Oh and I didnt see in your video, where were you when you filmed that mini fortress and town?
@@alexc6324 I'm going to take a break to recharge before the next big round of content, but I've got big things planned. The introduction for this one was filmed in Malaysia, I think there's a floating Chinese temple among a series of floating docks owned by several families. It's interesting that there were factions of competing rich families struggling for influence, I don't know much about the history but that gets my miniature wargamer side thinking... I think this is Kuala Lumpar floating villages or Jetties. I think.
I forgot to mention in my last comment (I was distracted by the Babe) that I like your videos a lot. Your rambling or scripted speech is all good. You manner of speaking is entertaining to listen to and your videos are always full of interesting or entertaining images. I LOVE videos that show real people doing real things so this episode is very good. Your channel works for me because: 1 your content is what im interested in: 1/72 plastic minis and wargaming 2 your research into subjects is great and something that I myself am too stupid or lazy to do. 3 your painting skill is excellent and although we dont have the same style I like looking at your minis. 4 your scripts are funny. Not always easy to do. There are many channels on youtube that try to be funny but are not. you are. well done. 5 your personality comes through in your videos and you are a likeable guy who would be good to know socially or be stuck in an elevator with. 6 I have confidence that everything you plan to do in the future is going to be interesting to me because you are steeped in Asian culture and I am English and living in Asia but I do not know enough about this part of the world and even if you look into 'western' subjects I am sure that you will notice/learn things that I have missed. 7 Im sure there are other good points about your channel but I cannot remember them now and I am eating an icecream at the same time as writing this. So, its good that you self reflect and question what your doing but please dont change anything too much. What youre doing now works well for me. P.S My wife has forbidden me from using Patreon. I spent too much money on too many channels. :( If this situation changes I will happily Patreon you. 1 video every three months is OK. Quality not quantity is the thing for me.
Thank you very much for the in-depth feedback and praise, I want to stay true to the spirit of why I started the channel and make videos I think would be helpful rather than just get the most views. If I don't enjoy it there's not much point for me doing it either, so glad you like the content!
Wow, what a babe! We need to see her more often. Sijia/Shuju/Suju/Soju, Sam Sam/Strawberry is cute, beautiful (not the same thing), funny and intelligent (I think). She is a great addition to your channel, dont lose her. An S/S/S/S/S/S/S segment in every video would be excellent. Maybe an 'Ask SIjIa' segment would be good. Good work Claire/Clio.
Haha I'll ask her but she doesn't like doing the videos much, took a lot of persuasion
I love the Zveda and Redbox figures for this period.
I think Zvezda's minis are a blessing, they're just great sculpts, very detailed and you get so many. Red Box help complete the range and fill the gaps of things that Zvezda never made. Quite easy and cheap to make a 1/72 army for samurai, and the miniature quality can be excellent
I cant wait. I just got back from Japan yesterday. Me and the wife went to Kamakura and Izu. Many babes everywhere! ;) But the weather was too hot for a fat Englishman.
Oh wow, lucky! A bit of the beaten path, which is nice, get to see some hidden gems. It's quite hot there at the moment, and the humidity doesn't make it easy, it's not as bad as South East Asia but if you're not prepared it can be a shock. Lovely place though, would love to see it again soon!
@@CliosPaintingBench Yes, its nice to see slightly less well known places. I live in Macau so heat and humidity are normal for me but the problem with a hot holiday is my wife insists on me walking up mountains, exploring towns and climbing rocks when at home in Macau i just sit in air conditioned rooms! lol.
@@alexc6324 Ah I was in Macau fairly recently... you've got nice casinos. A lot of them haha. It seems all the attention is on the casinos. Yeah I like towns but to me the reward / effort ratio for hiking is often not there. I don't want to say that all trees and views are the same... but I mean, a tree is a tree and a water view is a water view, it's not like it's any different overseas and I don't want to walk for like 3 hours for one. I don't care. I'm more of a museum person myself
@@CliosPaintingBench I totally agree with you. but my wife...
@@alexc6324 famous words said throughout history haha
An interesting video. In Russia, there is a skilled modeler who makes Japanese Sengoku jodai on a 72 scale. I'll give the name of his video in parentheses. Haha, me too, always wanted to make a samurai guide after seeing nothing comprehensive or historical on UA-cam. Trouble was, painting it has been very difficult, so it's taken time. Labour of love, this one.
I was thinking about this a while back, but with these places like discord and revolt out there, do you think there is a future or a need to create a network group for people interested in the Imjin War and maybe a place to store files or records collectively? Yet again, I look forward to what you've got. I'll have to try some of your ideas on my 10mms in a few weeks.
I did think about it but I found out that Discord is getting rid of its data storage and the only place I think people would be able to be anonymous (because of the, ah, nature of file sharing) and also have file sharing is Telegram and I don't know if that's really for wargamers, it's more associated with Cryptocurrencies and terrorist organisations haha. I'm not one to discourage diversity but that seems to be an odd mix to throw wargaming into and I don't think many wargamers have or would download Telegram anyway. I look forward to seeing your 10mm, I've always been fascinated with the scale. Plus Imjin War is Imjin war, whatever scale it's in
@@CliosPaintingBench I didn't know Discord was getting rid of that. I had been on Guilded for a while and they would have been another good option, but they now make you have a Roblox account to be a member, and honestly that's kind of weird. I hadn't heard about Telegram. That's wild.
@@TheCommandBunker Haha yeah that's super weird, I don't know what the connection is to Roblox, but that's so oddly specific. I think a good community effort would be Facebook but you can't really share files there, there's a lot of people who post Feudal Japanese wargaming stuff and I think that's kind of how you can get a community thing going - I personally share files privately, having public groups with files puts you at risk of legal stuff but if you just want community I think most people do facebook nowadays. I used to be a forum person because I like the format of forum topics - you can kind of have a platform for coexisting project logs and blogs almost but that's fallen out of favour. Also while I love wargaming the Imjin War, I accept that Sengoku Japan is more popular and known as a setting and you kind of have to cannibalise on that for viewership. No one knows Joseon, no one knows Ming, everyone knows Samurai. That's just the state of English-speaking historicals I don't make the rules. But I am trying to change it, in my own small way...
@@CliosPaintingBench I miss the glory days of blogs. I had one for my historicals and another for my fantasy/sci-fi. I might consider at some point going back to that. I've tried to avoid Facebook for the longest time, but maybe I should just bite the bullet and find one for Sengoku. Maybe convert a few of them to the "Best New Wargames Period You've Never Heard Of tm" I think I'd loose my faith in humanity if I saw a youtube video titled that about the Imjin War. Maybe if we could get some more English language writers to do more than 3 or 4 books on the war, we might get some more appreciator's in the West. Or I should just learn Korean since that's where all the juicy details are. lol
@@TheCommandBunker Yeah I love the work people put into blogs but it's definitely a hallmark of a different age. There is a relatively big audience that's gone to Facebook and miniature instagram is a thing as well now. Yeah you really need english sources for accessibility to get that big audience, you can't make it too hard for the average person, not everyone is willing to do the work. It's why Chinese miniatures have been so underlooked - the Ospreys were terrible and nothing has come out since then. To get that audience, what we need is for Osprey to update their series on Chinese armies, make one for Korean armies and that will draw attention. People can't know what to look for if they don't know what exists, it's like a network effect. Samurai are popular exponentially because they were popular before
Do you have any good book recommendations on Korean arms and armour? There's unlimited amounts of stuff on Japan, but very little on Korea
@@Zwerchhau yes! There's a guy called gum_su who makes amazing stuff: x.com/gum_su_/status/1809422035883638879 unfortunately it's all in Korean, but the reference pictures are great. All English sources are outdated by about... 2 to 3 decades?
@@CliosPaintingBench My Korean is at about infant level, but could be something to work toward being able to understand
@Zwerchhau I don't speak or write Korean at all, I rely on Google Translate and the help of interested amateurs, lot of great info online and very knowledgeable people out there, I'm just a messenger
Love it. Quirky custom models, rules that allow you to focus on tactics not remebering obscure abilities, narative, strategic and fun. This is what wargameing should be.
Thanks man! Volund really likes his scratchbuilding, and he makes all kinds of terrain and contraptions using hot glue and household bits. I really like the rules for grimdark future, simple on the surface but the focus is on decision making which is the basis of good gaming
You could really blow some minds if you show up to the club to play Warhammer and whip out Warhammer Ancient Battles.
Haha "Oh you didn't mean Warhammer ancient battles? What do you mean the Romans aren't in 40k? Haven't you seen the ultramarines?" It's pretty wild to think how far Warhammer has come from those days, the historical roots make sense but they've become such a juggernaut, those rulesets are long gone
@@CliosPaintingBench I can't remember for sure, but I think 1st edition WAB was compatible with the Fantasy and to a lesser degree 40k edition of time. I want to say 5th edition Fantasy and 3rd or 4th edition 40k. It would be a serious power move to start posting WAB battle reports. No Speed Freaks, just Scythians! Or Speed Freaks vs Scythians. You don't see that on UA-cam anywhere.
@TheCommandBunker insert "you vs the guy she told you not to worry about" meme lol. It's not personal It's just automatic weapons and vehicles. I don't think I know anyone who'd be willing to do warhammer ancients :p. All the historical guys aren't into warhammer as much as the warhammer guys lol

Need a 2023 vid right now. I love this content
I did think about making it but at the time I was making other stuff or painting a unit and I figured the date had passed at that point. I guess I could always do it now...
@@CliosPaintingBench I am in full support of that. Linear A had some phenomenal releases last year, and I would love to hear a sophisticated opinion on them from a man such as yourself
@ashercroy4982 haha much appreciated, it may take some time to make, the incubation times are longer than some would expect but it's on the list!
These are the videos we need✊🏼 keep up them brotha. Top tier entertainment and finally 1/72 scale is getting the exposure it deserves
Thanks bro, I think 1/72 is a scale that found most of its attention decades ago, so the collectors tend to be older, I'm trying to make the videos entertaining so they're easy watches and hopefully give the scale some exposure
Sorry to resurrect but just watched the vid. Very cool you are playing your old teacher, my Physics teacher set up a wargaming and roleplay club at school which has led to a lifelong hobby for me. Cheers Mr Fell. A gaming club chum just started Basic Impetus hence renewed interest. Happy gamng
Oh no resurrection is done here, that's why the battle reports are recorded so it can live FOREVER. Yeah, very nostalgic to get back to my high school roots that introduced me to 1/72. I'd honestly would never have tried it if it wasn't for that club. 1/72 seems to be a scale that boomed during my teacher's time, so I'm glad to be a part of it now!
Always great fun and very interesting to watch your videos! Yeah I also don't get it how so many cool AND historically accurate/plausable things are being missed by productions. Maybe they do not care to train or find fitting actors for stuff like double swords ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Have you seen The Fortress (Namhansanseong)? It is some decades after the Imjin War but I like the depiction of the Joseon military there. Do you maybe know if and how much the Joseon used old fashioned slings during the Imjin War (like the ones from antiquity)? I see it sometimes and it would make sense that they used them. It is such a underrepresented weapon in general. Anyway thank you for your entertaining videos! :)
Haha there's no way they couldn't just pull one of the performers from the palaces and put them in as an extra, some people like to reenact stuff in their spare time I'm sure they could just grab those guys, they'd probably do it for free. At least modern media is getting better at historical representation. I really like The Fortress, the Qing invasions are relatively recent after the Imjin War and it's a great depiction of the transition into late Joseon, very very accurate stuff there. The transition began DURING the Imjin war so there's a case to be made that a few of the Joseon troops probably fought like that during the late Imjin War, because what happened was that Ming Chinese consultants introduced their military trainers and Joseon immediately attempted to emulate the Chinese style, but obviously it took time to transition, especially during war time. What you see in The Fortress is the system having just transitioned to late Joseon military. Yeah uh actually they did. There was an annual slinging event and during national emergencies they conscripted those guys, here's a link: encykorea.aks.ac.kr/Article/E0028491#:~:text=%EC%A0%95%EC%9D%98-,%EC%9D%8C%EB%A0%A5%20%EC%A0%95%EC%9B%94%20%EB%8C%80%EB%B3%B4%EB%A6%84%EB%82%A0%20%EC%82%AC%EB%9E%8C%EB%93%A4%EC%9D%B4%20%EB%91%90%20%ED%8E%B8%EC%9C%BC%EB%A1%9C%20%EB%82%98%EB%89%98%EC%96%B4%20%EC%84%9C%EB%A1%9C,%EA%B2%A8%EB%A3%A8%EB%8D%98%20%EC%84%B1%EC%9D%B8%EB%82%A8%EC%9E%90%EB%86%80%EC%9D%B4.&text=%EC%9D%8C%EB%A0%A5%20%EC%A0%95%EC%9B%94%20%EB%8C%80%EB%B3%B4%EB%A6%84%EB%82%A0%20%EA%B0%81%20%EC%A7%80%EB%B0%A9,%E4%BE%BF%E6%88%B0)'%EC%9D%B4%EB%9D%BC%EA%B3%A0%20%EC%93%B4%EB%8B%A4.
Good solid info, yet again. Sometime in the near future I'll have to assess the Perry Bro's line up and decide how best to move forward with my 28mm Joseon army. I'm thinking I may just embrace the K-Drama look and go from there. I wonder, if Wargames Atlantic do Joseon, will they do it accurate, or will they just go with the K-Drama references? I'll go back to my ships now, once I get a day off and some rest (I've worked 9 days without a day off and still have a few more to go), I'll record the massive June painting update video. Spoilers... Panokseon's aplenty!
To be honest, I really like the K-drama look, to me it's equivalent to the Oldhammer trend where people are painting their minis to look like they're from 2nd edition, Goblin Green bases, lots of saturated colours, its got its own charm and it takes a lot of effort to convert every trooper (especially if they're metal) so that's understandable. I have a hunch that if Wargames Atlantic do Joseon, which I believe they've expressed interest in, they'll probably do a decent job because their STL range is so creative and decently researched (with some exceptions). Can't wait to see the upcoming video!
Thankyou, I am right now as i type this glueing small round shields and large pointy shields to my REDBOX Korean Heavy infantry. (just the guys with swords) and they look pretty good. Also maybe later I will trim their tridents to spears but im not sure as i think the tridents are cute.
Glad to hear it's helping with your project! Please link me when you've painted, I love seeing Joseon minis! I was quite tempted to keep my tridents too, I liked the look. I ended up only keeping the fish scale armour for my commander because the visuals were too good, but a nice thing about miniature modelling is you can pick and choose how much you adhere to history.
@@CliosPaintingBench Yes I totally agree about choosing how far you adhere to history. My models give me so much pleasure but none of my armies are historically accurate. That said, all my projects reach historical accuracy to an extent that satisfies me. The idea of adding shields to figures is pretty big to me so i wouldnt have thought to do it until I saw your video, thanks. I watched 'kingdom' and loved it but i didnt notice any shields on the soldiers so thankyou again for your video.
@@alexc6324 People care about accuracy to various degrees; my take is, do whatever you like, they're your models. But I do hope to pass on the tools for people to make informed decisions, at least for mid Joseon Koreans. I like that the shields contrast with the Japanese, which didn't use them at this period. Shields were pretty standardised as the front rank of infantry formations and some heavy cavalry also carried them. I should have more but I can't be bothered to freehand that many haha. I could start using rattan shields too and I think I eventually will when I do another unit
@@CliosPaintingBench your knowledge, enthusiasm, sense of humour and skill are all appreciated.
@@alexc6324 Haha, gratitude goes both ways, I appreciate you watching mate, without your comments this video would look like a wasteland!
Thanks. Fun to watch! 1/72 is great for cost. Great variety for the Punic Wars and anything Roman. Do you base for 28mm or 15mm with your 1/72nds?
Thanks mate! Hope to get another game in for Basic Impetus at some point but I'll probably have to provide both armies... I'd love to cover Punic wars and Romans, I have unpainted grey piles for varieties of both, problem is painting all of it takes too much time haha. I base for 15mm with my 1/72 basically because that's how I was taught, but I'm grateful for the lower figure count for each base, but each unit still looks sizeable with 8 in my opinion.
Warlord Games do guided tours of the factory each Friday - it costs £15 and they show you the making of the metal & resin figures. You also get a bunch of freebies - when I went earlier this year I selected the 'Ewarts Eagle' and a sprue of Prussian infantry in Epic scale, plus a couple of other metal figures.
I think they implemented the guided tours after I visited because I did read about the option later but I could be wrong. That Ewart's Eagle exclusive is fantastic, very dynamic pose, hard to get too, great choice
Oh man, the whole financial future of the channel. We 'Imjin Appreciators' have to stick together. Anyway, that Achaemenid box is a great value and it's really surprising how many individual sculpts are in it. Some days I wish I had gone with 1/72, especially for my ww2 projects but I'm too far down that road to turn back now. I was really tempted a while back with the First to Fight 1/72 Invasion of Poland sets that came out a few years ago. At my work, they play Lasting Lover on the radio several times a day. I'm not joking when I say I thought he was saying Lipstick Lover. The song goes in a weird direction with that lyric.
Haha, a singular honour. First and Only like the Tanith. Not many Imjin Appreciators, but I've got some content planned for that conflict soon, I really do think it's a great and underutilised setting. I think it's easy to get siloed in with your scale of choice, you don't want various armies of different scales, they look odd when placed together. There's the sunk cost of having armies in a scale already so I can't blame you, it is what it is. The important thing is if your minis and scale work for you. Haha that song was everywhere for a while, he doesn't really say Lasting very clearly, but it's an odd chorus anyway, it's a weird turn of phrase.
300 спартанцев Снайдера полный отстой. 300 спартаныев 1962 г. намного лучше и ближе к истории.
Хаха, я должен согласиться, это полная чушь. Это больше похоже на фильм о супергероях, чем на что-либо еще...
Looks good. Didn't know they'd put that together. Must be a growing theme for them though as I saw Russian Militia for Napoleonics is also a large mixed set, with troops from different parts of the Tsarist empire.
Yeah I think HaT do a variety of mixed army deal sets and they're all universally great bang for your buck. I personally have always found HaT to be one of the greatest companies for sheer figure count, and they're great for bulking up an army
This was extremely enjoyable, just subbed looking forward to the future channel updates.justin from the UK
Thanks Justin! Glad you enjoyed it, it was an interesting army to paint but the historical research was quite difficult, paid off though I think
Wowww
nice one! hope for part 2!
Yeah I actually had the script written from years ago but I never got around to it because I joined a group modelling project which took most of my time. I really want to come back to this at some point, I'll think about how to fit making a part 2 in my schedule
I have even more than that still in boxes. I'm figuring 10 -15 years worth of painting left to do and I'm a slow painter so perhaps longer. That Strelets Allied staff #2 is a very rare set you cannot find anywhere. Quite the gift someone left you. I just hope I can find someone to take my collection when I'm gone and no, I'm not shipping overseas. Cheers, Bessiere
Oh hey Bessiere! I really do identify with the problem of the endless grey pile - my ambitions outweigh my free time haha. I think we all hope our collections find good use, I've got an attachment to my painted armies in particular and I wonder what I'll do with them if I can no longer use it. Food for thought.
I'll have to watch it again and take some more notes along the way, but it'll be very helpful for my project (whenever I get back to it). I keep trying to get started but work and life just keep getting in the way. Thanks for doing this research, you've done a great service to the hobby.
Yeah I've been waiting for updates, I love seeing people doing the same obscure projects I like, it's the whole point. I want to note that I just repackage other content in a video, easy-English listening form, the history exists if you go look for it and I had a lot of help from people who know Korean. We build upon the knowledge and work of others.
@@CliosPaintingBench I can't say for certain when I'll start updating again. But it will happen. I did some thinking and the last time I had picked up a brush (prior to a canvas painting I'm currently working on) was late-October last year. Also, Fireforge finally sent me my Sengoku Japanese two weeks ago as well. They were supposed to have arrived around Sept-Dec of last year. I haven't even touched those yet, but they are nice sculpts.
@@TheCommandBunker Yeah the Fireforge sculpts are lovely but I heard about the delays too. You don't have to rush hobby things, the point is enjoyment. Don't make it into a job if you don't have to lol
@@CliosPaintingBench I definitely want to take my time. That said, I wasn't planning this long of a hiatus. There are still 12 work in progress Ancient Germans and 4 Victrix WW2 British on my desk. When my muse returns, I'll probably start back on those.
@@TheCommandBunker Ah, I considered doing Ancient Germans too after watching Barbarians and Gladiator, but too thematically close to the Celts, need more of a time to try other things haha
Clio, Minister of the Joseon tabletop military has returned and he has brought lots of gold to support our niche army!
Haha, it took a long time to return, it's not fast converting already finished models but I had to do it right or not do it at all. Enjoy!
@@CliosPaintingBench I started painting some Joseon policemen miniatures before I learned that they are not typical Joseon soldiers. But I'm happy they still depict something historical. Now I think of using them as some kind of cheap auxiliary troops. Do you maybe know a somewhat precise date when these uniforms were introduced? I want to do a post-imjin war force for the most part well into the 17th century, so more muskets for example, but maybe still to early for uniforms like of the lads in black and white?
@@_ukkonen_3768 I mean, I made the same mistake haha. I tried to research it and it didn't seem right but Google translate wasn't clear so I had an internal debate where I knew it wasn't accurate but I didn't have a real alternative and black and white seemed so easy so I figured I could always change it later. So the thing is , the black and white uniform depict the Na-Jol (나졸) (羅卒). They were established in the 17th century and the uniform colours varied, with the most common being a black overcoat and blue vest, BUT the sculpts can actually depict standard infantry, not just auxiliaries because at this time the standard army looked like this: twitter.com/gum_su_/status/1152166752874139648/photo/1 If you want more references, youtube the Jinju Musuem youtube channel, they recently made a short film series on a Joseon civil war depicting late Joseon that can show you the uniforms
@@CliosPaintingBench Thank you for the infos! The Jinju museum channel has some good stuff. I didn't really know before that the Joseon were so much into hand cannons pre-Imjin-War. Funny that in their videos they also use a lot of the black and white uniforms.
@@_ukkonen_3768 some of their earlier stuff was a little inaccurate but it has gotten a lot better! Their latest animation is great
✔️ "promosm"
Good fun. How do you like the Hail Caesar rules? Easy to learn?
Yeah they're easy and fast-paced. What I like in particular is the effort to streamline things and the choices it gives players - dividing armies into divisions speeds up the opening movement phases but when individual unit maneuvering matters you can go tactical with that and the option for the leaders to fight, but risk dying in the process gives players a risk / reward dilemma so I think it's a decent ruleset that's not too complicated.
Really enjoyable video; thank you, enjoyed the spectacle of 1/72nd figs. Hat does seem to make an extensive range of late Assyrians, but unfortunately not much else. Just started organizing my 1/72nd Romans and Carthaginians for 'Mortem et Gloriam' as there are extensive ranges for this period. I think you may like the HaT Sumerian's though; they would make a great narrative game or campaign narrated in the style of Gilgamesh. [As an aside, that first chariot charge into those archers should have broken them. Added 2 to morale roll rather than subtracted 2, so result should have been a 1- broken].
Linear-A are planning on releasing some new Assyrian infantry, siege troops and looters either this month or early next year, so we will all get new Assyrians in 1/72 after waiting for decades. I do own the HaT Sumerians but I wish other companies offered alternatives and the chariot unit is hard to source, I don't think I'd make that army for a while. I personally prefer the Roman republic - imperial era, there are extensive ranges and the cultures available are diverse and distinctive. Ah, thanks for the rules correction, I think I've never played a game where we've managed to get all the rules right, something always slips through in the urgent page flipping of the moment haha.
Hat make the war carts. Is it the horses that you don't like?
@@oblomovbruce9979 Yeah I know, I like the sculpt that's not the issue, it's just that I don't know if it's because of global supply chain issues but to get it, it has to be shipped from overseas now, so I'd have to make it part of a big order to make it worth it, so requires some forethought on my combined order
That's at least 2 fascinating projects ahead, with the soap opera and the multi-player game in China but what I'm really waiting for now is the painting video run by the deer. Hope the camera was working when that was happening...
haha now I'm tempted to make a parody painting guide of just neighing and hooves trying to hold brushes
Love this, one of my favorite periods bronze age Biblical. Great battle.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it, it's a very mythic age!
Fellow Joseon enjoyer here! I really appreciate your Imjin War posts. Alot of fun to watch and inspiring! I am also building a miniature Joseon army alongside some even more obscure asian factions, but in 28mm. I can relate well with trying to find all the historical informations and I find it funny how in the past I saved the same pictures as the ones you are showing for reference in your videos. Almost as if these are all there are on the internet and we went the same route to find them. Research became part of the hobby for me haha. On that note can you maybe tell me what this beautiful looking book about korean armour is at around 4:49 in your video? I'm always hungry for more references :) Cheers
Always great to meet a fellow Joseon enjoyer! Yeah I figured since there was no UA-cam Joseon miniature content I might as well make it myself. The knowledge gap irritates me. I'm glad you also save pictures for screenshots, visual references are so important for miniature making, I recommend using google translate to search using the Korean language, the results are usually better. I think I've spent more time researching than painting at this point haha. Sure so the book is written by the Twitter user gum_Su: twitter.com/gum_su_/status/1641725608555352066 and his tweet links to the website here: www.tumblbug.com/joseonmubi_1 gum_su is a terrific illustrator who paints historically accurate Korean stuff, so I think he's an excellent reference point. I really do hope if you paint your Koreans, you'll send me a link!
@@CliosPaintingBench Wow! These illustrations are wonderful! Thanks for pointing me the direction :) Yes, I will remember to send you a link. Hopefully in a couple of months I will have some nice pictures to show. Maybe this sounds like it's the first time i hear of the internet, but i think it's awesome that i can talk with someone on the other side of the globe about something super specific like miniature early modern asian armies haha
@@_ukkonen_3768 You're welcome, if you follow big name illustrators like gum_su or auxiliary police, they do a lot of research into historical authenticity of armours, much like reenactors, who care about getting it right. Good luck with the army! Yeah the internet is great for niche communities, how else can I discuss the Joseon military? It's just not the kind of conversation you can find at McDonalds lol
That was a very enjoyable tour, thanks for sharing it. That was a total bummer that they were closed. Just like the Japanese, you were denied entrance. (bad joke, I know) Out of curiosity, how did you find the trip? I believe you mentioned you can't read the Korean language, did you find that it made the trip more difficult?
Haha, I mean I laughed, wasn't too bad. Yeah I literally went on the one day they were closed for the week, I fully intend to go back when it's open. Not knowing Korean was fine for myself, in Seoul a lot of people speak English or there are English signs, most tourists go here. If you head to more obscure areas like Busan, it starts to be less-English friendly, but if you point and gesture and use google translate it's fine. For Jinju it's all pointing and google translate off the wifi but I found people make an effort. Google maps works for directions and if I'm talking to a local it's usually so I can buy a service or something so they're inclined to try lol. But yeah, fun place, cheaper than Japan but on the same level of first world development IMO
@@CliosPaintingBench That sounds like it could be somewhat a do-able trip. I've always had this fear of being "that tourist". It's good to know. The down side is that when I go places I prefer to go to the countryside. Like my ancestors, I don't do well with urban environments. Give me a good wooded or pastural area any day. Joesonghamnida and saranghaeyo. That is sadly all I know of the language, but if I ever make it over I'm sure I can pick up some other....much more useful phrases.
@@TheCommandBunker Haha, it really is fine, especially in Seoul I'm sure you wont have issues, people usually try to help out. Plenty of places to go for a hike, google maps works and is your friend, theres even some fortresses located on mountains and such.
