Megadeth has remained more consistent, but they've also taken fewer chances. In either case, they've released a lot of great work over the years. And, yes, Dave, despite his giant ego, has always been smart enough to surround himself with fantastic musicians. Metallica have been less consistent, especially given Load/Reload, but I give them credit for having the balls to try new directions. And yes, there are many better drummers than Lars/guitarists than Kirk, but Metallica at their core aren't prog first, they're songwriters first. All that said, predictable as it may be, I would take the first 4 Metallica albums over Megadeth's entire career. Not a doubt in my mind. Those 4 records are masterpieces to me.
