The Queen is dead, boys
And it's so lonely on a limb
Edit: RIP Andy Rourke, you absolute legend.
aged well
Hatful of Hallow is such an essential smiths record, i hate that it’s categorized as a mere compilation.
Agreed. It's the best quality recordings of their best songs. Insanely underated.
the smiths are a band that have simultaneously made my taste infinitely better, but my mental health infinitely worse. Johnny Marr Is Jesus, preach his word.
How Soon Is Now? happens to be my absolute favourite song of all time, so i’m happy my favourite music critic has finally covered their work, no band except maybe The Ramones, The Beatles, Iron Maiden Maybe? has affected me in such a way. so thankful for this retrospective.
Glad you enjoyed it
Andy might be the best bass player ever
definitely up there. it’s sad he doesn’t get the credit he deserves, although that’s expected when your playing in a band that has Jesus Christ on guitar.
Nah, none of them were the best of their instruments. Thats not what that band was about.
He is definitely up there
not even in terms of skill, just his ability to counter melody Marr's guitar perfectly with these off the wall bass lines. watching him play is a joy.
For me it's Tim Connerford of RATM
“…as if you grew up with this songs even if you never heard them before”
Spot on my friend, spot on.
a quick note i’d like to make on Meat Is Murder, i think the title track is what holds it back from being a 10/10. not due to the lyrics or the music, but because it’s the closer and it’s roughly the same length as “How Soon Is Now?”. if they put that on the album instead (trust me i listened to it like that, it works), nothing would hold it back from being the best album of all time.
Interesting point. But, I think it fits Hatful better.
Bigmouth strikes again is one of the best songs ever written.
Excellent retrospective!! The Smiths are one of the bands that shaped my music taste. They're simply unique.
Unique is an understatement!
The Smiths are often vying for the title of my favorite band of all time. If my favorite bands were the NFL, The Smiths would have the most rings, or the most World Cups if we played soccer. I wish I could find another Smiths fans on my day to day, like that kid on the elevator in 500 days of summer. We would strike a conversation in a coffee shop and we would tell each other how meaningful the Smiths’ songs are to us.
I have never seen that movie and it this point I'm not sure if I want to see it lmao
I so agree with how Mike and Andy should be given credit. I think they all did brilliant. RIP Andy Rourke. I was really heartbroken when I first heard the news.
Update: I forgot to say this when originally writing this comment, I got into The Smiths 9-10 months before Andy passed and I was so glad to.
It’s amazing that they were brilliant straight away , there’s absolutely no rubbish.
The instrument you hear at the end of Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want is a mandolin with several overdubs. I am a huge Smiths fan. Being there during their heyday, I love all of their releases.
I truly believe the Meat is Murder is their best album. I don't know if that is personal bias or not, but I feel like it really displays the band. It makes really upset none of the songs on the record ever made it to a "best of" or are mentioned in any review of The Smiths.
I find that whenever a band has a resurgence, the actual extent of their creativity as musicians is replaced by idolization as people instead, which is detrimental to the smiths’ legacy considering how musically incomparable they were at the time and still are. It will truly never be recreated and thats what so special about them.
The most original band ever!
They're certainly up there
I believe that the run of the Smiths is very alike to the one the Police had, short, hard hitting, influential and ending in bad terms lol
I honestly think Meat is Murder is their best album. I do see what Marr is saying about stuff being "too fast" though, but I really think it's a benefit rather than a detriment to the songs on the album, except for the title track. The title track Meat is Murder is a little too fast on record, but its not intolerable. MIM is a great, great record.
I like the tempo of the title track but I get what you mean
Utterly agree. The best album.
It's their best official album for sure. No doubt. But the titular song is complete rant devoid of any plausabe musical or lyrical spark. Rogan's questioning of the line 'death for no reason is murder' is more than valid AND potent
@@ScoopedMidsAlso 'That joke..' is Marr's favourite Smiths song. And mine, probably.
my only complaint is the host has the library already completed, growing up with The Smiths, waiting for each single and the excitement that came when they were released cannot be captured afterward, especially when the only mainstream radio absolutely refused to play The Smiths. Alternative music was and is still at the forefront of originality and creativity.
omg... i know is over.. either brings tears to my eyes or tears of mix up feelings from everything... lol.. i love that song
taste of honey.. beautiful movie... dude,, good retro.. totally with you.. smiths for me is my life in songs since 87. thanks so much, for all this info.. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Good video. I’m 53 and had the same feelings about the songs. Asleep helped me through a lot when I was younger and lost my Mom. Good work.
Wonderfully done, thank you, for the fair, informative, and sensitive insight. Sleep is such a blanket of curious comfort. Love the video, thank you to a precious soul.
I think Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before is my favorite Smiths song
The Smiths are the only band who ever reached parts of my inner self that I did not know existed 😂😂funny, sad, poignant and every other emotion that a human being can feel. RIP Andy 😢what a band❤❤
Awesome retrospective! This band came into my life, via 120 minutes, when I was 16 in the late 80s. Did a lot of wandering around the neighborhood listening to Rank of Hateful of Hallow
Been waiting for this. Great that's it's finally out
nice takes, and very nice poster in the back
great video!!! ive been a huge fan of them for a long time and you did them justice! also i love that the rockpalast performance of theirs is playing in the background on your tv!
Thanks, man.
Last night I saw your The Misfits retrospective, and was impressed. This Retrospective on The Smiths blew me away, GREAT JOB! The Smiths IMO were the greatest band in the last 40 years. I've released 6 albums, and the band I'm always compared to is The Smiths, and some REM lol
for me ,,, best band in the whole wide world.. huge fan since 1987..❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You do a fantastic job with these videos.
Thanks
Love your videos man another amazing retrospective
Another brilliant video - well done
thank
Gracias a dios existen los subtítulos. Ame cada minuto de video, gracias
Morrissey is my favorite horrible person. The rest of the band is perfect in every way. Separately they are all capable of making decent music but together they're absolutely lethal.
Imo, Meat Is Murder is the BEST Smiths album.
I'm the kind that listens to albums as the whole and that album is their most well rounded album. No other of their albums sound like it.
I love meat btw. Im a cook lol
SAME
queen really salty that they predicted her death
They were only 36 years early lmao
well today isn’t tomorrow, but i enjoy the upload either way
Ty
andy and mike are, andy rip.. they both are badass musicians for sure and 4ever
cheers from Brazil
fantastic video. Love the smiths, honestly i think their debut is my favorite but i dont think they have a bad record johnny marr really is one of the greatest guitar players. You should do a Killing Joke retrospective that would be awesome
Love Killing Joke
"If you really have something and your sure of it...Why hide?I don't understand that" MOZ on the Tube
The amazing intrument at the end of please please please is a mandolin
I'm mostly familiar with their song that's featured in the wedding singer soundtrack
I need that GTA IV poster
we are at the top of the food chain
now if you excuse me I have to go eat Kentucky Fried Chicken
Although not very important to the video Vini Reilly wrote the majority of music on viva hate and Stephen Street and Morrisey pretty much omitted any mention of his contribution on the album, that is why the album is so good
I'm aware he claimed this but I've always been dubious of that
@@ScoopedMids I'm inclined to believe solely because the talent of Vini Reilly matches up with a lot of those tracks along with some interviews Reilly gave which I thought described the situation quite well
Such a prolific band for being around for such a short period of time. Similar to The Jam.
sing me to sleep is a very very deep song... lol.. and with my record, i cant never add this song on my fb. page.. koz ill get a whole lots of calls to see if im ok.... lol
Great job, better than the English, BBC, docks but all those commenting and people of the world, "This night has opened my eyes" a great musical achievement and defines the Smiths and could should chart now, go listen now and carry on, many blessings
GREAT CHANNEL GREAT CONTENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RIP Andy Rourke.
greed is sicking indeed
The Smiths and Joy Division. The foundations of the Manchester sound.
I'm amused by the fact that The Smiths were so anti-authority, but then decades later Morrisey threatened to sue a studio because The Simpsons made an episode pointing out that he's a douchebag who doesn't actually believe anything he says.
Surprised you didn’t say anything about Marr playing with modest mouse for a few years
Ngl it completely slipped my mind lmao
Can't believe you missed the marr & billy duffy (the cult) connection.
I don't know what version of the debut album you have, but the original album certainly didn't have This Charming Man on it. The track list is:
A1 Reel Around The Fountain 5:55
A2 You’ve Got Everything Now 3:58
A3 Miserable Lie 4:27
A4 Pretty Girls Make Graves 3:41
A5 The Hand That Rocks The Cradle 3:45
B1 Still Ill 3:19
B2 Hand In Glove 3:23
B3 What Difference Does It Make? 3:49
B4 I Don’t Owe You Anything 4:04
B5 Suffer Little Children 5:29
All US pressings of the album featured This Charming Man, and it’s currently on every CD & digital release :) weird we didn’t get it on UK releases
@NathySakura I think it was not included (since it was released as a single prior to the album coming out) to encourage fans to buy the single. It probably wasn't released in US so they included it.
US version, yes. The US version of Meat is Murder had How Soon Is Now on it, too, which I don't believe was on the UK release.
Morrissey was such a pud-puller
YOU SHOULD DO A DESCENDENTS RETROSPECTIVE
As a proud carnivore I must state, I am not foolish enough to get my political stance I'm a rock and roll band. I have no problem consuming animals. As one day I will be consumed by predators that are higher on the food chain than I am.
I hope it's a T-Rex. That would rock.
He's a vile person because he stated a personal and valid opinion? Sure.
having a webcam doesnt work as well when we can see youre reading a script
maybe just use stock footage or something?
Dipweed
Fartweasel
Ok so agree on everything but on the vegan thing like you can not eat meat but you still live in a house made from wood cut down in a forest that probally got some animals displaced and killed so like where are you gonma draw the line i like to compare it to the punk argument like if your band is so punk u dont want to be on a tour or have merch sold at hot topic or whatever then your band probally wont be succesfull so where do u draw the line? Idk to each their own i feel bad about eating meat but its to engrained in me i feel and i do enjoy it sometimes
Well, you don't have much of a choice but to live in a house. Living on the street is dangerous for several reasons. And, you can eat different things other than meat and live your life the same way you did before. The worst that could happen is you might have to take vitamin supplements. Which is something I do anyway, and I eat meat. But, I'm iron deficient.
Good video but this guy hates morrissey and moz is the idea of the smiths he hates morrisseys freedom
No, I just hate you.
@@ScoopedMids havent watched the full vid yet. Watching now.
Is it true you dislike morrisey?
Meat is Murder as a track, for me at least, is a little over-the-top; not because of the message per say but how it's written musically and lyrically. for sure the weakest on the album, which is a shame, tho it still helped to get people considering vegetarinism and that's all that counts i suppose.
literally no one wants to watch your Talking Head read a script.
Literally everyone else did
You’re absolutely WRONG regarding meat eater v vegetarian diets relating to human health AND the environment. Do your research and don’t seek out “facts” from PETA.
Facts don't care about your feelings.
@@ScoopedMids They sure don’t. And the facts prove without question that an animal protein diet is infinitely healthier than a vegan or vegetarian diet. FACT indeed. Sorry to hurt your Leftist feelings. You don’t know shit about health - look at yourself in the freaking mirror.
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out is the best song ever. Period. And Johnny Fucking Marr is a guitar God.
*The Smiths are completely brilliant as a band. Hard to choose a favourite child but gun to head I'd pick LONDON, WHAT SHE SAID, THERE IS A LIGHT ..., HALF A PERSON or DEATH AT ONE'S ELBOW. But then, their entire ouvre is Midas*
*... and of course I WON'T SHARE YOU*
