I worked security at a show with the Jerry Only Misfits. Jerry was so cool, I'd asked to get a pic with him and he invited me into their touring trailer. He gave the whole security staff a free t-shirt that he signed. After that he stayed and took pics and signed the autographs of every single person that was left. I was the security that stayed there to make sure he was safe during that. It was in Seattle at Numoes.

Stop it with the lies. That security guard was ME. You were that 13 year old I wouldn’t let in because you showed me a fake ID. Now you’re all grownup, on the internet, telling MY story. Stolen valor.

I too have an Only Misfits story. In 2010, I saw them at Foxboro, MA and showed up 3 hrs early. Jerry saw me hanging alone in the parking lot and greeted me with a hug, invited me onto the tour winnebago and gave me a backstage pass so I could hang out inside. He posed for pics and was absolutely wonderful. I stayed in one spot the entire time since everyone was working towards setting up a show but Jerry would periodically stop over to see if I was OK and needed anything. After the show, I went up to say thank you and he gave me another big hug and thanked me for coming and hanging out. Unbelievable guy. As if I wasn't a big fan before, I'm a fiend for life!

I saw Danzig/Misfits in the early 90s. And this young punk next to us kept flipping Glen the bird and yelling obscenities and Glen warned him. It wasnt long and Glen shot off the stage about 25 ft out and tackled this annoying punk. Then began to beat him while singing the whole time the band never missed a beat. And needless to say the punk stopped flipping his birds. and the crowd cheered. What a great show!!!

Maybe it's just me but, I've always felt that the first Danzig era had a classic low budget slasher movie vibe, Graves had a more 90's slasher vibe, you know bigger budget and that it stood on the shoulders of the previous generation even if it didn't work out every time, and that the Jerry Only era was the ultra cheesey b-movies of the 1950's and 60's, maybe even a little more towards the direct to video type movies.

Misfits changed my life at the age of 13 ,it was 1988 and my older brother played in a garage band covering the misfits early years stuff. From then on I have never turned back , by far the best band of all time ... and also being a young comic book collector in those days I found myself trading all my superhero boxes for pre code horror and weird sci fi .. long story short these guys are the reason my house looks like a graveyard of awesome thru out!! Glenn discusses the early origins of the band in a long form radio interview available on here, and basically those people mentioned didn't write or even perform anything, it was more of a potential members that didn't work out scenario. "Original" members are typically defined as the lineup that starts to build recognition via recordings and performances in my opinion. To me it was always Glenn danzig, Jerry only, Bobby Steele, and Joey image that were the true original misfits. Doyle is arguably the most iconic guitarist though

I’ve just grown too accustom to seeing and hearing that era live so much that I take it for granted at times. Jerry is one of the kindest people I've ever met... Last time I ever saw him ( in Grand Rapids Michigan) he would not leave the stage area until every one of the fans that wanted a quick moment or a high five or an autograph, got it. The whole story of the Misfits is entertaining, and you did a great job on this video my friend. I was almost late to work watching it..... Remember... Be good!

  • @GreggNowhere

To be fair, the drum intro at 44 minutes is the Phil Spector drum intro, famous from the Ronettes classic "Be My Baby" from 1963 (considering Jerry's love for 50s and 60s music, that's probably where it was cribbed from) as well as being used in hundreds of other songs over the years.
Fun fact!: Phil Spector is a complete maniac who produced a Ramones album and allegedly forced them to record one of his songs at gunpoint.

One last drunken comment. As a person who has been a misfits fan in life longer than I haven't been one, taking the risk and seeing the band is fucking worth it. I saw danzig a ton as well as danzig with Doyle doing short misfits sets, and I got to see Samhain once. Aside from Samhain, nothing compared to being able to witness Glenn, Doyle , and Jerry playing a full set of anthemic misfits classics. I don't care about it being in a stupid ass stadium nose bleed section for 120 bucks, it was worth it to cross the misfits off my list. If it's at all possible for you to squeeze out just do it. It really is something amazing, especially being a fellow younger fan who wasn't around for the heyday

I recently saw the original lineup of The Misfits last Saturday at the Prudential Center and was amazed at how good Danzig vocals are at 68. They put on a hell of a show. Would definitely go again if they play there next year. I too am also a big Michael Graves era fan of the Misfits. I had an opportunity to meet him at a Chiller theater and he was really cool to talk to. It would be cool to see Graves take the stage with the band again for a few songs but I know it will likely never happen.

I was there too. Fantastic show! I just wish they would play longer sets, but they are pretty old so I get it. If Danzig, Only, Doyle, and Graves could all share a stage that would be cool too, but that be even more unlikely than a 90s Misfits reunion.

My friend worked at Camelot Music in the mall and told us to come in and steal whatever we wanted. I filled my backpack with whatever looked cool. One of the CDs I ended up with was Static Age. After listening the first time I was blown away. How had I never heard this before? It was and still is my all time favorite album.

Glenn Danzig is kind of like the Quentin Tarantino of music. The Misfits got me into old campy horror, and I developed an appreciation for Elvis and the Doors. How the Danzig era of the band started out doing rockabilly-inflected first-generation punk and ended doing something anticipating goregrind (think Repulsion or Impetigo) is fascinating!

01:03 🎸 The Misfits transformed from struggling locally to becoming iconic due to their image, catalog, and live performances, despite never hitting big commercial success until the '90s.
02:11 🎤 The Misfits birthed horror punk, blending punk with horror aesthetics, though musically, they weren't vastly different from their non-horror counterparts.
03:05 🌟 Glenn Danzig formed The Misfits out of a disdain for corporate rock, recruiting members and drawing inspiration from horror films and Elvis.
07:38 🎶 "Static Age," initially rejected by labels, became a cornerstone of punk history and stands as a favorite release due to its iconic tracks like "Last Caress" and its groundbreaking nature.
10:16 💀 Despite "Static Age" not heavily showcasing horror elements, tracks like "Bullet" and "Return of the Fly" hinted at The Misfits' future macabre direction.
14:57 🚀 "Hybrid Moments" from "Static Age" emerged as a deeply personal, emotive Misfits song, highlighting rare themes of emotional vulnerability amidst their otherwise dark discography.
17:22 🎨 The Misfits' iconic horror look, with skulls, black attire, and the Crimson Ghost logo, solidified their image, though they borrowed certain logos without copyright repercussions.
20:33 🇬🇧 The Misfits' UK tour with The Damned soured due to financial issues and instrument problems, culminating in them leaving the tour early, leading to wild adventures in London, including a jail stint for Glenn and a songwriting session.
22:50 🎶 "Walk Among Us" is the quintessential Misfits album, a powerful mix of Powerpunk riffs and evil Elvis-style vocals that define the band's style and mission.
24:08 🧟‍♂ "Walk Among Us" is like stepping into a haunted mansion filled with ghoulish fun-a party album that feels like the best B movie night with friends.
25:23 🎤 Glenn's use of 'woes' in the classic Misfits/Danzig songs added character and meaning without even needing words.
26:19 🧟‍♂ The Misfits' song "The Living Dead" isn't specific to the film but encapsulates the essence of zombies, adding a thrilling vibe to the album.
27:28 🎸 "Devil's Whorehouse" has a unique percussion sound on the left channel, creating an odd but compelling element within the song.
28:32 🎶 "Astro Zombies" could have been the Misfits' defining song, anthemic and triumphant, showcasing Glenn's powerful vocals and fantastic production.
30:21 🤘 The Misfits faced internal issues, with Glenn wanting a metal direction while dissatisfaction grew with other band members' limitations.
31:15 🔊 Glenn's dissatisfaction with "Earth A.D." stemmed from production issues, thin vocals, and dissatisfaction with the album's overall recording.
32:47 🎸 "Earth A.D." showcased the Misfits transitioning into hardcore punk influenced by bands like Minor Threat and Black Flag.
34:26 💀 "Die Die My Darling," despite being recorded during the "Walk Among Us" sessions, fit remarkably well into "Earth A.D." and remains one of the Misfits' well-known tracks.
35:28 🎵 Glenn's dissatisfaction with "Earth A.D." resonates with the album's hardcore production style, not aligning with his preference for more layered textures.
36:22 🐺 "Wolf's Blood" on "Earth A.D." is the most ferocious, capturing the Misfits' only truly scary moment on record, emphasizing a visceral experience.
39:48 🎤 Michael Graves joined the Misfits as the frontman, a change embraced by some but criticized by others due to the band's departure from Glenn Danzig's era.
40:58 🎸 The 90s Misfits, led by Michael Graves, appealed to a different generation but faced criticism for not matching the intensity of the original Glenn Danzig era.
44:51 🎬 American Psycho album included songs based on movies, but some felt less substantial, though tracks like "Shining" stood out for their energy and performance.
46:31 🎤 Michael Graves faced conflicts within Misfits, leading to a hiatus, yet Hideous briefly replaced him; later, Graves returned before the band shifted to Roadrunner Records.
48:01 🎶 "Famous Monsters" marked a high point post-Danzig era for Misfits, improving upon the foundation laid in "American Psycho," offering better tracks and refined elements.
49:24 🧟‍♂ The video for "Scream" from "Famous Monsters," directed by George A. Romero, involved drama, including Michael Graves missing the shoot, altering the production.
53:23 🎸 "Descending Angel" stands as a pinnacle of post-'83 Misfits, demonstrating a powerful sonic landscape and a compelling vocal performance from Graves.
54:12 💔 Internal conflicts led to significant departures from Misfits, leaving Jerry as the only original member, drastically altering the band's dynamics and sound.
55:39 🎶 "Project 1950" was a cover album by Misfits members and others, widely criticized for its poor execution and Jerry Only's lackluster vocal performance.
57:30 🎙 The album "Project 1950" was regarded as a misstep, lacking the reverence for Misfits' legacy, feeling more like a side project than a cohesive Misfits record.
58:13 🗣 Jerry Only's vocal performance in "Project 1950" drew heavy criticism for its flatness and lack of quality compared to the original songs covered.
01:02:07 🎸 In "The Devil's Reign," Misfits showed slight improvement, but the album was ultimately labeled mediocre, lacking the classic Misfits' essence and feeling overly drawn out.
01:04:52 🎵 "The Devil's Reign" album, while not entirely bad, was considered mediocre, with few standout tracks, suggesting listeners opt for specific songs rather than the full album.
01:05:34 🤘 The Misfits faced changes in their lineup, including Dez leaving due to health issues, replaced briefly by Jerry's son, leading to releases that didn't stand out in the band's history.
01:05:48 🤘 Misfits reunion happened in 2016, surprising many, uniting Jerry, Doyle, and Glenn Danzig at Riot Fest after years of tensions and failed talks about reunions.
01:06:57 🎸 The reunited Misfits have played sporadic dates since 2016 with AC Slade and Dave Lombardo, sounding great, but limiting shows mostly to big US markets and a few in Mexico.
01:07:25 💰 Fans eagerly await a world tour or a new record, willing to spend big, showcasing the enduring demand for Misfits' music.
01:07:53 🎶 Despite potential interest in new music, the prospect of a new Misfits album seems unlikely due to differing perspectives between Jerry, Doyle, and Glenn Danzig.
01:08:52 🔥 The Misfits' influence endures through various bands, with their classic songs and even the Graves era being acknowledged for their impact, cementing their place in music history.
