MIDDLE of the Book MARCH
United States
Приєднався 29 лис 2018
I'm Kim and I love reading most genres except for horror, in this order: literary fiction, classics, non-fiction, fantasy, mystery, romance, and whatever else there is. I'm a lifelong reader, book lover, all around awesome woman living in New England.
"...magnificent...one of the few BOOKTUBE CHANNELS FILMED for grown-up people...
-- attributed and stolen from/incorrectly quoted from Virginia Woolf, on her review of "Middlemarch".
I'm a full time employee, mother, wife, Booktuber, ordained Minister (through an organization that includes ALL adults in marriage), and voracious reader.
I regularly fail at housework, remembering to buy toilet paper, and getting back to texts.
I'm great at ordering pizza, changing into pajamas within 1 1/2 minutes of getting home, and staying up really late binge watching Golden Girls.
There's no time to take yourself too seriously...

Books with Beautiful Writing-Thanks Brian!
Well done you. 5 years. Awesome.
@@nathanfoung2347 thanks Nathan!!! It’s subscribers like you that make this such a joy to do! ❤️❤️❤️
Congrats on 5 years! Hoping to see more of you content for at least another 5. That's interesting about processed food. Too afraid to look at the back of my boxes and cans. 😟
@@tealorturquoise thank you! 🥰
Congratulations on 5 years!! So glad you’re here! I mostly crochet, but I get little done during your videos because I’m busy taking notes and looking up your reads. It’s a good thing ❤
@@vickicoleman2474 thank you so much! 🥰
Happy fifth anniversary, Kim! 🥳 I finished All Yours yesterday and really liked it, but much prefer Elena Knows and A Little Luck. Like, by a wide margin. Now I'm wondering if it's because of the different translator. Guess I'll have to read the latest to find out.
@@Nina_DP thank you! Yes I think the translator has much to do with my enjoyment of All Yours. Time of the Flies was much better.
Five years, Kim! Wow! Congratulations! That really is quite a significant milestone. Ultra-Processed People sounds really good. Thanks for this overview of the book. Rao's Homemade Sauce sounds good. I will look for that. I've also just started A Court of Mist and Fury. The jury is still out. I'm not sure if I'm going to get through this one. I'm really looking forward to being able to talk about Time of the Flies.
@@BookChatWithPat8668 thanks Pat! 🥰 I’m in Mist and Fury and will finish it. But not sure yet if I’ll continue. It’s easy to put down and not be dying to get back to. I don’t want to stick with a series like that when I have so many other things to read.
@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH I'm only four chapters in. I don't know what I'll do at this point. I'm pretty sure if I do keep going that I won't read beyond this one. I'll defend its right to exist and not to be banned, but I don't know how much energy I have to give to it either.
I really need to get to the turtle book by Sy Montgomery. Love some escapist reading!
Congrats on 5 years. Love you and all your videos. Keep it up!!
@@jillwhitneybirk thank you so much! 🥰
Thanks for the update! Food you buy in cans and jars is preserved through heat (killing the bacteria present) and vacuum sealing (keeping new bacteria out) and thus can stay on your shelf without added preservatives. Same with home-canned food. Hope that sets your mind at ease!
Congratulations on your 5 years Kim, glad to hear you’re sticking around as I love your channel!
@@Ali-AvidReader thank you so much! 🥰
The Pineiro Project sounds fun!
@@davidnovakreadspoetry it really is!
I try to avoid processed convenience food by canning my own ingredients, soups, stews, etc. Pressure canned foods do not need any preservatives. That sounds like a great book!
@@Fernie4243 I wish I could do that.
Five years is amazing Kim! It felt like it flew by! I really like the sound of UPP and might even try and listen to it on audio, which I hardly ever do, as that’s all I can borrow. I’m lucky enough to grow a lot of my own food and make things like pasta sauce but I know there are plenty of processed foods in my cupboard despite that 😬
@@josmith5992 thanks Jo! 🥰
Congratulations on 5 years! That's a milestone to celebrate. ♥
@@ariannefowler455 thanks! 🥰
Congrats on 5 years! It's been fun watching you over the years. UPP sounded fascinating so I borrowed the audiobook on Libby today. I buy Ragu but I buy Ragu Simply which has only 8 ingredients and sugar isn't one of them. It's hard to find products without added sugar that aren't expensive. I'll admit that I'm too cheap to buy Rao.
@@LaurieInTexas I’m cheap too but I don’t eat it very often. And it’s delicious! 😋
In numerology, the number 5 is seen as a symbol of positive energy. 5 years is an awesome milestone. I didn't even know about Booktube 5 years ago. I'm glad you are still here.🙂📚
@@mariasmiles68 thank you!
Depending on the numerology lineage you follow (there are a few) If you read the Rider Wait Smith tarot system, it is quite the opposite... as 5 is seen as strife, scarcity, conflict, etc. :) for this, 5s can also be viewed as a pivotal point for better things ahead. So it'a all good.
Putting UPP on my tbr right now. “My name is D…. and I’m a sugar addict”. The sugar industry really put one over on us when they blamed fats for our health problems 😡. I love Boves sauce and like Raos it costs more but has no added sugar. I try to not buy anything with 5 grams or more per serving. Obviously there are exceptions. Keep in mind that 7 gr is an overflowing teaspoon. I’ve been known to measure out amounts of sugar contained in whole jars, bottles, or packages into a glass to gross myself out. 😂 Tomatoes have enough acid ( preservative, that’s why vinegar lasts so long) in them that gramma ( and you) can jar them up using a stove top pot(water bath) instead of a pressure canner. Other veggies like carrots and green beans? Nope…unless you pickle them.
Hi Kim, I loved hearing your thoughts on UPP! I've added it to my TBR. Beautiful pie! Hope you've had a happy Thanksgiving weekend.
@@books_and_bocadillos thank you so much! 🥰
I've been committed to healthy eating for many years, but there is *always* more to learn and consider, and 'Ultra-Processed People' sounds like a fascinating book. I just put it on hold on Libby. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it! 'The Invisible Man' is a great classic I need to re-read myself - maybe in 2025. 😊
🥧🥧🥧
What a beautiful pie Kim! We also use a similar spaghetti sauce. Bove's I think. We have started buying pasta imported from Italy as we seem to tolerate it much better. It is something about the wheat they use and the process for making the pasta. As with you, my daughter and I having had "the surgery" we do not eat a lot of pasta. I have Elena Knows on my shelf to read. My question to you is would you mention when you're done with the project please comment on which of her novels you would start with or if it matters. Thanks! Hope you can warm up with a nice cup of tea or coffee and a comfy blanket and a good book!
@@marciajohansson769 hi Marcia. The first Pineiro book I read was Elena Knows. It’s a great start and fairly short. So far my favorite.
Hi Kim, I stopped eating Ragu and Prego about 20 years ago. Now I really find it salty and oddly sweet. I was raised in the 50s where there weren’t many processed foods that we could afford and the meat we ate didn’t have antibiotics. Well, did that change in the 80s and 90s and I ate almost a totally processed diet. And I paid for it with 70 extra pounds and I also have some cardiovascular problems, though under control. Salt it’s also a preservative and a way to keep processed food fresh. I have cut way down on salt. I read the invisible man in college and it really made a big impression on me. I should reread it. Congratulations on your five years on book tube. Have a wonderful month of reading. Love and aloha.❤MMM .
@@MarilynMayaMendoza thanks Maya! ❤️
Just ordered the book on UPF. I am a label reader after a couple of health concerns. The labels with the least ingredients go into my cart. That's how I found Raos. However, this is a good reminder to check the stuff in cupboard that may have scarily entered my kitchen w/o my knowledge. HAHA. My next two books are Orbital and Himself.
@@krc5210 I love Himself! I hope you enjoy it. 🤓
Five years! So glad you are around and not likely to stop. Chris Van Tulleken knows his stuff. It is alarming. Thinking about why your jars of pasta sauce have a longlife, they use the same technique as our grandmothers did before refrigeration in bottling vegetables and fruits.
@@scallydandlingaboutthebook2711 thanks Rod! 🥰 And I suppose I should be grateful that there’s not more preservatives in the sauce. I’m glad the ingredient list was simpler than I was expecting.
I would like to read more Claudia Pineiro but where I am they aren't easily available. I don't know why but I'd like to know why.
@@janethansen9612 interesting. Can you order online?
I totally Agree.Laxy cooks not really but time work all that we have to do time time Grandma spend hours to make us healthy God Bless her Hours she spent to keep us healthy.. Quick Quick Not so good I'm thinking. Time is r Enemy.. for sure ..crazy..,

@@theresepazell7875 thank you! 🥰
I reread Jane Austen novels - one every July - Persuasion is my favorite. I have also reread Middlemarch a few times. This past February I reread Middlemarch side-by-side with the memoir by Rebecca Mead called "My Life in Middlemarch". I enjoyed reading those two books together. I have also reread "Winter Solstice" by Rosamunde Pilcher several times because I think Elfrida Phipps is a beautiful soul.
Scattered describes me to a t lately. I keep losing things and forgetting things. Argh!!
Sounds like a good plan to some of the books. Do what works for you is always the way to go.
'Of Time and Turtles' sounds very interesting and heartwarming. Turtles are fascinating to me! Definitely going to be on the lookout for this book! 'Ultra-Processed People' - already on hold with Libby, and you make it sound great! This past month, I read more books at the same time than usual. I managed it, but I've decided that 3 or 4 at the same time (and definitely different genres) is enough for me. 😊
@@WildHeartsandWildflowers my goal is 2 at a time. 🤓
@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH Such restraint is impressive, Kim! ☺️ I doubt I could ever achieve that! ~ another Kim
Great wrap up. Really enjoyed this. I know what you mean about reading too many books in one go. I need to address this as well. Have finally started the second Pineiro and am loving it so far 😊
@@RaynorReadsStuff excellent! Me too. 🤓
Good on you for slowing down a minute.
Your intro was hil-arious 😂 I’ve not read Sy Montgomery, but I want to❤️. Thank you.
I'm currently reading Before the Coffee Gets Cold (Toshikazu Kawaguchi) . I now have 71un-read books on my Kindle ( I have *no idea* how that happened) so I'll read a few titles there before 2025 and listening to "The Book That Wouldn't Burn" on my daily walk because I want to start the 2nd ("The Book That Broke the World"). As this point you should just make up dates.
@@Tetsujin-28 🤣🤣🤣
Most of those “Zero” ingredients are sugar or convert to sugar. You probably already know that. I’m just writing this for any viewers who may not be aware.
Good for you for setting aside books! I've read "The Guncle" but didn't care for the writing style. I hope your reading week will be a good one for you. The US stress is real. Reading romantasy is probably healthier than drinking. lol
@@nadineaugustyn130 that’s questionable. 🤣
Ultra-Processed - gob smacking, fascinating, a real horror story for our time.
Hi Kim, I have an audible credit and I’m thinking of using it for “ultra processed people“. That list of ingredients you mentioned in the beginning should horrify people that eat the standard American diet.sad. I tried to eat foods that are in ultra processed. I’m not saying I’m perfect. I still love my Fresca, but I only drink one a day. I gave up my frozen dinners even the ones that are so-called healthy because one, they have a ton of salt in them and two they taste good to me anymore since I’ve been eating real food. I’ve been feeling sluggish this week, but I want to put out a short video today. I also don’t prepare as much as I should. And I have help.😅 and my full-time job is keeping my “palace” running. Aloha friend.
@@MarilynMayaMendoza the audiobook is fantastic. I got it from Libby so it was free through the library. 🤓
@ I just checked Libby and it would take 15 weeks for me to read it so I guess I’ll use my credit. Thank you for the suggestion. I don’t use Libby enough and I’m sure there’s something available right now. This must be a new book. Aloha friend.
Love Sy Montgomery so much. As an avid scuba diver/snorkeler who has played hide and seek with an octopus, I can attest to the personalities of non-furry creatures.
I if you haven't read them, I recommend Legends and Lattes, as well as the prequel, Bookshops and Bonedust. These are feel good cozy fantasy books that my wife and I both enjoyed very much. You may have read them already, as we are a little late to the party on them.
@@kdj3000 I started to but put them down. Not sure if I’ll get to it. 🫤
Like you I struggle with too many books on the go. Glad you’ve got it under control again
I read and listen to lots of books at once. For me it’s like watching several ongoing tv shows. Not a problem. Makes it easier to get through the duller books I’m reading for information not entertainment.
💚💜🧡❤💛
I loved snarky -- hope she had a good time. Put a Sy Montgomery on hold at Libby. I look forward to something new.
How weird. I left a message this morning and it's not here now.
@@marciajohansson769 hmmm…
@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH It's happened a couple of times. Anywho, I wanted to recommend Joel fuhrman's book fast food genocide which is fascinating and Jason Fung's The obesity code so much interesting information and research going back in history. I do enjoy a good non-fiction audiobook. Or a book that has difficult names and places to pronounce. I'm totally with you with over scheduling myself a book events. I get better at it for a while and then I slip back into wanting to be a part of everything. 😜 I'm glad you took the time to spend with your granddaughter during the week. Oohh, will you do a library tour soon? Those are some gorgeous looking shelves (v. interested to see your Library of America collection)
@@NZAnimeManga I keep thinking of doing this! Going to get a little more organized first. 🥰
I second the recommendation of Sy Montgomery's middle grade science books. They have a perfect balance of substantial information, good nonfiction narrative storytelling and great photographs. I have yet to try one of her adult books but they sound good, too.
@@readandre-read The Soul of an Octopus should be your first. ❤️
