I really enjoyed this. I think a bookish week update is a really fun idea. I am such a slow reader, but it might be fun to challenge myself to see how much I can get through each week.
Revisiting East of Eden is always time well spent. Some of Steinbeck’s shorter works which don’t get mentioned much are also the ones that have stayed with me the longest. The Moon is Down, The Winter of our Discontent, To a God Unknown, Pastures of Heaven. The Log from the Sea of Cortez. At turns moving, bittersweet, funny, disquieting, and all achingly human. Beyond the greatest hits, there are some real treasures among his deep cuts.
You have convinced me to take a closer look at Willa Cather. I have always been intrigued by landscape and history of the Southwest and Death Comes For the Archbishop.
White pants in the fall?! What a rebel. I do want to read Death Comes for the Archbishop. I'm looking forward to hearing about Vanity Fair; I've been eyeballing that one for decades!
I'm glad you enjoyed Death Comes to the Archbishop even more the second time around. I love the book and recommend it whenever I can. I am reading Vanity Fair for Victober too, but I have already started. I have 3 long Victorian books planned so I started VF in September since it's the longest. I am about 40% of the way in and I am enjoying it.
I have always wanted to read Death Comes for the Archbishop and have just ordered it. I am rather ashamed to say it will be my first Cather read. Am looking forward to it. Thanks.
Death Comes for the Archbishop is one of my favorite books. I think I’ll reread this treasure.❤ it’s been more than 2 decades since I first read it. That’s funny (about A Court of Thorns and Roses). 🙃
Hi Kim, I want to read worlds of wonders. I love animals and beautiful prose, I also want to read the Willa Cather book. It’s one of hers that I missed. Aloha friend.
Hi Kim. I love Willa Cather. I remember reading Death Comes for the Archbishop with my mother many, many years ago. I think this is one I should revisit. The Spellshop sounds delightful, and I, too, would be tempted by PURPLE pages! The Anxious Generation sounds like a really important book for our times, for sure. You are tempting me to read the second Sarah J. Maas, but I'm trying to resist....East of Eden will definitely be a wonderful re-read! Terrific video, Kim.
I had similar feelings about ACOTAR. The characters stick with you! I ended up finishing the series and the last book ended up being my favorite, though the second one is also good and a lot of people favor that one. The writing quality does improve as the series goes on. That was my first series set in a world with Fae and I’m finding that I kind of enjoy them now. I’ve been seeking out more fantasy novels since reading the series. I have the same edition of The Spellshop waiting for me to read it now. I couldn’t pass up the purple edges either. Something about the color with that cover is just so pleasing to the eye! :)
I loved World of Wonders too Kim as well as East of Eden 😍Vanity Fair is one of my favorite books but I told Britta that if you three don’t like it I’ll still be your friend 😉😢
You had me laughing with a Court of Thorns and Roses. I read it a few weeks ago and then immediately read A Court of Mist and Fury. I couldn't stop and am now reading A Court of Wings and Ruin.
Climate change is shaking up that white pants thing! That Cather sounds interesting - which I say as someone who didn’t much care for my reading of _O Pioneers!_ _World of Wonders_ looks up my alley too! Good reason for picking up that Vol. 2 of _Court._
Vanity Fair is a good read - I think you'll enjoy it. I read Death Comes for the Archbishop maybe 10-15 years ago. I was expecting not to like it, anticipating being bored by the Catholicism and the Southwestern setting. Yet it immediately became one of my favorite books. Have you read "I Heard the Owl Call My Name"? It's similar in many respects - a young vicar sent to British Columbia to minister to the native population. Heartwarming, I won't spoil it.
Definitely got a chuckle out of me as you were talking about ACOTAR and picking up the next book in the series. I did start reading it with the banned book read along but set it aside for other books that grabbed my attention. Now you have piqued my interest as to what about the story has kept you interested LOL. The book is still on my bed with the others I am reading so I have not given up getting back to it!!! I can't believe how fast September went by and I have not read a fraction of what I wanted to read for #shortyseptember, #shaketember and #framedinseptember. It has been a great reading month though and will refocus on the quality of the reading and not the numbers. #slowreader I am anticipating #victober although I am not sure who may be hosting such an event. I have collected Anthony Trollope's Chronicles of Barsetshire series so I will start The Warden. I have been able to collect a matching hardback set of the series at library sales and thrift shops. I was so excited to find them! I hope you finally had something to eat and can enjoy the rest of your day!
@@marciajohansson769 I never read everything I intended. And I like you am concentrating on the quality of my reading instead of the quantity. I find myself getting sucked into that mindset too often. Yes I fed myself. 🤣🥰
