So glad you did this. We definitely agree about Beloved. Their Eyes Were Watching God is beautifully written. The description of the hurricane and the flood are amazing. Hurricane Season! Thanks for the reminder. All of your choices sound great.
What a wonderful topic for a video-and how marvelous to listen to you reading such beautiful prose. The Ruby Dee is indeed phenomenal! Now In November is on my list!
I love these selections, Kim. I also love Their Eyes Were Watching God and Beloved. There are so many searing scenes in Beloved. Ahhhhh I need to read it again! Now in November has been on my list for quite a while. Great video!
I’m so happy to see you talking about The Orchardist. Sublime is the right word. The writing, the sense of place, the storytelling. She’s a unique voice. I've been watching for another book from her since 2012, but if we never get another, The Orchardist is more than enough to be grateful for.
What a fabulous video. I really enjoyed you talking about your beautifully written favourites and I will definitely be picking a few of these up. Thank you 😊
When I saw your video title, the first book I thought of was Their Eyes Were Watching God. I love the flowers and plants motifs in it. I read Beloved until about 60% when I set it aside many months ago (due to external reasons I couldn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to). But I thought the writing was breathtaking. Imageries, I thought, were described in surprising ways (like the tree on one character's back).
This is great! I did my own version of a response video to Brian yesterday - but it turned out much too long to expect anyone to watch wholly. 😂 Like you, I could go on. But you did a marvelous job of holding down the length yet packing it full.
Beloved. I will remember the impact of this novel as I listened to Toni Morrison narrate her own novel for a long time. I would like to try to read the physical copy some time but at the time the audible was just what I needed. 💙
Hi Kim, thank you for mentioning Lorraine Hansberry, her writing was gorgeous. She was so much more than a magnificent writer though. She was an activist and wrote other plays and works. She fought against racial prejudice, both here in the US and in Africa. I also love Wuthering Heights. Thank you for this beautiful video with beautiful writing. Aloha friend.
Embarrassed to say this, but you said she, when talking about George Eliot, and I had to look her up! I didn’t know that was a pen name! Now I’m fascinated and need to read Middlemarch. She led a very interesting life. Thank you 😊
Stop! Stop! This is my wheelhouse. I love beautiful writing so much that I'll read experimental books in which I have no idea what is going on but will continue to read just for the writing. Love to see Beloved by Toni Morrison on your list as it is one of my favorite books. Also, I've now added The Wall and The Orchardist to my tbr reluctantly because I'm trying to keep it small but just had to.
First time viewing your videos. Thoroughly enjoyed it and have subscribed. Wuthering Heights is my favorite book and I have read it many times. Per your suggestion I will be purchasing Now in November and will look forward to reading it.
Thanks for these ideas. Here's one in return: just read This Other Eden by Paul Harding. Extraordinary and beautiful prose Definitely worth seeking out, though it's a tough - and short - read.
Kim: You are chock full of surprises (You kids still say that?). Paradais (Fernanda Melchor): Loved this book (I suggest you don't read it) so I may try Hurricane Season. Our Wives Under the Sea (Julia Armfield): best prose. Strange Sally Diamond (Liz Nugent): Most disturbing audiobook EVAH. The Vegetarian (Han Kang): Another great read. Reviewers tended to get stuck on the "vegetarian" aspect of the book, but it was a vehicle to tell a story about a dysfunctional family. This was a "me problem" I had with The Wall. I was waiting for the "Sci Fi" aspect. Love the content.
Including A Raisin in the Sun feels both bold and correct. Well done!
I love this video. Added The Orchardist to my TBR. Thank you, Kim.
