Hello Kim, I loved that poem by Maya Angelou, and we are in sync again because I almost read it today. I am also not a Stephen King reader. I read two of his psychological books and the only one I really enjoyed was. Dolores Claiborne. Thank you so much for supporting my event. Mine is on Saturday and I plan to celebrate with my family. Aloha dear friend.❤❤❤
Loved James, so glad you did too. Completely agree that it is intriguing and challenging and provocative and stirring. ❤I haven't heard of anyone who read it that hasn't loved it.
Fantastic week and Fantastic DNF awareness. It’s a true skill to come to terms with what we live and what we don’t love. There is sheer power in making that decision. I’m thrilled that you are taking part in the ACOTAR September! 👏🏻👏🏻
Really liked "Women Work" and am enjoying these poem readings. Yes, read banned books. I updated my tbr yet again in June and pushed up any book that I already have on my list that was banned, challenged or I thought could be banned in the future. The ability to read and decide for yourself the meaning or information gained is so critical and especially needed in these times.
That passage from James is one of my favorite parts. Still secure in its spot as best novel I've read this year. I got Absolution for Christmas and still haven't read it! The shame!
What a cutie! Well done on realizing The Stand wasn’t for you and DNFing Kim, very wise. I read early King too and loved them but couldn’t finish IT and that was that.
I am currently reading James and really enjoying it! I've had to put it aside for now, at around 60%, to prioritize library books before they're due. I can't wait to get back to it, though!
Happy Birthday to the youngest family member. My youngest grandson will be 6yrs old on the 31st. Romantasy: I recently picked up A Fate Inked in Blood (Danielle L. Jensen). I want to read: Walking Practice (Dolki Min), The Hike (Drew Magary) and Headshot (Rita Bullwinkel). Love the channel.
I felt a little iffy on the ending of James but I am still incredibly sold on the merits of the book and happy to see it succeed. I'm hoping it will become the first book to win both the Booker and Pulitzer. The opening chapter of Absolution is so good--I feel like you could separate it out as a short story and it would still work.
Hi Kim. I loved hearing your thoughts about James, and that quotation from p. 73 is absolutely perfect for our times. I'm also a big Alice McDermott fan, and I really liked Absolution. My book group read it a few months ago. I thought that you handled the Stephen King issue very well. I haven't yet figured out what I want to say about it.
I cannot wait to read James. I haven’t decided on the Chris Whittaker book but you may have convinced me. I may also have to check out Streisand’s book. I will wait to hear your thoughts. It’s massive! 😊💙
I'm finally reading _James,_ currently, and loving it! Big Stephen King fan, me! Read _Streisand,_ and loves that, to boot! Hey, Greg & I would like to have you on the Monday Night Live Show, in late October. What'd ya think? _Adventures of Huckabee Finn_ is my favorite American novel. 📙
I remember that quote that you’re reading out from James. I came across those lines while I was out walking, listening to the audio and was so moved by them that when I got back to reading the physical book, I made a point of looking for them in order to reread. Minor rant - which would be a major rant had I not thought you might BAN me.😂 The book banning thing is dumbfounding . It absolutely falls into the same category as banning free speech. How anyone can, in this day and age, agree to banning books and think it’s normal and the way forward, is beyond me. But then again we’re not dealing with normal people . Also, a totally futile asinine undertaking as these high school kids still have access to these books regardless of whether they are unavailable in their schools - or easier still (and more probable) they watch the Netflix adaptations.😂😂 Handmaid‘s tale, perks of being the wallflower, 13 reasons why ….But then again these small minded fools were too unintelligent to factor in that possibility!! I’m currently reading All the colors of the Dark. It might be a DNF for me though. I’m at 27% and I feel like everything is being drawn out; but for the time being I shall persevere. PS. I rewound and listened to that poem three times.
I love how much Barbra enjoys food and puts it into her book and she’s always eating. I find it hilarious that Chris O’Donnell was hired to play her son in Prince of Tides, and then was payed out to rescind the part so her own son Jason could play her character’s son. I forget who she said urged her to do that, maybe Nick Nolty? Yeah Barbara, that what happened. I wonder if she just budgeted that in the movie ahead of time, or just payed Jason out of pocket? The Yentl parts were the best section.
@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH Yeah, reading the book definitely prompts a Barbra film festival. I really enjoyed watching Hello Dolly again recently, having not seen it since I was a kid and it was on TV for the first time. I do still think she’s to young for the part, wonderful, but to young.
Just finished Huck Finn in anticipation of James but I have a question that's not about everett's book. You once recommended a "best" Middlemarch and you were bang on so can you recommend a Maya Angelou poetry compilation?
Part of the reason "James" is getting critical acclaim stems from the fact that the novel is having a long, overdue critical conversation with Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, a mainstay in the Western Canon, which puts it rather in a reactive discursive mode in responding to something white society has instigated on the basis of its presumptive power.
I got a friend who has recommended me Stephen King a few times already. I feel awkward about discussing books with her now lest she realizes I still have not tried any King 🤭🤭
Recently, I watched one video about the history of censorship, and what I took from it and what I support in my mind - any type of censorship is a way to say to the person that he/she is not capable of critical thinking, or to be blunt, just a way to say the person is too stupid to make own choice. Generally, books censorship is only the way to impose own political or religious views, which I strongly do not support. I somehow naively believe in people 😊
Hi Kim. Could I get The Stand for my daughter? She loves this book. I could not get past the first few chapters. Thanks. I finally picked up James as I found it for a good price. I am glad it continues to be highly regarded. I recommend A Single Swallow by Zhang Ling Shelly Bryant (Translator). A few years back when I belonged to a book club everyone loved this book.
Btw. I would love a video on how one chooses which booktuber's to follow since there are so many good content providers out there. I have narrowed how many I follow down quite a bit as I needed to balance out the time invested in watching video's vs reading, and general life commitments.
I have the audiobook of Absolution. I’ll start after I finish my current audiobook, a cosy mystery with Angela Merkel as the main character solving the mystery 🙂
@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH I just love those cosy mysteries with famous people. So far I have read those with QE II, former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands and now Angela Merkel. Very fun reads.
I’m also not a fan of SK…just not up my alley. I absolutely adored James, but then again I love Percival Everett. I’ve finished All the Colors… I really enjoyed the book, but the two page chapters drove me batty.
@@MIDDLEoftheBookMARCH but 261 chapters… that’s about 2 1/4 pages per chapter… I really enjoyed the poem… Barnes & Noble now has a whole table devoted to banned books.. some that were actually required reading for me in school????
