Kim, I resonate with you on the repurchasing. I unhauled some books before and I regretted it afterwards. I still haven't replenished my shelf of those lost books, haha.
I mostly loved Absolution but I did think it lost a fair amount of steam at the end. I have definitely re-purchased books that I previously unhauled--and for various reasons. I regretted getting rid of my Sue Grafton books almost immediately and started getting them back.
Although I’m not a fan of poetry, I thoroughly enjoyed your readings of the Tony Morrison poems for the month of August. And thanks to those readings, they finally prompted me to pick up my first book by her -Sula. I absolutely loved it. I was hesitant to pick her up, thinking Morrison was difficult to read, would go over my head, be preachy….but I was wrong. I loved every sentence and got emotionally invested right from the beginning. It was easy to read, yet at the same time layered and complex, full of metaphors and symbolism, without being off putting. Can’t wait to read more by her. So thanks for that😊
10:17 My husband and two of my daughters are diagnosed with ASD1, so we know lots of people on the autism spectrum and ADHD. We have noticed that many women get misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and are put on medication that either doesn't help or makes things worse. Many years later, after daily life struggles, they are diagnosed with ASD1. Maybe you should look into it (online tests and YT channels on autism). My eldest daughter was officialy diagnosed a few months ago, after struggling with working life after university. They accused her of being antisocial, lazy, unfriendly. She didn't tell her work that she has autism, but the knowledge that she is 'not the problem' helped her a lot already. I love your way of reading the poems, beautiful!
I volunteered at a library used bookstore. Books were between $0.50-$2.00. All donated. WELL, in this Arizona retirement community, the books were mostly from “my day” when I was a big BOMC member. Replaced sooo many that I had given away. I missed looking at their spines on my shelf😎
I have repurchased books I have lost. For example, I once lost _The Seven Year Itch_ on the subway and had to purchase another used copy. But unhaul? Not me. I still have _Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, Second Edition_ (1969) by Boyce and DiPrima from my college days. I cannot say goodbye. 😊 Of all of Barbra Streisand’s movies, my favorite is _What’s Up, Doc?_ (1972), the last of the great screwball comedies. 😄
Jack just shared the same poem.... love it. Yes, I've repurchased... considering some repurchases actually. Loved The Prince of Tides. I have the Confessions of Frannie Langton waiting on my shelves. I am so excited to get to Familiaris. I'm waiting for the paperback. 😊💙
Great video! I have similar thoughts around Red Clocks. I read it a few years ago and didn’t enjoy my time with it as much as I thought I would. You’re making me want to give it another go especially with everything going on in the states right now.
Hi Kim, I really enjoyed your video. I enjoy when different topics are discussed. I definitely will check out The newcomers to our community. I already know Renee and she’s great! I have bought the same book twice and sometimes three times because of moving or because I wanted a nicer edition of a book I want to keep. I also have limited space and I’m planning to do an un haul later this month. Today is still my birthday for another hour and I had a really wonderful time with my family. Thank you for your thoughtful video. I’m going to check out that mystery on Goodreads. Aloha friend.
Another great video Kim! I got quite a chuckle out of it. We recently sold our home and moved into a 55+ community which necessitated downsizing. Had a dumpster in the driveway for two weeks and “unhauled” 52 years of possessions, including hundreds of books. Now, unbeknownst to my husband I am repurchasing a lot of the books I got rid of. LOL! Let us know how the Confessions of Frankie Langton is as that is one I let go… Have a great week!
Kim, thanks so much for the shout-out! I really appreciate your kind endorsement of my channel! You know, I HAVE re-purchased books I unhauled in the past - but it is generally the far distant past - as in decades. Again, thanks!
Hearing the cat fight, I was wondering whether you have been able to solve the litterbox issue? And yay for Red Clocks-repurchase. I re-read it not long ago... I hope it works better for you this time around!
I didn't think I was a repurchaser of books, but I have gotten 2 or 3 this year so 🤷♀️ It is so enjoyable listening to you read these poems. Have you considered keeping it going past August in some way?
It is too bad that the Divergent Mind was not a more inclusive read. It is such an important topic to deal with. I love the way you elevate your fellow booktubers. I had found Robert G's channel as it came up on my feed. He was very good. I may have to check out Jamie Ford's book I loved Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. And yes Dear Kim! I think most of us can say we have repurchased books we have unhauled at one time or another! I know I have. I sometimes will pick up a book I loved just to have on hand to give to someone I think will like it. I love sharing books and it is an inexpensive way to spread the joy of reading. I love that you have uploaded your video's at this time slot. Despite not having to get up early anymore, I still seem to wake up between 4-5am every day. Nothing better than to have my coffee and spend time with you!
I live on Aruba and books and the climate here don’t go together well, so I had to throw most of my books, books I had owned for over 30 years. That was very sad. So yes, if I had 24/7 climate control and more shelf space I would definitely repurchase books 🙂
The subject matter of Divergent Minds is interesting and important. It's too bad that the book didn't address a wider audience. Yes! I have rehauled. More than once or twice! You already stated the reason - our minds change. 😊
I used to feel it was somehow wrong to repurchase a book I had unhauled until I had a talk with myself. My tastes change. My wants and needs change. My life changes. I've gotten rid of houseplants or home décor and then repurchased same/similar items so why not books? Great poem. Thanks for sharing.
Re-bought/purchased: The HP Lovecraft Ballantine Fantasy paperbacks. The Stand hardcover with the "1st uncut" whatever bonus added content. I have to admit that I shuddered when I saw that the Barbra Streisand memoir was in the running for the BookTube Prize. Fortunately (for me), I wasn't assigned the group it was in and then it didn't move on. Not that I have anything against it, it's just SO LONG when you have to read 5 other books!
I am reading Invisible Women so your review of Divergent minds was crossing over a bit for me. I have always wondered if the stats that more boys are diagnosed with Autism meant they were missing the girls. You raised many points that I also wonder about, what is 'normal' and is It ultimately about accepting ourselves and our place in the world.
Hi Kim, Jack read the same poem. The universe is telling me something. Please let us know if you end up buying your own book back at some point. In my late twenties/early thirties I moved on from relationships and as I call it “lost things in transit” that I later bought again. I am going through an unhaul of books as feeling overwhelmed by things currently. Apparently it’s part of being peri-menopausal. Who knew 🤷🏻♀️ Take care 📚
I thought Absolution was interesting to see that unique perspective from the wives point of view. A small thing bothered me about the story was the names of the children. Rainey and Ransom ? Really? Those are not names people used back in the day, they are more like names from the 2000s or later. It bothered me because it took me out of the time and place of the story. 😆 I rebuy books quite a bit as I get older I want to re read more books and especially if I can get the same cover I had.
