I think in the west people take it for granted that they're so easily accepted into the western culture regardless of colour and ethnicity. When you look at most other countries you're considered an outsider even if you've been born there. To be called a foreigner in your birth country is so strange. In england of you're born in England, you're English AND your parent's or past relatives ethnicity. You're not a foreigner unless you've come over to England as an adult, but you're still going to be accepted.

It's true that writing Chinese characters would feel like drawing, because that's what it is. It's not a phonological language, with letters that equate to sounds. The language is pictures that are either super random or vaguely represent what is being said (the language has evolved over the centuries).
